I wouldn’t totally discount the grain free causing heart problems. I worked as a vet tech for several years and personally saw dogs that were on grain free diets come in with DCM and after we recommended switching to grain inclusive diets, they recovered. We worked with actual veterinary cardiologists and they saw the same results many times.

My dog has left ventricular disfunction (pre-DCM) and her internist, cardiologist and neurologist have all strongly recommended that we transition her from her current grain free diet to a grain-inclusive diet in order to see if the ventricular disfunction improves and to mitigate the risks for the surgery that she needs. I trust these specialists as well as her family veterinarian who all have much more knowledge on the subject than I do.

Hi Skyler. Thoughts on Organix Pristine kibble? Also, can you do a video on homemade dog food? Not necessarily raw diet. I’ve been making homemade and combining it with the Organix kibble. Mostly using a base of 3 pounds quality meat (usually organic ground turkey or beef and some kind of liver or organ meat), a couple of sweet potatoes, carrots, something green (spinach or kale), apple or blueberries, eggs, and a dollop of coconut oil. Oh, and chia seeds as my thickening agent. I’m feed 2 dogs (one small and one large) so I’m still adding the kibble to make it more economical. Anyway, a video on making a good quality homemade food would be awesome.

To put things into perspective, there are 70 million+ dogs in the USA alone, and if there was an inkling of concrete evidence that "grain-free foods are killing dogs", there would have been a massive voluntary recall by a plethora of brands by now. Thank you so much! I am actually working on a "Best Affordable Dog Food" video concept now! The biggest question is what do you consider budget friendly/affordable? With dog foods, many of the higher quality foods are more nutritionally dense than cheaper foods, meaning you food less of the higher quality foods. I always recommend feeding the highest quality food you can afford, while still being able to "add to". For example, if you can afford to buy an expensive bag of Carni4, but then can't afford canned food/raw food/cooked meat/etc to add to it, then I would rather see you buy the less expensive Nutrisource (or something similar) and still afford to add canned food/raw food/cooked meat/etc into the diet.

actually, grain free food IS linked to DCM. the fiber in legumes limits taurine absorption. legumes also contain very little methionine content, the amino acid required to make taurine. dogs cannot synthesize methionine and must get it from their diet. grains however DO contain a lot of methionine content which allows for ample taurine synthesis. that being said, not all dogs eating a grain free diet will develop DCM. genetics also play a major role, as well as size and health of the animal. I did my capstone on this topic and found a link between genetics, miRNA, and different nutrient values within the body. you are correct that grain free diets are not the solitary cause for DCM, but they can and DO play a major role in certain dogs developing it, so it cannot be said that grain free diets aren’t linked to DCM at all. there is also a taurine-deficient DCM in canines (specifically retrievers and spaniels) that is caused ONLY by taurine deficiency. some of these dogs will develop DCM even with a grain inclusive diet, they just have some other genetic or metabolic component contributing to their disease process, but in these breeds, eating a grain free diet 100% increases their risk of developing it. but only about 1-3% of the entire dog population will ever show signs of this specific disease, so, even though it’s the second most described heart disease in canines, not many will get it.

Yeah I did this thing where I subtracted number of cases based on breeds/ sizes that are predisposed to DCM or a taurine deficiency and the number of cases (just based on the fda report) went from 380 to 68 cases. While this isnt perfectly accurate I think It shows that just the diet really doesnt have as much effect as it seems

Have you encountered many dogs that are allergic to whole spelt or whole oats? Trying to stay with grain-inclusive kibble, but except for the first bowel movement of the day, dog's stool is usually semi-soft (first one is usually pretty solid). We've gone through numerous gran-inclusive dry foods, trying different grains, and we just started on one with the grains mentioned above, but dog's stool was definitely most firm when he was on grain-free kibble.

Sooo many comments and ideas! I would love a deep dive on Canine Caviar. I won’t feed my dog anything else, ever. The one thing I didn’t hear you talk about here was the difference between grains. There’s grain kibbles, and then there’s beneficial grain kibbles, and that’s where Canine Caviar comes in. Not many brands use pearl millet. And I’ve yet to see any others use ancient grain quinoa. But Canine Caviar does. It is probably the best “biologically appropriate” dog food on the market, and due to their processing, as close to raw as you can get.

We have a new 4 MO puppy and want to fed him the right diet from the start, as I am not convinced years of me feeding them improper kibble only diets has caused their health issues. I also was not aware of the link between grain-free/DVM until today as educated by my vet. There is no link, just may be an association. Feed high quality meat diet, if carb is low it is not an issue to use grain-free. Look for 80-85% meat kibble, the grains/grain-free will be max 20% which is low.

You reference a preference to wet/canned dog food over dry kibble for the added moisture content. What do you think about buying a quality kibble and then grinding it to powder and hydrating it per serving? My concerns about canned food were the cost difference and the potential additional ingredients or processing required to make a shelf stable wet mixture considering food borne bacteria might possibly be a greater risk in foods that are stored long term in a wet form. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi I just found your channel since I discovered dog food toppers last night. I was thinking dog food toppers would be a good option since my shih tzu does not usually want to eat his dry dog food which is grain free and from Nature's Recipes. When I first got him in 2014 I tried to do as much research as a I could about shih tzus and learned they tend to have allergies. This dog normally throws up or has runny poo after he eats wet food (cesar) or even healthy food like apples. I want him to be excited about his dog food or at least not go the entire day not wanting to eat, but as you said dry dog food is affordable and that's why I keep buying it. He likes when I put a little bit of the cheese and bacon flavor wrap a pill paste on his kibble, but I can't keep doing this every time. I feel bad because I don't know what to do as a dog owner that doesn't make a lot of money (part time retail associate about to become a full time student).
Edit: I forgot to add when I first got him I was feeding him "Blue Buffalo Freedom grain free with chicken peas and potatoes" and I recall he would get excited to eat that food, but the price was considerably high for the lbs compare to what I buy now.

We’re definitely on a budget so as much as I want the best, we can’t afford it. We definitely need to supplement with kibble . He doesn’t seem to enjoy it anyway though so we are using canned food and mixing it. I want to try making my own food to save some money, so do you recommend a certain ratio of meat to other ingredients? Specific types of protein? We’re going to work with our vet as well but it’s nice having other opinions!

Just started my overweight yellow lab on carna4 with ultra oil added and some soft treat sticks without chicken. The man at the pet food store helped me get started. He was concerned she might not like the taste of the oil but she loves it licks up every drop. Too soon to tell the outcome but she has been on pricey apoquel and I'd really like to free her of that prescription. I've done no allergy testing I'm not sure what all the licking and scratching is about but she's also doing what your dog is doing. I'm hoping this will give her relief. The pet store owner told me his dog was keeping him awake with the incessant licking and this brought a lot of Peace after about a month. Really looking forward to this working for her. If you can afford it, switch him over to Life's Abundance, Farmina, Origen, Nature's Instinct or Fromm Family and all supplement with raw a few times a week. Get a good pet fountain as well.
