Hard to believe that by 1983, we were both tied for number of wins each! a population difference in the tens of millions. Yet we matched England, blow for blow, for over a century:) miss these games being an annual thing. Only made it to Wembley once, but you could never forget the experience.
Back them we only got short highlights of English league game sup here, but from what I saw of him Chivers looked a cracking player, big, strong, skilful, and had some shot on him.
For me the contrast with current games is the way players have to be knocked down and don't go looking for it. Watching this is a refreshing change from the gamesmanship which has gradually infected our football so that you can barely watch a game without feeling that players now cheat as a matter of course. I think young people should watch this and see how the game should look - unfortunately it is irretrievable.
jokergame Referees should be ordered from the very top to just play on, and the dugout should just run forward with a stretcher after a couple of minutes. See if the poor injured soul is still on his back if all he gets out his performance is taken off the pitch.
The England line up for this 1971Home Championship with Scotland at Wembley was as usual typical of Sir Alf Ramsey. Ramsey fielded no less than five of his 1966 World Cup winners won 3-1 with Martin Chivers scoring a brace.
@David Broadley Not so. The Welsh FA deliberately picked Anfield as they would receive more gate money than if the game had been played in Cardiff. Sad but true. Also Welsh fans had kicked off against Yugoslavia a year earlier so Ninian Park was already excluded as a venue.
Martin Chivers looked as good as Harry Kane does today sharp assured and deadly with most shots at least on target.I remember watching the game on TV and at the time thinking Scotland were disappointing but fair play to England score was about right as Bobby Clarke would definitely have saved the penalty that never was.
I used to go 2 a lot of matches @ WHL back in those days as well. U r right that Chivers had a shot like a thunderbolt & he always seemed to know where the goal was as well.
Only time was at Wembley , travelling down from Stirling on a special overnight train. Cannot remember seeing highlights before. Strange seeing Peter Cormack on the week of his death.
Because from the 32 countries trying to qualify from Europe, there were nine groups, made up of five with four teams in them and four with three teams and England were in one of the three team groups. They only lost one of their four games, the same as the group winners but with fewer games, there was less wiggle room to recover from any setbacks. Other group winners in four team groups also lost a single game but were still able to recover with more games played overall.
Love the football of yesteryear. Peter Cormack was a very stylish player as I remember, he played for Nottingham Forest then Liverpool. Hugh Curran I think was Wolves.

The interesting thing about it, looking back today, is how little the predominately right-wing (and, certainly by the late 1970s, already Murdochised) England fans cared about the Scots, rarely even bothering to attend the match at Wembley and treating it with bored disdain. With the general anti-Scottish feeling that has become part of the "Engerland" mentality in recent years - and which really wasn't there pre-1997 - there might be more edge *on both sides* if the fixture was revived now.
As your comment was made 11 years you may well have died or emigrated to Australia by now, but all the same, what a load of bollocks. Thatcher did not become PM until 1979 up until which we had predominantly Labour Governments through the 1970s. As I recall, the main reason for England fans staying away was the hoards of Scots that used to travel and cause a bucket load of trouble. As for the "Engerland" mentality I doubt very much there was any anti-Scottish sentiment in the 1970s in contrast to the attitude of the Scots who seemed to care more about beating England than qualifying for a world cup. Who can forget the "Remember Bannockburn" banners the Scots brought to Wembley. Nor the time they invaded the pitch and wrecked the goalposts. Anti-Scottish sentiment has only really grown since devolution. Scottish nationalism is built on anti-English bigotry and the eternal whingeing of the "indulged child" that is Scotland has eaten away at the English who still to this day subsidise the Scots despite their conspiracy theories to the contrary. I have known a lot of Scots and to a man they cannot handle their ale, are up for a fight after a pint and a half, and talk complete and utter shite.
8.09 and Bobby Moore stuff ups = this is one reason England failed to progress past Germany in the EC 72 and Poland in the WC qualifying final (see his goof in away leg highlights). Bobby did something similar in the box against Germany in the 1st QF leg. Then against Poland he tries to take on a Polish attacker in a one vs one situation in defence and lost it. The legs went, Alf couldnt shake off his puppy dog loyalty to the man and replace him as he should have in 71.
He was also at fault for West Germany's winner in the WC 1/4 final in 70 for which Bonetti got most of the blame. I think you have the time on this video wrong though. Excellent as he was for years, I think in selective public memory he's become slightly overrated. Whereas Scirea of Italy tends to be underrated while Zoff gets greater credit.

Reason England pulled out the HIs in the 80s was because after about 110 years, they finally managed to level the scores. As a wee boy in the 70s, my Dad told me we'd beat England more times than they'd beaten us. We always raise our game against you guys. Don't kid yourself.
