Thanks for the review, really enjoyed it and good to see it in 'a new environment' - a couple of pointers from JF's FDE designer (i.e. me!) Take-off trim, the POH states neutral as default, but obviously that is going to be CG dependant. As it loads up, it's on the forward side of the CG and it's only really if you start loading weapons as well as full fuel that you head towards the rear half of the CG range. That's actually where neutral trim works, the POH does suggest 'up to 2 units' of nose up trim (so two notches on the trim gauge) for any forward CG situation.
Going on to the stall / spin situation you looked at - again, from the POH: "The low speed behaviour of the aircraft is docile; the aircraft is fully controllable down to the point of stall (CL max) and the controls remain effective even beyond the stall. The stall itself is not obvious but the aircraft may be flown under control until the control column is fully aft. Recovery at all stages is immediate when the control column is eased forward."
CL max for the wing on the T1 is 13 degrees.
Spinning (again, POH, summarised but direct quotes with nothing unnecessary removed. Otherwise, you'd be reading for hours): "General: The aircraft is very spin resistant . . . it can be made to spin by the use of recommended techniques. If the controls are mishandled the characteristics will vary and the spin may become very agitated. To enter the spin, close the throttle, smoothly and progressively apply full rudder in the intended direction of the spin and simultaneously apply full aft stick ensuring that the ailerons remain neutral."
Recommended entry height for a spin is 25,000 - 30,000 ft and if recovery has not occurred by 5,000 ft the recommended course of action is to eject. Well done with your recovery in the vid!!!!
I hope that's all of use, I think it addresses a fair bit of what you AND OTHERS have perceived as a weak point of the Hawk. Given the restrictions on what we can actually adjust in the flight model and that this is nowhere near where I wanted it to be as a direct result (i.e. we had far more control in FSX/P3D), I don't think it's too shabby!

      Hi Delta,
Glad you enjoyed the review! Thanks very much for the feedback and indeed all of your hard work on the Hawk!
I do apologise, I seem to have been somewhat wide of the mark with some of my analysis then. I always try and do my homework ahead of a review, but unfortunately going through the POH is a bit outside of what me free time allows (I do try my best to state when comments are conjecture etc though). From your post, it seems like you've got the Hawk nailed down pretty well then!
I have pinned your comment, so hopefully it should be clearly visible to viewers (and clarify any inaccuracies on my part).
I'm sure you have better things to do, but in future if you notice me leading the audience off down the garden path during a preview vid, please feel free to get in touch and I'll be more than happy to reconsider things for any final review!
Thanks again (everyone is loving the Hawk), all the best! : )

Hi, please enlighten me. To what does the acronym JF FDE expand. Sounds fascinating. I wonder if we could continue this dialogue by a forum other than OooToob to avoid clogging up these remarks pages?

    • @HerbertTowers
      @HerbertTowers 2 роки тому

I think that I recall (!) that to accelerate the spin, easing the stick forward a little could work, and that during the spin it really didn't matter what you did with the ailerons - until starting the recovery.

    An interesting review, thanks.
As a retired FJ Nav with over 3000 hrs, incl about 40 in the back seat of the Hawk, I’d offer the following:
    1. FJs do not “creak” when you pull “G”. The onset of this noise at 4G is rubbish.
    2. 4 G is normal, you have a G suit on, and it doesn’t stress trained FJ aircrew one bit, so the breathing noises are an unnecessary theatric.
    3. At 6 G you have to work a bit, especially if you are holding onto the grab bars, looking behind you and giving the pilot a running commentary on the “fight”.
    4. The Hawk has a very violent, erratic, spin.
    5. At high level, Fl 330 ish, it has the same fuel consumption as a LandRover, and can go for miles.
But the JF Hawk is fun to fly, just like the real thing.
    Rgds
    Chris

