- Jinky Johnstone's performance against England at Wembley stadium. England proved to be too tough to handle for the disjointed Scotland team but Johnstone was still able to impress 91000 fans with his dazzling feints and skills.

As a Leeds fan I know from experience in 1970 how good JJ was . Terry Cooper was a great defender for us but he really struggled against JJ in the 70 European Cup semis as well as this game . Also it shows how influential Billy Bremner was as he's always in the camera shot whichever part of the pitch the action is .
Mike. I was there. Two great Scots warriors. Both always gave 100 %. I love the famous picture of Billy with Dave Mackay. Leeds were awesome in those days.
Disliked Billy for both Leeds and Scotland, but he would be worth a fortune today. As you say everywhere on that pitch.

Wee Jinky absolutely tortured Inter Milan in the European Cup Final in Lisbon in 1967 when Celtic became the first UK club to win the trophy. The only way they could stop him was to kick him. Tragically struck down by MND and no longer with us! RIP wee man!

@@garywright7127 No offence, mate. What I mean is I've heard of him so I clicked on the video and I just saw a wonderful player doing things that no one else on the pitch was even attempting. I'm a Leeds fan and I know we had great Scottish players in the 70s, but I wasn't around. But when we won the top flight in 92, McAllister and Strachen were pivotal. All the best.

As a Celtic fan of nearly 70 i was lucky enough to have watched Jinky , he was one of the best i have ever seen and one of my favourite players when he consider the money players are paid now compared too back then it is obscene , not only that the wee man was so funny and had a heart of Gold R.I.P. wee man always remember you Hail Hail

Jinky was something else. He along with George Best were the best dribblers in the British Isles (with all due respect to Sir Stanley Matthews). I grew up watching both of them on the 1960s, and they were out of this world. Both of them left us too soon.

Saw him at the tail end of his career at Sheffield United, a shadow of his former self, don't think I ever saw my father more disappointed in a player, spent days praising him after he signed
Nobody can be at the top of their game forever. The man had his demons, he’d done everything in his career by that point.

An absolute legend! I remember him as a kid when he used to visit his sister in law down in Bothwell Lanarkshire as Jimmy used to be out running down from Viewpark Uddingston. He would stop and play football with all the weans (kids) me included. I’ll never ever forget those days. Some of us wore Rangers shirts but that didn’t make a difference to him as he rose above that narrow minded mind set as he was all about football. My dad was from Viewpark and Jimmy had a cup of tea at ours before going to see Francis. Apparently one of his idols was Garrincha. For me he was one of the best players of all time and up there in terms of ability with the greats. He just didn’t get the recognition that he deserved. Even now with the very popular EA Sports FIFIA Ultimate Team video game he’s not included. In that game that sells millions Globally they have players rated as icons. None of the 1967 Celtic team are included nor indeed the Rangers team who won the European cup winners cup either. As a Rangers fan I can say we were all proud of Jimmy and tbh Celtic too as we are all Scottish and the same culturally identity. If your a true football fan then blue or green should make no difference in your admiration of a great player RIP Jinkie

@@HarmsFootball No problem. Many times we had a kick about with him. With 20 weans trying to get the ball off him and Jimmy dribbling around us with all sorts of skill moves 😊. We even followed him up to Wood Dean football pitches more than half a mile away with him sort of being like a pied piper. Yes the Garrincha influence is there with the quick change in direction. I recall him doing step overs too but curiously he didn’t incorporate that in to his game

There was a documentary on stv a good while back about wee Jimmy and his background in viewpark. It tells of how his primary school headmaster could see a talent in him. It showed the parks that he used to practice his skills on - dribbling around milk bottles with big heavy boots on was another thing he did. His girlfriend ( later wife ) tells how he was non stop football practice. Just to think he was a small lad from a housing estate in Scotland.

As an English 9 year old growing up in Singapore ,who's idol was G. Banks , i never heard of Jimmy Johnson , untill the Gordon Highlander kids my school mates told me about him . I remember next day Sunday 10 am ( Time Difference ) . Jocks & English at my friends Jock house , a cheer went up everytime J.J. touch the ball .
He was a magnificent player and a joy to watch.

Dubin the ball and our boots let in water as no plastic cover so dubbin was rubbed into the ball to keep the water out .. but it lasted for 20 mins then became water sodden and heavy. the balls were called case balls and had laces to cover the inflater thing.. I am talking 1062 Cos I was the one who used to dubbin the balls ready for games, which got you out of a lesson.. by 1971 the balls were much more advanced but still heavier than today's balls
1962 I mean not 1062 The Saxons were not big on football

I feel for Jimmy here. He was accustomed to playing with like Lennox, Murdoch, Connolly and Hay every week. Half of this team are nowhere near that level.
Remember JJ well ! I was only about 8 , but even then-in England!-you just knew there was something special about anyone who played for Jock Stein's Celtic, JJ was one of the select few World class Scots who never came to an English club. Great player.

I'm only going to comment on what I've seen here but it's lovely to see a player play like he was in the school playground as one of the better kids. Held on to the ball too long as time and gave the ball away a lot but ran around giving so much. England looked to foul him as the only way to stop him.he had very close control which is difficult to defend against!
Planning advice, thats so true. And george best played the same way except best was a better player. Jimmy didnt have a good game against england that i know off. Best did and scored great goals against england but the rest of his team didnt.
Can go both ways. Rare to see today. It's such an advantage.
He put a shift in for this game and had amazing skill. He could beat anyone but as these clips show, he ultimately mostly lost the ball.

