    Single engine Airplanes are a pilots fantasy come true. These airplanes listed have been in certification process for years now, and chances are they will finally be released to the market sometime this year. I am personally excited about the pipistrel panthera airplane because it is a true ground breaker with its speak looks and flight characteristics.
    Each of the airplane listed may have the price and performance data change when they are officially launched but these are the numbers we have for now. Below are the stats for each plane
    Flight Design C4: A four seater light airplane from Germany Flight Design, which also has the number one selling light sport aircraft in the world, The Flight design ctls.
    Engine: Continental IO 360 180HP
    Cruise speed:145Kts
    Stall speed: 50kts
    Fuel consumption: 6-8gal/hr
    Price: $250,000
    VL3 Evolution by JMB: claims to be the fastest ultra light airplane in the world. It is fast but def not the fastest. The evolution is a sweet design from the Czech republic that is set to launch in the United states as an experimental airplane.
    Engine: Rotax 912 or 914
    Cruise speed: 145kts
    Stall speed: 29kts
    Fuel consumption: 5 gal/hr
    Price: $150,000
    Pipistrel Panthera - A true four seater from pipistrel that is also fuel efficient. The panthera project has been delayed a bit due to issues with the original IO 390 engine that didn’t pass certification. Now Pipistrel plans to fit the panthers airplane with a new bigger engine the IO 540.
    Engine: Lycoming IO-540
    Cruise speed: 200kts
    Stall speed: 60kts
    Fuel consumption: 10 gal/hr
    Price: $500,000
    Diamond DA50: The DA50 is Diamondstar efforts to build an airplane that seats 5-7 people comfortably. The project has been coming up for years and it looks like the Diamond DA50 will be certified sometime this year. Last year Diamond released the big twin engine airplane the DA62
    Engine: Multiple engine output options
    Cruise speed: 173kts
    Stall speed: N/A
    Fuel consumption: N/A
    Price: $528,000
    Icon A5: The icon A5 is a really nice light airplane with smooth design and decent performance. The A5 though has had its shares of bad media and crashes. Currently the airplane has delays in production and it is overpriced at $389,000 in my opinion.
    Engine: Rotax 912
    Cruise speed: 85kts
    Stall speed: 30kts
    Fuel consumption: 4 gals/hr
    Price: $389,000

    Since this video I've looked into the Pipestrel Panthera since it got my attention. Mike stated in the video already that it had a Lycoming 390 but Lycoming wouldn't certify the engine for mogas (automotive gas) for cheaper operational costs. This resulted in Pipestrel adding the Lycoming 540 which was already certified for mogas. Hence the delay in certifing the aircraft but now that Pipestrel has gone the experimental route it's now available for purchase with a backlog order but still with the Lycoming 540 which produces 260 hp and exceeds the planes performance expectations. Thanks Mike for the introduction. Without your hard work I probably wouldn't have heard of Pipestrel for some time.

    Wow, if it takes so long and so much to get a little aircraft certified, just imagine how much went into certifying an A380 or a 747.
    Thanks for another awesome video Mike.

    I'll be interested in seeing the DA50. The only repair I ever had to make on the DA20's we had was a broken suction gauge. All the other work I had to do was just routine maintenance. I made the instructor do the work when he caused a student to barf all over the pilot's seat, and that's not technically a repair or maintenance.

    I love how the sport and LSA market has change aviation with so many aircraft now in production - one of them is the Lighting Build in Shelbyville TN at Arion aircraft - the builder has made changes along the way to improve the performance of the plane along with working with customers.
    The aircraft builder is strong with working with customers on witch engine's he would like to use with current builds flying with the Jabiru engine, the UL Power engine and the XP went to a much larger power plant and sets a little higher to clear the larger prop
    One builder is installing an electric motor in the lighting and one was just finished and ship to the builder who is going with a turbine engine for sleek litter two-seater
    The builder can offer you a turnkey aircraft with avionics of your choosing or fit the owner into a build ass program or at the factory along with building the aircraft to any point you wish and then ship it along with a price that not going to break the bank or install your custom-build avionics panel from an avionics builder of your picketing
    The owner gives flight training to new pilots or builds moving into the light sports car and if you look into past issures of kit-planes you find the lighting has made the cover more than once with his improvements were it looks like up to 5 engines could be built on the aircraft with the flight test of the Electrail and turbine engines .
    Arion has all so taken over building the Jabiru aircraft in Shelbyville TN as well and has built more that one LSA or sports aircraft for customers from fishing up an RV-10 to other metal aircraft as well. and install Garmin, Dyon,Grt, VP-X and even AC in one aircraft but remember when installing things like AC were the compress is not on the engine these add cost and work as well
    The builder is somewhat free to lay out the panel and place the switches were he would like them
    You have to love how the Sport and LSA world has change aviation as so many good ideas from pilots, builders and tech.s have put some of the new ideas into the air from the small LSA were the top speed is 55 knots to the 4 place multi-engine aircraft
    thanks for posting

    Good job gathering those planes, you should look into the Van's RV planes too especially the RV-10. It is Expermental but lots of builders are coming up with designes that is very competitive to SR-22. It is true 4 seater with performance and range. Im in Socal too and building one of those, if you are interested I will be glad to give you a tour.

