- Tourist numbers in Poland have been falling since the beginning of the Russian war against Ukraine. No wonder, since Ukraine is right next door. What does it feel like to go on vacation in Poland despite the times we live in?
DW’s Lukas Stege takes a look around Gdańsk and then moves on to the Westerplatte peninsula close by, where the Second World War began on September 1st, 1939. Watch Lukas on his trip to Poland in May 2022.

Dear users, as some of you have already noticed, an error found its way into the video at 2:45. It read: "The historic center was destroyed by the Germans during the Second World War." That is of course incorrect, Gdańsk wasn't destroyed by the Germans, but by Allied forces. We've amended the sentence and offer our sincere apologies!

Next error is about first shoots of WW2. The attack on Wieluń was symbolic for the beginning of World War II. The Germans, without declaring hostilities, bombed the defenseless city by surprise. The raid took place on September 1, 1939 in the morning, according to many historians, 5 minutes before the attack on Westerplatte.

Now, it is actually time to visit Poland because the exchange rate for Euro and USD is so favorable - you get an automatic discount on luxury hotels, spas, excellent food and services. I have read somewhere that some Germans even buy golden bars in Poland since they are cheaper there than in Germany🙂 The last thing to mention is that by visiting Poland you help Poles who have been also helping millions of Ukrainians living in Poland .

Exactly !!! My entire family is going on vacation to Poland from the USA next week. They are even going to the Suwalki Gap. Putin has his hands way too full with Ukraine to try anything in Poland 😂. The exchange rate is absolutely amazing for someone bringing US dollars to Poland.

@@user-iw3uf4nf4p Poland uses the Polish Złoty which is at an all time low against the US dollar and the Euro. Meaning you can buy more stuff when you convert your US dollars or Euros to Polish Złoty because you will be getting a lot more Złoty than say a few years ago. Does that help you understand what’s going on ?
Germans did destroy mamy cities in Poland, but this one was actually destroyed during siege of Danzig in 1945 by the Red Army.
It was not a german city before the war. ..and germans are guilty of destructions in Poland. Property robbed and destroyed by germans in poland is 900 bilion $ and killing 6 milions of Polish citizens. Still germans had not pay war reperations.

I'm Polish and yes German did Destroy A lot of Cities and have Stolen a lot of art treasures from Poland, but Gdansk - Danzig was actually destroyed during fighting and later-on Russians burnt and destroyed mainly the old town because of their hatred. So, they did exactly the same as they're doing it now in Ukraine. You can't blame everything on Germans, we have to be FAIR.
Look at trees . It was filmed on early spring and they are asking why it is so empty? Maybe you should film these places on high season.

Tourism falling in Poland because of the war in Ukraine is absolutely absurd. Poland is far away from Russia, from the war, and is a NATO member. Even western Ukraine is completely untarnished by war, and safe, let alone Poland.

I live in Kraków and I see a lot of tourists from abroad. After all we all live close to the war and we are part of it - be it Sweds, Germans, Fins, Czechs, Slovaks etc. Maybe it looks more scary to the people of the USA, but for Europeans? I don't think so.
As a person living in Gdańsk. This year I have not noticed any significant drop in tourism in our city, but it might just be me

I mean, as a citizen of Gdańsk, I am not seeing this dramatical change in number of tourists, plus based on the outfits, this video was shooted before summer, so yeah, coastal city indeen could have been emptier than in july or august...
To those who want to talk their way out of war like some in this video. I recall a quote from the father of modern Poland, Józef Piłsudski. In 1919 he said "We cannot believe anything Russia promises. For Russia promises when it is forced to do so and then goes back on its word from the moment its strength is renewed.”
The only response is to arm Ukraine and pursue the policy of Poland, the UK and others. If we don't fight back now the problem will be worse later. Germany of all people will suffer hard unless the tide of aggression is halted once and for all.
I don't like generalizing of entire countries with hundred million in inhabitans. I also doubt, that Mr. Pilsudski could forsee the future in 100 years.
Very, very true words. It does not matter with which Russia we are dealing with: tsarist, Soviet or Putin. Russia is the successor to the Golden Horde - wild, unpredictable, bandit.