Cheers Chris, my pleasure on the review! Thanks very much for the comment - always great to have someone with real-world experience, offering up some insight.
      1. Interesting to know regarding the sounds. Do you notice much change in wind noise etc when manoeuvring? I suppose the sounds could either have been a “best guess”, or perhaps Just Flight’s attempt at giving the user a bit more “feedback” about what the aircrafts doing etc (as the user is of course lacking all of the other cues one might get from the real experience). Personally I don’t mind the odd “bogus” sound, if it’s making up for the sims shortfalls (I know others would disagree with me on that one though).
2 / 3. Haha, well maybe the 4G breathing was based on my own athletic ability, as opposed to the average FJ guy XD
Perhaps it would be good if Just Flight bumped the breathing fx threshold up to around 6G from what you’ve said. . .
      4. It sounds like Just Flight did a decent job with the spin characteristics then? Their FDE dev actually posted an insightful comment (which I’ve now pinned) regarding some of my criticisms / observations; it seems like the flight modelling is closer to the real thing than I had presumed (though I did state it was only a “best guess” on my part). As I (now) understand it; the Hawk stalls pretty sedately, it’s quite hard to get the aircraft into a spin, but rather aggressive once you’ve got it into one (as you allude to)?
      5. I’ve heard numerous aviators over the years, commenting on just how much fun the Hawk is. Just Flight certainly delivered in that department! Seems everyone is very much enjoying the little jet.
Thanks once again for taking the time to comment, much appreciated!
      All the best : )

Err, in my limited experience of flying the T1 in the front seat, my dim memory is that, the 'normal' upright spin wasn't as bad as you suggest. Ref your para 5, part of the sales pitch was a claim that after an hour of G.H. out of Valley one could divert as far as Nice.

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Fast pointy jet things are definitely noisier whilst airborne than when stationary on the ground.
If one is airborne and it all goes jolly quiet, you're probably going to be quite busy.

      Hi Tanberjan,
Personally I would go for the Turbo Arrow. Both are very good, but the Turbo Arrow is a more capable aircraft in terms of performance, so obviously it’s a little more versatile, also with the Turbo version you get both the T-tail and the standard tail variants (so a little bit more variety), with the normal Arrow you don’t. Both aircraft are nice, but if I could only choose one, it would definitely be the Turbo.

Haha, I think most of us use flight simulation for the same reason; it’s a great outlet for trying the things in life that we wish we’d done otherwise (but perhaps never will). I certainly enjoy MSFS (and other sims), because it gives me the opportunity to fly aircraft I’ll probably never be allowed near the controls of, it lets me fly around some parts of the world that I’ll never visit etc. Sadly I don’t have the opportunity to do any GA flying at the minute either, so the sim definitely fills that hole also. I’m glad that MSFS / flight simulation gives you some outlet for the flying bug, that’s one of the reasons I’ve always enjoyed the hobby; much more accessible and certainly much cheaper!

Excellent video, many thanks. I viewed your previous videos on this product, so today it’s really good to see it again, and of course the scenery is spectacular. I appreciate your hard work in putting this video together and of course Just Flight have produced a fantastic add on for MS FS 2020, the veritable Hawk T1, the Red Arrows as we all love and know so well. Impressive !. I will be purchasing this. Just a small mention, I still notice slight morphing of the mountains as you fly past. You can see the sharp details of the mountains from a distance, but as you approach the mountains their edges tend to smooth out and morph slightly, as if being stretched, it’s difficult to describe but I guess “ morphing “ is the terminology. I hope Asobo can fix this. A temporary solution is to increase terrain level of detail to 400, but that can seriously affect FPS in some areas. Please don’t let this observation affect the excellence of your video, it’s just something I noticed. I know terrain morphing can be an issue even with a fully updated MS FS 2020 to date. I’m sure Asobo will introduce a fix in the future.

The Hawk is a truly excellent product from Just Flight, happy to be able to do it a little bit of justice. Have you picked it up yourself now then? If so, I do hope you’re having fun! : D
Yes, the terrain morphing is very unfortunate and really starting to bug me now actually haha. I tried setting 400, but didn’t notice any significant improvement myself (I definitely noticed the drop in FPS though ha). I don’t recall it being an issue early on in the sim, but now I find its worse than even FSX / P3D - really quite jarring at times. It was noticeable by its absence, during my last flight in X-Plane. As you say, hopefully Asobo will find a way to reduce the effect at the very least.

