Scotland 2-1 England (1976)

- Scotland recover from being thrashed 5-1 at Wembley a year earlier by deservedly beating rivals England 2-1 in the Home International Championship at Hampden Park in May 1976. Mick Channon gives England an early lead but Don Masson heads Scotland level and Kenny Dalglish grabs the winner as his shot squirms between Ray Clemence's legs.

I could watch all these old Home Internationals all day. I know we’ll never see the like again with the packed International schedule nowadays, but what a memory from my youth.
Coleman's commentary in this and other big matches are legendary
Rest in peace Tam Forsyth, what a tackle on Channon that was.
That was a decent Scotland team against a very decent England team, some superb players amongst that, and they all played with pride, happy days
Back then to qualify for a World Cup or any major tournament, you had to finish top of your qualifying group or *that was it!* When international football really was at its peak.
Joe Jordon was a fantastic centre forward from the old school. Tough as old boots..
*What a player and what an era for all international football as a whole.*
I don’t know what Kenny Dalglish had to do to get a penalty in this or the game at Wembley in ‘77. He was cleaned out in both games.
Scottish. Respect to Mick Channon. Check the guy's scoring records from '66 -'82.
Even at 26, Danny McGrain looked 59.
... and his play was sublime
What a first touch by Dalglish for his goal. You have to wonder whether Clemence's mistake was partly down to not having recovered from the knock he had just taken. Loved the football from this era.
We'll never know about that - probably not, I would think - but Clemence himself said a few years later that this was "my worst ever mistake".
2 classic football strips on display here. England's 1st Admiral kit and Scotland's Umbro Diamonds. So much cooler and classier than the modern bland Nike shite that teams wear nowadays, where you can tell that the designer has spent all of 5 minutes creating it.
Yes...how many teams stick to their proper kits now, Scotland in Pink and how embarrassing for Scottish fans!!
Scotland had a pink and yellow strip in the early 1900s
Modern kit designers are all poofters so no wonder.
@@norbertholstein2604 Correct, The Lord Roseberry Racing Colours. Hearts and Puma recreated a few seasons back for their away kit.
@@mjh5437 I'm not interested in their sexual preferences, just wish they would design better Football kits tbh 🤣🤣
RIP Tam Forsyth...tackle!!
Big Joe Jordan was a defenders nightmare. Great player.
Rumour has it that there is a video in youtube with Alan Rough's greatest saves. Apparently, it lasts 7 seconds....still looking for it!
There's more than that.. He makes a world class save at 9 past haffey.
the 2 great saves he didn’t make from cubillas are in it
When football was football ⚽️
Not soccer
Yes soccer was more interesting in the 70s.
One of the best games between the two countries, Scotland were superb.
Auld Hampden in all its magnificent glory.
@jwgeezer ....shhh silly boy.
@Joy Division Naw, we dinnae
I was there !...
I was an 11 year old lad high up behind the goals where King Kenny put the ball through Ray Clemence's legs
johnnyM809 Kenny controlled it beautifully and stuck it away with aplomb.
Need these games back.
At least every couple of years.
My very first proper game, my dad’s friend was on security and got my mum,dad and myself in the old wooden stand opposite the main stand . I was 11.
Used to love the home internationals.
I was in the Rangers end at this game, had a great view of Dalglish putting the ball through Clemence's legs for the winner. Then the clouds of dust coming up as the fans celebrated.
Coleman’s commentary was superb. People thought he was biased back then but listen to his commentary at the 74/78 World Cups. Totally behind Scotland as the only home nation to compete.
5:37
The greatest goal in the history of professional football.
"Nice one, Kenny! Nice one, son!"
Danny McGrain can do whatever he wants. Another Scot that in todays market would be worth 10s of millions if not more Class all the way
I agree best scotland full back I ever seen
All the way 🏴
Different game now. Danny McGrain would be left puffing in the wake of today's superfit kids.
Danny McGrain was generally seen as one of the best in the World playing in his position! And unfortunately there's something in the Grub or water these dayz& young men no longer look like men, where as Danny Mc most certainly did!