There is always the cult of the individual and the violation of human rights, breaking the rules, contracts and peace agreements. It has been a bandit country since the times of Ivan the Terrible, successor to the wild Golden Horde. Pilsudski said what Central Europe has known for 300 years.

1:10 he's wrong, the war is not next to our borders, the war is more than 600 kilometers away from our borders in Eastern Ukraine. Poland is in central Europe right next to Berlin, it's not connected to what happens in eastern europe. Such stereotypes are extremally misleading.
@MS3300 The entire Ukraine is affected by the war, even if the front is in the east. You will not deny that there were already shellings not far from the Polish border near Lviv.

ohh Gdańsk is incredibly beautiful and this cruise with that lets say shp is so much fun but the only aspect i hate about Gdańsk is its far from my City cuz i live in Southern Poland in silesia so its up to 9/10 h with car or train but expirience in the city is awesome

great coverage of the ground reality
We invited few dozens of Irish people to Gdańsk, to a weddings we organised there last summer, it was already during the Ukrainian-Russian war.
Everybody was safe there, loved it and enjoyed the beautiful city.
Gdańsk and the Tricity have a lot to offer - the Old Town, the long, beautiful sandy beaches.
Gdańsk is one of my favourite places on Earth - and I travel quite a lot.
It’s aaabsolutely worth visiting for few days. I just wouldn’t book it for the periods of the Opener Festival or St Dominik’s annual market - accommodation prices really go up. ;)
Though I like the annual market and some hidden gems from Polish companies you can get there, more on the side streets of it. ;)
I visit Gdańsk few times per year, different seasons and fall in love with it over and over again. :)

I think you need to distinguish between overseas tourists and domestic tourists. Gdańsk and the Baltic coast is dependant on domestic tourists not overseas ones. Poland only has a bit of the sea and that’s where people in Poland go in the summer, to the coast. Like most of Poland. Most overseas tourists come from Germany and Scandinavia but in total they probably account for less then 20% of the overall tourist numbers with people from further afield accounting for less then 1%. Another example Zakopane in the mountains gets about 5 million tourists a year but 99% are domestic. Same thing happens in countries like the USA and china where people go on holiday to different places but in the same country.

@@DWTravel Last Time, more people from Ukraine is focused on traveling across Europe, mostly for finding a new place to live in it, and they're some sort of tourist in Poland. Of course if plenty of Wyman from Ukraine traveling across Poland, from one place to another, the main reason for it is to find better job, or better school for their children, or just better place to live. But even if they think, that it's temporary, they have here in Poland several Banks, with phone hot lines in call center in Polish or Ukrainian language, with smartphone Apps in several languages to choose (Polish, English, Russian and Ukrainian), and probably they will stay here forever.
Many years ago, I was talking with one Polish man in Berlin, which said me, that he come back to Poland, when he will be (German word: "Rentner").
Next time, when I met him in Berlin, he said me, he was in Poland in Urlaub... Und hast mir gesagt, dass er hat in Restaurant Cafe bestellen. Dann er war ganz böse, ob Cafe was nicht diese Sort, und er probably never comes back to Poland.
The same will be in more than 50% of this millions of people from Ukraine.
When I was living in Österreich, I've made account in local Bank. There was only one language in this bank.
When I was living in Germany, there was some writings in shops in Polish language. Zum Beispiel "jede Diebstahl wird gestrafft".

In dieser Zeit Poland war noch nicht in Europäischen Union, und wir waren alle Schwarzarbeiter in Deutschland. Letztes Mal ich war in Deutschland nur einkaufen, wenn hab ich in Österreich arbeitet. Und hab ich nicht mehr diese Schriften gesehen worden. Polnisch und Deutsch sind schwere Sprachen zu lernen miteinander. Ich wünsche Sie einen schönen Tag

7:28 looks kinda unfortunate. Sentence behind you is "nigdy więcej wojny" which translates to "no more war" or sth similar. But youve only shown words "więcej wojny" and this translates to "more war" - or sth similar.

