Just came here after reading about Gordon McQueen's dementia diagnosis. A Scottish footballing legend & this goal in particular will never be forgotten.
The commentator does exactly what is right when goals are scored: Lets us hear the crowd cheering. Instead of speaking right away so that we as viewers don't feel the atmosphere in the stadium. Many of today's commentators could learn from that.
From the late 1950s BBC Scotland was guilty of cutting in and ruined the atmosphere with a sound drop along with the commentary team sounding like they had a heavy cold with a clothes peg on their nose. I was at this game - one of the best days of my life. I was 14 and my dad considered me old enough to take along for the first time. Sunny London was a sea of tartan that day and we were stood behind the goal where King Kenny scored what turned out to be the winner and I remember being scared that the whole stand was gonna come down when Scotland scored - it was literally rocking underfoot! Outside after the game people were walking round with huge squares of Wembley turf on their heads and one guy ripped us off a big chunk and gave it to my dad who left it on the Tube! The next morning he cut a square of turf from our front lawn, painted a white spot on it and took it to the pub and told all his English mates that it was the penalty spot near from which Kenny knocked in the winner! They were raging! England Scotland was life and death in those days. Still is really....
I am originally from Wembley and used to bunk into games as a kid (scallywags). My friend (13yrs) and me (11yr) at the time went to this game carrying St George Cross flags through the drunken Scottish crowd. They cheered us on, offered us whiskey and thanked us for coming, Edwards army stayed at home, that day. The Scots were drunk as Lords but we'll natured, they were tying scarves together and scaling the walls of Wembley like a castle seige😂. Very good team whereas England's was not among their strongest and they lost at Wembley 1-0 to a good Wales team (which had reached Euro 1/4 finals the previous year). A pity the Scottish conveyor belt of talent has long dried up and a pity the home championship was stopped- there was a lot of passion involved

Scotland are getting ready for their world cup final this Tuesday against england. They run on and destroy the pitch every time they win (once every blue moon) because it's the biggest achievement for them.
I remember this Scotland quite well. Probably, the best Caledonian team of all times. Very next year, due to lack of discipline, it would collapse. Although they beat Holland in a superbly exciting game, by goals difference the dutch passed to the zone B of next round.
To Alastair Mackey: I'd say. This was puzzling: The same notorious England fans in the spirit of the times at the height of their hooligan heydays. The Scottish fans took over Wembley whilst fervent and high-spirited. Even in those days, England supporters slinked back, joining the mice and crickets.
1998 was the last time they qualified for a tournament and they still show england fans up everywhere they go. Tartan Army are considered the best international fans in the world. English fans just get pished up on their special brew and fosters and start fights everywhere! Better yet, get kicked to their arse most the time! this is coming from a Welshman as well!

Second half of the seventies seems that Scotland was better than England. I believe it was in 1978 that Scotland played their best World Cup performance also. XD Haven't yet been watching World Cup back then - I started in 1986. Always have been cheering for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland XD
In those days, these two nations were more evenly matched. Scotland had some great players, most of them played in the English Division One (pre-premiership). Over the last 20 odd years, England have dominated the results in this fixture against the "Auld Enemy". The pitch invasion was unforgiveable and was probably the one of reasons why the Home Internationals were abolished?:

