- Something that has been a bit of an annoyance since we've moved house is the back gate. Mrs Hakes has become incredibly annoyed with the back gate banging. It slams so hard and makes a really annoying bang when it's left to close by itself. We were saying that it would be good if we invented a product to 'soft close' a gate.
Turns out - that product exists and it's here - amzn.to/3l2ZyRI
Can this £50ish device help our banging woes? Well watch the video and find out!

I have a 25 year old western red cedar fence and I just installed this think on my gate. What a relief. I just hope it survives -30c Canadian winters. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Extremely helpful video, thanks so much!
You’re welcome! Hope you’ve given it a like and subscribed 🙏
Good video, could do with one of these myself actually
The weird end screws are “self drilling”, used for metal
🤣🤣
If this not get many klicks we can officially say that garden gate closers do not sell on youtube.
Those self tapping screws are for metal fencing, you wouldn't normally use them on timber. I suspect the roller will eventually come off, but it's no big problem.just replace the screw with something like a 4.5mm x 50, and you will be good to go 👍
Ahhhh that makes sense.. will replace it
Nice video Kip. I like the device as it would stop banging. But it seems like the latch doesn't quite engage. Would this device stop the gate being blown by the wind if not on a latch?
It would engage if you adjusted it to close a little quicker, however even if you didn’t, I’ve not noticed it being blown open, largely because the wind doesn’t have enough force against the mechanism
These things work great but only open 90 degrees. Need them to open at least 120 degrees
Hi we have invested in one of these. It says 'distance from face of post to centre of hinge must be no greater than 6 mm' in the diagram it points that the bracket should be below the hinge. In your video you have it the middle. In your opinion what does this mean?
I believe they mean that the hinge shouldn’t be more than 6mm from the face of the post, if it’s too far away from where the gate pivots then it won’t work properly. Where I’ve put mine works beautifully - it doesn’t need to be physically close to either of the hinges. :)
Hi. Just what I want. But I read on the amazon reviews that they only last a year.
How is yours going, is it still working?
Thanks dave
Oh yeah.. it’s used several times a day and still going strong xx
Trying to find something for my fence gate which this particular closer doesn't fit
Sorry can’t help
If the wind pushes the gate closed does the device also regulate the speed of closure?
Yes!!
Thanks!
How can I find this item??? Thank you :)
The link is in the video description fella
I like the device… but £50 quid. lol maybe I’m a cheapskate.
I agree, it’s expensive, but it’s a mechanical device
designed to be out in all weather. As they say, buy cheap, buy twice. We’ll see how it goes!
Or you could have a gas strut closer for £120. 🤔
@@markrainford1219 okay… point taken. 😉👍
Haha, glad I wasn't the only one.. "relatively inexpensive... £50".. say whaaaat??
50 pounds heavy as fk
£70+ now
