Don’t get intimidated. Doing things like this daily/habitually, WILL improve your drawing ability. Think of any of your hobbies - you’re a lot better at it now than you were when you started. He doesn’t mention it here, but one way it’ll help is you’ll try drawing something and fail. That’s how we learn. As a person dealing with a lot of anxiety, this habit I started taking a few days ago after watching this video is quickly becoming one of the favourite parts of my day. Thank you so much for sharing this advice and your art. It's good to sit down a while and remember the little things are worth looking at.
Me and my friend (who has had to move countries for exchange) have been keeping connected with each other by sending each other our journalling everyday. This is going to be day 4, and we are loving it :)
I used to do art a lot before entering college, I lost my passion for it because I was drowning in Essay assignments. It's been 5 years since I last drew anything (apart from sketches, so using this method may help me finally get my spark back. It's very sad that my most loved passion just faded away over time like that... I really hope one day that I can call myself an artist again. Thanks for the video
You can respark it, don't worry! It does help to aim for small things, like quick sketches, or swatching, or making a pattern, or playing with only a few colors. Anything with a low threshold. Then your joy and inspiration will grow again. If not doing art stems from having too many things to do, then you might have more things to do than suits you. Then it can be really rewarding to see what you can do to simplify your life (e.g. do less, own less, skipping things that are less important to you, doing unpleasant tasks together with a friend so they are much more fun, etc).
uufff man drowning in schoolwork and not having time to draw/journal is SO REAL. im in the middle of that rn and its been pretty bad,, but school break is coming up, so i hope i can “respark” myself aswell :)
I'm a full time artist with the same problem which seems odd. But getting back to your own sketching habit has amazing benefits for your sense of well-being whoever you are. Good luck
This idea has been in my head for decades and I never felt 'allowed' to do it, for some reason I didn't know where and how to begin... Thank you for setting me free! I can just start now, with the help of your prompts :)
Me too. I've been journalling via words for years, but little sketches accompanying my pages have felt weird and unnecessary so far. Even though they were fun to do and could capture an emotion or a moment very well. I'm gonna feel more justified creating them from now on, too :)
How do you find the time to do this with a newborn? Any tips you can share? I'm due in November and am worried about losing what little time I have to play in my sketchbook.
you literally changed my life with this video. I used to always draw with an amount of perfection that made me go crazy and dislike drawing more and more but somehow your words made me change my perspective. I am not here to draw with perfection but to draw with emotions and fun. Thank you for that
I been doing this for a while and it’s addictive. Its like I get a rush to grab anything to draw on before the idea escapes my mind. Even if it’s scribble scrabble Lol
A dear client of mine gave me several of your books before she passed away recently. I love these books and even more now she's gone. They are reminders of her and our shared love of art and especially daily drawings. Thank you for all you do❤
Hello, I'm Ahn Mi-sun, 36 years old illustrator from Korea. I was happy to have a baby 8 years ago, but I lost a lot. I accidentally bought a book from my teacher at a bookstore. Since then, I've studied drawing for a few hours a day. Now my child is in school and working as an illustrator! I was really happy to know that algorithms led me to your videos. Thank you again! Thank you for finding my dream. I hope you always have a healthy and happy life!!☺☺
@@SketchBookSkool Oh! No, it meant that my child was 8 years old! I came across your book at a bookstore eight years ago and I became an illustrator while studying drawing! LOL😅
You have encouraged me to stop thinking about it and take action! I love drawing and writing, but the two never seem to meet. So I’m taking up your 7 day challenge. Thank you.
I always feel very liberated when I watch your videos. You inspire me to simply be creative. My art is not good not even reasonable but I’m not selling it and it makes me happy.
This video is perfectly timed, I've just started prepping a new travel sketchbook journal for my 7 day trip. I bought a concertina sketchbook to make things more interesting and fun.
