      I wish I had more skills in this sort of department. I’ve seen some amazing custom controller build on Reddit etc. My plan is definitely to let Authentic do all of the clever bits for me, when I finally have the room to set up a dedicated sim ; )

    Thanks for this video, not only for the spit review but for showing off the I.O.W, where i grew up. I too was disappointed about the needles but revitalised when you flew my old hometown of Shanklin at 26:40. Impressed you could make out not only Shanklin beach but also the adjoining Small Hope Beach. Very impressed the amusement arcade on the sea front was visible too. Nice to see from Australia.

      Thanks very much Matthew! Really glad you enjoyed the video and the little blast from your past (it’s impressive what you can see in the sim hey).
      I have been lucky enough to hop over to the Isle of Wight in the real world on a couple of occasions; always a great day out. Also did one of my worst ever landings, if not the worst, going into Bembridge haha. Can’t win em all I guess!
      Well you’ve gone from living south of the UK mainland, to quite a bit further south haha! I guess it’s summer for you guys at the moment, so I hope you’re enjoying the sun and it’s not toooo hot.

    This is now the best plane for VR. The reason is that you get incredible FPS, probably due to it's relatively simple systems. I'm not sure whatever vodoo or witchcraft FlyingIron employed, but it's a really smooth experience. I don't have a top notch system (RTX 2070, 16gb, I5 9600K), but with the Spit it just flies!
    The sounds could be a bit more fullsome, but for now it suffices, I suppose. All in all a 100% recommendation from me.

      Sounds are dreadful, a Merlin this is not!

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому +3

      I knew the sounds wouldn’t be too everyone’s taste. I’m not sure the video does them 100% justice (I had to tone them down, so people could hear me ha), the sounds have quite a “powerful” feel to them in actuality. But I think they do have more of a “putt putt” to them than they should (amongst other things). Overall, whilst acknowledging they aren’t accurate, I think they give a good effect, if that makes sense. I thought it sounded somewhat familiar during the flyby as well. . .
      Anyway, if enough people aren’t keen on the sounds, I’m sure the developers will consider a re-work. They seem very open to feedback and presumably changing the sounds wouldn’t be a mammoth undertaking.
      Cheers

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      Yeah, it’s brilliant in VR! Just did a little trip myself. Performance is great and that wing just looks even better in 3D! : P
      For sure, FlyingIron Simulations have performed some sorcery on this one haha! Seems the sounds aren’t to everyone’s tastes. I hope they improve them to a point where everyone is happy. Personally I thought they were a drastic improvement over the last version I tried and so maybe they seemed better to me than they do on a first look / listen. I think they give the right “effect” if not an accurate sound. If they can get it closer to a real-world Merlin though, I’m never going to complain! : )

      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, in terms of the cockpit visuals, I’m not even sure I could really find fault!
      It’s funny though how two different models can look very different but still both look amazing. I was sure when I got back in the A2A Spit, I would feel underwhelmed by the visuals, but it still looks amazing too. Both aircraft cockpits have quite different shapes, textures and overall feels to them in the cockpit, but somehow they both seem spot on haha.
      Anyway, thanks for stopping by my man! Will we be seeing you in the skies in the Spit any time soon? : )
      Ps, just watched your Bush Talk radio vid. I’ve been looking for something like this in MSFS for years (you used to be able to pick up the odd adventure like it)! Looks brilliant. Definitely going to have to check it out for myself!

      Noted on the tutorials. I did quite a few in the earlier days of the channel, but for whatever reason they somewhat fell off the radar. I'm a bit more pushed for time these days and as the channel has somewhat morphed into a review channel it seems, so I have tended to focus on those where I can. I do also try to make my reviews a little bit of a tutorial in their own right; running through procedures and techniques etc as I go. All that being said, it's not to say that I wouldn't consider more tutorials in the future.
      Thanks very much for your comment, very much appreciated!

      I see you’ve got the message; but yes, Page Up on the keyboard seems to do the trick for now. Apparently all this will be sorted in future updates, with a “proper” radio coming to the aircraft etc as well. I know the X-Plane version has an optional radio and GPS.

