      @@chairmanofthebored6860A: They own Lucasfilm.
B: By owning Lucasfilm, Disney by extension owns Star Wars.
C: They've produced all SW content for about 12 years now.
Therefore yes, Disney Star Wars is Star Wars. You don't have to like it if you don't want to, but it is.
Also I find it funny that people complain about the Sequels reusing the Death Star thing when Legends has the Galaxy Gun, Sun Crusher, Eclipse I, Eclipse II, Centerpoint Station, and Turbolaser yields that by all means should be turning planets to dust. Also bringing back Palpatine. Legends did that twice I think.

They also like to act like everything Disney makes is trash when it's just a mix, which is what Star Wars has been ever since they started making media outside the OT films.
Star Wars has always had its good bits and its lame bits, any mature fan has gotten used to ignoring the bits they don't like.

If I had to justify it - it allows an unskilled duellist to reduce a fight into a pure test of evasion for both parties (which is a skillset you already need if you expect to get shot at). You don't need to learn offense, parries, tells, or how to counter any fighting style, just keep that whip moving and keep dodging it. The wielder has an advantage in that they can leverage some control over where the whip goes and they're holding the off switch, meanwhile the opponent has an advantage in that they have a weapon with which to defend themselves. If we assume the wielder can dodge their own attacks indefinitely, their opponent must push through the whip zone to win the fight (or shoot them, the whip seems like it wouldn't be responsive enough to provide sufficient protection against sustained blaster fire).

This is one of the least Jedi weapons to use and makes no sense in context.

Vernestra addresses this issue in the High Republic books.
She got the schematics for her saber from a Force vision. The hilt can project a traditional blade and a light whip. She spends the book worrying about whether the dark side or light side sent her the vision, and whether it was right for a Jedi to use a light whip. It turns out that shortly after building the saber her and some other padawans are stranded on a jungle planet with acid rain and the lightwhip is able to clear the dense jungle foliage faster than a traditional blade which allows her to get the group to shelter from the acid faster. Them surviving also ruins some nihil plans. The Force gave her the vision so she would be equipped to save the padawans and foil the nihil.
I recall her also pointing out that Sith didn't invent the lightwhip.
And Vernestra addresses the increased danger of using a lightwhip. The concentration and control required to wield it responsibly is high. The user has to be aware of precisely where the entire whip is, where it's going, and where any bystanders are within its range at all times. With skill and the Force a lightwhip can be as presice as any whip. They can be used for defense and offense.

    • @anthony7697
      @anthony7697 15 днів тому +8

Actually - it does make sense if you really think about it. Let's be real for a second - from the first movie (episode 4), we see Jedi having no qualms with confusing and deceiving anyone, three words: Jedi Mind Trick. Even in Episode 1 with Qui-Gon rigging the dice to land on blue for Anakin. You can try and justify all the things that can be gone over cause it's a way longer list than that - but they still confused and deceived people, let alone opponents. In terms of defence - lightsabers as is have a relatively small area with which to block a blaster, you could, in theory at least, rotate the whip around to in essence create a larger area like a shield even if you still have to move to block same as any other Jedi. If the force is being used in conjunction to control it (as mentioned in the video) then it is significantly less likely as is to hit unintended targets - to say nothing of someone that has mastered it's use likely already has enough control and precision to not do that anyway - such as in the real world where some skilled enough with a whip can knock a cigarette out of someone's mouth without hitting them. Lastly - there is the question if it is normally able to 'cut' the same way as a regular lightsaber, or is it at a setting in which it can make contact but not cut through an opponent - which would mean it could instead be used to restrain an opponent rather than killing them, which at last check, would be a way more Jedi thing to do to restrain rather than cut down.
But then again - as Obi-Wan would say, that's 'from a certain point of view'.

It's okay to say that the jedi adapted it from the sith to use the lightwhip to gain an advantage, as the sith created many weapons the jedi adopted like the early physical force blades made with force (sith) alchemy.

For instance, Lightsaber Sais, featuring angled crossguards to direct the opponent's blade. Lightsaber Scythe, like a saberstaff, but the emitter at the very end is on a hinge so it can rotate inwards and be parallel with the staff. Lightsaber Bayonet, a normal blaster rifle, with a lightsaber emitter under the barrel. These exercises are cool because I think the only thing sillier than the alternative lightsabers is the idea that lightsabers can only look one way.

If the Acolyte can pull it off right or not is another matter, but for people to go into such a rage about this weapon type online is very immature really. It shows a lot have forgotten a lot of the unique, exotic, strange and stupid things the old EU/Legends has. The current content of Star Wars is varied, having a lot of highs and lows, just as it was in the past.

#AskEck I think Lucasfilm should pursue adapting George Lucas's sequel treatments in comic form and getting Lucas himself to consult on it. This may sound like an out-there idea but Lucas was clearly unhappy that the story of his sequels was never told, he's had a life long love of comic books as a medium and even though he's retired, he's always been happy to consult on projects whenever Lucasfilm have asked him to (Solo, The Mandalorian, Dial of Destiny, etc). For Lucasfilm's part, they're fine with producing non canonical content like Visions and the rumored 'What if?' series. Marvel Comics are also currently publishing 'What if?' Alien comics and Dark Horse recently published a comic adaption of one of James Cameron's old drafts for an Avatar sequel, so I don't see why Lucasfilm can't get either company to give Star Wars the same treatment. It could even be nice way to celebrate the upcoming 10 year anniversary of the beginning of the sequel trilogy, taking a look at what it could have been. So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's an idea Lucasfilm should pursue?

