Thank you so much for your comment! I make these videos for you all! I am so glad that you were empowered enough to do it yourself!!! Honestly, I know we are all capable of so much more and all it takes is a little seeking of knowledge to build that confidence. I hope you are able to keep up with the other hiccups your car gives you along the way. There are so many people sharing fix it videos that it's worth giving it a shot!
Lol.. I was about to tear my door apart to replace the door lock and mechanism.. I'm so glad I watched this, because you reminded me of this failure on these cars.
I’m one of the least handy people ever. I ordered a repair kit from Amazon and sat down with this video to do the repair. The exact same part was broken. I replaced everything. However when it came to the spring, that was hard because I don’t have a vise. I used a pen and sort of muscles my way through it. This video helped me SO much. Thank you for the time you spent and for the excellent explanations! Well done! Oh and I did the repair to a 2003 E46 M3.
Thats how you do a video about changing parts! Keep doing it man, voice sounds clear and good, you give all details, impossible to mess it up with such explanation. Keep doing it!
Super helpful I found myself this early morning with the key stuck 5 am to be exact & im fortunate that you made this video now I’m just waiting for the pieces to arrive tomorrow so I can install & put it back together
I did this in 10 mins with the use of this video. Even linked the kit in the description. Thank you very much, now I can lock and unlock my doors again!!
Notice the piece at 3:04, there's a side that is higher than the other. The way you put it in makes it very hard to put the spring in there, since it rests higher on that ridge and needs more force to compress it. I put that piece flipped 180 degrees, so that the spring rests flat with the bottom of the piece. That makes installing the spring much easier and I suspect that's why you had so much trouble. I don't know if it's supposed to be that way, but it works fine and makes more sense to me. Anyway hope it helps other people. Great tutorial btw.
I just bought the kit! I have a 330i 2003 and this happened to me at Fred Meyers at 10:40 pm after I just bought a whole shopping cart of groceries lol 😂
Thank you so much! This video saved me money and a headache. One tip for others from my own experience. Take the entire lock apart, clean it and grease it. 1. you might as well since you already replacing the hardware. 2. it was fun and I got to learn how the lock functions completely. 3. it was easier to put in the replacement parts (for some reason they were hard to fit and I realized it was because there was just so much gunk and grime there)
Great video thanks, helped me getting mine apart and back together, for some reason on mine the pin was missing and the horseshoe clip was broken in two, not only that but judging by the colours it looks like my rotatey doo-dad was broken a long time ago, a mystery for sure. EDIT: and for anybody else watching, as has already been pointed out, the rotating part should be put back 180 degrees to what was shown in the video, makes putting the spring back a little easier.
If you're able to, do this project with all doors unlocked, and/or all windows open. If the fob in your key is working, hold the front button down for a few seconds, and it should automatically open all the windows. Equally, when windows are open, hold the front button for a few seconds, and it should automatically close all the windows
Pretty easy to follow the only step I would add is the 2nd collar piece that you put in (the one the spring has to work around) if you look at the bottom of the lock you can see 2 pieces sticking up that are oriented specifically for your lock. This will help anyone who mightve been in my situation where the piece that broke (same one in the video) was obliterated beyond all recognition.
Thank you very much! Did it right now. Started all over like 5 times because when I pulled out the lock it completely broke up so I couldn't get the key out. That was such a pain in the ass. The spring thing is so hard haha
My keyless entry stopped working at first. Then the door tumbler was failing. I repaired it before it completly broke. After reassembly, I installed it and hoping the keyless worked again. Tried reprogramming the key again but still didnt work. This is the 4th or 5th time Ive done this repair on 2 different E46's. Took about 30 mins total. All for under $30.
Ok so I did it and my spring decided to leave and get stuck behind the mechanism. Now I might need to break the spare parts to fix it. You don't have to tension the spring as in the video, it works fine without tensioning.

Hi Mike, I'm trying to get "rekeying" information for a 1998 540i trunk lock. My key will not move in my original cylinder (corrosion?), and the slot is stuck at 90 degrees in a clockwise direction (horizontal). The cylinder allows very slight movement in a counter-clockwise direction, but that's it, and it has no effect on the open/close function. I have secured a replacement lock (from the junkyard) that needs to be rekeyed to the ignition key profile. Most locksmiths seem clueless, as "it's a BMW." The local BMW dealership has quoted $315 for a new barrel, which for me seems excessive. How difficult is it to rekey the cylinder?
My lock core slipped out and some of the brass guides came out... I imagine there's a specific order to this. Any ideas or help as to how I can fix this new issue?
Big thank you to you for this video as I was just about to also take off the hole door panel lol which Now by watching your video! I have discovered you don't have to do this! 😉👌🏻👍🏻
I can't seem to get the lock out! I unscrewed it beyond its limit, but the lock won't release. Should the door be locked, pull and hold the handle while trying to remove?
If you got all the hardware off it, perhaps it needs a love tap. Cover with folded towel and whack it gently to suggest it release from the grime and possible corrosion. Monkey taps. Not gorilla taps. From the door? Or the mechanism?!

Turn the Allen screw a quarter turn, try to remove the lock, then another quarter turn. You'll feel the Allen screw wanting to drop into the door, so be careful you don't unscrew it too much

This video has one incorrect bit: Shows spring being pulled over a post with shoulders. NO! the post with shoulders goes on 180o on the opposite side. The spring is pulled over the plain post on the other side of the ring.