    The Spitfire really was the UK's guard dog during WWII. Without it and the brave pilots that flew them the UK may have fallen to the blitzkrieg. It's nice to see it in MSFS. A good tribute to the steed of noble warriors.

      Yeah, it’s a bit of a handful on the takeoff since the update, but the team have done complete justice to the Spit in terms of recreating its beauty! One of the most beautiful sim models I’ve come across to date and from the right angle, in the right lighting conditions, it looks nothing short of real!

      I tried it out in VR, it looks wonderful, but sadly it was a bit of a slideshow for me. Not the aircrafts fault, my machine is getting on a bit + the latest sim update seems to have killed VR performance for me unfortunately. The Spit should be a good option for VR in theory though, since it doesn’t really impact the FPS.

    I bought this yesterday - I don't know anything about the flight dynamics and systems - however, i have found this one to be very detailed for my experience. Taking off was relatively easy - sadly I have landed safely 3 out of 7 times.....most times the plan seems to tip over onto one wing (not turning actually tipping). I have flown it all over the place passing many of the landmarks in UK.....I love it. And opening the cockpit cover in air is great fun. Thanks for showing the start up - that helped. I have a button assigned to turning on avionics/radios which over comes the issue. Great review - very emotional musical interlude .

      Thanks very much Mark! Glad you are enjoying the Spit : )
      There really is nothing better for exploring all the new UK scenery! If it’s any consolation, my landings seem to be getting progressively worse haha. I was super happy with my first, second one was a bit long. Third one, almost came off the end of the runway! Ha. It wast even a particularly short runway. . . As you say, definitely offers a challenge and gotta keep a positive control over those ailerons at all times during takeoff and landing and definitely can’t take any extra speed over the threshold.
      Glad you enjoyed the music, one of my favourite pieces. Very soul stirring. You’ll probably enjoy the next Mach Loop cinematic if you enjoyed that ; )

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому +1

      The Spitfire is definitely a bit of a handful on takeoff and landing (as I believe it should be), it is controllable though; it just takes a bit of preempting I find (it’s also more controllable now, than it has been in previous updates). This video is a little bit old now, but may hopefully still be of some use:
      ua-cam.com/video/CuNVl84p7VM/v-deo.html
      The real key is using backstick to keep the tail on the ground initially and not coming up to full power during the takeoff.
      Good luck and all the best! : )

    As owner of the RealAir Spitfire in FSX, the A2A Spitfire I/II in P3D, the DCS Spitfire (which I cannot fathom at all, it feels too twitchy), and the FlyingIron version in X-Plane 11, I was really impressed with the way you approached the whole review. You highlighted for me a number of issues that may be limitations of MSFS currently, I cannot say. I am on the fence with MSFS. The visuals are stunning, but there are issues with flight modelling it would appear, as well as systems simulation. Maybe the MS/Asobo team will get on top of it. It is a mammoth task...
    Your video was the first I have seen so far that actually follows the procedure of pulling back the prop rpm after take-off. Every other "review" has the prop at full rpm all the time, and the governor in MSFS doesn't seem to do its job so well... later Mk IXs had a prop/throttle interconnect that would automatically set the rpm according to the throttle position, but I am not sure what FIS did here. Can you see if any such system is operating?
    The Spitfire in all variants always needed pretty much full right rudder trim on take off, as the left swing caused by the Merlin (and later Griffon) was violent. You need it in DCS, otherwise you'll not get off the ground safely :)
    Take-off in the Spitfire Mark IX as you rightly say does not need full throttle, +7 to +9 is sufficient, and the tail lifts as soon as you neutralize the stick. You should hold that slight nose-up attitude throughout the take-off roll, because the Spitfire simply becomes airborne on its own on that beautiful wing. You shouldn't need to apply any back pressure to get her to take off...
    Loved your honest review and clear, procedures-oriented delivery. Maybe I will reinstall the FIS Mk IX into x-plane 11.52, it is just the ground-handling physics in x-plane for tailwheel aircraft, particularly with free castoring tailwheels, are not optimum... the FIS in x-plane with free castoring tailwheel is a real handful on the ground and totally kicked the realism factor for me.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      Well thank you very much!
      I was quite lucky with this review, as I already had lot of time in the A2A Spit (one of, if not my favourite sim aircraft of all time), so I was reasonably comfortable with what I was doing, though I always try to “study up” for any review. I think it’s the best way to test a product. If it broadly works based on using the correct procedures, then it’s probably a pretty good addon. (You have a fellow sceptic of the DCS Spitfire here as well by the way haha). The flying model isn’t perfect, but overall I’m really happy with it and enjoy it very much.
      Personally I really enjoy MSFS, but I really only use it for cruising around VFR (which is what I most enjoy when simming anyway); and for that the flight model is “good enough”. As you say though, it will be a mammoth task to get it to a “completed” point, where it’s on a par with other sims in terms of its utility.
      Re the automatic governor. I didn’t notice any such thing, but then again I’m not entirely sure what to look out for in terms of power setting vs response etc?
      I imagine the Spit would be a complete handful in X-Plane yes? It was ground handling in X-Plane that initially put me right off it. I was finding myself being blown around in moderate crosswinds; full rudder, full brake and the aircraft would still be weathervaning. I’ve since come back to X-Plane though, it’s my go-to choice now for IFR / heavy jets.
      Once again, thanks very much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! : )

