from Mexico I'm great fan of the National Scottish football team... I don't know why... But I enjoyed see the matches between Scotland vs England... Are so passion and also good football.. Saludos desde México 🇲🇽 👏
Great to see Scotland lift some silverware. Richard Gough was one of Britain’s all time great defenders at both right back and centre half. Few could match his class, consistency and will to win.
I am not Scottish. I am English, but I understand the passion of this fixture. The Hampden roar had an atmosphere all of it's own. Back then Hampden had a capacity well in excess of 100,000. I believe now it has a lower capacity? If only the FA and the SFA used this fixture as a pipe opener to their domestic seasons? For example, hold it Hampden one year, then alternate it to Wembley the following year?
I remember being at this game with my younger brothers. We had tickets for the schoolboys enclosure, but managed to get into the terracing right at the tunnel. The ‘official’ attendance was 90,000+ but, as is tradition, at least another 15 to 20,000 got in without a ticket by slipping the corrupt turnstile workers a tenner. Good goal, good game, good result, goodnight!
I'm afraid the Hampden capacity was a actually pegged at 74.000 by this time. I was at this game and it wasn't full. You must be thinking of another game.
The official attendance was 66,439. It was a poor attendance, even allowing for the usual discrepancies. I don't know anyone who gave any turnstile guy £10 in 1985 !!!!
England could pick their 3rd choice for every position and still be as good as Scotland on paper but we have done well against England for a nation of only 5 million, England have actually under achieved in the past 20 years considering the players they have.
For sure , but the gap's clearly wider between to the 2 national sides now. For example , most current England players are Champions league regulars playing for some of Europe's top clubs . No longer the case for Scotland , far from it unfortunately.
It’s because England have mostly played as a bunch of individuals and not as a team! Too many egotistical undisciplined players have cost them games against technically weaker sides.

this was the first scotland v england game i ever watched. and it was all about to go pear shaped after the heysel disaster and half of this england team ended up playing for rangers during the european ban. i also had the scotland replica kits both home and away.
The Heysel tragedy happened only four days after this game was played. The 1985 Scotland v England game was originally meant to be at Wembley but was moved to Hampden as the authorities in London were worried about the chances of crowd trouble during what was a bank holiday weekend. There were several serious incidents of hooliganism at matches in England during the early months of 1985 which culminated in the Heysel riot.
Im Scottish though and i was only 11 years old back then, but i do remember a lot of things about that day it was the first big football game i had really been to i had been to the Scotland v Wales game earlier that year but this was massive compared to that game, and the England fans did know they were going in the Scotland end but they all wanted out after the trouble broke out.
As an Aberdeen supporter this brings memories back. This match was won on the back of Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen victorious 5 years when they won 4 leagues, 3 Scottish Cups the League Cup and the European Cup final against Real Madrid 2-1. The Scottish players in this game against England? Here goes. Alex McLeish (No 5) Willie Miller (No 6) Jim Leighton in goal. That was the foundation and should never be under estimated and the reason for Aberdeen's successes. Add Gordon Strachan ex Aberdeen with Man Utd and Jim Bett ex Aberdeen with Lokeren stalwarts for an Aberdeen side. All thanks to Alex Ferguson and also to Jock Stein Scotland's manager at the time. The Aberdeen and Celtic influence was significant. Dundee Utd's Malpas and Gough were huge as well. And Aberdeen and Dundee Utd were actually called The New Firm. Alas it didn't last long. Money men took over in Glasgow and Celtic and Rangers have dominated ever since.
I boarded a coach at midnight on the Friday at Southampton and arrived in Glasgow at 10am after stopping at Carlisle Services. Big Saints Union Jack flag on display at the back of the coach and received dog's abuse from Jocks. Fair to say it was a character building trip apart from the prematch drink in the Rangers Social Club who treated us amazingly well. I had a seat in the main stand and met Lou Macari who was sat near me. My mate a terrace ticket behind the goal and had the smelly brown stuff kicked out of him all of the match !
Loved watching this and all the '80s legends. And these were the guys who managed to make the team for their respective countries. There were great players who struggled to get near the squads.