@@paulroderick1659 good luck!
Can anyone tell me what s the name of the replacement so i can order it?
There are links in the description.
Hi need it how do I order it?
@@robdude1969 Door lock tumbler repair
Mine won't lock or turn since I readjusted the door
Take it apart completely, start again
i cant get it to come out how far can I turn the allen screw will it fall out or apart ? thank you
Turn the Allen screw a quarter turn, try to remove the lock, then another quarter turn. You'll feel the Allen screw wanting to drop into the door, so be careful you don't unscrew it too much
Je ne comprends pas lorsque j’ai remis le morceau, j’ai fermé à clé mais la clé est resté coincée, savez vous pourquoi ?
Amazing! Thank you so much!
Very helpful ! Thanks for taking the time.
if your lock incompletely broken, can you have unmade by bmw to work with your key
St. Da Vinci I’m sure the dealer can do this repair for you. I’m not a fan of their pricing.
Thanks you so much. It solved my problem
It is hard to pull off even tho screw is loose
mine isnt turning after the repair what am i doing wrong
take it apart and try again... clean well and lube. be sure the lock core turns with your key before you install in car.
Excellent. Thank you.
My e46 have problem ,open door warning dont show ,how fix this problem maybe you know
George Sharimanov check your switch on the door jamb. Is it loose? Is it broken? Missing? I have had them wear so much I had to add material to the post to make it actuate.
Will this work on the 320i
Yes
Mine is like stuck and i cant even move the horshoe retainer
clean and lube... good luck!
Worked one time, and now my key is stuck inside the lock cylinder. What should I do? Horse shoe is turned so it wont come out.
oh man, good luck!
Ouch!
How did you solve the problem?
Help! My lock core is loose and is stuck in the cylinder. What do I do?
You can get a new one or repair with the kit. Both should have links in description. Simple tools and a little puzzle solving skills. Clean all the parts. Use your key to help remove the core.
I’ll try, thanks
What is problem if i can open front door with key but not button? All other doors work. I can lock the door with button but not open
Just a guess here but maybe the components inside of your key fob are worn out and you need a new key
@@maggieann7040 same problem with both keys, think it is door actuator
You are the best!!!
@@kimba9100 so, this helped?
*****AT **2:23**, DO NOT LET THE LOCK CORE FALL OUT*****
A great video. However, at 2:23, Rob mentions in passing that "the lock core could fall out."
Trust me, you do not want the lock core to fall out, or you will discover a whole new level of hell.
Use sellotape or similar to keep the lock core inside the mechanism.
*****I REPEAT: DO NOT LET THE LOCK CORE FALL OUT*****
Uh oh. How bad was it?
I replace my door cylinder and closed the door now and it won’t door help please
Did you get it fixed?
Did this and now the car door unlocks but will not lock any suggestions?
Take the lock apart and start again
@@LoveableRogue i was told my locking module needed too be changed that’s like$400 i am gucci 🤣
Why not close the door with the remote key?
A flat main battery, and/or a dead key battery
Thanks a lot for your time to show us how to do it
Thanks for the thanks!! I hope you fixed your lock!
My fob is dead, and my lock core is busted. Any other way I could get in?
Open the US trunk = UK boot at the back of the car, pop the clips on the back of the seats to fold them forwards, and if necessary, get a child to climb through the small gap with the key in their pocket
my battery is dead too what should i do?
Open the trunk with key and charge or replace battery. Use remote to open door. Order a lock kit and fix your lock core in the door. Good luck!
@@robdude1969 just tried and my trunk lock is doing the same :D im deadlocked outside
@@oliverheldens1298 How did you solve the problem?
I hammered a crowbar through my trunk lock then got my trunk open and charged the battery. It was the only option besides breaking window.@@LoveableRogue
This video has one incorrect bit: Shows spring being pulled over a post with shoulders. NO! the post with shoulders goes on 180o on the opposite side. The spring is pulled over the plain post on the other side of the ring.
at what time? My lock hasn't given any problems since this fix. I'm curious what is different?
@@robdude1969 The part you replaced, the one that was broken, was flipped. I guess it could still rotate flipped, but it's supposed to go the other way, as it has a crevice made especially for the part underneath.
@@HooperCross Thank you
I need this but for m3! :/ any link for Greg m3 part?
So I can stick my key in and it feels normal but when I turned the key to lock/unlock it nothing happens, thankfully the car is unlocked. I can even use the same key to start the car no problem but I’m just worried I won’t ever be able to lock my car or unlock it if it some how locks.
QuantumKarma valid concerns, if you take that lock cylinder out, I bet it’s broken!
How would u get it out if the lock cylinder is already out?
Wow unbelievable! I thought that only happened to me. I ended up getting a new door because I concluded that some idiot JB welded it in. I had also found an extra cylinder in the door from the last time they had replaced it. Good luck, I looked for months on an explanation for removal without the core but no one ever had one.
Since the day I changed it eml light constantly shows up and whenever it does engine looses power, went to mechanic changed mt actuator and checked my electrics couldn't find the reason...Went to a different guy and found a fault with my lock so I had to take it off and it works fine, this is crazy I can't understand how a lock could affect the whole system
that's crazy! So what did you do?
What did you do?
@@LoveableRogue got fed up with it and gave it for scrap!! Got sick of keep throwing money around and no one being able to fix it...maybe I was just unlucky and bumped into shit mechanics, who knows
I replaced the broken part on my daughters BMW now when I turn the key left or right nothing happened, turn the key to the left and all the windows open including the sunroof and off course in the rain, some bad timing, any advice out there guys.Thanks.
OH NO! did you figure it out?
@@robdude1969 No I did replace the broken part and now the door locks are working and still ca not figure out why the windows were going up and down ,now the car is sold I got me a newer used V W Jetta great car for the money thanks for asking