    Pipistrel had to move away from the IO-390 for the certified version because they want the ability to burn mogas. Lycoming won't certify the IO-390 for mogas, but the IO-540-V is already mogas certified.

    Very interesting news, thanks. Any chance you know why some small planes have only two propellars while have 3 or 4?

    • @mojogrip
      @mojogrip  6 років тому +1

      The aircraft propeller is technically part of the engine or part of the performance profile of the plane. 2 blades or 3 blades can make a difference in how fast an aircraft flies or how fast it climbs. 2-3 blade propellers are the typical standard for piston engine small planes. A small plane fitted with a turbo prop or jet engine, generally has at least 4 blades.

    I just found your channel this evening. Really great content. I have subbed. Have you heard of the AirCam? It is a low and slow, open cockpit, twin pusher rotax powered experimental. The awesome thing about it is that it will take off single engine, loaded, even on floats. This adds significant safety. I was intrigued from the first time I saw it ou UA-cam. Check it out if you haven't already. I would be interested to hear your opinion of it.

    Enjoying all the air plane videos i have a question or two
    What are your plans for you license?
    Did you ever consider buying into a plane during your training? Seems as though for time building that is a good route to go

    • @mojogrip
      @mojogrip  6 років тому +1

      Get IFR certification and fly in my own plane. No I didn't consider buying into a plane, mainly because my stay in CA where I trained was temporary. That said, I should have considered buying a Cessna 150 though now looking back at how much I spent to get my PPL.

    What is the reason for these type of planes having the propeller in the front and not in the back?
    It would seem to me that the back is a more efficient place to put the propeller.

    Those are good if you looking for a good two seeter the Lighting build by Arion aircraft in Shelbyville TN can offer a two seater with a range of engine like the Jabiru, UL power or the 0 -320 on the cover of Kit Planes April 2015 and came in at 156 knots at 75% power at 7500 feet.
    The aircraft seems to adapt well to more that one type engine as two customers are changing things one is using the Lighting aircraft with a new Electrical motor call the Sun flyer, but double check the name and one customer is installing a small turbine in the lighting airframe
    The Airframe is quite eased to work with when it comes to laying out the panel for aircraft system switches and avionics as well one customer went with the 0-320 and the 28 Volt alternator and install Air-condition with all the parts inside the aircraft so no real drag and with power so spare it possible the AC could be used on climb out with no open door causing drag
    Many of the lightings have sold at 75 to 150 K depending on the avionics and advanced systems the customer is looking for the aircraft with the UL engine can be run through a muffler system and drop the noise way down making it a good aircraft to flower some smuggle aircraft, or possibly not notice by ground crews while videoing the place
    The avionics systems like the G3X single or dual screen and GTN 650 fit right in and there is lots of room just under the baggle floor for remote avionics like the GDL 39 or GTX 23 transponder or Com 2 or the new P25 tracking radio system all police units are changing over to fo betters service or even a remote HF system could be install as well.
    The floor pop's up with no space tools and the avionics are ease to service or upgrade later in its life and the pass through to the engine s shot with the EMS located just aft of the pilots EFIS display
    Theirs lots of good kits and builders that can produce a turnkey aircraft or help the builder from unpacking it to doing part of the work in a builder Assist
    To me, those like many are good aircraft but you have to factor in lots of things like Cost to build that include all the aircraft extrical like AC, inter lighting, back up systems use Circut Breakers or go with a VPX system and the Avionics you pick as well
    with many of the EFIS having a video input and the very small video units its possible to see what's above you and behind you as well and even install a sold state recording unit like in police cars for a small cost and truth is its possible to have one or two video units in the engine bay f they can take the heat
    And were and how are going to fly it long cross country or shot flights, grass strip, and backcountry flying or major airports for it's possible to have a new aircraft for the price of an SUV or spend a little more and have avionics like some of the fighters have or had in the past
    There's lots of fine aircraft nowadays and many like the lighting have a track record you can look at and get sold answers to good questions and many builds like Arion in Shelbyville Tn can build more that one tipe of aircraft The Lighting is Arion aircraft but they have taken over Building The Jabiru and build many other types of aircraft and install engines like the UL, Rotex, Jabiru and the O-320 and if the turbine works well it possible they could offer that as well
    Arion is a small Mom & Pop type business with to large hangers with l engine shop along with others things as well so take a good look around for the LSA world has open the doors to lots of new ideas and shops as well

    The Icon should not be in this comparison, as it's an amphibian trailer-able aircraft, giving it versatility as well as limitations that the others don't have. My concern about this aircraft is that it's marketed in such a way to attract those with flippant attitudes and I wouldn't be surprised to see more accidents like have occurred already.

    The VL3 does have a slight resemblance the Lancairs but she's almost a dead ringer for the WT9 Dynamic and a lot like the Sling...all from the same country, it seems designers in Czechoslovakia all hang out at the same pub. Why is there such a strong trend towards composites? In the flying and maintenance communities metal airees are still highly valued and often preferred, I would have loved there to see more innovations in metal aeronautical structures in 2018 and to have seen less rehashes of old designs and copies of existing designs - nothing really revolutionary has come off the drawing boards in light aviation in decades, at least not since Rutan and the first attempts at electric, it does seem to be getting a little stale.

