Nice video! I used an X-Acto micro saw rather than a blade. Very neat, worked great, and no risk of personal injury. Opening the fob, I found that one of the tiny battery contact welds had broken. I bent the contact a little so that it touched the battery and the key began working again without replacing the battery. The 22-year-old batteries in both keys are still working fine! I bought my 2001 325i new. Your programming technique is good, but it'll work better if you hold the key right next to the ignition slot while pressing the buttons.
Worked like a charm. Didn’t eve have to go through the reprogramming step. Worked as soon as I swapped the battery. Had to modify the tabs on the Panasonic VL 2020 battery to get the fit just right. A little work with the dremel and no prob. First battery lasted 18 years. Hope this one does as well.
My key stopped open and lock the car a year ago, but there still was just enough power to use the emergency opening of the trunk (when the lock cylinder in the driver's door gave up). Even with a bad battery, it still charges a little bit every time you use it and that power can be enough for that emergency feature (for some reason THAT works, bot not the regular lock - why I don't know - perhaps a security feature, so you'll change the battery or key before it's totally gone). Another thing I noticed, is that when the battery is almost completely dead - the RFID will not get enough power to activate the gear selector for automatic transmission (the display will not show P, D or R) and kick-down, top gear and reverse lights will not work. Sometimes the car won't even start att all. But after letting the key sit in the lock with ignition turned on a while, it usually wakes up. With a new battery - everything works perfectly again. I used a CR2025 a while, waiting for the online orders of proper VL2020 batteries. Make sure to buy VL2020 with 90 degree connectors, so it will fit on the circuit board. Flexible (but strong) glue is easier to use than those super glues, I found out.
Not when the battery doesn't last much longer and/or requires this much work to replace said battery when it inevitably goes bad. The case isnt even user friendly!! Unfortunate
when you look for a guide to replace the battery and realise the video that tells you how to do it comes from one of your "prefered" youtubers lol, still don't know if i an be assed doing this for the spare key on my e46 convertible lol, thanks Jake!
Also, did you know you can hold down the unlock button for a long time and all the windows and sunroof will open? I think holding lock does the opposite too.
The Sega Dreamcast used a similar rechargeable coin cell for its date/time clock The modern method of repair is to desolder the charging circuit, add a coin cell slot, then put in a cheaper non-rechargeable cell
I just replaced the car battery in my e46 convertible and this looks easy in comparison. It's great that it was in the trunk but it's like they went out of there way to make it difficult to remove and then resecure it. At one point I thought I had everything in and secure but I then realized I had it in backwards. And yes I have a college degree.😳
@@davidoconnell3834 the up side of a battery in the boot (trunk :) ) is that it does not suffer from the engine bay heat which shortens the lifespan. It is more difficult to get it out though.
Interesting video, if your previous battery tested at 3 volts then it was not dead, strange how it did not work and you tried reprogramming the EWS with the key before deciding to replace the battery.
I found that you need to switch it on and off in the ignition 3 times in a row before you push the buttons the way you did. It didn’t work when I did it just once but another video showed a guy doing it three times and it worked immediately. Otherwise thanks very much. Good luck!
Well, I am afraid to tell you that the super glue repair may not last too long. Instead there is a more durable solution, a click housing key. The new housing is then just clicked together and holds up quite well and much better then super glue. Design is the same as BMW stock and the little sticker on the lock button is cheaply available as a spare at BMW.
Could I assume that my friend's 2005 325xi has the same issue? His remote stopped working and dealer said it needs to be sent to another third party company for a battery replacement.
weird i replace my battery but still no luck for remote opening trunk/door/windows, key still works for starting up car or manually unlocking door with keyhole.
Guys if new key fob battery doesn’t work, locate the FZV Module (receiver for fob). Try a replacement from the junkyard maybe if it works then it’s confirmed. I’ve tried to order one but I might change key battery to help diagnosis while i’m waiting for cheap import
Nice work and who cares if the fitting is slightly askew. If anybody is looking that close at your key fob, it's because they're getting ready to write a check for the car. And by the way, is that spelled. " spew, spoo, spough, or spuu" ??? ✨👌👍✨
BMW know their vehicles will outlast the battery in the key, which is good for 10-15 years so they want you to go to their dealerships and buy another key. But luckily ebay supply you with all you need to fix the key and BMW get no more money.
@@davidduncanson3847 and boy do BMW charge for the replacement key, all sorts of cock and bull about security, deleting the key from their database, reprogamming..... all control bullshit to justify their extortion of a $200 replacement key because a $2 battery is not charging..... they are arrogant thieves!
Well, the thing is that they did it that way because the battery shouldn't ever need to be replaced if the key had been used regularly. Only reason they go bad is people leave keys unused for too long and the battery doesn't like that. But keys that are used regularly never have that problem. I, and many other people are still driving around with keys that still have the original battery.
This is a hack job , put your key on wireless charger , or Apple Watch charger overnight , then go in your car and reprogram it , putting the key in ignition , take it out press the unlock and lock button three times , your dead key will work again

Why did you have to and How did you modify the tabs? Did you buy the 180degree version of the VL2020 battery?

