Lol not to take anything away from this guy's musical prowess, but he did mention in his previous video that he was going to react to this song next BECAUSE of the fibonacci thing, so, he did actually already know about it beforehand. It would be pretty remarkable to pick up on something like that without knowing in advance.

because its pretty sharing knowledge, its more than just music. Well its what art was always supposed to be, but we've reduced most of art into its component parts to make it easier to sell. Its that feeling of someone getting the same development or experience out of something as you have knowing what kind of effect it could have on their future.

6:15 You hit the nail right on the head. The band writes music without Maynard. Maynard hears what they create and writes lyrics based on what he hears from the rest of the band. That is why Maynard fits into that pocket so perfectly. It's because that is the space he finds in the music. This is why tool takes their sweet ass time writing albums. Their writing process is insane and they are perfectionists.

So TOOL has a very special space in my heart, and life..I once lamented to a client that my grandfather was a jazz musician, multi instrumentalist and that the music Gene skipped me, as I have no musical or instrumental skill. He, staring at my artwork, simply said, "no it did not, my friend"
That was the greatest compliment I've ever gotten for my work

My friend, I've watched a lot of reaction channels on Tool's music and I have to say this reaction was one of the best I've seen.
Not only is your enthusiasm genuine and infectious, but you really know the music and know why it's so good.
And something that really impressed me was that you are the first person I've ever seen recognise the usage of the Fibonacci sequence in this song without knowing about it prior. That is impressive!
I was thoroughly entertained by everything you had to say and I hope you do many many more Tool reactions. I hope after this and Sober you didn't go listen to the rest of their discography offline because I can tell you that I will certainly be back for every Tool reaction that you do.
Their music has been life changing for me, can't wait to see what you think about their other stuff - spoiler... they have no bad songs!

This song is ABSOLUTELY using the Fibonacci sequence, if anyone didnt tell you. Maynard and friends specifically worked it into this album and this song.
    Check this out:
Lateralus’s title-track’s introduction lasts one minute and 12 seconds and the numbers 0, 1, 1, 2 are the first four in the Fibonacci sequence. The first verse kicks in on 97 seconds, which is approximately 1.618 minutes, i.e. the golden ratio. Each verse is also 55 seconds long, which is the 11th number in the sequence. The syllables in those verses match the sequence too, peaking at 13 (coincidentally, the same number of total album tracks) and then again in a descending order thereafter. Furthermore, the time signature of the song’s main riff is 9/8, 8/8 and 7/8, and 987 is the 17th number in the sequence.

the beauty of the song is that every single note was written according to these principles, and probably 2/3 of the lyrics are like "hey, quit thinking about it so much and just enjoy the feeling of it. embrace the nature of the universe showing itself through music." and you can't help but do just that, because it's so beautiful.

Seeing your face when you were trying to figure it out and saying stuff like "Wow! That's so cool!" made me really happy. Because of how my brain works it's always rushing so when I can focus on a complex song and workout the time signatures, tempos, instruments and their quirks, etc it really makes me happy. I can't explain it. I've always been weird and it's tough to explain myself sometimes but it's amazing. Music is one of the few things I know that can help me focus as I get distracted easily. I'm always trying to multitask.
Tool in general has helped me by giving me the tools necessary for many things in life. It's then about me learning to use said tools and the music helps with that too. I was already on a path of becoming a better me when Tool showed up in my life. Letting go of our ego, having patience, letting go of grudges, realize we are more together than apart. In a spiritual way, we are one all connected. It gets super deep but I thank this band for saving my life this time. Before it was Deftones for other reasons. I had emotions I needed to let out. But Tool is about wisdom and curiosity and I thank them for teaching me so much.

11:07 is possibly my favourite section of all Tool songs, other than maybe the big "Overwhelmed as one would be!" part in Rosetta Stoned, or possibly "Sound the dread alarm!" from Descending (my actual favourite Tool song).
That section of Lateralus is just so cool, and when DC comes in with the duh, duh, duh, duh, pff, pff, duh, duh, duh, duh, pff, pff drum beat underneath that driving JC bass line, AJ guitar part which both fills out the space but perfectly leaves a void (somewhere, somehow) for the other 3 members of the band to just perfectly fit into this sonic tapestry. And of course finally, but certainly not least, MJK just adds so much beauty to a haunting, inspiring and so damn groovy instrumental section.
Just wow! How good is this band, and what a stroke of luck I have been given to be both alive at this time and to also be aware and able to appreciate this mastery. This is our modern day Beethoven, Bach... our musical Vincent Van Gough, Leonardo da Vinci. Tool are amazing and I hope they are still revered in a hundred years time when every one of us reading my comment is long gone, and our kids are almost gone too, and their kids are like "wow my grandad was so lucky to get this music when it was first recorded, and enjoyed decades of wonder every time he listened to it...many times each day!

In the release interview for Lateralus with Rolling Stone, Tool said they were moved by the harsh criticism of Aenima being too simple, musically. They wanted to create a deeper, more technical sound with Lateralus. It is their most meditative CD for sure. To see Aenima and Lateralus being reviewed so much across the tube... 20+ years after they were released. It shows the critics were wrong. If you go back and listen to Opiate and Undertow, you will be able to see why they were signed to a 5 album contract so early in their career. Every member is at the absolute top of their game in terms of their professions. The Drummer Danny Carey is quite simply the greatest Rock drummer alive today. At 10:25 the bass guitar laying down the beat or rhythm (heartbeat percussion introduced at the beginning of this masterpiece)....Danny hitting that highhat and then changing it up while also adding the same heartbeat rhythm on the bass kick off the bass guitar was simply insane!!!!

@15:57 Exactly - go back a few seconds and watch the clock: The guitar lightly trailing the strings here (@15:57) rings the chord so nicely. It's almost a Lifeson flourish. I think this is the only time it's audible in this song. My favorite tool song and album btw.

Adam Jones is capable of playing traditional and technical riffs...but he says he usually ends up treating his guitar parts as more of a separate/extra vocal part. Perfect for this band. You literally couldn't replace anyone in this band and end up with "Tool". They are also aware of this fact as Danny AND Maynard have said separately that "We're just gonna keep writing music together until one of us dies or something."

  • @mpfiveO
    @mpfiveO 4 роки тому +32

Great Reaction, I think more then any other Band, Maynard’s voice is treated as another instrument. He sings within the music, instead of over it. You earned a sub, to watch the trip down the rabbit hole. In regard to the Fibonacci Sequence, count the syllables of the opening verse.

    • @jonathonfee2542

Also, the lead singer (Maynard) doesn't sing his first note until approximately 1.6 minutes into the song. 1.618 is the golden ratio, which is almost exactly the numerical relationship between the Fibonacci numbers.

@@Vexelpops1 I think he's just getting older; maybe he didn't want to tax his voice too much? There's a few places where his voice sounds incredible (descending for me), but I'll admit it took me a couple of listens to 'get' fear inoculum. On first listen I felt like the songs were delivered a bit slow. I see loads of people raving about tempest and its one of my least favourite tracks tbh. I could listen to pneuma/invincible/descending on a loop though.

As you spotted yes the timing follows the spial, so do the lyrics, so does the timing of where they start, the total time of the song, the fact this song is the centered on the album, the entire album follows it as well..... RARE a first timer catches it.