      Hello Stuart,
Thank you very much for the kind words, I’m really happy to hear that you’re enjoying the content!
I’m afraid I simply don’t have the time to make a specific video on the subject, but I’d be happy to try and help all the same. How unstable are we talking here; inconvenient, or unflyable? Being a swept-wing jet, whilst the Hawk is quite docile for this type of aircraft, it’s inherently not going to be the best aircraft for cruising around (and will essentially require almost continual input from the pilot). That being said; 1) it’s worth checking that your sim’s flight model is set to “Modern”. If set to “Legacy”, that can induce strange behaviours from some addons and 2) Some addons tend to suffer as and when the sim gets updated. The Just Flight Arrows had issues with their flight models (after a previous sim update) until recently. Perhaps the same thing has happened with the Hawk. . .
I’m actually planning on reinstalling the Hawk in the coming days, so I’ll test the aircraft out and see what I find. I’ll aim to get back to you, but if you don’t hear anything for a while, please feel free to give me a nudge (I’ve been so busy of late, I fear I may forget haha).
I hope that gives at least a little clarity. Cheers and all the best! : )

great review, sir, as well as the preview! personally I prefer this scenery, I think it’s way more pretty for the eyes as the mach-loop. I have to try this round myself! :) I hope that I will see this beauty on XBOX as well, but as I realize JustFlight prefers rather their own shop, also the Arrows aren’t available on the console… would be nice to have a community flight as a Red Arrows formation or sg like that. :D btw. that spin you finally managed to get into scared the sh.. out of me! :DDD

According to Just Flight themselves, both the Hawk and the Arrow are planned for release on the Xbox. Apparently it’s taking a while for Asobo to approve the Arrow, because it has a large amount of custom code; the same will be true of the Hawk. They tentatively predict the Hawk should be available on the Xbox in around 3 months.
Haha, the spin totally caught me off guard too! I wasn’t expecting it to be *that* violent and thought for a minute I was going to have to re-record, after smashing it into the hills XD

Note my comment on trim in another post on this vid. Also, 92-93%rpm should give you 420kts at low level, that's 7 miles per minute for flight planning!

Delta558 did indeed make a very helpful post on the issue of trim, amongst other things (which I’ve pinned accordingly). Seems a little bit of trim can be called for during the takeoff after all. I gather multiples of 6 on the airspeed is the way to go when setting power - apparently those RAF chaps can’t “maths” too good ; )

Fantastic aircraft, very little to complain about. I wish the TACAN worked but i understand it's a MSFS limitation which I hope will be fixed in the near future. I do use a few degrees of nose up trim on takeoff which helps a lot, the aircraft flies pretty much hands off after takeoff as a result. My favorite thing to do is the penetration descent where i start my descent from high altitude at about 10 nm from the runway with idle thrust, airbrakes out and 350kts....just amazing how steep the descent is. Really fun aircraft to fly!

Glad your enjoying it! Indeed a working TACAN system would be nice, but that ball is firmly in Asobo’s court for the time being (and I think they have quite a few other shots they still need to return haha). I actually had the Just Flight FDE programmer clarify things a little re the trim: The JF manual calls for neutral, but depending on loadout etc, some nose up trim (as you have been doing) is actually the way to go. Like you, I’ve found the Hawk more or less glides off the runway with the trim set accordingly. A great effort from the JF team once again - still very much enjoying it myself as well!

      Hi Lewis,
Thanks very much for the suggestion! As much as I love this sort of flying and try to reproduce things as accurately as I can, I don't really feel it's something I'm qualified to teach unfortunately (having no real-world fast jet experience myself). I tend to feel a bit disingenuous offering up tutorials / advice on subjects I have no real-world training in, so I prefer to leave those subjects to the professionals.
If you're keen to know more about this sort of flying though, I know the perfect man for the job!