      Having now tried the freeware recording tool for MSFS, I think Mach Loop runs should now be a possibility! (Though camera angles may still be tricky). There’s a bit of a queue of Mach Loop videos ready to go, so this one might be a little while off, but I’m sure it will get its turn in due course : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Yes I did, a day or so after you posted it. I was so excited that I had not initially realized it was for P3D, until of course I saw the scenery when you started the flight! I was amazed at the way A2A had modeled the engine performance and that as you pushed it to the limit on the Loop it complained somewhat through temperatures and engine sound. I have been a flight simmer since Bruce Artwick released his Flight Simulator for the Apple II in the early 80s under the subLOGIC label. My favourite Spitfire for FSX was the one released by RealAir Simulations in 2008. Not sure whether you ever flew that one, and if you did how you think it compares?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      Ah, haha, apologies for getting your hopes up on that one. P3D is generally still the best platform for the Mach Loop videos, as it has somewhat decent recording and camera options, not to mention a plethora of aircraft available. Obviously it is looking a bit tired and old these days though. The performance is also pretty appalling when you fly high speed haha. MSFS is becoming viable now though with the freeware flight recorder becoming available.
      Yes, the A2A Spit is an absolute masterpiece. Despite owning it for nearly a decade now, I think that was the first time I’ve ever really pushed it like that haha. The A2A aircraft have persistent states, so if you break something, it stays broken indefinitely and will need repairing before your next flight. Really encourages you to fly the aircraft like you own it, which I always enjoyed. Sadly I never tried the RealAir Spitfire, I’ve been hearing a lot of great things about it through this video though. Some people saying it was better than the A2A version. I’m in awe if that’s true!
      Wow, you’ve been flight simming a while then! I consider myself a bit of an old hand these days, started out in FS95, but you’ve got a few years on me ; )

    Gave it a go myself and enjoyed it - nice to have something playful yet so legendary done in good detail in MSFS... the small animations like the door and the canopy being able to be opened/closed really adds to the realism... the only thing it is truly missing for those who have sat in a spitfire IRL... is the smell of history, and the raw smell of oil and grease!
    One negative though for me... it lacks the ROAR from the Merlin engine

      Also watched some of your VATSIM tutorials the other day as a bit of a refresher (been a long time since I’ve done any VFR radio stuff), so thanks very much for those!
      Yeah, sadly you’ll never get the smell of history I suppose, unless you buy old parts off eBay and litter them around your desk I maybe ha. I quite liked the engine sounds. Seems I’m in the minority though. They don’t sound quite like a Merlin admittedly, but they do have quite a “power” to them. Seems a lot of people aren’t content with the sounds, so hopefully the developers will update them accordingly. It certainly does the looks of the Spitfire justice, would be wonderful if it sounded just as good too.

