I've listened to tool since 96 it's infiltration into every part of my life and I'm not ready for fear enoculum so yeah it's a personal journey it's not specific to whatever another person thinks or feels. I don't know when I'll be ready for that journey to begin I live mostly in opiate,undertow,ten thousand days era. It still so much to absorb it's still unbelievably powerful to me and I don't know of a better ideal for living. I cannot even understand what he's saying in the new songs. It's another thing entirely. Those of you who just jump into are wasting your time because you don't follow what's being said either it's miles ahead of what's being understood in the current time line. You can say whatever but really think about it.. the albums are a series of stories opiate is how man destroyed man with false dogma and rediculas ideals that never were the truth undertow is how man destroyed mankind thru trying to put the peices back together but still was wrong and kept destroying everything and then thousand days is mourning the loss of the spiritual and physical lives and what could have been if it was not all destroyed by snake oil sales men past that point it's a long way to go to figure out the message but it's very deep and complicated. The band is Tool meaning their message is a tool to understand and figure things out it's unreal to me the closeness of thoughts and moments Alligned with this incredible experience. If that makes sense to you pay attention things are still to be revealed.. yes his mother too but it's not only about that. It was more of a advanced tool to get deeper Into the sadness and compassion.

Right? Once you realize it's Adam and Danny's band. Maynard is just the singer, and I've heard that he writes the vocals/lyrics last as a way of fitting in to what the composers have already written. It's one of the main reasons he is not a huge presence on-stage.

Absolutely Tool do this ... Aenima (the album) doesn't have 'filler' songs; it has palate cleansers. The Japanese concept of "ma" - the empty space between the spokes of a wheel that while immaterial, give it form.

and i have to say ive had the opposite experience. i am 26 and found tool last year when i picked up the guitar and decided to learn it with seriousness. and as i delve deeper into music theory the more i end up studying this as if its some sort of rosetta stone of music. a way of translation, if you will. putting some of the most abstract and difficult time sigs and theories in play and making it come across as something that can be taken in as a single breath. its on a different level of what other groups or artists are even attempting. tool could make any form of rock and do it well. they choose to sit down and create algorithms rather than do simple math.

Your knowledge of being a composer really kicks the reaction videos up to a whole new level. I have watched vocal reactions from coaches, but the reaction of the different instruments brings a refreshing view. You being able to pickup on the core tempo was amazing because I have watched this video probably 20 times and I struggle to keep up with all the different time signature changes! I have found one of my favorite new channels, great job Geebz!

When you realize the vocals are the rhythm and the drums are the lead it's easier to understand. Maynard moved his stage location to the back so he could watch Danny. Watching you search for one in the poly-rhythm was the best ;)
Danny is actually the lead. Justin and Maynard are constantly watching him for cues from Danny. Some have claimed Maynard simply does it bc he likes watching Danny, but really Danny is the control and leader of their performances

Tool's Pneuma is to me, the most perfect compilation of a rock song I've ever heard (sorry fellow Queen fans!). It is a work of art and their Magnum Opus, if I may (and I just did).
Lol, Pneuma is good but it is by no means their magnum opus. Only someone who's not very familiar with Tool's work would say that.
I dunno. 7empest combines three of their different music periods all into one magnificent auditory experience.
as a tool fan for like 9 months, it's my favorite song so far (mostly because it played perfectly during the peak of one of my strongest shroom trips). But i'm still discovering more of their songs I like after many many leisurely listens as I continue to live in this world. ~"A chance to be, alive and breathing"
Having owned and listened to all the Tools albums. Pneuma is the song that really stands out on this album. Descending is sick, 7empest is good, but Pneuma, the whole package of lyrics, the rhythmic changes, it really stands out among all of Tool's songs.

I’ve been to about 40 rock and metal concerts and hearing that live will stay in my memory forever. I have never heard a single guitar absolutely fill an entire arena like that. Doesn’t sound so special on recording but amazing moment live.

Dany Carey plays four different time meters at a time. Each hand and each foot all in different meters than the others. The mesh of these 4 musicians is incredible. They're all writing different books but are on the same page as the others.
As a bassist, I just love TooL the way the music draws you in is on another level, it's not just about listening.....its about hearing. I feel very fortunate to be able to hear these guys. Its magic, just pure magic.

Interesting the mention of Adam & Justin looking back at Danny for cues. In concerts (at least from the past few albums) Maynard is positioned off to one side of Danny, presumably to share cues all around but I believe I’ve heard also that he’s trying to maintain the focus on the entire band, not himself as the vocalist. Tool is amazing. ♥️

When you said, "Oh! Now they're going to go back and mess with ya," I laughed so hard. They love to sort of drag our emotions up and down with their songs. It's definitely a journey to really hear Tool and hang on every note.