I hope that helps and that you get some useful info from his channel!

P.S. For what it's worth; the reason for banking in such a way, is that most aircraft are far more resilient to positive g than negative g (the same is true of the pilot). So it's much better to roll and pull, than it is to be pushing forward on the stick.

Great review for a great addon. Just Flight are undoubtedly one, if not the best 3rd party addon makers out there. What elevates them for me is they listen to user feedback, and since this video was made, we now know seeing the pilots in interior is going to become a thing in update 1.1. Worth every penny. Now then, all we need now is to be able to slide the glare visor and detach the oxygen mask like in the X-Plane version Just Flight (hint hint) ;)

I actually role play in the sim, maybe that's not what it's obviously meant for right, but MS still themselves don't have a feature to turn on the co-pilot and ignore the "wish list" with over 240 votes for this. We have to rely on modders or 3rd party payware devs to implement these features in that's why the Pipers are so important to me, even though the way it's implemented is a bit hokey. I start the Piper up, co-pilot has issue, no problem then let the co-pilot take off and fly the plane as I take in the scenery, switch cameras, I love it and this is how I relax after a day at work. I have to see my co-pilot or the illusion is shattered. I do it on all my aircrafts, the A320 with SLC is pefect for this kind of immersion and role play, a bit of me doing the stuff, the auto-pilot and co-pilot. That little thing, after to started it all up, crane your neck and see your buddy is actually there with you. It's a deal breaker for me even though you might only ever do it once or twice. Big up for JF and I can't wait for anything they do.

I’m very much looking forward to V1.1 also. Like you, I find that pilot models really amp up the immersion, even just knowing they’re there haha.

So close to DCS that I hit F3 for a flyby after first takeoff!
Systems seems to work - the RAT deployment is simulated. And the 130 page manual reflects this. But in flight relight seems not to work. Motor spools up to 15% - with no rise in EGT. Could be an Asobo limitation, the same with CRJ aircraft
    - But close to - over envelope strange things happens. It refuse to go high AOA (IMO). Pulling max G - 9 - in tights turn, it is closer to F-16. Flying several 360 will little drag. It drops slowly to 200 knots and holds 4 G with no sign to stall.
But within normal envelope everything feels correct. At touchdown other aircraft just stop to fly. JF Hawk you can feel and hear the touchdown, and you can hold aerodynamic braking to under 100 knots.
Such a great aircraft - immersion is close to100% -
Nice to learn that GPS is supplied in original Red Arrows. It is very basic nav with the VOR installed. BTW: Thanks for converting Tacan to VOR frequencies - well done. On cruise you need to be patient to trim off pitch. Use throttle for the finer adjustment. Holding heading is no problem.
Thanks to Just Flight for pushing M$F$ in our serious simmers direction, and not making cheap money on the xBox kids.

I know exactly what you mean Øystein; I nearly stated in my conclusion, that the JF Hawk could just as easily be a DCS module, but decided not to do so in the end (as it would only be “opening up a can of worms” haha).
I very much agree that the flight model feels great in the normal flight regime, less so at the extremes of the envelope. The JF FDE dev actually wrote a comment regarding much of this (which I pinned), quite an interesting read. It seems the Hawk’s characteristics are closer to reality than I had first anticipated, but he does also state that they weren’t able to achieve all that they wanted, with the sims current flight model.
A brilliant and highly immersive aircraft as you say - also great fun! Happy flying! : )

    • @justflight

It's not a case of not supporting Xbox Steven. We can't release for Xbox anywhere else than via the MS marketplace. So what we do is this - we develop and release the product for PC platform from our website. We'll then wait a while until the product is stable and all initial updates are done and applied to the product. Then we have to tweak/edit the current product to make it suitable for Microsoft and their marketplace (remove weapons etc) and then it can get sent off to MS. That's then the start of the journey. MS do their due diligence and check everything at their end which includes thorough testing for Xbox platform. That has nothing to do with us. We sit and wait. As with the Arrows we're likely to then receive feedback with a view to having to make some changes, do further testing. Remember our add-ons contain tons of custom code (some add-ons from other devs don't and that's likely to result in less issues) so that's usually an issue and tends to throw up problems. So to summarise we can do our bit, which will happen but not immediately, we'll then submit to MS and then wait for their feedback. History tells us that that's where the delays begin, little we can do other than to react and work on the issues they report back to us, at the same time while we're working on development of other add-ons. So for this Hawk, maybe a month or so but more likely a couple of months if we're being realistic and anything sooner treat as a bonus. Sorry for the long explanation but I hope that helps somewhat.