      The sounds I thought were good but they lacked the raw power from outside - when I did some of the flypast shots in my video I expected the unmistakable roar of the merlin engine tearing overhead and I didn't get that so was a little sad about that... still great fun though!

    Great review thanks. You tend to focus on the things that I look for. Before I purchased MSFS I was impressed by the blurb about the flight modelling and airflow over the lift surfaces. I must say having flown all the GA models that come with the sim, they all do fly in a simular way, with a definate "on rails" P3d feel, which is dissappointing. The Spit looks to have been added to, aerodynamically, which is great. Hope they keep developing it. Your stall demo was good, but some buffet would have been nice? Ive never flown a Spit and probably never will, but the vets all said that you strap it on and think it into turns, looks like were close to that here! Cheers.

    • @cmac6769

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому +1

      That’s it, no sim seems to do GA particularly well (I haven’t tried any civilian aircraft in DCS mind you). Whilst MSFS certainly has its drawbacks, I find it does the best job of recreating the “feeling” of flight under normal conditions. As soon as you give it something abnormal though, it all falls apart. I think that’s why some people like MSFS and some people don’t. It very much depends on the type of flying you generally do in the sim. The Spit seems to be a step in the right direction anyway. . .

      Thanks once again David!
      I definitely tried to take on your feedback and show a little more in terms of the flight modelling. Glad it was of interest to you. I generally don’t mind the MSFS flight model, but as I mentioned in another comment, I think that’s because left to my own devices, I just cruise around on little VFR trips. I seem to me in the minority re the flight model in MSFS.
      Yes, some more buffet may well be expected. Not having flown a Spitfire myself either, I’m not sure. I don’t even know what the developers can and can’t model with the current SDK. All I can say is, it’s a step in the right direction. I’ve read the same thing many times myself; you don’t strap into a Spitfire, you strap ON a Spitfire. You get some sense of that with this version, though for me, I still don’t think one can beat the A2A version for that feeling : )

    Edit: bought it and love it. Far more challenging than anything else I've used in the sim so far. My first and second landing attempts were unquestionable go-arounds. Might've pulled them off if I had double or triple the amount of runway to play with. My third was a perrrfect three-point landing and I pulled up to a stop in about 200 yards. In my defence, the sim has rendered an enormous tree right at the tip of my local Thurrock airfield, which presents its own challenges.

      Doubly glad to hear you’re enjoying the product, you and me both! My landings seem to be getting progressively worse haha. I was pretty chuffed with my landing in the first vid, landed a bit long in the second vid. Just took a little trip out in her this morning and almost came off the end of the runway! Wasn’t even a particularly short runway haha. You really can’t carry any excess speed over the threshold. As you say, a nice little challenge to have in the sim and just such a pleasant aircraft to fly. Wonderful for taking in the UK scenery as well.
      Haha, yeah, unfortunately MSFS does seem to have a bit of a habit of putting trees, pylons etc where they’re not wanted. At least if you have to negotiate your way around a tree, you might actually get a glimpse of the runway, rather than it being stuck underneath the nose ha.

      I don’t believe that I was using any such mods at the time: I do run the Bijan 4 Seasons Pack these days (which can be used to adjust the ground textures somewhat), but I’m fairly sure I recorded this video well before installing the addon. I generally spend quite a bit of time tweaking the weather / lighting in my videos (though less so when this was recorded) and that can have quite a drastic effect on how the sim looks. Ultimately, the sim has been through a lot of changes since I made this video, not all of them good, so it may just be that the ground / vegetation colours looked more realistic back then.
      I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best! : )

I believe there is actually the option to do this for real in the UK actually ha. Well the fact you had an attempt is a plus to me and things can only improve from an attempt. The far away sounds were okay but the way I think they do it on other games is they sample loads of sounds of different parameters, different rpm, different distances and they compile it somehow because in the sound files for Il2 there's all different engine types and different sounds for each ie: merlin1600, merlin2000, merlin far and merlin close for example. Thats just a guess but since you did attempt it then I commend it and I look forward to seeing more if you are 👍