Journaling, Art and Life all at once! ❤ No pretences just plain everyday stuff framed in shapes and emotions that underline the value and reality of our simple days. The bonus of keeping anxiety at bay too 😅 Can't recommend this enough. Thank you!
Esto me recuerda cuando era pequeña cuando salía de casa y siempre dibujaba lo que veía. Me encanta el mero hecho de que grabes cualquier evento de tu día sin hacer dibujos perfectos. Sólo tú y tu diario.
As a designer, I have always drawn; I never go anywhere without my sketchbook and pencil. Definitely consider this weekly drawing suggestion: draw, and never stop drawing.
This is a great idea Danny. I love this. I’ve been trying to do morning pages writing by Julia Cameron and would start and stop go back ended up trying to keep up with a drawing journal too and painting acrylic canvases. and I quit everything. Just too much. I needed to scale down and get into one habit first. And this idea might actually work better for me. Your idea is hitting me in the right creative place. I thank you.
I don’t usually comment at UA-cam videos or get inspired by them but this one really made me go back to journaling and drawing. BTW you keep saying this isn’t art, but it IS ART mister, and you’re good at it. 🙂
What a fantastic idea! A few years ago I went a little crazy with a big fat sketchbook I thought I loved I think I have like 10. But it’s not watercolor paper. Just multimedia. Now I know what to do with them! You are a peach.
Just want to say, when you said use pen, at first, I didn't dare try. Then I simply sketched the tea mug in front of me and it came out OK. Not the dimensions. Just the feel of it on paper. Hopefully, tomorrow I'll try the rest of the challenges.
Это настолько невероятно вдохновляет! Мне 27, я только недавно решила все же по-настоящему развивать свой талант к рисованию, и это видео на данный момент - лучшая мотивация! Спасибо вам! ❤
I’m recently going back to creative writing, and this was helpful because I’m using these exercises to sketch out my characters and stuff around me that I can add to my writing.
As a guy in his early twenties struggling to make sense of himself, exercises like this are so life-affirming - thank you for sharing - the world's a better place with this video
Ugh I love this art. I literally couldn’t do anything like this and would ruin a journal. I legitimately just don’t have this level of talent, but I appreciate that he does.
Today is my Day 1. I didn't follow the bfast as my 1st sketch instead I pause the video and draw you sir as how I saw you on my screen. I got excited so I jump right into the challenge immediately 😁 for Day2-7 I will follow the prompt. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea to us 💛 Love from 🇵🇭
Yours is the ONLY youtube channel I dont speed up! ( Usually to 1•5, sometimes even x 2! ) I love your art and I love to listen to your soothing voice while I watch. Beauty and meditation at the same time! Perfect!!!!
As a sketchbook addict, what I've found is that when I get a sketchbook that I don't like that much for whatever reason, the texture, the weight, etc... that I'm much more free in that book than one I love or that was expensive. I'm gonna finish it anyway because I hate to waste money but I'll experiment a lot more and I'm not upset if something doesn't come out "nice". Sketching and journals are not meant to be perfect or internet flip worthy. That's not their purpose but it is easy to get that into your head. So I'd say get yourself a cheap journal, from the dollar store even and go to town until you feel like you're ready for the nice journal. Perfect is the enemy of good and good is the enemy of getting started.
I love this so much!! I almost cried by how cute I found this video😂 I always wanted to sketch daily to relax my mind a bit but I never knew what to sketch, thank you for the suggestions!
Good Morning Danny I love your Videos, Massages, Drawings . Thank you soooooo much for All your work art and videos great pleasure Time and work! 😊I wish you very inspiring day.❤😊
Thankyou this is ideal for me as I have perfectionist tendencies but a rusty hand so need something like this to help me just DO without thinking too much 😊
Little, easy moments could be healthier and more enjoyable than huge ‘expensive’ ones. I have to remind myself often (as anxiety of missing out kicks in) that living a slow and pleasant life is OK. Journaling about it is an extra pleasure in that kind lifestyle. Thank you! I am a new subscriber!