      The Icon is a flying jetski - a weekend toy evidently for the ultra rich, not a hard working, cross country, practical airplane like most of the others here.

    I agree with all of the planes chosen- EXCEPT the Icon. Not for it's well highlighted crashes & deathes (they do reflect the why tho), but, instead- for it's general lack of airworthiness. All of the other listed & detailed aircraft have outstanding performance envelopes- with fabulous stall characteristics- not the Icon A5. It's: underpowered, overweight, not very aerodynamic, mushy in all modes- not very clear in any dynamic. For an experienced pilot- with lots of various craft & performance envelopes- it's fine. A NEW pilot, with limited experience- not so much. Not enough experience to know its mushy limitations. So, it's dangerous.

      Agree...Icon is like the Blinged Out Harley Fat Boy of the bunch, Overpriced, Underpowered, Poor Performance but lots of Bling...caching! And they market it as a "Jet Ski" on wings...ie, for the folks with more Dollars than Sense. It is certainly an Airworthy Aircraft, and I'd love to have one, but not at that price never...no matter how many bucks I had. If I won the lottery I'd choose nearly Any Other airplane in that price point before the Icon.

    • @DCGULL01
      @DCGULL01 6 років тому

      Agreed. There are excellent planes out there, great trainers AND great high performance rides. But, they will tell you when you are hitting the wall. I sense that the Icon A5 is always close to the edge of the envelope. With it's mono float punching a big, sloppy hole through the air, not allowing much of that "feeling of lightness'...

    I recall my mom left home for a few days as she was extremely mad at my father for buying and airplane which I guess blew the budget back in1969 - that airplane was a Cub for a couple thousand dollars ..admittedly this no comparison of a J3 to these planes but the $$$ of flying today boggles my mind

  • @MrJimbok1

    Price wise isn't it more appropriate to compare it to other light seaplanes, such as SeaRey. But the accidents have probably raised their product liability insurance costs drastically.

    I’m on the fence about the gear …. Is the gain with retractable enough to warrant ? Lot can go wrong there which leads to total devastation and loss…. Human error factors also,,,, forget,? Gear can be the life/death in a crash …they absorb a lot of impact force

    A plane is quite simple so I can't help think that the plane industry is missing very obvious opportunity to do a cost optimized design.
    They all seem to just design by intuition and then the price lands on whatever they can muster. Rather than a disciplined engineering approach asking what is the simplest way to make it fly and well.

    The big breakthrough is on light efficient engines for planes. The heavy clunkers from the 1950s are still dominant Just because they are "reliable" . They actually are not "reliable" they are just well known because the've been around forever. So the whole world knows about an IO 360/450

    Mike, what is the best deal on a plane with lavatory? Jet, turbo prop or whatever.

    • @mojogrip
      @mojogrip  6 років тому

      I don't know what the best deal is because any aircraft you get will be base on your mission. Some of the aircraft here like the phenom 100 or Honda Jet have lavatory on board ua-cam.com/video/ZkOkLCnsT90/v-deo.html

      MojoGrip ok. I ask because I noticed that when anyone does a review of a plane the issue of a bathroom is a non event. But when I consider a plane I think it’s important if you are gonna be airborne for a couple of hours or more, and as I get older I worry about that. Maybe an ascending price short list of new or modern planes with lavatories would be a good idea for a video. ?

    Id stick to the lycoming/continental IO engine variants. Rotax just feels so uninspired and restrained, also parts and maintenance isn’t as backed and proven over time as the traditional IO. Some parts of the rotax just feels chintzy where you’d expect some quality.

    Your assessment of the A5 is made as if the plane was made for people like you. If you don’t understand the target buyer, you can’t give it its proper value. I’m not saying the current price is fair, but you didn’t mention many interesting features the A5 has. Water and land, regular gasoline, car panel, no stall wing design, parachute, stall gauge, open-window flight, folding wings (but this was shown). What is there in its category with similar capabilities? Make a list of those for 2018 and it’s value, even if still a little higher than it should, will start to make sense, or get closer to that.

  • @kevin1873
    @kevin1873 2 роки тому

    Unfortunately thanks to Covid, the prices of airplanes are out of control. You could buy a great low-time aircraft in 2018 for under $50,000. Now, the only thing you can get under $50,000 is a 70+-year-old aircraft in original condition at TBO that needs $150,000 worth of work. Those great $50,000 buys in 2018 are not $100,000-$150,000. It's freaking insane. GA isn't dying but it's almost too expensive to get into anymore.

    What restrictions are placed on the owner flying an experimental certified aircraft?

    • @mojogrip
      @mojogrip  6 років тому

      Eric S, the main limitation that stands out to me are: 1). You can't use experimental for commercial purposes aka flight schools, and 2). You have to your passengers know of the experimental nature of the aircraft. More information here www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/91.319
