I like to believe that if Dormamu did not accept the bargain, Strange would have constantly trained from these until he could best him. As we have seen from What If, he’s capable of building up power when he needs it.
Honestly, this has to be the explanation, how he'll get rid of Dormammu in the future, actually being trained through that and all. That is, if Dormammu actually intends to fight Strange again.
@@d4rksonic474 except that if Strange were to fight him again then he'd have to do it without the time stone, granted we know that he's a lot more powerful now than he was back in his 1st movie but even he still struggles when fighting against others with magical abilities and he still can be outplayed/outsmarted like in No Way Home.
@@d4rksonic474 I doubt that's gonna happen, I think the fact that he had his hands up making signs when he posed his demands means he cast a spell of some sort, possibly using the time stone, to make sure he has a fallback measure if dormamu breaks the deal. Of course, writers have retconned shit in the past so who knows, but I don't find it likely.
That was Strange's groundhog day. I wonder how many variations of the Dormammu confrontation he has actually relived before the dark lord has had enough
Strange never planned on beating Dormamu. At this point Strange is a decent sorcerer at best while Dormamu is a literal god. No matter how many time loops he goes through there’s a hard cap on how powerful he can get without more information and training about the intricacies of magic. The reason he’s so confident that Dormamu will concede is that he understands having an ego so big you think you’re a god. Up until the Sorcerer Supreme gave him the “This isn’t about you” speech on her death bed he was as conceited and egotistical as this literal god. So he knows the way to beat Dormamu is the exact same way he was broken: take control away from them. The simple act of telling Dormamu he’s holding them prisoner tells them they lack all control. Dormamu gives up after this because they can’t accept not having control
This is why I love Dr.Strange cause when it comes down to it he’s a hero that saved the day by annoying an otherworldly entity into submission and that gains my respect