I like the way David Coleman said 'Yes!' when Mick Channon scored.
tiny bit biased wasn't he :)
well he is English... but he was good at what he didi...... Clyde Tyldesley and all the other new boys are a disgrace in their 'jingo-ism'
@@laptopsorted because English commentators aren’t allowed to be biased eh?
To be fair, he said it the same way when Joe Jordan scored the first in 1974.
my grandad and dad always used to tell me about this type of football, when he said football was at its peak for scotland, as my grandad came to over 45+ matches for scotland, some he may have snuck in but he said it was all worth it to see dalglish. wish i was alive during this time
Danny getting a nosebleed in front of goal as usual. The only weak part of his game. Clemence was.a.fantastic keeper, Tom Forsyth with a game saving tackle. RIP to them both.
Two really good teams, dramatic game, eloquent commentary .. oh, what has Sky done to our football?
Oh, what has Rupert Murdoch done to our country?
mizofan Indeed, indeed ...
Along money...spoiled it!!
Commentary totally biased in favour of England. Who shouts yes when a team scores.
The years when football was football and not all about money,I was 15 when this was played, how good was the home internationals.
Great to see proper unbiased commentary
Great tackle Tam. You gave me lots of great memories as I watched my team lift trophy after trophy and pride watching you perform so well for Scotland. R.I.P.
Jaws
Grabbing the winner in 1973. RIP Jaws.
Coleman was the master, I remember watching these games, with excitement, when he did these ,matches in the 70s,and his one- nil, brilliant commentary, on all sports he did
Yes, Colman's deep voice and sparse commentary added weight and gravitas to important games, replaced by the awful Motty with non stop chattering and high pitched wailing, which most commentators copy today.
David Coleman is another great loss to BBC's sport commentary, along with Harry Carpenter, Bill McLaren, Richie Benaud, Dan Maskell, Len Martin, Ted Lowe and so many others. The 70s, 80s and early 90s really were the great days of BBC Sport. They are no one like them now. Only Murray Walker, John Motson and Tim Gudgin are left, it seems. It's a shame Coleman never got the send-off he deserved, truly was the master voice. I miss him so.
I remember Coleman say, "One nil" in one game - but it was actually an equaliser by England!
David Coleman One of the best commentators ever .
RIP big Tam.
My goodness...Scotland had some wonderful players in this era. Genuinely, could've won the World Cup in 78...had things been managed better.
They certainly did. Brilliant header by channon though. And what was clemence doing, chucking that shot in from dalglish. Shocking goalkeeping.
Wouldn't have won in Argentina even with Brian Clough.
ROTFL
Great footage my 1st ScotlandvEngland, went on my own from 30 miles away, in the crowd right across from Kenny when he scored. Never realised the Kenny/Clemence incidents/needle/penalty! The Kings' nutmeg paid him in spades for years I remember:-))
Thank you for the upload.
From a Celtic man. RIP Tam Forsyth. A great servant to Rangers. He broke my heart with his 'lucky' tap-in in 1973. Ha. God rest him.
Aye, RIP to the big man. That goal in '73 - it wasn't even a tap in, his boot skimmed over the top of it and it barely crossed the line.
The ball was much heavier then , not like the light weight balloons they use now. By the way, Kenny Dalglish was still a Celtic player here.
ThefightingCelt They sold him a year later. 440,000 pounds, I think. After the Final against Rangers.
Yes , a club record at the time - and I and many others were gutted when he left Celtic. I attended the final against Rangers , in which Kenny captained the winning side. Rained most of the day , as I recall.
ThefightingCelt Yup. It rained alright. Played with toy soldiers at the top of the stairs with the boy across the street. Dad watched it downstairs. Shouted at us weans. We were noisy.
Remember May of '77 very well. I was 9 haha. Was it Stein's last game?
Dalglish became world class at Liverpool .My fav player of all time and am a bluenose but hey you must respect class.
@@Kelly14UK Yep you are right; but Liverpool had sold Keegan for £500,000 just before so Liverpool had made a profit in buying Dalglish!