    Thanks for the good review! I wish the P8 compass was modelled properly, don't really buy that it's simplified for casual use when there's the flight gyroscope on the front dash which can be used for compass headings as well. Plenty of planes had decently modelled the P8s in the older sims. The rear wheel not being free moving is more than a minor niggle in my mind as that's one of the reasons why the Spit is a beast to handle on the ground IRL as there's no locking mechanism to keep it straight and the bloody thing just wants to turn where it wants but as that's a limitation with the sim I'll give them a pass. Aside from those things it does look rather splendid and I'll probably have to end up buying it. Thanks gain. Cheers!

      Yeah, I’d certainly prefer if it had been modelled correctly. I don’t actually know the rationale behind it, that was just a guess on my part. I’m sure they’d have gotten a lot of bug reports that the “compass doesn’t even work” haha. I wonder if the FlyingIron guys haven’t even misunderstood it themselves, because the manual would seem to suggest they believe it to be modelled correctly. They link to a very nice video by “DreamsofWings”, which is actually the guy I learnt how to use it from in the first place haha. Obviously the video and the FlyingIron P8 don’t correlate though.
      As you say, the DI would have worked just fine for most, although I tink that could use a little work too. Seems to behave more like a compass than a gyro. Tailwheel I can certainly give them a pass on either way. As you say, if it’s not in the SDK, not much they can do.
      I believe an update is in the works, which fixes some of my gripes, maybe some of yours will be also. I don’t mind a few bugs, so long as they are fixed expeditiously. They seem like a good bunch of guys, happy to take on board feedback etc. That’s what you want to see from a developer.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      Hi Szufla,
      To some degree, yes. You can do an automatic start, turn auto-mixture on in the sim. The aircraft does not have any autopilot modes, but if you turn the autopilot on, the aircraft will fly straight and level. The sim also has a “virtual copilot” that can fly the plane for you (though it isn’t very good). Takeoffs and landings are very manual, but you can alway slew the aircraft, or even just start in the air! So it’s somewhat doable, but I must say the aircraft isn’t entirely suited to it I’m afraid. . .

      Yes the plane will still fly. There are one or two procedures that are critical (like have the fuel tank pressure selector on at altitude), but for the most part, so long as the engine is running, you’ll be able to get the aircraft up in the air. Oooo, that’s a tough one! My head would say Corsair, my heart would say Spitfire haha. Both aircraft are excellent in their own right, though I think it would be difficult to argue that the Corsair isn’t the more accurate product overall.
      Corsair Pros
      - More comprehensive systems and flight modelling
      - “Feels” as you expect it would
      - Bordering on a “study level” representation of the aircraft
      - Munitions modelled (to some degree - if purchased outside of the sim).
      Spitfire Pros
      - Stunning visual model inside and out
      - More pleasant to fly
      - More forgiving
      - FPS friendly
      - Cheaper
      - It’s a Spitfire : P
      In most other areas the products are broadly similar. FlyingIron have done a lot of work on the Spit since its release and it has come a long way. It now flies much more plausibly, sounds better, has more comprehensive systems modelling etc. MILVIZ tend to patch much less often, but with bigger updates (the last update was amazing!).
      In terms of overall quality, I would have to say the Corsair clinches it, but as a Brit, I think I would take the Spitfire by a hairs breadth.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations

      Hi Michael,
      For the engine start, I'm afraid it would be very difficult to help without seeing what you're doing.
      The Spit is indeed rather front-heavy, especially when taxiing. The aircraft was known for its poor ground handling; it has a big beefy V12 up the front and a rather narrow undercarriage, which makes it quite easy to tip the nose over etc. Use full back-stick whenever you're taxiing and go very gently on the brakes.
      As for the tendency for the aircraft to want to dive and turn left - it sounds like you probably aren't trimming the aircraft? You'll need to use elevator and rudder trim to help keep the aircraft straight and level (again this is quite normal for the Spit).
      It won't cover all of the issues you raise here, but you might find this video more useful:

      Are you using any rudder trim? The checklist does actually call for rudder trim during the takeoff, as that powerful Merlin engine produces a lot of torque etc. Also, avoid using full power unless you have to - the more power you use, the trickier the takeoff will be.