@@jankowalski6338 They're trained to operate them. There is no problem, because Poland and Germany are both in NATO; NATO is full of troops from other countries deployed in countries that aren't their own. Kind of the whole point of NATO is cooperation.
As many people pointed out in the comments, now it's actually a good time to visit Poland. Even cheaper for Western tourists and not overcrowded with tourist groups as usual.
For example the Auschwitz camp museum was visited by 80% fewer foreign tourists than before. Now it's a unique opportunity to have a solemn visit there without Asian selfie-taking tourists in flip-flops or groups of Italians talking constantly about food even at Birkenau.

The hisoric center of Gdansk was not destroyed by the Germans primarily. The destruction might be a result of the war which was caused by Germany, but Danzig's old town quarters were bombed by heavy Allied and Soviet air raids.

@Al An At this time Danzig was a city within Germany and the Allied bombarded it for the same reason they did in Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin or Dresden. What the strategic purpose of this bombardments was is a seperate issue.

Russians haven't strategic bombers fleet.
They have only tactical air force.
Buildings were not restored to the original look, but to look of the era of the older architectural elements found in the ruins of the building. Buildings are shorter, with gardens in the back that were absent before.

There are much more green courtyards today than in the historic old quarters. Flats could strech over to narrow facades. Restoring older architectural elements also had a political dimension because it takes reference to a time when the ties of the city to Poland were closer. This types of selective reconstruction are typical in Poland after the the devastations of the war. E.g. the castle in Sczecin was not reconstructed to the state when it serve as residence of the Prussian rulers but rather to the state when Slavic rulers lived there.

Wieluń was just a little town where the first air bombardment of WW II happened and nobody really cares about it. The first combat engagement of WW II between Polish Army and overwhelming number of Germans supported by artillery, cruiser Schleswig-Holstein, and Ju-87 Stuka planes happened at Westerplatte. These are facts, not a myth.

There are two so-called pirate ships (Galeon Lew and Czarna Perła) sailing to Westerplatte. They
are replicas of galleons that were mostly used as warships.
DW don't you want to correct your mistake? The city wasn't destroyed by the Germans as the majority of the city was German speaking. Just say 'was destroyed during the war' if you want to avoid the topic. A publicly funded broadcaster should do better research.

Have you found the strength to learn from the past?
If all these houses are "recontructed down to the last detail" would be a cause for further debate. The result is very impressive , but what you see there now is not the reconstructed state of the city prior to the war. For a few buildings it is the case - for many rows of houses it more how the city were supposed to look centuries ago. Plus often the layout of the apartments don't match up with the fassades. Some may argue the 16th / 17th century style houses looked the prettiest - but other see as an obvious attempt to rebuild a cityscape prior to Prussian or German times, when the city was more connected to Poland. This type of selected reconstruction in favor of monuments connected to Polish history and Pre-Prussian/ German times can be seen often in Poland in the 1950 / 1960's, e.g. in Wroclaw. Clearly the results are often impressive, but you have to take it which a pinch of salt that idological ideas were also involved and not consider it as "recontructed down to the last detail" .
After the war, for the Poles displaced by force from the territories annexed by the USSR to cities such as Gdańsk or Wrocław, those cities were too German. This Germanness was connected with the nightmares of the war. This is one of the reasons why the cities were "polonized" during the reconstruction.
@@marcinlip An interesting example is the rebuilding of the Market square in Rabitor, Silesia. There fassades in the style of East Polish Renaissance were contructed, which clearly reminded the new inhabitants of their original towns in the East, but had little in common with the "German" fassades which stood in this lace before the war.

The Polish cultural historian Konstanty Kalinowski once called the old town of Gdansk "politically correct and so beautiful Danzig has never been". You need to be clear that it is not truely historical, which surely has advantages for the people living there today: they have larger flats and more open and greener courtyards, where prior to the war most likely outbuildings and small business were.

Poland West region and Gdańsk was always Slavic since over thousand Years. For few hundreds Years under German ocupation. Those regions come legally back after WWII.
Look at a map. Poland held these territories from 10-13 century, before and after that (since 1945) it belonged to germans.
It was even part of the hanseatic league.
Those lands are German native lands, had been so long before the Roman Empire. The Poles resided much further east in lands that belong to Ukraine today.