GREAT ATMOSPHERE ON ALL ENGLAND SCOTLAND GAMES 60S 70S AND LATER !! BETTER THAN I REMEMBER
Bloody hell a home international with 4 Derby players, up the RAMS 🐏 ⚽️👍
Ray Clements was a world class goal keeper, sadly he made a bad mistake.
At last a sensible response to the question of Clemence's ability. Like Shilton, Clemence was a brilliant keeper who made one bad mistake (as did Shilton for England in '73 vs Poland).
Agree completely.
Good and authentic football. Scotland better than other plays over all in deeply forward. Thanks.
That was a lucky goal, but Kenny Dalglish was magnificent a real legend, and would of been worth absolutely millions at today's prices
He would have been priceless.
For whatever reason he didn't really shine for Scotland in his long National career despite being surrounded by great quality players. The Lawman's record was outstanding for Scotland, scoring the same number of goals in half the number of games as Dalglish 👍
@@KryptonitetoallBS John Motson made this point in a short interview with Dalglish many years back. "You consistently play very well for your club [Liverpool], but you don't always turn it on for your country. Now why is this?" Dalglish: "Well, the manager keeps selecting me, so I can't be playing that badly for Scotland".
@@SMSJSC Typical Dalglish, never answering the question but always trying to be clever. Strachan was similar during a bad spell as Celtic Manager. Eventually he lost the fans as they grew frustrated with his defensive wise cracks!
miss these kind of games
Going by today's prices, there is about £1.5 billion worth of talent on display there. Today's primadonnas wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes on that pitch.
Ray Clemence giving a passable imitation of a Scottish goalie that day. And against Dalglish, too! I'll bet he got some stick for that in the Liverpool dressing room.
Dalglish wouldn't be in that Liverpool dressing room until 12 months later
That Clemence let in was still being spoken about at my school 3-4 years later.
Tackle of the match by 'Jaws' at 7:50 .....
At certain points there's a dramatic expressiveness to some of the players, Stuart Pearson at 3.46 when he knocks Rough and nods as if to say 'Yes, yes, I accept my behaviour there was ungentlemanly' and Kenny Dalglish at 5.12 after he hit Clemence as if to say 'Whit did ah dae?'
I was in the Rangers stand that day, great memories thanks👍👍
Clements conceded an almost identical goal to that second one four years later v Wales.
Great stuff, soccer when it had style and passion. Amen.
Pure nostalgia

Great memories. After the match we were walking back to the railway station for our train north to Aberdeen and an SFA bus came slowly through our ranks. Being tall I spotted a spiky haired individual poking his head up over the back seats and looking back at us ....it was Rod Stewart! It only took a few seconds before us fans were singing "Sailing" with Mr Stewart "conducting" us from the bus. What a way to end a fantastic day. :)
when football was played by men, in the proper way. Great players trying to score a goal , now a day they are more scared of losing. Great exciting players, and a proper football commentator, David Coleman. Footballers today , are overpaid spoilt bastards , who dive all over the pitch, and only care about one thing, money.
Exactly the sort of thing being said in 1976. You reach a certain age, and rose tinted nostalgia takes over.
A jambo knows
Just being a Hearts fan makes you all wise?
yes lol
ANDI FISHER I missed out there, then :)
Kicked up and down the place, wee bit of the magic sponge and back at it.When players were actually Football players.
The one of the best referee from that era conducted this match, the Hungarian Károly Palotai.
Still, that was a penalty
Yes. He refereed the following year at Wembley too. A superb referee.
@szabolcspuszla1963
Maybe, but he still missed a stonewall penalty.
God bless David Coleman!
I was there as a 15 year old in the old North stand above the terraces. What was the crown? Officially it must have been 115,000, but the Hampden park gatekeepers h would let anyone in for a note! At least another 10.000. Great atmosphere just from fans and never to be repeated sadly
85.000. the capacity had been cut by this time.
@@georgegreig8054 Hampden went through too many capacity reductions, despite no changes to the ground. In 1970, only 6 years before this game, the Scotland-England game attracted 137,000. How they could cut it by 50,000 in only 6 years I'll never know.