Don't ask the Celtic fans how good Jimmy was, ask the Rangers fans. Along with people like Wilson, Henderson and Willie Johnston of Rangers, Hughes, Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone of Celtic, we had a load of great wingers.
As a scottish man myself we did have some great players but couldn't do it at big tournaments one day I hope things change. Our current squad under Steve Clarke still need a jimmy johnstone and a Kenny Dalglish but also I feel we need a world class central defender or two cos we concede goals at the top level you have to be rock solid. I don't know if we will get past Ukraine if we do then it will be tougher against Wales.

Apart from a few nice moments in the first half. He mostly lost the ball, running into brick walls.
On a side note: the ball moved like a brick back then. Modern balls move so swiftly with just a tap. Makes for faster moving games.
Agree. Very ineffective in this game. England's defence was far too good for Scotland.
Yeah, it's far from his best performance - although there are some mitigating circumstances to be fair. He was targeted by English defenders in the first time, they kept kicking him without any mercy, hence his second time performance being not as effective. And Scotland was just horrendous tactically. I've included a couple of episodes from the second time where Johnstone kept making good runs but his teammates either ignored them or failed to pass the ball to him accurately. In the last 30 minutes Scotland reserved to kicking the ball forward in Johnstone's general direction - nice move, considering that he's 1,62m tall and there's Bobby fecking Moore leading England's defense!
Check him versus England Hampden 1974 before World Cup! Different class in that game!

Jim Baxter playing keepy-uppy against the then World Champions team in 1967 is another great moment in football history...
Baxter was magnificent in that game! Such a shame that there’s so little footage of him, especially from before the leg break.
@@HarmsFootball Agreed. I know fans who say that by 1967, Baxter was already well into decline. I'd love to see a video of early 60's Baxter, and see just how good he was. I used to know Rangers fans who revered him. There is just enough of Jimmy Johnstone, and thankfully more of Davie Cooper to know how good they were, but alas, not Baxter. Thanks for the upload
@@HarmsFootball tbh he was ok, but he was better in the 63 game where he scored 2 goals. Bremner & Law were superb in the 67 game. Baxter was at Sunderland & drinking too much etc etc by that point. A shame .. & it was after his leg break
If Jim Baxter or Jimmy Johnston were english there would be programs and tributes all over engerlandshire but because These true icons of football were Scottish they are swept under the carpet.

One of the most underrated players ever. How anyone can forget what he did to Madrid… The Madrid fans were screaming ‘ole’ and clapped him off the pitch! Years before the Madrista’s did it to Ronaldinho. He’s up with there with Best and co. Legend.

Beautiful footwork. Very similar in style to Garrincha. He often shows the defender the ball and at the right moment takes it away from him. Another similar trait is he throws a defender by letting the ball run across his body without touching it.

Ah, British football in the '70s! No players diving, lots of hard tackles, and referees who understood that physical contact was part of the game.
Plenty of careers ruined following those tackles, mud covered pitches where the ball hardly moved, violence and racism on the terraces, unsafe stadiums, yeah, the 'good' old days, not.
And players looking to get the ball forward rather than endless sideways and backwards passing. So many great Scotland players in the sixties and seventies.
If this is a highlight reel of a celebrated baller then also very few completed passes.
And defendeders with nicknames like Chopper Harris or Norman 'bite your legs' Hunter.
When football shirts weren't advertising hoardings.

Eddie Gray was up there with the best during that era only injuries preventing him being as good as George Best.

Back in the 70's they used large strange orange looking balls. It was bad for players heading that massive heavy ball. I'm glad the technology has improved these days to have better lighter more aerodynamic balls.

Jinky had a wee stanley Mathews comic detailing ribbling moves.he studied it till it fell apart then put the moves into action time and time again.

Jinky was legendary etc but his light was starting to fade here.
70/71 was a season where he'd excelled at club level.
After that he steadily declined and was in the American soccer league four years later.
Alcohol problems then Motor neurone disease meant he died just 61 yrs old.
Imagine if he was playing on modern pitches with a modern ball😱

A fine wee player from a time when Scottish football meant something on worldwide basis. That said, the only real moment from this clip is at about 2.30, where he twists Terry Cooper’s blood and even makes Sir Bobby get his shorts dirty! An achievement in itself.
Richard diver, that was true. Terry cooper must have hated wee jinky by this time. Sure in 1970 at hampden in the european cup semi-final wee jinky gave terry cooper a right roasting all night, its one if not the best i have seen a winger ever make a left back look so bad as if cooper had never played football before. I can clearly remember cooper trying to kick jinky or make a tackle and cooper completely missesd the player altogether never mind the ball and kicked fresh air and spin around and fell, wich i did too when i was age 9. And when cooper did it we were all howling with laughter it was just so funny. Then jinky went past cooper and lorimer as he cut inside and made cooper and lorimer run into each other hard. But they had to play on they were getting slaughterd out there as it was. Bremners goal was a peach. And so was that very low header by bobby murdoch, that was a great header that one. 139,456 thousand were there that night, and the rest!
Two Great teams during that era coming face to face Shame it wasn't the final.
Is this a wind-up? Every time he got the ball in this video, he gave it away. He was a great player, but you wouldn't think so by looking at this.