Chivers was right up there as a centre forward but for me there was no better striker than Allan Clarke those two should've play many games together for England.
The British players always started off with blistering pace but could only keep this up in the first half. Against the continentals they most of the time were outplayed against far better technical skills
Just look at the line up for both teams. And throw in Wales and N Ireland. All 4 x teams = UK. Imagine how powerful a UK team of the 60's, 70's and 80's would have been. But toss it all away and play as states. No wonder the French and German masters controlling FIFA and UEFA were happy they play as individual states not representing their central government as the other 199 members of FIFA and 56 members of UEFA do.
Well it was as separate states that they started football internationals, wasn't it? But imagine 80 teams with Hansen, Souness, Dalglish and Rush (maybe Southall ahead of Shilton too) along with the best England players. Or in 68 and 70, Best and Law with Charlton. In the 70s Scotland qualified for world cups where England failed but a UK team could have gone a long way. Scotland had a conveyor belt of fine players in the 60s and 70s: McKay, Baxter, Johnstone, Bremner, Gray.... In 1958 all 4 home nations were among the 16 teams in the world cup. John Charles, Cliff Jones, Ivor Allchurch, Danny Blanchflower..and a great tragedy with Duncan Edwards and others dying young. More recently, left footers Giggs and Bale would have filled gaps in England's line-ups, for sure.
mizofan Doesnt matter what you started as since when they started in the 1880's there wasnt any World Cup or EC. So in a grown up nation with the choice of either a) winning squat all alone or b) sharing in the spoils of victory....I know which I would prefer. Anyway if they too inbred to play as one as we do in the Olympics then so be it. I rather the current set up then having to negotiate with 3 other FA's that have such small minds\
Shy Guava Jennings, Mcgrain, Moore, Mcneil, Baxter, Best, Charlton, Law, Dalglish Souness, Giggs. What a team that would have been! and the subs bench would be something, with players like Johnstone, Greaves, Emilyn Hughes, Banks, Gasgoine, Waddle, Hansen, Mark Hughes...and many more great players.
Love to see the video of England's 2/0 Win in Scotland when Alf Ramsey ( who hated the Scots) told Alan Ball to behave and not wind-up 100,000 Jocks. Near the end Bally goes to the corner flag and, in play, sits on the ball ! lol As they came off Alf winked at Bally and said " Well Done Son !"....lol
In 1966,if we were hosts,I think we would have stood a chance as we had decent players then. Funny you mention Italy and Germany who have won so many European and World cups, unlike England with a similar population. Don't worry about it!
Nothing wrong with that its how to rattle them, nothing wrong with playing to our strengths. And our strength back then was being a lot more hard tackling, simply as we had quality defenders that we do not have now.We simply do not have that quality, guys such as Kennedy,McGrain,Jardine,Narey,Malpas,Miller,McLeish,Burley,McQueen,Nicol,McGovern,Hansen,Mackay
The population of England versus the population of Scotland and England playing at home. 3-1 is not such a bad result for Scotland then. The best British player ever, Jimmy Johnstone, made Scotland's goal.
The Villa Aston Watch Real Madrid V Celtic in 67, after Celtic had won the European Cup...he tore Madrid to pieces that night, they ended up chanting his name, it was a masterclass...he is arguably the best, right up there with George Best, no doubt about it.
1'30..So many times watching these clips of England games from 1970 on have I seen Moore mess up..He seems to think he can beat any player in any situation..Had he lost it? Watch the W Germany '72 game and you'll see it again and again..And don't mention Poland in '73...
The first goal of the match should have not been allowed. Instead, a penalty should have been given to England. I presume the referee thinks penalties are a boring waste of time. It was incorrect to allow a goal. The ball was not over the line. 1966 revisited - But a poor decision.
But supposing the penalty had been missed, then there would have been a clear injustice as the original shot was going in. So well done ref. - common sense decision, a quality lacking in most Scots a fucking bawbag of a useless, idle, pissed-up nation.
It must have been great being an England player back then. The ball didn't even have to cross the line for a goal to be awarded, as West Germany, and Scotland, found out to their cost.
....haha..lol..very witty, made me laugh. tbh, I think it was very sensible refereeing as the ball would clearly have gone into the net WITHOUT the hand stopping it. Shame they did not use a white ball; would have been clearer if they had. tbf also, all the detailed replays show that the ball did NOT conclusively cross the line in 1966. should not have been given; the lino was way short, he would have needed to have been right up to the corner flag quadrant to have been able to give a fully considered decision. yes the ref came over and spoke a few words but really the roar of the cheering crowd seemed to make the decision for them. tbh, these days international football bores me to tears these days; I prob. look over the top of a newspaper whenever England play or flick around the channels. yawn, yawn, yawn...been like it the past 20 years, does not inspire me at all. Bit like the afro-latino league, ie the premier league, clubs buying trophies, NO genuine competition, sorry to say.
