You can get a special palette for them that is rough, and you rub the crayons on it and pick it up with a wet paint brush and use it like watercolor. They are meant to be used with water. Neocolor 1 is the one you use dry.
I forgot that having my birthday on a sunday also sort of means getting a DD video as a present! What an excellent way to end a lovely family birthday celebration :)

Not gonna lie, I loved the short moment at the dentist's office lmao
As for the dogs with jobs coloring book, I like the idea of the lineart being more textured. I feel like textured lineart can make it seem like the dogs are extra furry, and depending on the brush size it could come out somewhat smooth as well? Like the smaller it is, less texture is seen while the bigger it is, more texture is seen.
I'm excited for when the book comes out, I'm holding off on getting Steph's because I want to buy them together ^_^
I have to admit, hearing form you guys and also looking at steph's finished book, i am leaning more towards the textured look so far LOL
And the dentist totally lured us in to a false sense of security before dropping that bill on us LMAO
I was given a surprise bill at the dentist last time I went and I have still not recovered and been back. That was in 1998. No idea how to even find a dentist these days, the local online forums are full of people trying to find one with space…not NHS, just any space! There is a rumour that there is one an hour away who will take people but who is a really bad dentist. 🫣
I would guess the colors that don't seem to fit in each set are there for contrast. Because otherwise you have a lot of colors that are very similar. Either way, I adore Neocolors, and these sets (which I don't own) acquainted me with Beya Rebai who is the one who curated them. Her work is gorgeous!

the other day i learned, that dogs are colorblind. maybe this is one of the reasons adamo feels so connected to pooches.

That second tin is definitely a gorgeous palette, Prussian blue is my favorite color. I think the first set is intended for skin tones? If you look at it as a portrait set, the last two colors make a lot of sense.

The textured lines will work best I think. Because the drawings are more playful and not very detailed. I cannot wait for it to come out ❤ as a dog person myself it is the perfect theme 😊

Caran D'ache tend to be at the more expensive side of the market, so I would think that they are artist quality. These are ones I wouldn't mind having a go with because I like watercolour and water soluble art supplies in general. I remember at primary school (this one in the late 80's) one of my teachers had a lot of fancy art supplies in her class and one of the things we used were supplies like these. I liked using them - it would be nice to have a go at something like them again. (I doubt that they were Caran D'ache, though.)
I was super impressed with just how easily they reactivated with just a little water! Based on the feel alone i would be inclined to say theyre artist grade too~
I think a textured brush for inking would be really good! I’m so excited for the book!!!
I love neocolor 2s - they are really fun to use with water for backgrounds- I use them that way in coloring books often
Ooooo it would be so satisfying to see these in a background where you can lay down so much of them!!
For the lineart question, I think you should try different styles and see what works the best. Like which one makes the details look clearest and what is fun for you to do. But on the other hand, you could have varying line thicknesses. Like larger shapes with thicker lines and smaller shapes with thinner lines.

Loved the video this week guys! As for the lineart question for the coloring book, as someone with kind of shaky hands, thicker lines make it easier in a coloring book to not color outside the lines!

I think a mix of the lines, or halfsies, some with textured lines and some with smooth lil lines

To the Neocolor II: Yes, i just checked their website, the colors in the limited sets here are also included in the biggest set they have.
Also, i own the 40 piece set since 2018 and i LOVE them. I upgraded my set with 18 more colors since then from my local art store, because you also can buy the colors seperate. So you don't have to buy the bigger set, just upgrade little by little when you want to!
Can't wait to see what you make with those pretty colours❤ good question... I think both types of line art should work but a textured one would be a lot more playful😊

I like the idea of thick lines and a cartoony style for the Dogs With Jobs coloring book. I'd be cool with either textured or smooth lines but if you wanted to distinguish from Steph's somehow than smooth lines would be the way to go.
From looking at other colouring books and doing some research it looks like thick lines really lend themselves well to colouring books, the textured look too! O:

I'd go with textured lines since you said you're not feeling confident in your ink work, I think it'll lend itself better in this situation. But both styles will be good looking!