The dual phase lightsaber always captured my imagination because I imagined the frantic change of pace in a dual when an opponent suddenly had a claymore length lightsaber.
But I also never found it present or mentioned in any games or content.

Shira Elan Colla Brie first appears in the original Marvel Star Wars run in issue 56 (this was November 1981 w/ cover date Feb 1982) or post Empire. She is a double agent for the Empire. And "dies" in issue 62. The first appearance of Lumiya was not until Issue 88. The first time we see the lightwhip is issue 95. The famous cover with Lumiya fighting Luke is issue 96. 95 and 96 are both 1985 or post Jedi.

by far the most brutal whip saber is Darth Lumiya's, the decription alone is literally a flogging whip, the energy aspect of it is just an intimidation factor. That's what makes her even terrifying to go against.
The rest of just...meh. They just took the regular whip and slap some lightsaber effects

I would really like to know how a short lightsaber would help defend against a whip?
Like, wouldn't you want something more like a long pole to catch the very whips and hope it wraps around?
Or maybe some kind of sword catcher or even a claw?
With a short lightsaber, wouldn't that just give you less length and area to potentially static block?

    • @ExileTwilight
      @ExileTwilight 15 днів тому +2

In context of the story I believe he used the 'tanto' specifically to catch the whip and keep his other hand free to attack with. Were there better options? Probably. But in the context of the story Luke was already well-versed in using a traditional lightsaber, learning an entire new weapon for one opponent seems a bit much.

'catch the whip', I guess I just don't get it. Maybe I need to read the story.
Is it like easier because he has all of the whip parts on a shorter weapon ?
And a shorter weapon is just more manageable?
      -Lighter,
      -less likely to cut yourself
      - better leverage on the 'strong' of the blade
      -ect
      That kind of stuff?

Best way to make a light whip for dualing purposes similar to the rgb lighsaber you can buy online.
multiple 4 inch polycarbonate tubes chained together and each one has bluetooth sensors that go back into the hilt. So you press the button and they all turn on.

The Ferengi in TNG had a variant as well.. Energy whips used in the 22nd century had a yellow energy pulse while 24th century versions were blue. (ENT: "Acquisition"; TNG: "The Last Outpost"; LD: "Mugato, Gumato")
I know the ST and SW aren’t the same exactly, but the idea of an energy whip isn’t new to sci-fi.

Electrowhips aren't new to Star Wars. However an actual lightsaber whip that emits the same plasma energy as a lightsaber would be much harder to use as an effective weapon.
Electrowhips are generally used against unarmed targets, to torture slaves or prisoners, and maybe, if you're really desperate, to disarm an opponent. But they have multiple drawbacks. For one, they're only useful within a very specific range. Any further and the whip won't reach, and any closer you risk being struck, either by a fist or a lightsaber, or disarmed. And due to the nature of the whip and the arm movement needed to use it, it's unusable in close quarters environments. Whether it's on board a ship or in a dense forest you can't use it without it getting caught on things.
With a lightsaber whip you have all of the above problems plus the added risk of having long coils of burning plasma whirling around, causing extreme peril to you, your environment, and any allies that might be standing near you. On top of that there's no telling how effective a lightsaber whip would be at deflecting blaster bolts. Due to the extra time to move it in front of you compared to a lightsaber I don't think it would be a very effective defensive weapon. With its confusing and destructive nature I really just can't see this as any kind of weapon a Jedi would use.
And for some reason electrowhips get called lightwhips sometimes despite being much closer in relation to an electrostaff.

Lumiya and her light-whip were technically s-material until the EU authors adapted them into their continuity as the EU didn’t officially start until 1994, with the exception of the Thrawn trilogy and the Dark Horse comics.
My question is, now that Marvel comics are officially canon, does that mean that their old Star Wars comics are part of the new canon continuity or just part of Legends?

Marvel Comics (like DC) publishes titles in Volumes. This was the basic differential before timelines and multiverses became popular.
So, no. The pre-Disney Marvel Star Wars comics are not retroactively canonized. They were a different volume, different timeline, different galaxy.

I’m reminded of some books by Larry Niven, specifically his Ringworld novels. Since it’s a giant ring surrounding a star (like the Halo games, but much bigger) all of the land is always pointed towards the star. To create a useful day-night cycle, they have a bunch of solid metal plates closer to the sun, spinning at a different rate, and with gaps between them. So every 24hrs, a new plate will block the star and then stop blocking the star. And the plates were attached to each other by mono-filament strings. Exactly one molecule across (probably carbon nano-tube?),so just the weight of such a strong was enough to cut basically anything. The protagonist’s ship ends up running into one such string. Spaceship emergency redundancy will automatically generate a bubble of temporal stasis field, which is enough to stop the string from carving the ship in half. Later on in one of the novels, while on the good guys stumbles across where this string has fallen to ground. Try to pick it up with your hand, you’ll cut your fingers off.
    This feels like that.

I've been hoping to see a light whip. I'd also like to see a light foil one of these days. If for no better reason then to get them to make a model so I can get a saber that's not just another tube with some bells and whistles. Sadly, so many light saber designs just don't really stand out from one another! I'm familiar with the light whip from Lumiya using one, and think it's an excellent addition to the larger body of known works.

I remember that comic! Oh man I had completely forgotten that until I watched this video. But I do remember the lightwhips in the 2nd Edition RPG... I forgot the name but they were in there.
I figure a light-whip could act something like a real world Urumi, the flexible sword-whip from India. Those things are awesome to watch but they're dangerous to an unskilled user, just like a lightsaber.