Almost a year ago, i started a prompted gratitude journal. I bought 4 for the year. Even when i missed day i went back and thought ab9ut the day before and wrote a few words just so the day is complete. Every morning and everynight. I then started a simple prayer in the morning and at night and folded them up and put them in a tin can. And i've managed to do both for almost a year. I started in january in january.First will be a year
Thank you, Danny. It has been a long time. I joined you when Sketchbook Skool first started ages ago. I fell off the wagon since the start of the COVID saga. This challenge should help to rectify my sketchbook habit derailment.
i really love your art. Its the perfect balance, not too perfect, but still easy to see what it is. lovely colors and "feel" too. Spring this year, I really started journaling. Glueing stuff, drawing, writing everything. Its been really nice. Now im gonna try this.
At one time I did this and I love looking at the few books I’ve finished, But now it has morphed into mainly a do list and writing down the weather, but I have a new nice 9 x 12 sketchbook that I have been thinking about combining several elements of my life all in one book. For instance I have a separate little notebook for my prayer journal and I I need to start keeping it together with a journal and in my Bible study fellowship this year we are studying Revelation and I think I would like to make some notes about that. I’m always taking an online class and making notes on when I signed up and my password and what we did and I think that’s a good idea to just combine all of these things in one book and I might start this because I’m coming to the end of, a sketchbook that I’ve been keeping for several months. I may accept your challenge. I have a great event to add on Saturday -.a great grand is having a first birthday party and has taken a few steps but my entries always take longer than 15 minutes!!
Have you ever heard of “a period.” Thank you for sharing your experience, but your run-on sentences make your “Comment” difficult - and disagreeable - to read. I truly hope this helps.
I started sketching daily again like four months ago and it’s crazy how it has changed my perception of the world around me. I see so many things that are interesting and therefore very beautiful which flew right under my radar before. the ideas for the on week challenge are awesome, thanks for sharing. Twiglet is the cutest 🩷
I felt totally lost in my art for a while now, but I don't know how after that video, I guess the most comfort video i've ever seen, I started feeling better. A lot better. There's something about hearing the right words in the right time. Thank you.
I love this man. I’m currently at an art high school and I feel like I haven’t been able to think about drawing as a “chill” thing to do. But this video has actually made me excited about drawing, something I haven’t really felt in a while. Thank you! 🐞
you are my absolute favourite artist on this platform. thank you for inspiring me to get a sketchbook and to start drawing anything i want, even the most mundane things. i aspire to have journal pages as delightful as yours. they are wonderful.
You've no idea how much I needed this, I had sm ideas but your video helped me organize em and I really really loved your sketchbook it's just perfect thank you so much ❤
You may not consider your drawings as “great art,” but compared to my abilities, they’re museum pieces. I’ve been keeping journals for over 30 years and would love to add illustrations, but every time I try, the results embarrass me. (I also keep a dream journal that I’d like to illustrate, but again, my abilities preclude my even trying.) Any suggestion about getting over self-criticism?
Danny Gregory knows full well that his drawings are generally excellent...he's been at this forever. But what is so great is that he is fully aware that all of us, you and I and everyone else have the capacity to translate objects and ideas into drawing and that if we stay with it we will get the hang of it and it can be transformative! :)
Thank you for this beautiful video. It felt better and relaxing just watching.. I'm aan architect, mom of a small baby and sometimes I loose myself inside all the roles I need to fulfil. This is a perfect way to retake a habit that makes me happy. Thank you, wishing you the best. ❤
I've burnt myself out a bit recently trying to focus on studying the art fundamentals as if pushing myself to go back to school looking back i think doodling in class is one of the things that got me through school i really should bring that habit back, though instead i'd doodle while/after watching a video thank you for reminding me what made art so fun for me in the first place: to be able to just draw whatever i see or feel!
Hey Dan, I have been looking for a channel like yours for a while now and today I finally found it. I am so glad. Thank you for doing what you do and being here with us. Now gonna watch all your videos!!
