  • Could this concept make a tail-sitter aircraft more efficient and maneuverable? In this video, a variable angle of incidence wing is married to a tail-sitter. This could make the vehicle more efficient across a wider speed range, as it decouples the rotor disk plane from the wing angle of attack, thereby keeping the wing out of stall. This could have other advantages too, like improved maneuverability, if the wings were to move to improve pitch control or act as air brakes (if they move asymmetrically outwards). Overall, a super fun concept that I will continue to explore! Thanks for watching :)

I'm no expert, but that looks like a pretty sharp radius on the leading edge. I wonder if that would hurt efficiency if the angle of attack isn't head on. Super cool idea, I look forward to where this leads!

Great project, and very interesting configuration 👍🏻 Is this your very first foray into ArduPilot? If so, you really jumped into the deep end!

if you're looking for efficiency, one longer wing would work better, esp if inbetween the rotorwash.

The downwash flow of the propeller is quite different from the upcoming flow , I don’t think it’s necessary to change the incident angle if the wing is hiding behind the downwash disks of the propellers.

@Peter Was thinking that a Wing that was self orienting with the air-flows direction could work better. (Think wind vane) Where the air flows pressure on each side of the wing would adjust the its facing to balance the pressure. This would remove the need to use a servo and thus simplify the design.

equal pressure on each side means it's not making any lift - but it could still work using a "zero pitch airfoil" where the centre of lift is coincident with the centre of gravity.

I get the reasoning, but it does take away some of the elegance of your original designe.
also, the usecase seams limited to me. I see how this might increase efficiency in slow forward flight.
obviously I wont tell you what to do, you are way better in this stuff than I am. But are you interested in what direction of development would make me happy?

is it really efficient ? As the wake due to rotor would not be laminar on the wing, so will it be able to generate lift in the way an isolated wing would have generated in free stream flow at some angle of attack. If you have done some research, then please share. I would love to contribute, ut looks interesting if it can be made efficient.

    • @peterryseck

Yeah great point, there is a trade-off here between loss of thrust from rotor interference with the wing and wing stall. That's why collecting power & airspeed data for the different configurations will be important.