Ok Call it 2-1 then And 3-2 against w Germany if those goals don't count Because the referees were biased as everyone loves the English and wants them to win right?
@@lennylaa1686 Another woeful attempt at a wind up. If you must try to wind folk up, it's best to make the winds up's at least verging on the believable. There doesn't appear to be much hope for you I'm afraid.
Very good...and England have never won a European tournament, despite their size. Accept your failure and get on with it! Get the chip off your shoulder...
If you're seriously trying to claim that ball might have crossed the line, because the camera's were in SD, then there's really no point in discussing anything with you, as you clearly have no interest in the truth. Next, you'll be claiming Geoff Hurst's second goal, of his one goal hat trick, crossed the line, because the film was in black and white! .
Come one mate. The ball isn't even close to the line, far less over it. The Scotland defender punches the ball, it hits the bar, and comes down a couple of feet outside the line. It would have been a clear penalty, I admit that, but there is absolutely no way that ball was anywhere near crossing the line.
@@TheCosmicFunker The ref has taken it upon himself to give the goal instead of the pen . Never seen that done before or since . In my book the ref was wrong .
It depends. Rangers fans are, on the whole, more to the political right than Celtic fans, though I don't want to go any further into *that* argument. But I do think that a lot of the anti-Scottishness that *does* exist in England is actually codified envy. After all, the English people who seem to be most anti-Scottish are also those who are most concerned about clear cultural identity, and *that* is something the Scots have much more of ...

Warlike, ignorant, masses who invade other countries, and steal from them. I suppose that would make English folk like...
This is worse than a colour blind game for me. I think it's red, but I can't see it when they dribble it. Why couldn't they use a white ball? Any matches with green and red jerseys are not much fun. And goalkeeper's kits are also a problem. Yellow and green are not such a contrast.
Is no up to any ref to decide you biased..... Its a penalty. And chivers he ended up in the non league when he lost gilzean.. ##englandexpectgoalsthatdontgoovertheline
Your talking pish ! Sure there was little interest in the home nations but the main reason was,and still is,there's actually no room in the calender for the games. As for Scots fans celebrations being to blame, frankly, that's laughable. If that were the case there wouldn't be an international competition played anywhere on the planet due to havoc England fans brought with them.
David Coleman implied that because it was going, all but for the clear hand ball, the referee could 'decide' to give it...apparently the ball having to cross the goal-line, which it clearly didn't, didn't come into consideration in 1971... Definite penalty, a booking in those days but a goal, not even a discussion. Not sure why Martin Peters was celebrating with such certainty...

Look at Cormack the Scot's 11. In his physique and way of moving the image of George Best. Nowhere near as good of course but remarkable similarity.
#7 4 England: Francis Lee, the "chunky raider"! (Maybe some of my fellow old-timers will get this reference.)
i think the kit they used then was just class
You Jocks,It's round and orange the ball that is.
I am not in the least concerned about Englands under achievement and failure compared to nations of a similar size.
Why did they use an old fashioned orange leather ball? Thought they did not use these in 1971.
...so right kev, ideal for snowy pitches but not here..unable to clearly see the action, should have used a white ball.
More recently, left footers Giggs and Bale would have filled gaps in England's line-ups, for sure.
mizofan
Doesnt matter what you started as since when they started in the 1880's there wasnt any World Cup or EC.
Aye,right, you of superior mind and intellect.
Where have all the sideburns gone?
Love to see the video of England's 2/0 Win in Scotland when Alf Ramsey ( who hated the Scots) told Alan Ball to behave and not wind-up 100,000 Jocks. Near the end Bally goes to the corner flag and, in play, sits on the ball ! lol
As they came off Alf winked at Bally and said " Well Done Son !"....lol
Jim Baxter beat England his self in 67 oh and he sat on the ball !
Then Baxter came to the English league and was useless.
...ha john clark...must have been '' a little bit of afters''!!! but had to wait 4 years to do it!! haha lol.
120.000 actually.
And our strength back then was being a lot more hard tackling, simply as we had quality defenders that we do not have now.We simply do not have that quality, guys such as Kennedy,McGrain,Jardine,Narey,Malpas,Miller,McLeish,Burley,McQueen,Nicol,McGovern,Hansen,Mackay
..allan evans, villa.