Wait, if Dormammu remembers killing Strange, then clearly Strange remembers dying everytime as well. He literally remembers being killed hundreds of time by Dormammu - stabbed, hacked, crushed, burned, atomized. And yet he goes around without being crazy from PTSD? Damn, bro, this guy's got a stronger mind than even Wolverine.
My theory on why this works on Dormammu and wouldn't work on later villains is that because he's on a higher dimension of consciousness he is aware of the time loop, notice how strange never references any previous loop, he is the same every time until Dormammu interrupts him, for strange each loop feels like the first time and he's simply responding to how Dormammu interacts with him. He wins by being a lesser and more limited being than Dormammu, turning his weakness (or lack of higher consciousness) into a strength. (also strange only does the time loop because this realm is timeless to begin with, so he's less likely to break reality)
@@Adaephonable Strange says “beyond time” before flying into his realm, this is why dormammu could perceive the loop while many other lower dimensional villains wouldn’t.
@@JulzGein_ I think thats just him pointing out that no matter how much he is tortured in any loop it won't be enough to get him to stop the loop to escape it, like he doesn't fear anything dormammu can do because "pains an old friend", just my read on it tbh.
If you think about it Dr.Strange was the first MCU character to actually defeat his villain without killing him or making him vanish in some kind of way. This "fight" or ending was trully original and it showed us the power of the time stone.
i find this scene amazing for Strange's character development in this movie. he went from selfish and not wanting to risk anything for reputation, to being narcasistic and self loathing, spending everything he has, just to fix his hands, to selfless and powerful. literally putting his life on the line, for the survival of others.
The writing of his character arc was extremely powerful. Sure, Rachel McAdams was underused, but her character served as the NON-narcissistic counterpoint. It's a bummer how everything turned into a digital circus of childish stupidity after "Endgame". 🙄
I wish this scene illustrated exactly how much time had passed in the time loop, in my mind I see it this way. He really did use the time loop to train and fight but ultimately knew he would lose head to head. So he likely spent eons in Dormamu's realm to the point the dark god was legit starting to go insane hence why he begged to be let free from the loop.
Pretty much agree. He was in the loop so long a god with no concept of time got BORED of killing him. Dr strange died millions of times. Maybe billions.
I think this was left open to interpretation, and doing so improved the storytelling. Underwrites the degree of sacrifice that Strange was willing to go through to defeat Dormammu. Once you start piecing it together, you're like Ohhhh wait.. Strange made a being that was omnipotent in his own realm to admit defeat and ask for terms? It couldn't have been just the few times that we observed.. the filmmakers have implied that Strange suffered death and reset countless times in interviews. This training allowed him to explore and endure the countless future scenarios where he was eventually able to forsee the unique outcome that allowed Thanos to be defeated.
well I mean I don't know about reading to much into it. I think it was just the simple noble act of being in that loop, with it on the table that he'd be there for eternity if he didn't break through to him, was what was really needed to be conveyed here. I think that guy caught on real quick a few times after dr strange told him "ur my prisoner lol" so I mean how futile would that be if he just kept killing him over and over and over again. couldn't have taken long to drive the guy insane
This is pure classic Dr. Strange. Straight out of the comics. Stephen can't overpower Dormammu, but with a little prep time, and some cleverness, he can outwit him. Steve Ditko would be proud of this ending. It's even trippy and psychadelic, just how he liked it.
2:57. This is such a chilling statement. Not because it is threatening, or anything. Just the lack of anger or passion in his voice. He just sounds resigned, like he is expecting to do this forever, and is willing to accept it. Forget Thanos, Dr. Strange was the truly "Inevitable" person.
Yeah lmao, but Dr Strange doesn't have the Time Stone in the Eye of Agamotto, and Dormammu probably has PTSD about it, so Dormammu would probably kill him the first view of a pixel of him
Two years later in another timeline, Strange tries the same method in order to save Christine, but winds up driving himself insane and kickstarting the destruction of his own universe.
He couldn't save Christine without causing a time paradox, her death is what led Strange onto the path of becoming the eventual Sorcerer Supreme. That's why no matter how many times Strange altered the circumstances surrounding her death the universe would find a way to make certain that her death was unavoidable in order to avoid causing a paradox, of course we all know what happens after Strange saves her.
@@Tim7318-3 tbh honest it’s kinda sad that the watcher never really restored his universe even at the end of the show after he practically saved the entire multiverse
@@zantaazapre2659 I don't believe that the watcher has the ability to "restore" a universe, he's mainly there to watch over the multiverse hence the name/title. It's pretty much the main reason why he sends Black Widow to a different universe where her friends are still alive albeit as different universe counterparts since nothing was waiting for her back in her own universe; if it truly was within his power to restore a universe then why would he have sent her to a different universe instead of restoring her own? To quote: Strange - "You're a god, you can undo this!" Watcher - "I'm not a god, and neither are you."
@@zantaazapre2659 It's right there in his title, Watcher... His role is to record how all events play out in all universes. The only reason he intervened in the 'what if' series is because all of existence across all the universes was at risk of being lost forever, along with his life and purpose.
And his learning more about dormamu, if strange came out of that finally understanding all of dormamu's weaknesses, he would be insanely god like powerful
God that is easily one of my favorite Marvel moments ever. It's so cold blooded "You bargain or you remain trapped forever." Or the more famous quote "I'm not stuck in here with you, you're stick in here with me!"
Also just before Dormammu says that the way Dr Strange says I've come to bargain it's like he's already starting to find it funny with and Dormammu being fully aware that this scene is looping.
Fun fact: Benedict Cumberbatch also provided the motion capture and voice for Dormammu (electronically altered, obviously) So in a weird way Dormammu and Doctor Strange are mirror images of each other.
I think he realized no matter what strange would never break the loop, he tried to get him to go insane but that didn’t work either. Strange is arguably the most powerful MCU character for not defeating dormamu but simply bargaining with such a god like creature.
He arguably has the best mental fortitude out of any MCU here. You must have an unbreakable mind to be willing to die countless times for who knows how long.
Honestly this was one of the best scenes in the entire MCU. The main character was faced with a foe who they could literally never win against. He didn't even have a chance. Dormammu was just too powerful, very much a common human versus a literal God. No hope of success through victory because victory was literally impossible. So he had to be clever and use the only thing at his disposal that could achieve success and even then he could only ensure success by letting go of his pride and being willing to lose forever just so the Earth would stay safe...and so he succeeded by failing. All the more powerful when it's shown that be KNOWS going in that he can never be victorious. He was fully prepared to sacrifice himself to an eternity of torture. Which given his completely egocentrentic existence beforehand, is quite a journey. I do kinda wish it went on for another few minutes though and had short clips of him wavering under torture just wanting the pain to end but summoning up his reserves of willpower to force himself to keep going...that way we could have SEEN that he wasn't as fearless as he seemed and he did CARE whether he suffered, but simply cared about the Earth itself more.
This was not the best MCU film, but this is one of my top 10 MCU scenes. It has a "Dr Who" vibe to it. No big smashing battle, but a clever twist of wits.
It's the way it so perfectly drives home the point that Dormammu is stuck against this immovable WALL of a situation. Like no, we are going to BARGAIN muddafucka
I like to imagine another ending where they do it so many times that Dormmamu just starts to open up and in one scene just somehow sits down and talks about his childhood and how his parents didn't give him much attention
I believe this was taken from the comics, but in the comics this is how Strange became so gifted in the Mystic Arts so quickly in earth time. because in the loop he spent like a thousand years, or a long time in the loop fighting the Dark Lord. So like you see Strange die in all those ways. its because he learn to adapt, and Dormamu has to keep changing it up, but in the end just making Strange strong and smarter.
The best ending to an MCU movie since Iron Man. The hero doesn't beat the bad guy through brute force, he beats them by outsmarting them. He knows he can't win physically, but he doesn't have to: he just has to be willing to lose for infinity.