Hi! I'm a bit of an audio enthusiast and noticed that your gate's threshold may be too high, the attack time may be too slow, and the release time too fast, which could be the reason for the audio dropouts in your voice during the video. This might be due to the gate or the mic cable itself. Just wanted to let you know! Great video otherwise, thank you!
Your videos certainly help me defeat the "blank page" of my sketchbook(s). I definitely gotta experiment more and, as you say, reconnect with myself and the process more than the result. Thanks!!
This is something I really should do...of course, I've been making excuses such as "I'm looking for the best sketchbook for what I want to do", or school is taking up too much of my time, I'll wait till the semester's over", and the number one excuse is "I'm just simply too tired and exhausted". I don't draw nearly enough these days...but then again, college IS keeping me busy (I'm a part-time college student in my late 40s...going to school for art!), I'm on the courses that are more homework and written work - I've already done most of my fun classes (drawing, painting, ceramics, etc.)
I don't know your story. You said that in your late 30s you started drawing again, something you didn't do since you were a child. Can you elaborate on that? Now you are a famous artist so it would be a powerful motivational story for those people who feel lost in their late 30s and they think it's too late to start something different.
Draw anything but from real life. Draw as you see them in front of you. Do not care that you are making “art”. But keep them up. People talk about “skill”. Skill is something you keep doing.
That's a great idea. I think it's also important to set personal challenges and overcome them. Each time we conquer one, we break our own limits. And, of course, we learn something new in the process
Thank you so much! This was just what i needed, an easy "quick" way of getting into my art without stepping into the studio, and keeping a consistancy in doing so!
Its the first video I watch of you. i used to draw nicely when I was a kid. Now, some decades forward, I feel triggered to attempt this week challenge, your kind, warm presence and speech, and your reasonable arguments of course, made me wanna try this.
This is so awesome for new and old artists. However good or bad you are at accessing emotions or drawing, its a reminder that there is significance in everything you do and it's worth celebrating in art. I'll definitely recommend this to my friends who don't think they have any reason to share their art.
I was so happy to see this video, I used to do all this but I had so much in my head that I had to be perfect and college doesn't give me time to do anything, now that I finally graduated and seeing this video I want to have an illustrated journal and draw free without the chains of being perfect, I want my art to mean something to me again.
I've spent a lot of time the past week sitting by my daughter, who was in the hospital. I began to draw her bed, the cords, the monitor, all those things that reminded me of the miracle of her healing. Drawing helped me stay calm and dwell in gratitude, not worry.

Then it can be really rewarding to see what you can do to simplify your life (e.g. do less, own less, skipping things that are less important to you, doing unpleasant tasks together with a friend so they are much more fun, etc).
uufff man drowning in schoolwork and not having time to draw/journal is SO REAL. im in the middle of that rn and its been pretty bad,,
but school break is coming up, so i hope i can “respark” myself aswell :)
I'm a full time artist with the same problem which seems odd. But getting back to your own sketching habit has amazing benefits for your sense of well-being whoever you are. Good luck
I only have a month until I can really leave school and start studying architecture or animation in college... if I'm lucky to go to a private one
This idea has been in my head for decades and I never felt 'allowed' to do it, for some reason I didn't know where and how to begin... Thank you for setting me free! I can just start now, with the help of your prompts :)
i know exactly what you mean
Me too. I've been journalling via words for years, but little sketches accompanying my pages have felt weird and unnecessary so far. Even though they were fun to do and could capture an emotion or a moment very well. I'm gonna feel more justified creating them from now on, too :)
What a coincidence...I just started illustrated journaling ever since I had my newborn ❤ I loved the tips and prompts
Thank you for that
Glad I could help!
"it's whatever you think mattered about today." Oh good, It's already done.
I had a small chuckle at this.
Thank you for all you do❤
I’m so glad!
I hope you always have a healthy and happy life!!☺☺
An 8 year old illustrator? Wow!!