    FlyingIron released an updated version of the Spitfire on 3/13 (v.1.0.1). Includes a good list of updates and changes, one of which being the flight model to which they now warn "Overall, the flight dynamics have been made more realistic and therefore the Spitfire is now slightly more difficult to fly (especially on takeoff)."
    It was already a handful to start with. Even at 5.0 rudder trim and trying to ease into the throttle it still yaws left hard and starts to tip the wing. Ugh....anyone have advice on how to properly spool it up on takeoff roll to reduce those effects? I have rudder pedals, too, and even with using those it's extremely twitchy.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      I saw they’ve released an update, haven’t had the chance to try it myself yet though.
      In the real Spit, you should trim full right rudder for the takeoff (I don’t know if that equates to 5.0?), so maybe try that. Other than that yeah, sounds like you’re doing everything right. Verrrry slowly ease in the throttle and build up plenty of airspeed before you reach takeoff boost. You don’t need full power either, around 8psi on the boost should do it. Avoid crosswinds as well, I think it was somewhat rare for aircraft of this era to be taking off in any real crosswind (as most airfields were either literally that, a field, or had 3 runways).
      Once I’ve had a chance to try the update for myself, I’ll let you know if I can come up with any more tips : )

      Apologies if I am asking the obvious, but are you making use of the elevator trim? Trim is certainly the way to go, in terms of reducing pilot workload / input on the controls. If the aircraft is exhibiting a strange pitch down behaviour, then perhaps make sure that the centre of gravity is within limits (via the sim's load and balance menu). It's also possible that perhaps the addon needs a fix after a previous sim update, but I'm not sure on that one.

      I’m afraid I don’t really have the answer I’m sure you were hoping for. Can you run VR? Sure. Smoothly? Probably not I’m afraid.
      I have a very similar system myself, but with more RAM and a better graphics card. I can get “OK” performance sometimes, but mostly it’s far from ideal. That being said, I do have some of the graphics options turned up and I am running a HP Reverb G2, which does require more from the computer. In general the sim just puts a lot of strain on current hardware though (even in 2D).
      Again though, overall you would be able to run VR. With the graphics options all turned down and a lower resolution headset, it should be “OK”. The sim won’t look nearly as nice, but if it’s your first VR experience, you probably still won’t be disappointed? VR is an amazing experience, there’s no doubt about it! It’s so much more immersive and once you’ve tried it, it’s very hard to go back to 2D.
      I can only really recommend the headsets I’ve actually tried of course, but I’m a big fan of the Samsung Odyssey and I would recommend that to you as it’s reasonably priced and the resolution is such that it’s better suited to your system. It’s also a really nice headset generally.

    V cool.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      Haha, yeah the Spit can be a bit of a handful initially!
      The boost is basically a measure of how much engine power you’re using. You’re probably overheating the engine because you’re running the engine too hard and / or not getting enough air through the radiators.
      Generally speaking, full power was used very rarely in these sorts of aircraft, really only in combat and even then for short periods. So if you run full power all of the time, the engine is liable to overheat. Similarly the engine is liquid cooled, using two radiators under the wing. The more airflow going through these radiators, the easier it is for the system to cool the engine. So high speed = good for cooling, low speed = bad.
      Off the top of my head for boost settings;
      Takeoff = 8 / Full rpm
      Climb = 2 / 2600 rpm
      Cruise = 2 or less / 2400 rpm.
      Those might not be exact, but they should do the trick.
      Hope that helps a little bit and keeps your Spit nice and cool! ; )