1:13 people underestimate exactly how important this moment is as we don’t know exactly how long this goes on (I’ve guessed months maybe years but we have never got a 100% answer) and with each loop Strange gets stronger and learns a little more this is basically that moment in anime where the hero goes off training (in dragonball z inside of a time chamber very much like this loop).

I loved this movie so much because Dr. Strange isn't a hero who solves every problem with raw firepower. He THINKS. When he faced a foe that was unbeatable in combat he didn't try to beat him in combat. He beat him in patience. In tolerance. In self sacrifice. He knew Dormmamu would NEVER tolerate being caged, especially by a Mortal.
Keep in mind he’s been doing this for a very long time during which he spent mastering his sorcery which explains on how well he was when he fought Thanos
speaking of which this wouldn’t have worked against Thanos because Thanos would’ve never given up for those who can’t put two and two together at least lol
Imagine in the first time doctor strange said I’ve come to bargain and Dormamu was like “ok what you want?” and then doctor strange is like “you were supposed to kill me bro.”
What I love is that Dormammu never asked what Strange wants for who knows how long. He probably killed him millions, maybe even billions of times but never bothered to ask what he wants until the very end
Bro if he comes back make it by sheer accident and ‘oh… oh, I was tricked’ and he just zooms out of there before he’s caught in a loop. Or have him appear on another world where he finds strange and just have someone send a message to him and only talk by that just to avoid a time loop, and help strange get the hell out of there.
this is just gonna lead to more power scaling, since these days the only way to beat someone is by killing them. dormammu was allowed to be a huge threat without there needing to be the brute force to kill him
I mean Clea in his daughter (however that works) and is basically Dr. Strange's "true love interest" and had a cameo after the awful third eye in the second one. So I imagine they are at least going to have a brief encounter. If they'd actually work on that and making a good movie instead of more iron-spider and endless other crap that is 1/2 finished or nobody cares about.
I love how Dormamu starts off thinking that Strange was making a meaningless sacrifice, only to find out that Dormamu was screwed himself. Sure, he could kill Strange forever, but that means he'll never leave the timeloop that he couldn't escape from.(or he would've already, instead of meeting Strange's demands at the end)
I like that Dormamu immediately screamed YOU DARE and crushed him after Dr.Strange explained what he had done. Dormamu knew from that point he was beaten. If The Dark Lord himself has to utter those words you´ve been evil. ultimate checkmate by Dr.Strange.
I remember thinking they'd written themselves into a corner because obviously there had to be a confrontation with Dormamu but they'd pushed so hard the idea that there was no way to actually defeat Dormamu that there was no way for Strange to prevail without a complete ass-pull. And then as i realized what Strange was up to I quickly went from exasperation to 'holy shit they found a way this is excellent'. Stuff like this shows you why the MCU was so beloved in its golden age.
Doctor Strange really did have the advantage here. Because he kept dying, I don't think he actually remembered the previous loops, so he didn't suffer the infinity that he imposed.
1:34 is the best part imho. That tiny bit of harpsichord music as he appears for a third time; it almost feels like a playful taunt as it becomes clear to the audience what Strange is planning to do in this moment.
I wonder how long this went on for…an immortal being has nothing but time, so atleast hundreds of thousands of times before he ever really cared and that even seems low…and Doctor strange remembers each time as well but is unbothered. The mental training and fortitude alone shows how worthy he is of the title Sorcerer Supreme.
This works with Dormammu because he's a being outside of time, his memories don't get wiped out after the resets, he lives through all of them. Doing this against, say, Thanos, would be pointless as he wouldn't remember the loops.
I like to think that Dr. Strange was the first hero in the MCU to drop a save file before entering the final boss fight.