Jock Tamson Alan gilzean
Two good teams
A magnificent play by E
The population of England versus the population of Scotland and England playing at home. 3-1 is not such a bad result for Scotland then. The best British player ever, Jimmy Johnstone, made Scotland's goal.
The best British player ever, Jimmy Johnstone
ROTFL
The Villa Aston Watch Real Madrid V Celtic in 67, after Celtic had won the European Cup...he tore Madrid to pieces that night, they ended up chanting his name, it was a masterclass...he is arguably the best, right up there with George Best, no doubt about it.
MY IDOL IS FRANCIS LEE
+TIIKERI4883 RUBBISH VERA LYN WAS BETTER
Ah yes, Diver Lee.
Francis Lee the big roll King of the North West of England
England won but a poor Scotland team, their defense was a shamble.
We are superior 🏴🍺👊✌️
Scotland outclassed by vastly superior English players
how come there are hardly any scottish wins on here? someone has taken them off.
1'30..So many times watching these clips of England games from 1970 on have I seen Moore mess up..He seems to think he can beat any player in any situation..Had he lost it? Watch the W Germany '72 game and you'll see it again and again..And don't mention Poland in '73...
He gave the ball away for W.Germany's winner in 70 1/4 final too.
ghost goal from peters
That handball should be a red card.
Hate to think how we would fare against the English now!
How about 10 years later !
Poor wee Scotland. Beaten again.
The first goal of the match should have not been allowed. Instead, a penalty should have been given to England. I presume the referee thinks penalties are a boring waste of time. It was incorrect to allow a goal. The ball was not over the line. 1966 revisited - But a poor decision.
yea, the scots were robbed, as ever - just look at how few chances England made. LOL.
But supposing the penalty had been missed, then there would have been a clear
injustice as the original shot was going in.
So well done ref. - common sense decision, a quality lacking in most Scots
a fucking bawbag of a useless, idle, pissed-up nation.
First goal was not a goal it was a penalty.
Ok
Call it 2-1 then
And 3-2 against w Germany if those goals don't count
Because the referees were biased as everyone loves the English and wants them to win right?
The original shot was going in anyway - so get over it......but why wasn't the
cheat handler sent off - shocking.
@@lennylaa1686 Another woeful attempt at a wind up. If you must try to wind folk up, it's best to make the winds up's at least verging on the believable.
Going for a wind up where the only two options are it's a transparent attempt at a wind up, or you're so stupid you shouldn't be allowed access to a computer, is not the recipe for a decent wind up.
0/10. There doesn't appear to be much hope for you I'm afraid.
Very good...and England have never won a European tournament, despite their size.
Accept your failure and get on with it!
Get the chip off your shoulder...
Chiv, Chiv, Chiv, Chiv.
All legends, no prima donnas in those dsys
Strange one that . Ive never seen a ref give a goal instead of a pen.
But if that penalty had been missed, then that would have been unjust.
Goal it was, well done ref.
@@Lord_Hillcrest01 I'm guessing the reason for that is it's against football rules to just award a goal.
@@lennylaa1686 Poor attempt at a wind Greg. 2/10. Must do better.
After all, the English people who seem to be most anti-Scottish are also those who are most concerned about clear cultural identity, and *that* is something the Scots have much more of ...
complete with lace!
Didn’t think you could play a penalty on ??
The ball never crosses the line. How can it be a goal??
It’s a penalty.
How can you tell from these TV images?..
Alf Ramsey still be in charge of England and much fiat not the money like today
Gosh, Bobby More makes a mistake.
Sorry it's my fuckin mistake
Funny orange/brown ball was used. Not very visible. So I stopped watching.
salimtufail MM.
@pix046 The way that you are I am so sorry that your life is so filled with hate. I am a Scot who looked up old home nations matches then read what people thought of the game then read the bile from your fingertips.
Ah! the mighty All Blacks.....now rugby...there's a REA L game!
chivers regal
Who wears short shorts?!
The answer to that one is: pretty much everyone, I guess.
If you watch 1970s footage from the NBA, they wore shorts very much in the same fashion.
@amaffmaheid scotland, surely in the same class as Finland, wales and Estonia..small nation..small minded people..ignored by most people..as an independant nation scotland would be the moldovia of north west europe...constantly looking for handouts from england, germany and france..
Phil shut up you twat at least Scotland qualified for 3 success World Cup .What about England oh I forgot they weren't heard of for 12 yrs
So Scotland are ignored by most people around the world? I would rather that than be hated by everyone around the world, like the English.
England would be the Mongolia of the world. Warlike, ignorant, masses who invade other countries, and steal from them. I suppose that would make English folk like...
🇬🇧🔚🏴
How was the first goal a goal??? Ffs!