@@SMSJSC The wooden sleepers had started to rot and completely disapear in some areas of the terracing. 70 per cent of the crush barriers were unsafe as well. Thy started reducing the capacity no long after Ibrox in 1971.
If football was like this, I'd go miles to watch. I don't like the game today - players with red, yellow, green, white shoes, jerseys tucked out, tattoos, strange haircuts...I don't like the style of play either. Today's football does not turn me on at all. But there was a time when football was pristine and there was glory.
Tram Hill second that sentiment. When did it become tasteful that players can wear these multicolored fairy slippers? Or the balls are likewise. Or for that matter, not play in the pissing rain or deep mudbath? I dont get it.
Tram Hill You're worried about the color of their shoes? Who cares?
Exactly the sort of thing being said in 1976. You reach a certain age, and rose tinted nostalgia takes over.
RIP Tom.
It's not gone too well since that win has it boys.
True, but the best was yet to come... Wembley '77
Those Scots in the 60s, 70s, 80s had great world class players beating England was normal and expected how England has gone backwards since we won WC at home in 1966, then the first team to be us was guess who? Yes Scotland 😭
Me encantan estos duelos de esa epoca...que ganas de pasear por el reino Unido en esos años ☹️
David Coleman is better than any of today's commentators. Just called the game no rubbish!
Alan Rough had an out of body experience and took over Ray Clemence for a few minutes...
"Poor Ray Clemence.."😅😅 bet King Kenny never let him forget that one😂
Stonewall penalty. Clemence brought Daglish down
Both teams had great players in their ranks then and were quite evenly matched. Despite his mistake allowing Dalgliesh's shot between his legs Ray Clemence was a superb goalkeeper and in this respect England were far superior as Alan Rough was at best 'very average'
In my opinion Rough got far too many caps. There were other, better keepers for Scotland, such as Bobby Clark. We couldn't match England for 'keepers, but Rough was chosen far too often for my liking.
@@SMSJSC I wonder why David Harvey of Leeds got left out so soon after playing well at the 74 World Cup. I just looked up his international record and he only conceded 8 goals in his 16 games.
@@robertmac9057 Good point! I'd fortgotten about DH. Just reinforces my opinion of Alan Rough.

Rough’s feet nailed to the ground as usual.
Check out Eder in 1982 4 - 1 game ! His beautiful chip / lob over
Rough . He was glued to the spot .
He turned round just in time to see the ball go in the net. Brilliance !
P S. Alan was actually a really nice , modest guy 👍
the second goal reminded me the blooper of Robert Green when US goal tied against England, seems like English goalkeepers are kind of distracted when England is having the game under control.
Scotland was clearly better, but what a bizarre way to get a winning goal. Bad defense, bad shot, and the goalkeeping... unspeakable!
Dalglish and Clemence. Never spoke to each other after. Five years of silence at Liverpool.
I was there up the rangers end
Magic atmosphere
rangers "ha ha" end!!
David Coleman as unbiased ever *rolls eyes*
Yeah. Scottish commentators were ALWAYS impartial of course !
( and I'm Scottish ! ).
How much would Mick Channon or Joe Jordan be worth in today's market? Amazing.
Best Scottish team.
Every time Scotland plays England at Hampton Park ( every 2 years) there are always nice sunny day.
Scotland had a brilliant side back then. Certainly better than England's. They remained decent until at least the millennium and normally qualified for tournaments. They produced players like Souness, Law, Dalglish, McCoist, Strachan, McAllister, Gemmill, Hutchinson etc, the list goes on. Why are those Scottish players now?
Both England and Scotland suffer the same problem with blazers who are behind the times and not enough good coaching and skill put into their national teams. Both countries need a shake-up in youth development from top to bottom. I know that we have so many foreign players in the Premier League where British players, especially Scottish ones, used to dominate but blame must also be put at the SFA's door, along with the FA down in England. We both need the types of organisation they have in Germany with ex-players on top on the football associations.
maybe cos kids these days playing xbox rather than footy
You're partly right, I think. I believe though that today's top clubs are mostly to blame... they want instant success, and pay for massively expensive foreign imports rather than giving young British talent a chance. That's the crux of the problem.