They’re both outside time
Wow! It's amazing how you misunderstood this scene so thoroughly. @JulzGein_
@@Adaephonable
Strange says “beyond time” before flying into his realm, this is why dormammu could perceive the loop while many other lower dimensional villains wouldn’t.
Also why would strange say “pain is an old friend” in reply to dormammu if he couldn’t perceive the loop like dormammu?
@@JulzGein_ I think thats just him pointing out that no matter how much he is tortured in any loop it won't be enough to get him to stop the loop to escape it, like he doesn't fear anything dormammu can do because "pains an old friend", just my read on it tbh.
If you think about it Dr.Strange was the first MCU character to actually defeat his villain without killing him or making him vanish in some kind of way. This "fight" or ending was trully original and it showed us the power of the time stone.
Bcoz he can't even hurt dormammu in first place 😂

@@jamesxiaolong2199 How you seen the second movie? I think the credit scene answers you
It feels like Greek mythology. Where it’s silly but also rlly kinda cool
i find this scene amazing for Strange's character development in this movie. he went from selfish and not wanting to risk anything for reputation, to being narcasistic and self loathing, spending everything he has, just to fix his hands, to selfless and powerful. literally putting his life on the line, for the survival of others.
I’ve always known him as being humble until I seen this movie showing his back story
The writing of his character arc was extremely powerful. Sure, Rachel McAdams was underused, but her character served as the NON-narcissistic counterpoint.
It's a bummer how everything turned into a digital circus of childish stupidity after "Endgame". 🙄
I dont think you know what narcissism is. Narcissists dont do anything for other people, always themselves.
Yeah it would of been interesting if an overlay said death no 1,589,253,525,3452 and then he says make this stop!
well I mean I don't know about reading to much into it.
@@jpal0227 And he didn't go insane?
This is pure classic Dr. Strange. Straight out of the comics. Stephen can't overpower Dormammu, but with a little prep time, and some cleverness, he can outwit him. Steve Ditko would be proud of this ending. It's even trippy and psychadelic, just how he liked it.

He couldn't save Christine without causing a time paradox, her death is what led Strange onto the path of becoming the eventual Sorcerer Supreme.

I believe this was taken from the comics, but in the comics this is how Strange became so gifted in the Mystic Arts so quickly in earth time. because in the loop he spent like a thousand years, or a long time in the loop fighting the Dark Lord.