      If you're happy to explain that lever I'd be appreciative also :) it doesn't seem to be explained in the manual.
      Really nice change, going through the whole cold start, taxi, engine maintenance in flight, then landing and shut off. I've also switched rudder from the flightstick to the paddles on my TWCS throttle - much better using both sides of the brain for the two different surfaces.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому +1

      You’re most welcome!
      Re using the prop rpm to control the engine, of course that’s absolutely fine (in the sim) if it works for you and you find it easier, but in reality you might well end up inducing a big old explosion! : D
      The simplest way to think of the rpm controls, is a bit like the gears on your bicycle. The throttle controls how much energy you put into peddling and the rpm is like changing up or down gears (high rpm is like a low gear and vice versa). In essence, it’s easier for the engine to turn the propeller at high rpm. As you reduce rpm, it becomes harder and harder for the engine to turn the prop (harder and harder for you to peddle), but if you provide enough power from the engine it will keep trying to turn the prop nonetheless. Imagine if your pedals were made from wood; it’s plausible that you would put in enough energy trying to overcome a high gear, that you might break them. It’s the same for your engine (even more so with a powerful supercharged engine like the Merlin).
      So, in short, you want to avoid high boost and low rpm (on any aircraft really). As such, you should generally always operate the engine controls in the following order:
      Increasing Power
      1) Increase mixture
      2) Increase prop rpm / pitch
      3) Increase throttle.
      Decreasing Power
      1) Reduce throttle
      2) Reduce prop rpm /pitch
      3) Reduce mixture.
      Again, of course do whatever you prefer / find easier, but if you want to be realistic, that’s the way you want to be operating the engine.
      Hope that helps clarify some more. All the best! : )

      In the sim yes, it’s essentially a battery switch. If I recall correctly though, in the real aircraft it is a switch to turn on the gear indication light (and a couple of other systems as well I believe, on the later MKs). The battery is always “ON” (unless disconnected by the ground crew). The switch is there, basically so you can turn off the light and stop it draining the battery. I guess it is designed like this so that you can’t forget to turn it on.

      You can either purchase it direct from the in-game Marketplace (probably the easiest option), or purchase it from the FlyingIron website. I’m not familiar with the Microsoft Store, but if you’re using the Steam version of the sim, you will need to purchase Steam credits and then buy the product using those (the process is more or less automated for you).

      Yes, very valid criticism. Unfortunately it’s the zoom level the sim defaults to, hence why many videos are filmed this way I suppose. I have tried playing around with the zoom a bit, I found that when zooming in, the aspect still doesn’t look quite right then with regards to the terrain. It’s also a pain having to reset the zoom every time you change cameras. I will have another look into it though, I’m sure there’s some guidance available online.

    Great review as ever. You picked up the inaccurate modelling of the P8 compass in your previous review. Now that I 've had a chance to "fly" the simulation, I've a couple of additional comments. The Merlin engine response is a bit slow judging by the boost gauge. The Spit is sensitive in pitch but I believe FlyingIron have overdone it. I found the aircraft to be dynamically unstable, which isn't realistic. It can be solved by reducing sensitivity on the controls menu. Other than that, the modelling is superb, especially the textures. The other offerings will have to be very good to beat this one.

      Thanks very much and thank you for the info! Interesting to learn a little bit more about how she stacks up vs the real thing.
      As I say, I saw this product more as a Spitfire “experience”, than a Spitfire simulation. Visually it’s just stunning and it does a great job (I think) of conveying the overall feel of the aircraft, even if it isn’t bang on the numbers. I’m hoping we’ll continue to see updates from the developers, as there are a few little areas I’d like to see polished. I know their X-Plane model is very highly regarded and purports to operate within 5% of the real aircrafts numbers. Once again though, I just think it’s great fun more than anything.
      I’m glad it wasn’t just me noticing the P8. It was one of those things where I knew it wasn’t right, but I still had this tiny nagging doubt that maybe I’ve simply misunderstood how it works after all these years haha.
      As you say, a very solid offering and one that I think sets a new benchmark for MSFS addons to meet.