Hullo Guys, I have been using the Caran d’Ache products for years now but the Neocolor II’s are my favorite and I have purchased the basic 10 set for 20+ years! I love how they flow when adding water! They are simply the best crayons! Some people like the Neocolor 1’s more like a regular wax crayon. Just an added note, the second ad on your video was a very charming short movie “The spark tree” really quite amazing. Thank you for sharing your experience with these crayons a lovely video too! I am voting for smooth or fine line work.

I feel like a more textured brush would really suit the dogs with jobs style, because the concept is very cozy and dogs are fuzzy so a more texture line art would look cute I think :3
Though, it might also look really really cute if you lined smooth surfaces with a smooth brush and the doggies or other RUFFer (pun intended) surfaces with a textured brush, though that's probably quite a bit more effort
I was thinking a textured brush would help with the pooch fuzz as well! I'll be sure to try out both though just to be sure :D
I’d definitely prefer a textured lineart but I’m excited to colour it either way! Also I don’t know if you’re taking suggestions but an entomologist dog (the study of bugs) would be pretty cool.
Test all digital brushes, print samples. If there’s a brush hardness setting, 25% hardness setting seems to be a good balance.
If lines are not smooth enough, you can export high res images to Photoshop shop, run a Gaussian blur, then a curves adjustment layer to find the setting you like. Then set up an action to process all the images.
However, you do you, I like Steph’s coloring book.

I think textured line art would be great in Dogs With Jobs but honestly I'll be getting it regardless. I like the colours in the second tin best but I'm a sucker for shades of blue.
When I sharpen my neocolor 2s I save the crayon shavings and store them by color family (example I keep my orange, pinks, red shavings together) and keep them in lil mint tins.
And when I wanna use them I’ll sprinkle the shavings on a blank watercolor or mix media paper and spray them with water from a squirt/mist bottle to get some cool effects, or Ill take a pinch of the shaving and put them in a mixing palette well and add a drop of water on top and use it with a paint brush like paint, it’s a very fun lil art supply though a can feel on the pricey side, but my local art store has a stock of them where you can by them as singles, which makes it feel less intimidating to spend the coin😂

I think the outlines on your book could be a combination. The dogs could be chonky or textured, while the objects such as the car, or stand, etc., could be smooth.
Immediately after seeing the Graffiti artist pooch, I thought they could be drawing a head of a cat crossed out, and then thought that would also be cool for a pirate ship flag and Adam shows an adventurer doggo! Truly, great minds think alike haha
Also yes for the cigarette tins with words in them in school, and that was only about a decade and a half ago for me haha
And for the lineart of the colouring book, I think textured lineart would fit it better imo, smooth lineart tends to work well in colouring books for very finite repeating patterns but for full on scenes, a bit of texture can make a world of difference!

It’s okay Steph I don’t like the dentist either, had 8 teeth pulled in the past 2-3 years, having them pulled was cheaper than expensive surgery that might not work long term. 😅

@@DoodleDateTrue 😢, at my last dentist they were very snooty about my teeth like “ well we gotta take care of them and we should do root canals”, had one and it didnt save my tooth as a kid and was very painful/ they had to give me three shots. Plus explaining to them on how I grew up poor and a kid can’t afford going to the dentist and it’s not like I could of force my parents to pay such a large bill wasn’t gonna happen growing up went out one ear and the other. The new place I go to is way better since they actually understand low income people and their situations.

For Adam’s question I could decided easier if there were examples, would you be able to do the same picture with the 2 different line works to compare? I feel like textured sounds nicer but I can’t say for sure till I see it.

Need any emergency commishes for dentist? I've always had teeth problems so it's my soft spot. Barksey the graffiti artist! MERRY PIGMAS!!! I'd prefer textured lineart, it doesn't have to be too precise that way. Also pro hack for line-arting, if it looks too thin in some places, just duplicate the line art. it'll bold it up, and you can erase anything too bold on the top line art layer.
We might have to in December because thats when Steph's appointment is gonna be to get the "work" dont LOL