Wasn’t this at the time England were alternating their goal keepers between Ray Clemence and the best goalkeeper in the world Peter Shilton?
Yes but Shilton was also prone to the odd gaffe, eg Domarksi's goal for Poland in 1973 when he dived over the ball.
Point taken.
However, Shilton was good as a teenager that Leicester could sell Gordon Banks to Stoke City.
David Coleman was the best commentator ever
Tom Forsyth tackle -awesome!
Is this Gerry Sinstadt commentating? I think so. RIP Gerald - one of the greats of post-war footie commentating.
no its David Coleman on the BBC
God Bless Kenny. Fantastic Day.
Is the commentary a tad biased?
Brilliant performance from Danny McGrain!
you are right
Sandy Jardine was injured so Danny played right back otherwise he would have been on the left. McGrains weakness was he never scored a lot of goals and had a good chance in that game to notch one. Jardine/McGrain were the best combo full backs in the world when at their peak.
Best ever British right back
Unfortunately, he always got a nosebleed when he got to the opposition penalty box.
@@mizofan His crossing was shocking mind. I don't know whats going on with him health wise. I know he doesn't have any people skills. A great pal of mine as a child once saw him @ Celtic and said how he thought he was a magnificent player. Danny's reply in an aggressive tone was " Aye you'd better believe it son". He left a 7 yr old in tears that day!!

“....and Clemence’s day is now complete ... a complete disaster!”
when england scored david colman said yes
he had a habit of saying that irrespective of the tams tbh
5:53 To think Clemence later became England's goalkeeping coach. 🙄😒
Ray Clemense era uma piada ! Kkkkll
Not sure what Don was thinking. That England midfield bound to be outnumbered.
Shame is that clemence was a great keeper but whenever I think of him that 2nd goal springs to mind
Trevor Graham never knew what to expect from him one minute making fantastic saves the next fk ups like that, Shilton was way better
marrbill Yes at least four fuck-ups in 15 years of top football. You are right in that overall I think Shilton was the better keeper. However, I think Tommy Smith got it right when he said that in the early 70s when Shilton was always picked, Clemence was leagues ahead. After the mid 70s, I thought Shilton was the better keeper and at times looked almost unbeatable
Isn't it curious how one mistake or one bad game is what people tend to remember most. Think of Peter Bonetti too.
@@marrbill Complete nonsence. Clemence had far more natural talent, agility and command of his area. Would have saved the Maradona goal. Dreadful mistake to favour Shilton over him.
@@desplatt842 yes I agree 100% 👍
When Channon scores where was the England fans making the “roar”?
they were always outnumbered
Mind of Dalglish 🥜 meggng the keeper 🤣😘
You can really see the lack of structure, continuity or confidence in the England team by this point. Revie clearly didn't have much of a plan or real idea what his best team was.
In these days, English TV pundits and commentators liked to make fun of foreign goalkeepers, particularly Scottish ones. Poetic justice.
@Erik Yes (apologies - unsure if you're being serious or sarcastic). For example, before a crucial World Cup qualifying game, Brian Clough, as a television football pundit, memorably called Poland goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski a "circus clown in gloves" - Poland then drew with England thanks to some great saves from Tomaszewski to qualify for the 1974 World Cup.
People today have no conception of what this meant for Scotland to beat the Auld Enemy.
> Who won that year, Dad?
>> WE did. We beat the buggers the next year too, son : )
Proper football ,
Rip big tam wat a tackle
The jocks really use to produce some cracking footballers top class, the shite they have now no wonder they haven't qualified for a major championship for 20 years, real crap
Thanks for the reminder. I know how crap we are now. Just glad I can look back on clips like this when we had decent side with good players. I often wonder why we can't produce any good players now... but there's a park near me and there's... nobody playing. When I was growing up, I spent every minute I could playing the game in the park, in the school playground, you name it.