      Hi Prodius,

Hmm, that’s strange. . . I’m not using a mod, the Hawk does come with weapons options by default.
Is the Hawk available on the Marketplace now and did you by any chance purchase it from there? Unfortunately the Marketplace doesn’t allow for the sales of any aircraft fitted with weapons, so developers have to remove the functionality when selling in-sim. I’m guessing that might be your issue?
It’s a very frustrating rule and lots of people get caught out by it - Asobo really needs to be clearer regarding the situation (or do away altogether with the rule ideally).

In the [CAMERADEFINITION.0] section, edit the values for 'InitialPbh =' to 0, 0, 0 (from -17, 0, 0) and in [CAMERADEFINITION.3] to 0, 0, 0 (from -20, 0 0). This will set the view dead ahead, and you can tweak it from there if necessary. The values are for degrees of pitch, roll and yaw respectively.
The rear seat especially felt extremely uncomfortable for me in vr with its 20' downward pitch, but with that fixed I don't think I'll ever fly from the front seat again.

Thanks very much for the info Otter! I’ll definitely look into tweaking that myself. I’m not as familiar with MSFS CFGs as I was with previous sims, but I’m sure I can figure it out (looks like roughly the same procedure / format anyway). There’s a few other aircraft I’ll take a look at whilst I’m at it. . .

Great video, thank you. I love this plane and I am amazed how fluid is your flight. I unfortunately get a significant FPS drop with this plane (from 35 PFS for the F14, down to 18 FPS for the Hawk) and am not sure why.. Would you be able to share your (VR) graphic settings with the Hawk ?

      Hi Gilles,
Thank you very much, my pleasure!
I’m sorry to hear that. I’d imagine FPS impact depends heavily on hardware; unfortunately I can only give results based on my own system of course. I haven’t tried the Hawk in VR yet (as VR doesn’t run great on my system either). The head motion you see is actually as a result of TrackIR. In 2D, I run the sim on the “High End” preset at 1080p. I have VSync locked at 60 FPS and AI traffic and Motion Blur turned off - those are my only changes really. The reason my flight is fluid with decent FPS is because it’s only 2D though.
Hope that clears things up a bit. All the best! : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Thank you for your reply. As a comment, I have a very high end PC with everything on ultra on 2 D mode and I get 60FPS for most of the planes except for the Hawk and the Pilatus PC6 (Milviz), which both drops at 35 FPS - still very good in 2 D. But in VR mode, with everything down to High instead of Ultra, I get a 35 FPS for all planes, except for the Hawk and the PC6, which drop below 18 fps, which spoils totally the experience. I wonder if other people get such a massive drop in FPS with the Hawk and the PC6 in VR mode: I have to go to medium and low graphics to have sth smooth, but that is not an option for me, given the investment for quality graphics. Can you perhaps direct me to a video where someone review the Haw in VR ?

He covers all thing flight sim / VR on his channel and has a few videos in the Hawk. If you leave a question there, hopefully he’ll be able to get back to you. I think he has a pretty powerful machine as well, so you should be able to figure out what’s possible in terms of FPS.

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 роки тому

      Hi Liam, thanks very much!
I’m afraid it might not be the answer you want to hear (as it may mean spending more money haha), but I would say (objectively) the Hawk is the superior product. Both have their strengths of course; I would say graphically they are similar, systems-wise there is about as much surface depth between the two, but the Hawk has a lot more modelled “behind the scenes” (and the systems are basically study level). The sounds and flight model are vastly superior on the Hawk (though the flight model still has a couple of issues). The T-45 is a nice addon, but it’s somewhat like comparing the Carenado Arrow with the Just Flight one (if that analogy makes any sense to you). I find the Hawk a much more accomplished and enjoyable product personally.
I can’t say whether that justifies the additional cost to you, but if I could only pick one, it would absolutely be the Hawk.