      The prices on their website are actually AUD (just in case you weren’t aware - I wasn’t initially), so it’s actually closer to $27 USD. Is it worth it? That’s very much up to the individual, but I’m very happy with it at that price. Been flying it almost every day since I picked it up and I’m really enjoying my time in it. Sure you won’t get full utility out of it (no combat), but I prefer taking in the scenery anyway personally. I believe the Spit in IL2 is pretty good and you can pick that up fairly cheaply when it’s on sale, if you’d rather have the combat option.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      I’m fairly sure these will be true airspeeds then Jesse. Altitude won’t make much difference to indicated airspeed, all things being equal (well, if anything aircraft max IAS will be reduced at high altitude as Mach effects start to kick in). True airspeed on the other hand will increase as the aircraft climbs. At 15,000ft, you would expect roughly an extra 30% on top of IAS so about 420kts TAS, if the aircraft is doing 320kts IAS.
      I did have a very quick look online, seems the maximum TAS for the MKIX was around 380kts at 15,000ft. So the Flying Iron Spit seems about right based on that.

    Very well done videos, but you tend to be up too close to the aircraft on every external pic of it and it distorts the actual dimensions of the plane. Would be nice if you could include some views of the aircraft that are not always, 'magnifying glass" close and filling the entire screen from edge to edge. You can't get a feel for the real dimensions of the aircraft when it's always distorted in those close ups.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  3 роки тому

      Thank you very much, glad you’re enjoying the videos!
      I certainly take your point, I think it’s a little trickier than that though: I don’t think it’s so much the proximity, as it is the zoom. By default MSFS’s zoom seems to be too far out and creates a bit of a fish eye effect. I have tried different zoom settings, but I’ve yet to find something I’m totally happy with and so tend to leave it in the default (so that at least everything is consistent). I have to say I do enjoy my close up angles though yes (clearly haha). I find it more aesthetically pleasing and think it gives more of an impression of size; rather than being zoomed out, where the aircraft starts to look a bit like a toy (to me). Just a personal preference / aesthetic choice I suppose.
      I certainly appreciate the feedback though and will look into the zoom settings once again.

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations I really enjoy your videos. You're very thorough and provide very helpful critiques of the aircraft you review. I bought both the FG-1D Corsair and the Spitfire based on your reviews. They were spot on. Both aircraft are superb.
      Perhaps it's not your "zoom" settings, but your resolution setting? Several resolution settings "stretch / distort" the aircraft. For a 16:9 screen, you need a `1.77 aspect ratio for everything to be at proper, accurate proportion. For instance, 1920 X 1080 gives you a 1.77 aspect ratio when you divide the smaller number into the bigger one. Native 4k also provides a 1.77 aspect ratio. Some resolutions in between will distort / stretch the aircraft away from its proper proportions.
      In any case. You put a great deal of time and effort into your videos. That is readily apparent in the quality of them. You are my go to guy for any new MSFS airplane reviews. Keep up the outstanding work. And thank you.

      I certainly want to / try to make the highest quality content that I can, so I really appreciate any constructive feedback, thanks! As I say though, I’d be reticent to give up the closeup angles etc, I feel it’s part of the channels “style” / identity now. If I can get rid of the distortion, without giving up the aesthetic, I’d be more than happy to do so though.

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations I used 1080 for FS too, before getting a 3090 card. I think the programmed / fixed external views tend to look "fisheye / distorted" more than a free moving external view. I have screen shots that have the plane close up while still being perfectly in proper proportion. You can use and map free moving external views to your hat switch and they don't do the "fisheye" thing like the fixed point external cam views do. Using the drone can also allow you to adjust an external view in "follow mode" that doesn't distort the aircraft's proper proportions.
      I can't attach photo's here to show you how I get very close up with no distortion or I'd include some. Try using external views that are not fixed views and adjust your distance on the free view external cam with zoom.
      for me, that's the scroll wheel on my mouse.
      Everyone likes what they do. It's your channel and you like views that are too close up and distorted for my taste, but they are YOUR videos and should be how YOU prefer them.