I love how Germans interviewed say that diplomatic/talking solution is only option. Sorry this didn't worked back in 1938-39 and it doesn't work now. For talking both sides must want to talk. Putin want's to ressurect imperial Russia he isn't interested in peace untill he has majority of Ukraine in his palm. Ukrainians want freedom and want to be part of western democratic world. What would be compromise? Ukraine giving up? Leaving its countrymen to be sloughtered in Kherson, Donbas and Luhansk regions? Would you give up Sachsen and Brandenburg knowing that Germans living there would be enslaved, women and girls raped, those resisting killed and others scattered around Russian Siberia? Children living in orphanage learning to be "good" Russians? If we do Munich 2.0 with Putin it will end up with world war 3.

While the video shows nice parts of Gdańsk I think it is absolutely unnecessary to ask German tourists what is to be done to keep the peace in Europe! Talking Talking Talking...with who?! Great date and time for an documentary about Poland, Poland still what's to deal with the past and Germans in case of reparations and stolen property still hanging in many German museums, on the other hand Poland is managing war in the east doing teen times fold as much to help Ukraine as western european countries and is only second to USA in case of military aid.
As usual none of that is in the western msm and Poland itself is barely mentioned since neglecting Poland is a standard unless its slanderous material.
70% of Poles were personaly involved in helping Ukrainians both with their time and money but also homes, nothing like that happend in europe, this would be a great material for a documentary but ofcourse i did not expect anything more than few minutes mention in the msm in case both of ww2 and current situation. @@vloplob We don't own any German land. Ducal Prussia is a remnant of the order that illegally occupied this area. Formally, these are the lands of the Baltic states. If you were learning history, you would know that Royal Prussia was Polish. They were looted during the partitions by Prussia. Gdańsk was not German - it was the free city of Gdańsk. Even Wrocław belonged to Germany for the shortest time. The borders of our countries have changed constantly. Today, when we look at the map, we see where Germany is and where is Poland. Germany has their land and Poles have theirs. We don't own any German land. I know what the map of Poland looks like, I know where my country is. When it comes to money, most Poles believe that the war ended a long time ago. The financial claims in this context seem ridiculous. Everything on this topic was settled long ago. War losses when it comes to looted property - this is regulated by international law, I hope it is respected by Germany and Poland.

Saying that the Germans destroyed the city during WW2 really shows that the reporter has absolutely no knowledge of history at all. Danzig had been a German city for centuries and under international control after WW1. The destruction is a result of the war, I.e. Soviet, American and British bombing, and as a result of ground battles between the Polish, Soviet and German troops by the end of the war.

The destruction is mainly caused by the Red Army - they wanted to destroy the city on purpose. The other facts that you forgot to mention that this is not German for centuries - this has been a city that was also Polish for centuries. It got heavily germanized - with Polish population expelled in 18th and 19th centuries. Also it has been rebuild only by poland without any german help.

There has been war in Europe in Ukraine for 8 years the Russo-Ukraine war 2014-present. Which was started when the US overthrew Ukraine's president in a coup that started the fighting inside Ukraine, 14,000 people had died before Russia intervened in Feb. to end the war. The massive amounts of weapons the US and Europe are sending into Ukraine are extending the war and making it bigger. There is a point where the sides will be so invested it will be impossible to back down, it may have been passed already, so then this becomes a World War and likely a nuclear war. Small wars becoming big wars it's happened thousands of times in history that's why the higher caliber leaders we had in past decades on all sides would not have let this happen or shut it down quickly and negotiated. The risks of unintended consequences in the nuclear age can not be overstated.
Could you please provide the number how many of these 14,000 were Russian soldiers on Ukrainian territory, how many were Russian financed mercenary and how many were really Ukrainian civilians?

I think the drop in tourists visiting Poland might also have to do with recent political developments in Poland. E.g. LHGBTI free zones in certain conservative areas and Poland's unwillingness to plan along according to EU rules and regulations. Poland is creating an image problem for themselves that hurting them and that is sad to see. 😔
