- I get tons of questions about the catfish reels I used and a couple of months ago I received some brand spanking new Abu Garcia 6500 Catfish Pro and 6500 Catfish Special Reels so I wanted to do a quick video to show off these new Abu Garcia Catfish Reels and talk about the comparable models to look at as well. These are both Made in Sweden reels!

My Dad had a reel repair business for over 40 years. He has always preached to me that no matter what you can’t go wrong with an Abu Garcia made in Sweden. This reel is made in Sweden. You get what you pay for. I repair my own reels as well and the parts for all Abu Garcia reels are reasonable and the same parts fit all models. These reels are also very easy to service and repair if you have just a small amount of mechanical ability. People that complain about a Abu made in Sweden can send me their reels even if they’re broken. I’ll gladly take them off their hands. The models with S, BCX, and even the orange Catfish Special are all made in Asia. I would stay away from these models. Aside from the anti reverse and drag, the Abu Garcia hasn’t changed much throughout the years. If it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it.

Just got 3 Catfish Pros and love them....smooth as can be.. Fishing time is hard to find, just go ahead and spend the money and forget about equipment failures . These reels are bulletproof!

I already use the 6500CP Black Rockets and I got the new 6500 Special about a month ago, have 2 Whisker Seeker 7'6" heavy action rods that need reels so I'll probably be ordering 2 of the newer 6500 CP models, I'm also running a couple Team Catfish baitcast'rs and a Penn Fathom 40LW that I am extremely happy with.

Is there a difference between a standard 6500 and a 6500 Catfish, besides the picture of a fish and 50 bucks more to pay?
Catfish Special is the same. Catfish Pro is upgraded

I will probably get a couple of the pros. Is that the whisker seeker braided line you have on them? If so how do you like it honestly? I was thinking of switching over from spiderwire but unsure how it preformed and how long it holds up. I get about 3 years on my 80lb spiderwire and seems to have the smallest diameter.

I just bought a catfish special 7000c3.. it’s junk. I don’t know if it’s defective or what, whines and grinds when you cast, you can feel it in the reel. Super weird and super disappointed.
Still out of stock at most distributors, just tried ordering 4 new reels today from Catfish Connection and Bottom Dwellers Tackle and they're out of nearly all Abu Garcia bait cast reels.

Question for you, just got my PR-6500BE in the mail today. My first Abu Garcia reel and large round baitcaster. Thanks to you I’m gonna try my hand at targeting large catfish! Either way I can’t figure out what that black numbered dial on the palm side spool tension knob is for? It’s numbered 0-9 and has a tiny black arm which allows me to rotate it 360 degrees. Any help would be appreciated!

Yes they stopped making the orange reels. This is not available in a 7000 model at this time.
What are the gear ratios for these?

I just got the 7000 series yesterday. It seems to have 2 dials unlike the 6500. Left and right. No idea why it has 2. Can anyone help with that?
The Pro has two dials.

Just purchaced 4 of the abu garcia pros. Im having a hard time figuring out what kind of fishing line to put on them and what pound test. I fish buggs island and the james River all the time. I've been big fan of the whisker seeker mono orange string.
I use 30 lb sunline with the catfish pro on a MH big cat fever rods. My leaders range in weight from 30lb-60lb
I wish the special had the same graphic I never cared for magnetic braking systems

I'm a southpaw and I can run these reels with no issues, if you want 1 I'd say pull the trigger and get 1, they're awesome reels.
Go get you a kastking Rover I just bought 2 of them the 60 model in left hand took them out and performed great and you can buy 2 of these for the cost of one Abu Garcia and some may say it's not as good but I'm telling you I'm a I long-time fisherman and believe in buying good stuff I'm so glad I got the kastking Rover reels gonna get 2 of the kjastking trolling reels now before they go up on the prices may get 2 more of the rivers also
6500 Pro Rocket BE comes in LH which us the same reel without the catfish on it.

Im gonna sub cuz im liking the content and all but can you do some reviews on some more budget friendly terms say some of the better reels for catfish that are $40-$100 range id love to have either of those reels but i have 3 boys that will be 10 3 and 2 so i just cant throw that much at a fishing reel!! Shadow Hunter check out the kastking rovers I just bought 2 of the 60 model left hand and tried them already you can buy 2 for the price of 1 Abu Garcia I'm a believer in getting really good equipment but these are excellent reels no joke fixing to buy 2 more and I'm also gonna pick up 4 kastking trolling reels before they go up excellent reels you won't regret buying them and nearly a twin to the Abu Garcia ambassador reels the rivers are check them out

Only question I ask is you paid over 600 dollars for a reel and don’t get me wrong I understand your a guide but the link you showed for the reels you have are over 600 bucks Hell I catch big cats on reels a lot cheaper I don’t make my living guiding but to me the best money spent is not on rods and reels it’s on your electronics and learn how to use them JMO
Those are third party sellers trying to capitalize on tackle shortage. Look it up on the Abu site.

@@Catfishedge on the new one? I don't see the button anywhere and it doesn't say anything about it having one on Abu Garcia's website. The pro has it. But that cost quite a bit more. My orange catfish specials have a clicker. Why make a new model then charge way more for a feature the old one had. Again I'm disappointed.
I really wanted to love that reel and I do, but its price point is to high! Its like women and their Gucci bags but for men. I'll be buying a
Piscifun® Salis X at $100 rather than paying Abu Garcia $300 for their name and pretty colors. And if you think the Abu Garcia is better, I say prove it!

So Abu Garcia being sneaky and skimpy on the paint of the reel and now just painting the real a PLAIN Black instead of that sweet orange CUSTOM looking color and the price does NOT reflect cost since its ONLY Plain black. GTFOH with that nonsense!