Cleansing your sonic palate...best analogy I’ve heard for the 4/4 chorus of this song. Tool tends to do this pretty often in their music. Great reaction!
As a professional chef I REALLY appreciated that analogy too. In fact, if the opportunity ever presents itself, I'm stealing it and gonna work into a conversation hehe.
A journalist once said to Danny "you delve into odd meters often, but when you play in 4/4, it's like a celebration." He knows how and when to just straight up groove after working the odd times in Tool's songs.
The ability TOOL has to constantly resolve these different time signature changes in different places throughout the arrangement is nothing short of pure brilliance and talent. It’s ultimately what makes them so great and so unique. There will likely never be another band to do it as they have, and I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to bear witness to their musical masterpieces.
Actually first time I’ve watched a reaction from someone and listened to everything you said. Loved your insight. Keep your empathy for the musician and the meaning of songs and you will be a star:)

I think Danny is a hard hitter for sure. But he is so in control behind his kit. He plays with actual dynamics better than any drummer I've ever heard. He is a true master. A lot of time in heavy music it's just balls to the wall all the time on the drums. No dynamics at all. That is what sets Danny apart from other metal or prog metal drummers. He knows when to go balls out but he also knows when to keep things quieter and let the other instruments breath more. It gives the song more life to the listener.

Tool are renowned for their use of pentatonic meter, and I really think you will like the meter changes in Schism... All 47-ish of them.

Every Tool performance is amazing
As a drummer, for me there are lots of delicious tidbits here, but I think my favourite is the fact that the volume of the crosstick in the beginning and end oscillates between pianissimo and forte! (To those who don’t know what that means, watch the crosstick (where the stick is flat on the snare and the notes are played on the rim of the drum… it goes from soft to loud and then fades away)… If you haven’t tried it, certainly do! It’s not as easy as it sounds if your independence is basic because the dynamics only oscillate on the left hand, but not the right. The right is always constant. Then, of course, is the middle instrumental section with the mind-blowing orchestration of what’s essentially Swiss triplets around the kit. Sounds wonderful. I have always maintained that the most satisfying drummers are ones who are able to make complex things sound easy. It’s fairly easy to make easy things sound complex - just throw in more notes and you’re all set. But to arrange your parts in such a way that everything sounds cohesive AND grooves while requiring you to EARN the ability to execute it? Well, that’s why some of these cats are masters. Another great example of that is Vinnie Colaiuta’s work on Sting’s Seven Days. Sounds simple to a non-musician. Try playing it the way he does. Best of luck. 😉
I’m glad you broke down what Justin was doing at the 7:07 mark. His playing during that section is never talked about. The airy, flange effect (could be wrong, I’m not a musician) he’s playing sounds so cool. Just one of those cool minor details I didn’t recognize on first listen.
You are entirely correct, it is a flanger. I do want to give the guitar some credit too: it is still playing the exact same riff as before the change, butt stopped the palm-muting. Definitely contributes to the "airyness" to let the notes sustain.

Absolutely this !! A more reserved side of Tool , but for good reason. The back to back tracks deal with the passing of Maynard’s mother. The album title “10,000 Days” is actually a reference to the amount of time she spent partially paralyzed after having a stroke. Part 1 is amazing , Part 2 is nothing short of a masterpiece , in my opinion.

There is no comparison. Tool took that song and completely owned it. In particular the instrumental section, which in Zep just feels kind of wayward. Tool honed it down and translated it into their own language: they *composed* it, where Zep was sorta freewheeling ...

During the song you can see Maynard make his way to the back of the stage. When asked about it he said, "I wanted to watch Danny play." Fucking love Tool.
Hopefully when the world finishes melting, Tool will go back on tour and give you a chance to check them out live.
I was lucky enough to see them a few times over the years and can vouch, that they're simply amazing on stage.

As I understand it, during the beginning of the "drum solo", Adam was using an effect called a bit crusher. It makes a guitar sound like an 80's video game soundtrack
I love the fact that you are one of very few reactors who caught his mistake towards the end of the song. Bravo sir!! Goes to show that even the best make mistakes. But it's really impressive that he was able to carry on and not lose focus or where he was at in the count.

@@mattwilson8298 He does! Right about the 15 minute mark of Geebz' video. Geebz clearly catches the mistake because he reacts to it (non-verbally). It's easy to miss because Danny is able to just quickly carry on without missing a beat.

I'm going to lower myself to begging that you react to Puscifer - Bullet Train to Iowa. It's the same vocalist as Tool, in case you weren't aware; the 3 groups he fronts are all amazing, he seems to attract genius and produce as such, consistently.
The production and composing of Bullet Train are mind-blowing, in my opinion, and I really want to see an expert experience and dissect it. Mat Mitchell did a brilliant job composing/producing the album and somehow made 80's synths sound modern and fresh, while giving familiar warm and fuzzy vibes. I'm glad you're making a place here, subbing for more gloriously detailed analysis.
Their Arco Santi show was flawless! I love the record entirely.

My music teacher used to call these type of time sigs "borrowing". You take from the bar ahead, pay it back a few bars later, borrow some more later on. We learned later about syncopation.

When you said it felt Rush like, it is like Danny is channeling Neil's spirit and Neil is vicariously living through moments of Danny's brilliance.

After listening to this album around 3837455937474 times, I feel like 7empest really might be Danny's greatest work. The speed, timing, power, agility, the STAMINA.
Everyone seems to focus on Adam on 7empest, but, I think it's just Danny and Adam battling. Which creates musical magic.