@@SketchBookSkool Oh! No, it meant that my child was 8 years old! I came across your book at a bookstore eight years ago and I became an illustrator while studying drawing! LOL😅
Oh yes! Been doing the journal for years, best you can do for yourself. Thanks for your inspiration, it keeps me going.😊
Wonderful!
You have encouraged me to stop thinking about it and take action! I love drawing and writing, but the two never seem to meet. So I’m taking up your 7 day challenge. Thank you.
Go for it!
No pretences just plain everyday stuff framed in shapes and emotions that underline the value and reality of our simple days. The bonus of keeping anxiety at bay too 😅
Can't recommend this enough. Thank you!
Your sketchbooks are wonderful! Thanks for the inspiration.
Esto me recuerda cuando era pequeña cuando salía de casa y siempre dibujaba lo que veía. Me encanta el mero hecho de que grabes cualquier evento de tu día sin hacer dibujos perfectos. Sólo tú y tu diario.
Thank you!
Thank you!!
Best video on UA-cam. When everybody is *sketchbook-drawing addictid* nobody have time for war. Very easy an very cooool
I’m so glad you exist
As a designer, I have always drawn; I never go anywhere without my sketchbook and pencil. Definitely consider this weekly drawing suggestion: draw, and never stop drawing.
Your journal is a masterpiece in every sense of the world!
Sus ilustraciones son hermosas!
Intentaré seguir su consejo, sin pensar en la calidad de mis dibujos, simplemente pensar en las cosas que deja el día.
those type of journals are such sweet gems .
Yes but your drawings are so beautiful when I see your sketchbook !
Thank you so much 😀. Why the “but”?
@@SketchBookSkool I mean, to reach your level of drawing, it will take me some time 😄
You have been the teacher I always wished for. I'm super inspired and learning so much from you. Thank you so much for your kindness
I was actually doing this as a hobby. Then I stopped because I was too busy. I try to do it whenever I find time and it really feels my soul good.
You can do it!
Hi Donna!
Would.you mind sharing a bit more about your experience with all these tools?
Thank you😊
I don’t usually comment at UA-cam videos or get inspired by them but this one really made me go back to journaling and drawing. BTW you keep saying this isn’t art, but it IS ART mister, and you’re good at it. 🙂
I'm so glad you found it helpful. And you're right, it *is* art!
I’m recently going back to creative writing, and this was helpful because I’m using these exercises to sketch out my characters and stuff around me that I can add to my writing.
Super ideas for daily prompts, I started mine the 1st of Sept, what I'm decluttering everyday. 5 items, 5 minutes, then draw it.
@@theresapalmer7892 what a great idea
Excellent idea.
Brilliant idea.. two good habits in one
I feel so happy and productive just thinking about this habit .
At least I can say that I have not wasted 9:42 minutes of life.❤
As a guy in his early twenties struggling to make sense of himself, exercises like this are so life-affirming - thank you for sharing - the world's a better place with this video
Hang in there. Life changes. All wil be revealed and resolved.
This is the most comfortable and useful video that I've seen this year 😊
I am so glad you found it helpful!
Perfect!!!!
Wow, thank you!
Your sketching is beautiful. 🤩 This is where I’m stuck: I can’t ‘ruin’ the nice new journal until I’m completely ready.
😊I wish you very inspiring day.❤😊
You are very welcome!
I wrote down notes while watching this video and added simple sketches with my notes. It helps. 😊❤
Thankyou this is ideal for me as I have perfectionist tendencies but a rusty hand so need something like this to help me just DO without thinking too much 😊
I love this man. He has a magnificent artist-soul.
I started in january in january.First will be a year
Thank you! Perfect, I'll buy a sketchbook and start today!
As he kept flipping the page and talking i wanted to start drawing his face and writing about his inspirational video..
I felt totally lost in my art for a while now, but I don't know how after that video, I guess the most comfort video i've ever seen, I started feeling better. A lot better. There's something about hearing the right words in the right time. Thank you.
