If copying other art is training wheels, I feel like the bicycle itself is using reference and inspiration from other artists. Trying to do art without any influence from other artists or the world around you is like riding a bicycle without having a bike.
That's fantastic!!! what matters is that you have fun. 1 drawing, no matter how bad, is better than no drawings. give it a try and if you have any questions let me know!
This is such an important video! I feel seen and heard. Thank you so so much! I've been struggling with my creativity as an adult for decades and this video has given me hope and made it so simple and exciting again! For the first time in a long time I feel like my creative life is not unattainable. Thank you for the exercises. You make art so easy and approachable. You explain art so well! This is a blessing. Thank you so so much! Yay funsies!
You made my day!!! I myself have to remind myself to find joy in drawing. The pressure to improve and prove myself can be greater, and I fight against that every day. Funny enough, when I let go and just enjoy myself, better art comes out as a result!
Thank u for this video, Javi!! I've been unable to draw for a while now because I was putting too much preassure on myself, maybe it's time to go back to the start and enjoy creating art again
That's what artists don't tell you. We all started drawing badly, and even now we al have bad days where nothing we try works out. Just know that this is part of the process and that even a bad drawing leads to a better one.
What a fantastic video. You're kind and positive and though I do draw already, I feel lighter at the idea of just being happy that I drew at all - it's been a long time since I connected with that basic and important joy. Thank you!
I put that in the video because I need to remind myself to just have fun when drawing. Funny how it's easier to put pressure on ourselves than just having fun doing what we like.
I used to draw pretty well as a teenager and did the copy method, where I copied but changed something to add a little "me" into it. Then I stopped for years, and now, I'm trying to just enjoy drawing again, graphite, shading, nothing more. I planned a lot of drawing for 2025 and accidentally running into this video just made me want to stick to it. Thanks!
Your video came right on time. I just started "drawing everyday" two days ago. Somehow I already felt a slight anxiety about what to draw next. Your tips are incredibly encouraging.
Don’t focus on getting better. Remember your mission right now is to enjoy it and build a habit. Thats why drawing things that you find interesting is key!
Thanks for making this video! I recently got back into drawing again after many years and this video helped me figured out what to do. I appreciate the help!
thank you for this video. I tried to follow some tutorials online but I always end up with the same problem: they are boring. I can't keep drawing circles and cylinders forever, it simply takes the fun out of drawing. so thank you so much for this new perspective on how to start!
hahahah thank you so much! If you want to do some other line exercises you can try drawing hair as well, sometimes when shading hair you have to do a lot of lines and that's a pretty relaxing line exercise as well.
my 5 yearold son can copy anything he looks at really well. when i asked him how, he said he just looks at the lines and colours and not at the picture as awhole. his art is awesome.
I used to draw from Dragon Ball/Z as a teenager. Then I did TMNT a whole lot! But then I stopped in my late teens... Now, about 20 years later, I have a desire to get back into drawing as a hobby. This video is a Godsend! Thank you for explaining things in such simple terms!
I actually started relearning how to draw 2 weeks ago. The thing that drives me crazy is my line confidence. I'm going to stick with it I wonder what my art will look like in a year.
Just keep doing it! Don’t think to much about how each drawing looks. As Danny Gregory says, you are improving with each drawing, whether you realize it or not. Get as many “pencil miles” as you can and you’ll get that line confidence in no time!
@@hiddenrhythmsmusiccircles thanks, i'm going to start learning digital soon. I'm going to try and put some massive hours in to drawing in 2025. i need to see how far i can go!
Thank you so so much for your video !! The kindness, the wholesome positivity, it really put some warmth in my heart as someone who draws on and off for a few years, and want to take the whole path again, thanks to you I know have a simple but manageable plan !
@Javicandraw haha! Nah man you're producing content that's helping people. Hell I've been drawing for 2 years now and I still found this helpful. Thanks again, man.
That duck whistle thing got me thinking about a neat exercise. Draw some simple objects that are pretty simply shaped. Maybe one object is vaguely triangularly wedge shaped, maybe another is a cylinder, and another would be maybe box shaped or a flat rectangle like a phone. Once you get a few of these, practice drawing them from different angles. Now once you are comfortable drawing them from those angles, put them together on the page in a way that it implies a new more complex object. I was thinking about a few things that can be put together to make something like that duck whistle, but it is made up of several of the simpler objects. I think that this idea was inspired also in part by paintings of portraits but the faces are made up of smaller images of fruits and vegetables. These won't have to be as complicated, but I think it could be pretty useful, especially with understanding that larger complex objects are really just a bunch of smaller simpler objects placed right by each other and maybe modified a little to become something new.
I’m a copy artist I can’t draw from imagination (aphantasia) but I can copy an image or another work line for line with no grid or pencil or tracing straight in pen. Not seen many people do this as you say copying is taboo. Love this video good step by step process idea.
I have aphantasia too! And I'm pretty good at copying as well. I kinda hate it tho because I really do want to be creative and start making original art work. Can I see your art anywhere?
@@satrim_naaysI don’t have art on the internet unfortunately but for a reason, I’m not competing or comparing, my art is all just for me. You can be creative copying say you want to draw a caravan I google or Pinterest all the images of a caravan I like and make a visual collage of images, I then cut and crop all the images to make a single picture of what I want the caravan to look like I then draw that. Takes a bit of practise but I enjoy doing it.

I really want to follow the stylized path but i have heard so many times that fundamentals like anatomy and values are really important. Shall i pursue academic and stylized together? Will it affect my art journey in a negative or a positive way?
I've always wondered where, when, and who started the "never use references" lie, bc even as a youngin on the internet (I was born in '90) I was hearing that online and on online art communities like deviantart
There are so many good people and Teachers around me that i am perplexed what to choose, who to watch. Man like an Elephant Feast 🥧 🎂🍰 🍜 for an Ant 🐜 😂😂😂😂 Stylized and Funsies path
Overall a nice video to get people drawing, but I disagree with some things: - All types of drawings are based on reality - whether they look like like it or not. If you go into a "stylized" or "funzies" path, then it would mean that you eventually you would be stuck because you don't know what you are exactly doing or you would be just copying somebody's "style". Know the rules before you break them. - The best way to learn drawing is from real life objects or models. And if you don't have access to them, use photos. Unless you know an artist is really really good, copying from artists would also mean that you will copy their "mistakes" and how do you know what is correct or not if you just started drawing? That being said, some two most important skills are almost never mentioned: - Learn to be critical and self-evaluate. It never helps saying "this sucks" or "I will be do better next drawing" without evaluation. Try to find why your drawing works or doesn't work and you can improve from there. If you can't find why, try to find reading/video-material to what you think that might be wrong, whether it be colour values, anatomy, perspective, whatever. This is the most important skill to develop and can make you improve really fast. - Also something I never hear artist/tutorials say, but try to learn to really look at the real world with the knowledge you have (ust) learned. This is so valuable. For example, if you just learned something about shapes, try to look at the world and dissect it into shapes. So not just when you are drawing, but also when you are sitting in the bus, walking around on the streets, etc.
I have a question. Are there hybrids of these paths? I obviously do not know for certain, but it seems to me that there are Stylized artists that use an Academic approach or am I wrong? Like the way they shape their characters is very accurate to Reallife, but then they give them a more anime-like look?
Of course there are! I came up with the "3 paths" to simplify a way you can develop your art, but you artstyle will always be a mix of your influences-. I love comic books but studied fine arts and ended up drawing picture books. I'm a mix of the three myself!