Me and my fellow English junior school mate were playing about at his house one day back then just after that game and his Jock Dad ( his Mum was English ) who'd been at the game took us in to the garden and proudly pointed at an approx 5 inch x 5 inch tuft of grass with a small bit of that low cheap looking plastic edge fence thingy squared off round it..... and proclaimed...." Look lads- Wembley!! LOL
5:26 We took over London 100,000 Scot’s to London knowing we’re heading to World Cup and England weren’t AGAIN, the penalty decision was the worst of all time. Don Revie went on to manage for mega bucks leaving a sinking ship to go and manage in the Middle East ( Saudi I think ) and instead of the world’s best manager at the time Brian Clough ,Ron Greenwood became New England manager. Greenwood travelled to Argentina 78 and he and colleagues from the FA and arrived at Iran’s training camp who were in Scotland’s group and gave them a lecture on the Scot’s to emphasise hacking Archie Gemmel as he was too dangerous and the best way to play against us. They also handed over a dossier on the whole squad. Some hacks at Fleet Street admitted they had explicit orders from top bosses to try and do anything to disrupt the team. Believing it was coming from British establishment fed up of us going down to Wembley and completely taking over humiliating them and the lucky 80,000 fans who managed to get in we’re helping themselves to parts of the pitch after invading the pitch and snapping the goal posts pissed as farts. These hacks managed to bribe the Argie police to arrest one of the players and stick him in jail when they got there , some bullshit about a watch being stolen. Just bullshit. Kiss and tell stories about having sex with player’s who were married. Reporting that the players were on the piss and arguing about bonuses with the SFA and rent a mob singing all night at the hotel keeping the players up all night with power cuts. Just got out of order. Scot players weren’t used that type of pressure and scrutiny. The Truth came out eventually. These tactics were honed to enslave an empire, put these Scottish riffraff in there place. I thought we were supposed be from the same country. Absolutely despicable. If you want verification of these facts they’re widely available but of course the BBC never reported it.
Dear G. Son: I appreciate your elucubrated paragraph. You wrote: _"I thought we were supposed to be from the same country."_ I agree: puzzling. We should love all of Great Britain. This schism emphasizes the problems between UK and USA, and other West Indian countries criticizing cultures. Coloureds in Chicago will consternate and consume citizens.
Jesus, does the sense of victimhood with you celts never end? You did shite at the 78 World Cup because you shipped 3 goals to Peru, it isn't some rabid conspiracy. Since 78, there hasn't been a single tournament where Scotland have done better than England. That's probably a conspiracy, too...
No Law , Baxter , Bremner or Johnstone but this was the best Scotland "team" of all time and if Stein had been manager they could've reached the semis in Argentina ( not possibly won it like Mr Optimistic Macleod ridiculously egged up ) .
No way Scotland would have been one of the top four teams there (though there were no 'semis' as such'.) But I agree that Scotland should have done better in Argentina and would have been far better organised and had their feet on the ground with Stein in charge. It was basically all over for them after they ran into a Peru team in red hot form in the opening match.

Ouch! Johnson smashes into a camerman at 5.03 - the poor snapper wouldn't have had time to get a pic of the winner lol.

I agree: puzzling.
You forgot the bit about Princess Di being assassinated
Back when Scotland were a feared international side.
Another international team who are now failed by blazers who are behind the times, sadly.
'Back when Scotland were a feared international side.'
Feared by who?..
+TheVilla Aston by eveyone ,all we done then was run riot
@@thevillaaston7811 Your lot for a start.
It was absolutely impossible for the Scottish goalkeeper to save the penalty with this position of his legs
una bella partita
No Law , Baxter , Bremner or Johnstone but this was the best Scotland "team" of all time and if Stein had been manager they could've reached the semis in Argentina ( not possibly won it like Mr Optimistic Macleod ridiculously egged up ) .
No way Scotland would have been one of the top four teams there (though there were no 'semis' as such'.) But I agree that Scotland should have done better in Argentina and would have been far better organised and had their feet on the ground with Stein in charge. It was basically all over for them after they ran into a Peru team in red hot form in the opening match.
'they could've reached the semis in Argentina'
...and then woke up.
@@thevillaaston7811 You are so jealous of this Scottish team it’s so obvious to everyone 😂 just be grateful we only have 5 million population and not 55 million like the English or we would be totally invincible.

Get real. We see more of Halley's Comet than we do of Scotland at the World Cup.
That bloke billy Popper from Millwall he may not be the hardest bloke in the world. But his heart was in the right place. Steam in never leave ya m8 sbehind what am igoona be called a coward then
what an atmosphere at these games not like todays all seater stadiums 85000 scots away in london what a party
Yea, the ground smashed up, shops robbed - a right knees up.
@@thevillaaston7811: The teef and robbers were not good. The violence was the downside of their fervency: hence, the reason to build the all-seater-stadiums. The clubs are trying to put out the over-the-top flames of passion and discourage hooliganism in the stadium. ------------ The game has been sanitized: sad, It's better than being trampled underfoot with supporters shirking statutes, soiling the system.
Some great names in this Scotland side.
I was 7 and in my first year watching football and from 1982 I would question how many England fans were actually at Wembley,The scots seemed to outnumber England every time and the English never brought up a great support to Hampden.
They came, they saw, they conquered.......then they took the goalposts apart!
It was this game and the total disrespect of my team that started and fuelled my hatred of the sweaty socks ( jocks ) ...
I hate England for selling this country down the pan !
11 yesrs after winng world cup and still no wingers no width scotlands 2nd came from a wingers cross
I remember working in Newcastle Central station and Scotland fans returned north over a period of weeks. They know how to celebrate 😂😂😂