Today I learned they made keys that are charged by the car when in the ignition. Pretty freaking cool really!
Not when the battery doesn't last much longer and/or requires this much work to replace said battery when it inevitably goes bad. The case isnt even user friendly!! Unfortunate
Yeah it’s pretty cool until the battery no longer work and they want to charge you $328 for one key
First of all thank you.
Second I just tried program key and it strat working on E38. Thank you 🙏
PS before replacing battery try programming guys.
How do you "try programming"? I am told that only the BMW dealers can do that and it's very expensive.
Thankyou sir. I have changed batterry. Nothing happened. Got angry. Now sitting in car. Saw your video. Solved problem! :))

Perfect timing. Got a text a few minutes ago that my dad couldn’t unlock his 05 X5 with the key. Pain.

Thanks! used it today and worked exactly as described
Thank for making is video. It save me some money on the battery replacement.
Done the same thing myself. As usual BMW didn't have to make what should have been a simply battery replacement so difficult.

Right !!! As with Everything else they touch. A**holes
Another thing that may be of some help, is charge it on an elec tooth brush base! Fixed my issue with fob not working
How do you do that
@@Nardology put the tooth brush base on charge.. put the key on top of it.. balance it on top of the base

thats why you need to carry and use spare key to be charged, all is explained in manual also :)

have a question, what rims are those on your vehicle ?
thanks again....

Is there a link for this shell?

Very likely. I’m actually fighting with another issue with my keys not working consistently that I believe is the fault of the antenna amplifier.
Good video Eddie 🇬🇧👍
Good Job jake!
What battery 🔋 do you need???
kind of odd how it would not work w/ the battery that was in there when it did have a charge.
weird i replace my battery but still no luck for remote opening trunk/door/windows,

Same for me. Wondering what else it could be.
Any luck figuring it out? I’m in the same boat. Trying to reprogram but also no luck

Good morning Jake
Good video! Love the QT stores! Where are the terminals for the key to connect with the circuit board to recharge while in the ignition?
Yes! 100% time!
great video but you should assemble the key and run the super glue in
You are great 👍
Tasty beverage🥤 ✅️ Great Video! Thank you😎
thank you alot super helpfull
You need to race it against the Insight.
Same unit for a mini R52
What did the engineer smoke when they decided to make this construction?!
Thanks.
What size wheels are those?
what type of rims do you have?
What color is your car? Orient blue metallic?
I change the battery but it didn’t work , my car won’t unlock. I put back the old battery it the same thing.
What did you eventually do to get the car unlocked? I believe he used a process with the car already unlocked…
What wattage solder gun should i get?
Nothing on a BMW is easy except spending lots of money to keep it going.

The fact that this was designed as a non serviceable battery says a lot about the expected life of the vehicle

crazy design, glad you could over ride BMW's stupid process! brilliant !!! I would have gone to BMW and spend too much money
Little steps.
BMW is sometimes to much to handle, all that to replace the keyfob.
BMW have to make everything complicated even a battery change for your fob😒😒

What size is the batterya
Why would BMW make a key fob that you can't change the battery? answer to sell you a replacement at an extortionate price
Because it's a lithium ion battery that charges wirelessly and theoretically has no need to ever be replaced
Standard German mission objective.... Make everything much more complicated than it needs to be.
Battery just ran out. This video could't come at a better time!
f this ill just unlock my door manually lol!! thx for video tho
just heat the blade slightly first
I seem to be early on this video

Some time the gym will have glue
Yeah, my dealer told me I need a new key for $1B. So UA-cam. Thanks, Jake!
Just like Clarkson would have done it
Heyyyyyyy
Hey
WAT
Eyyyyy
Worst key ever!
You americans like to talk much, this video could have been shorter double the time 😂😂
BMW had to be special because everyone have $ to buy a new key just because the battery died.
