Just watched this for my '01 330ci. My door jam is slightly different but I think yours is a sedan. Lock assembly was identical. I will say two things about this repair.
    1) This man is VERY INFORMATIVE. I have watched several of his videos on the upkeep on my 330.
    2) That spring inside the lock cylinder, is the spawn of satan. No seriously. Try not to get mad during this repair. Took me 3 IPAs and a lot of patience and cussing up a storm. He makes the spring part look easy. IT'S NOT. PERIOD.

You should mention that a broken tumbler can lead to the micro switch being out of sorts and tripping up the EWS, leading to intermittent no crank. I believe it's called a "double lock" fault.

Instead of a biro to stretch the spring over the post, which shattered when I tried, I found a small tamperproof Torx screwdriver (the hollow sort) worked a treat.

Let me tell you my story surrounding this fix. I have done it twice now. When I bought my car in January 2019, this fix needed to be done. My key was dead and did not work even with a new battery so I was limited to manually locking and unlocking it. I did it but could not get the spring all the way to the correct position. This will make you so extremely angry. It seems so simple but it is HARD. Now two days ago (November 2019), I locked my car and when I went to unlock it, the cylinder spun freely without any reaction. I called AAA and they got me in. I ordered the part as I assumed this was the issue but it was going to take two days to come. The next day, I was just planning on leaving my car unlocked and I did that but when I shut my back door, all my doors locked. So I had to call AAA AGAIN. The tow truck drivers greet me by name at this point. At this point, I just leave the window open enough so I can stick my hand in and unlock it just in case (even though it's below 0 here in Minnesota). I finally got the part today and got to putting back the dreaded spring. After 20 minutes of trying, I GOT IT. This was one of the happiest moments of my life. Great video as always. I am shelling out the $300 for a new electronic key so I don't have to deal with this every couple months.

UGH lol such a helpful video. I thought I had fixed it then I tried it out in the CSR door and i broke the piece that breaks in the lock lol oh well. I took apart the working lock in my E46 part car and took apart the lock in my actual daily driven e46 that was broken and put it together and it worked until I put it in the door and that dang piece snapped lol. It was weird I had a few problems. Where the key sits in kept sliding out, and the part where one side of the LHD/RHD piece is bigger/taller than the other, mine were the same size lmao. I just put the side you were talking about where you said too but they were the same size. Oh well. I'm going to buy the parts kit and try it again I just wanted to try to save some money lol! Thanks 50s kid!!!!!!!

Do not believe this man. Taking out the cylinder is extremely easy. But replacing The Spring to the cylinder is extremely hard. Comparing the task of replacing the Spring Of the cylinder,...
I would compare it. to a man giving childbirth. The frustration you Will experience it's extremely aggravating.
These guys on UA-cam make everything appear to be easy..
But when you try , 2 do the same thing on your car you find . That is ,not as easy as it appear to be. Continue, watch the video and you' Will see , That he gives up .l on trying to replace The Spring. Save yourself the trouble and remove the cylinder from the car and take it to a locksmith and let him do it. You will save yourself a Large amount of frustration.

Got the spring done in 2 minutes. Handy if you have two people. After the spring is compressed (used ballpoint pen), and you have the keyway shaft held in against the compressed spring, if you can get a friend to hold that assembly down , its much easier for you to turn the keyway shaft and get the keyway holder in.

Great detailed explanation. Am sure I got one of the many different things (key barrel, 3 rings, last of which is different for L/R-hand drive, stem) that needs to be the right way round wrong and managed to rotate the key to a position where I couldn't rotate it back to the original position to be able to extract it.
Nightmare scenario with key and lock barrel permanently united and neither useable but happily managed to extract the key from the barrel by part-sawing through the U clip with a hacksaw from above and then breaking it off with pliers (the U horseshoe clip had rotated so the closed end was blocked from being pulled off the final stem by the main lock body). Lucky the repair kits (including horseshoe clip) are so cheap, around £3! :-)
Btw did anyone have issues with their convertible soft top retracting and windows coming down randomly when turning the key in the broken barrel? That was my original nightmare with the car fully open to the elements and public, no easy way to close the top (roof close button flashing red) and rain on the way! Actually, thinking about it been a nice car to drive in the Summer but no end of dramas too :-D

The spring is the only annoying part. I picked up a 2001 320i in September and the lock was 'broken'. By broken, I mean that someone had literally removed the little parts that come in the kit. Kit from Amazon for 12$ including the roll pin. Freaking mechanic wanted to change the entire door handle and locking mechanism instead, for $800. Never going to trust that shop again.

First off, your videos have saved me so much money and I don’t even know where to begin to thank you.
Would a broken lock mechanism affect the window operation? I rolled my window up (330i) from the outside using the key, the lock broke and now my window is stuck even with the electric controls on the inside of the vehicle. I bought a new window regulator and I’m prepared to replace that if this lock fix doesn’t solve the problem. Has anyone else had this problem? Cheers.

Just wanted to say thank you for this in depth video. This is the best key lock repair video with the best video/audio quality and camera work. I hate it when people cut away to do steps off camera and resume. I have a 2001 X5 so it's not exactly the same but good enough. This no doubt saved me a chunk of money. Cost about $10 to fix this. And another $15 to replace a dead VL2020 key fob battery from other videos on YT too. FWIW, I used J-B Weld cold steel epoxy and that did the trick perfectly. I put in the time to cut the weld points on the battery with an x-acto to be on the safe side. Thanks again!

This was an easy fix. The center hole in the replacement parts from amazon was a little too small and it had some ruff edges but in used a small file to enlarge the hole.

Sounds like something is screwed up inside the general module 5. It is located behind the glove box (you have to remove it)

Easy way to tell that piece which one you need just see what side your driver wheel at left side that mean your US driver so you need left piece that indicate cut to left angle and if your right side driver that mean UE n abroad that mean obviously right piece cut indicates right angle …. There hopes that makes better sense why those are there and your missing your spring i didn’t watch pass one minutes yet lol will see 👍🏽

Great video. You must be careful not to remove the lock cylinder. This happened to me and the time of repair was extended by half an hour. :)
