Communism‘s deterioration picked up pace when the port workers at Lenin Shipyard went on strike in 1980 and the independent union Solidarity was founded. Join Lukas on his journey through Europe’s recent history, which was heavily influenced by these events in Gdańsk. And he also brings us to a very special lost place in this port city!

The most beautiful city in Europe, Gdansk, has everything. Magnificent, beautiful and rich architecture. Ancient precious monuments. Romantic streets. Charming cafes, cozy restaurants. True Polish patriots living there. The tough people of the sea who live there. The wind from the sea as well as the beautiful Tri-City with the city of Sopot at the forefront and modern Gdynia. Orlowo is also cozy. Mount Pacholek in Gd-Oliwa with an interesting view and unusual organs in the Archcathedral and a beautiful park. Beautiful beaches all around. Fresh fried fish with chips. What more is needed for happiness, which I, in the New Year from across the Ocean, as an old Gdańsk (Gdanszczanin) citizen, wish to all.

One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, D@nzig was stolen from Germ@ny; along with Z0pp0t, Bresl@u, Stettin, Th0rn, M@rienburg, P0sen, etc. Not only that; most of their Germ@n inhabitants were kicked out were forced to evacuate, most of whom didn't have anything to do with W0rld W@r 2 or Gen0cide and even those who even actively opposed such things. So we demand them back. We are not even trying to take anything away from P0land. We are just demanding them back. Give back our cities or we know how to take them back.

@@sharjiljafric-3184 "During Wrocław's early history, control over it changed hands between the Duchy of Bohemia (1038-1054), the Duchy of Poland and the Kingdom of Poland (985-1038 and 1054-1320). Following the fragmentation of the Kingdom of Poland, the Piast dynasty ruled the Duchy of Silesia. One of the most important events during this period was the foundation of the Diocese of Wrocław by the Polish Duke and from 1025, King Bolesław the Brave in 1000. Along with the Bishoprics of Kraków and Kołobrzeg, Wrocław was placed under the Archbishopric of Gniezno in Greater Poland, founded by Pope Sylvester II through the intercession of Polish Duke Bolesław I the Brave and Emperor Otto III in 1000, during the Gniezno Congress.[26] In the years 1034-1038 the city was affected by the pagan reaction in Poland.[27]
The city became a commercial centre and expanded to Wyspa Piasek (Sand Island), and then onto the left bank of the River Oder. Around 1000, the town had about 1,000 inhabitants.[28] In 1109 during the Polish-German war, Prince Bolesław III Wrymouth defeated the King of Germany Henry V at the Battle of Hundsfeld, stopping the German advance into Poland. The medieval chronicle, Gesta principum Polonorum (1112-1116) by Gallus Anonymus, named Wrocław, along with Kraków and Sandomierz, as one of three capitals of the Polish Kingdom. Also, the Tabula Rogeriana, a book written by the Arab geographer Muhammad al-Idrisi in 1154, describes Wrocław as one of the Polish cities, alongside Kraków, Gniezno, Sieradz, Łęczyca and Santok.[29]

      @@sharjiljafric-3184 "Origin
      A manuscript fragment featuring gyddanyzc
The name of the city was most likely derived from Gdania, a river presently known as Motława on which the city is situated.[14] Linguists argue that the name stems from the Proto-Slavic adjective/prefix gъd-, which meant wet or moist with the addition of the morpheme ń/ni and the suffix -sk.[15]
      History
The name of the settlement was recorded after St. Adalbert's death in 997 CE as urbs Gyddanyzc and it was later written as Kdanzk in 1148, Gdanzc in 1188, Danceke[16] in 1228, Gdańsk in 1236,[a] Danzc in 1263, Danczk in 1311,[b] Danczik in 1399,[c] Danczig in 1414 and Gdąnsk in 1656.[17]
In Polish documents the form Gdańsk was always used. The German form Danzig developed later, simplifying the consonant clusters to something easier for German speakers to pronounce.[18] The cluster "gd" became "d" (Danzc from 1263),[19] the combination "ns" became "nts" (Danczk from 1311).,[19] and finally an epenthetical "i" broke up the final cluster (Danczik from 1399).[19]
In Polish the modern name of the city is pronounced [ɡdaj̃sk] (listen). In English (where the diacritic over the "n" is frequently omitted) the usual pronunciation is /ɡəˈdænsk/ or /ɡəˈdɑːnsk/. The German name, Danzig, is pronounced [ˈdantsɪç] (listen). The city's Latin name may be given as either Gedania, Gedanum, or Dantiscum; the variety of Latin names reflects the mixed influence of the city's Polish, German and Kashubian heritage. Other former spellings of the name include Dantzig, Dantsic, and Dantzic." WIKIPEDIA

The localisacion of the old Stocznia Gdanska isn't the best for the new methods of ship production. As ports the shipbuilding industry is moving from inland harbours into the sea and it's the case around the world.