Noticed the same issue with no audio in the Pipers - in my case, it was because the comms volume had to be turned up using the dial. Since the dial also controls power to the unit, I suspect some panel state defaults set it to 1%-ish, high enough for the unit to be on, but not enough to hear. The text/subtitles in turn ignore the volume.

      Hi Jayrer,
The JF Hawk has always been a bit tricky in terms of directional control during takeoff / landing (although generally, I've found it to be OK outside of crosswind conditions). I haven't had a chance to fly the jet recently, so I can't comment on the current state of the flight model. I know the JF Arrow family has been "broken" by previous sim updates; Just Flight are working on a fix for their Arrows / Warrior, so perhaps the Hawk requires similar treatment. . .
I don't know about the Hawk specifically but on many jets, the nosewheel steering authority does "blend" out, as speed increases during the takeoff. This being said, there should still be enough rudder authority to keep the jet straight of course.

In any real a/c I'd expect those wacky oscillations in all 3 axes (mostly in pitch) only with an out of limits aft centre of mass.
I think that this is a dreadful snag in all of the MS flight models. Err, are you sure about the Arrows smoke controls, when I were a lad these were wired into the weapons switchery.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 роки тому

Well MSFS has had issues with CofG, almost since its inception (with many aircraft being out of balance by default); so that could be what was affecting the Hawk here (though I don't recall that being the case at the time in all honesty). The strange oscillations are fairly typical MSFS behaviour though as you say. MSFS does model environmental effects, so turbulence, lift and sink off hills etc; it does this better than most sims (in that it does it at all), but most aircraft do seem to be far too upset by its effects (I think I know at least partially why that is, but it would be a bit much to get into here. . .).
As for the smoke controls, I have absolutely no idea personally haha! I'm sure your memory serves you correctly though; it would no doubt be much easier to activate the smoke from the weapons controls, than trying to reach up to the glare shield whilst pulling several g!

      Hi Klem,
To add a Lat / Long waypoint you should be able to type it in as such N2244E00938 etc. The sim should accept that. You can also simply right-click where you would like to place a manual waypoint on the map and click “add” to create a waypoint (you will need to set up your departure / arrival airfields first). Unfortunately the flight planning tools in MSFS are still pretty clunky at the moment though. Waypoints sometimes don’t take correctly, or will end up out of sequence etc. The map also freezes sometimes for me as well. When I have the time, I will look into creating a custom flight plan for the route and try and figure out the best way to share it etc. If I figure something out, I will post a link in the video description : )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  2 роки тому

Yep, that’s the way to do it! The only frustration can be, that the sim decides for you in which order it’s going put the waypoints - and it’s logic is often flawed (particularly on circular routes). It doesn’t seem to be possible to re-order the waypoints(?), so sometimes you can end up with some rather bizarre flight plans haha.

Thanks very much Tickle, much appreciated! Fair enough and understood.
Just Flight did actually post in relation to this; they basically stated that they plan to bring the Hawk to the Xbox, but that once things are handed over to Asobo, there is little JF can do on their end. Apparently the reason for the significant delays, is the amount of custom coding that JF uses, meaning it takes Asobo a lot longer to test their aircraft (than a lot of the other (junk) products that make it to the Marketplace). So the good news is that it’s still expected that the Hawk etc will make it onto the Xbox (expected in to take a couple of months currently).
That’s a shame to hear about the state of the platform though. I didn’t realise things were quite like that. There always seems to be so much lag between devs work and Asobo introducing it into the sim. To some degree I can understand it, but they definitely need to figure out ways to optimise the process. The Xbox is still a relative new platform for the sim, so hopefully it’ll find its feet in due course.