Perfect!!!
I love this man. I’m currently at an art high school and I feel like I haven’t been able to think about drawing as a “chill” thing to do. But this video has actually made me excited about drawing, something I haven’t really felt in a while. Thank you! 🐞
It's always good to have a fresh perspective.
What’s that pen you were using while drawing your pet? 👀🖊️
you are my absolute favourite artist on this platform. thank you for inspiring me to get a sketchbook and to start drawing anything i want, even the most mundane things. i aspire to have journal pages as delightful as yours. they are wonderful.
I accepted the challenge and completed my first drawing! 😊
Wonderful!
You've no idea how much I needed this, I had sm ideas but your video helped me organize em and I really really loved your sketchbook it's just perfect thank you so much ❤
This is breathtaking and inspirational, can't believe this is the first time I've heard about this 🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨🎨
Watching this reminded me how much I love discovering new things. Immersive Translate makes it even better.
Just go for it, we all have our own style. No one else need see what you do, never be embarrassed for trying something new as long as you enjoy it ❤
Danny Gregory knows full well that his drawings are generally excellent...he's been at this forever.
I remember making this when I was a kid. I didn't know it had a name like that. Thank you for sharing.
This is my first video from you and all I can say is Thank you ! Highly appreciated.
That’s awesome, welcome!
I've burnt myself out a bit recently trying to focus on studying the art fundamentals
as if pushing myself to go back to school
looking back i think doodling in class is one of the things that got me through school
i really should bring that habit back, though instead i'd doodle while/after watching a video
thank you for reminding me what made art so fun for me in the first place: to be able to just draw whatever i see or feel!
Hey Dan, I have been looking for a channel like yours for a while now and today I finally found it. I am so glad. Thank you for doing what you do and being here with us. Now gonna watch all your videos!!
Awesome! Glad you’re here. - Danny
What???
What a gift you have - the ability and skill in bringing your thoughts to life with pen and paper.
I don't know your story. You said that in your late 30s you started drawing again, something you didn't do since you were a child. Can you elaborate on that? Now you are a famous artist so it would be a powerful motivational story for those people who feel lost in their late 30s and they think it's too late to start something different.
He tells his story more in some other videos here I believe.
read his book Everyday Matters
Draw anything but from real life. Draw as you see them in front of you. Do not care that you are making “art”. But keep them up. People talk about “skill”. Skill is something you keep doing.
That's a great idea. I think it's also important to set personal challenges and overcome them. Each time we conquer one, we break our own limits. And, of course, we learn something new in the process
2:57 Oh. i disagree.
Me too.
@@SketchBookSkool Yeah, your stuff is 100% art and amazing.
Thank you so much! This was just what i needed, an easy "quick" way of getting into my art without stepping into the studio, and keeping a consistancy in doing so!
Glad it helped!
This is such a beautiful journal!
Its the first video I watch of you. i used to draw nicely when I was a kid. Now, some decades forward, I feel triggered to attempt this week challenge, your kind, warm presence and speech, and your reasonable arguments of course, made me wanna try this.
Welcome back!
This is so awesome for new and old artists. However good or bad you are at accessing emotions or drawing, its a reminder that there is significance in everything you do and it's worth celebrating in art. I'll definitely recommend this to my friends who don't think they have any reason to share their art.
This is so true and well-spoken. :) there's significance in everything that we do, if only we choose to see it and cherish it. Thank you.
Спасибо вам, за ваш труд и за то, что вернули мне душевное спокойствие. Благодарю вас от чистого сердца.
I was so happy to see this video, I used to do all this but I had so much in my head that I had to be perfect and college doesn't give me time to do anything, now that I finally graduated and seeing this video I want to have an illustrated journal and draw free without the chains of being perfect, I want my art to mean something to me again.
Your presence alone is so soothing :) Love this challenge, gonna try it out! Thank you
