    Some of the comments on here are a disgrace. Honestly, some people can do nothing but complain and try to find fault.
    I bought a gate spring on eBay that didn't come with instructions. Having never even looked at a gate spring before I just assumed that the spring would 'pull' the gate closed. I couldn't get it to work. I had no clue what the two tension plugs were in the pack but after seeing your video it all made sense.
    Thanks so much for taking the time to put that together. My gate now closes perfectly.

      Awesome. Sometimes you just need a little UA-cam to get it all done. And for the haters... That's ok too because everyone on my channel gets to say their mind. You don't have to take their advice, but it's a different view. Thanks for watching and good luck.

      Donovan Harvey You’re very welcome. But to be fair to the company that made the gate spring, the instructions are only on paper. And that’s very difficult to translate. Obviously tour for me anyway the video is so much better. Because it actually shows visually what’s going on. Don’t give the instructions to much blame, and don’t give me too much credit ha ha. Have a great day thanks for watching all my videos Jeff.

    I figured out that you can put the spring on either side, but depending on which way you want the spring to pull or push you have to turn the tension screw clockwise to push & counter clockwise to pull.

    Thanks for the informative vid, I've just installed one myself with less than spectacular results "Closure" wise, I had no clue about pre-tensioning the spring after fitting but my device is slightly different in so far as it has a plate to lock it in position but there were no instructions with it so I'm clueless at the moment:-(

    It wasn't clear but it looked like the way you installed the spring that the gate opening action was 'unwinding' the spring from it's neutral position rather than 'winding' it. I think it may work better winding, it's something to beware of when fitting anyway (switch top to bottom if it's unwinding).

  • @jeffmaggie
    @jeffmaggie  11 років тому +6

    There is no correct side. Iv'e seen gate springs on both sides that work fine. It's whatever looks and works best. If it doesn't look or feel right, switch it around. The key is to make it blend in and not be noticeable - else make it stand out and highlight it as an important piece of hardware. Thanks for watching and the comment.

    Just installed one of these for the first time...the instructions from the manufacturer( Stanley) of one of the 11" springs( PN76-0866) specifically states that the spring be installed on the inside of the gate, not the outside.
    I guess where the confusion arises, is because you imagine the spring as being pulled so that "a spring" naturally contracts pulling the gate shut so putting the spring on the inside of the gate almost doesn't make sense.
    Actually, what you have to imagine is the spring being really stiff so that when the spring is bent sideways, the spring naturally wants to straighten out so this means that the spring is not contracting to close the gate, but rather pushing the gate closed as the spring straightens out.

    The spring is on the correct side, the spring does not pull the gate closed, as the gate opens the spring turns and tensions then the potential energy stored in the spring closes the gate as the spring tries to return to its normal position.

      Your video was interesting to watch. I don't know yet about which side the spring goes and there seems to be some disagreement but I'll find out today because I have a spring to fit.
      However I did notice your watch is on the wrong wrist. In England it's the left hand for boys and right for girls. 😁

    Having the spring work through compression (as here) rather than tension seems a bit counter-intuitive, but it clearly works!! However: what if the gate is open only a few inches - does the spring get sufficiently compressed to store enough potential energy to get the gate moving? It looks a pretty heavy gate - a lot of inertia to overcome.

    I had one of these welded on my fence today but I noticed you said it dosent work well if its windy outside, so I was wondering should I add a second one for back up? or a self closing door hinge to increase the tension? my gate is metal, way smaller and lighter than yours, it also has gaps in between. I was thinking of instead of having the second one welded on i could just use quick steel or some other kind of metal epoxy or gorilla glue since its only a backup.

    • @jeffmaggie
      @jeffmaggie  9 років тому

      You shouldn't need a 2nd one for a backup. See if you can increase the tension on the one you already have, else if you can buy a small one and install it off the the side. Photos would be better to answer this, but that's my guess. Thanks for watching all my videos. Jeff

    you would think so, but no. you want it where it's not seen from the street view. the torsioning you do to it and the pin you insert into the top of it creates the tension

    What would you suggest for a gate that needs to open and automatically close from both sides, as in a driveway gate that one can nudge open with the bumper of a car entering and exiting? Great video!

    • @jeffmaggie
      @jeffmaggie  9 років тому +1

      +Paul Barlow I'd suggest an automatic electric gate opener. This only works manually with a stop on one side. Otherwise the tension would cause it to swing past close and open on the other side.

      Yes, you can. That's because attention at the bottom of the cake should be the same as attention of the top of the gate. @jeffmaggie  Рік тому

      Yes, you are correct. That’s our Amazon parrot. He is a blue front. And he’s 16 years old. We take him everywhere. He goes with us to the mall, to the supermarket, on walks, in the backyard, to the beach,. Pretty much anywhere we go that has available shade. And yes, if you’re wondering if he flies away? He does not fly away because we clip his wings just enough so he can’t get any lift. Lotta people don’t think this is right. And I agree with them. They shouldn’t get birds and they shouldn’t clip their wings. But you got to ask the question the people that don’t want to clip birds wings, would they be comfortable taking their goldfish down to the lake and letting it out of the bowl and expecting it to come back? No. So anyway, thank you for watching my video and hope you get a chance to see my other videos too. Some of them are goofy, but some of them are well with watching. Thanks for leaving to come and have a good day. Jeff.

    If this is a torsion spring then shouldn’t the upper attachment also be aligned with the spring and not vertically with the post.
