Wow, that was full of good tips. I just started fishing for Flatheads this past summer and will be selecting a new Flathead rod in the near future. Thanks for sharing!
My favorite flathead stick is a toss up between my heavy fmj and ugly stick tiger 7' med/heavy. That things a bulletproof workhorse with everything I want in a rod. Feels good in my hands like it was built custom for me 😆
That was my first ever flathead rod and I absolutely loved it! The only reason I got rid of it was cuz I started building custom rods. Then I found WST and I couldn't build a better one for the price. Hope you catch a jumbo on it!
Very clearly explained Spencer. When we go fishing the giant striped catfish here in South America, control of the line is a must. So long rods are the best choice, together with rotative reels. For a 45 minute to maybe an hour and a half fight depending on the size of the fish, its action will help you out with the retrieval and you'll keep your arm strength longer.
That sounds like a blast! I've never had to fight a catfish that long, but I guess a fish has to be mean to survive in those rivers. You're the man Jorge!
@@RiverCertified mean and gnarly!!! 165lb brutes. Unfortunately, there is little or no control regarding fishing. Too much commercial netting and no catch and release awareness is making a 165 lb one an exeption these days. Really sad...
@@jorgeandreszanocchi6485 that is sad. I would like to make a trip there someday, but I'll definitely have to make a point to get away from commercial fishing pressure.
Love tackle reviews. I have been using a Ugly Stik catfish series and tried a TWC rod . The TWC is really well built but it is really stiff. Don’t use it much. I want to try out Whisker Seeker rods, They seem as soft and strong as a Ugly Stik but not as bulky. Keep these tackle reviews coming. The TWC and Warrior cat and several others are about the same. Just different handle material and colors. But there all well built rods .Whisker Seeker has slimmer build. Gonna give one a shot.
That's my favorite part of the WS rod and I forgot to mention it. Lots of power in a lighter package. They will all get the job done tho. Glad you enjoyed it sir!
Those whisker rods are great. If given chance try getting a catfish sumo set up. Been nailing some tanks with great control and confidence. Tight lines my friend.
I remember when I first got one to try out. I got a medium heavy and I must say, it's a great blank. A lot of fun with smaller fish but can also handle the bigger ones as well. My PB Striper at 48lbs was caught on that blank in the Tennessee River. I was just never a fan of the components (guides & reel seat) or the fact that the finish fades pretty badly & rather quickly on it. So I bought new rods and had them completely stripped & refinished the way I wanted. Cost a little bit but not that bad for rods that will last me for many years. It's one of the best feeling blanks I've ever found.
I absolutely get what you're saying. Anything specifically you didn't like about the components? I'd be glad to pass along the feedback. Thanks for sharing! I'd love to see a striper that big!
Take me with you! I'm in North Florida. I love your videos Spencer! Your sense of humor...lmao hahahahahhah. Love it man. When you come to Florida let me know!!!!
The Duke and Spencer, all I needed to know about life and finding the Big Catfish I've pined for, for so very long. I'll be going to Bass Pro Shops in Altoona beginning of February. I'm very much a touchy feely kinda guy. No smart comments please, I will find you......LOL. Thanks for the tips, I love watching and I've learned so much. I'm really looking to going fishing this year once I heal from this disaster that has been my ankle. I'd really like it as well if you could talk a little Reel stuff. Just purchased that FMJ Heavy on Black Friday and can't wait to use it. Great quality for the price, IMO. I also bought some of the crazy ass rattles and rig components that I've seen in your vids. I guess you can teach this old dog new tricks.
I like those whisker seeker rods you use but my preference are the Muddy River rods Kris Flores puts out. And yes they hit everyone of your checkpoints. I have to admit though that sometimes when I'm channel catting I just use my old ugly stick because I dont need such heavy gear. Tight lines and thanks for all the good content.
Kris makes some great fishing rods! I especially like the handle. I'm with ya tho, most companies don't make a good channel cat specific rod, even the whisker MH are a little heavy for fish under 5-10 lbs. Thanks for watching!
Great video man! Lots of great information divulged in this segment which I greatly appreciate. Thanks alot. Also made sure I subscribed. Look forward to seeing more!!
Try checking into B&M rods. They meet the same requirements and they are slightly cheaper. My question to you is when it comes to a handle do you prefer the cork, eva foam or a wrapped handle. I really dig the wrapped handles. Partially why I’m a big fan of B&M rods. I like the thiner profile. I don’t like a squishy and thick profile of a handle that you get with cork or foam. Plus foam and cork just falls apart so easily in my experience.
I've handled a few some buddies had. They're a darn nice rod. I love cord wrapped grips. When I built rods, that's what I did to mine. I hope WST goes to win grips someday tho. I like those even more. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tips. I purchased a Penn 209 reel for catfishing. I'm hoping to do a ton of river fishing this summer. I will be fishing medium sized rivers such as the East and west fork des moines rivers
good video-you explained really well-you have helped me a lot watching what you do-thanks and good luck in the future-i liked you talking and going over line control

How much weight do you think the Whisker Seeker MH can deadlift before it breaks? So far I think that it can deadlift about 15-20 pounds before it breaks, but if you can give me a good estimate, that would help me a lot. Love your videos man!
Good advice can you do 1 on reels that includes line counters. You've got 1 of the top 5 channels out their for actual advice definitely improved my hook up success.
Nice. What about a 2 piece med. Spinning rod? I do have 7,8, 9 ' 2 piece rods. I don't like any braided line. I use only mono. So far so good. Do you think my preference is just being lucky or wrong. I can't be on a boat. I only bank fish.
Thanks for the video. I pretty much fish for catfish most of the time. I should get some lighter rods for other size fish. Off topic I was at Little blue River were it runs into the Missouri and caught a soft shell turtle about 20ish inch shell. Swear he stuct his feet in the mud, never had something fight so hard and so hard to pull in. He was not happy either... went after a friend of mine. Didnt think we were ever gonna get it off of my line.
My go to rod for bank fishing on the Ohio R., Is my TWSF1025S10 Shakespeare Tidewater. Its a ten ft. surfcasting outfit, that is good for 90 lb fish, or 10 lb fish. My reel is a Penn #140 squidder salt reel. It's ok with 40 to 80 pound line, has a loud clicker, and has free spool for casting. All ya gotta know about hog rods, is go with medium salt water gear.
The have a really forgiving tip too and nice action, especially for the price. Perfect for bank fishing! Hope you keep catching jumbos! Thanks for watching!
Hey Spencer I've been fishing with way to light gear and I'm ready to step up and that rod sounds like what I'm looking for. You say it's a whisker seeker heavy power 7.5 foot. What action is it? I looked on there web site and there is a number of the 7.5 heavy power. I don't have many to through around so I would like to order the right one the first time. Thanks for your help. Tony
Love the video. I have this rod/reel with your favorite float bobber setup tied on. Can't wait for this flathead season. What spinning reel is that in the background, on your Chad Ferguson model whisker seeker?
Good run-down. Gotta have the wife watch this so she knows I’m not blowin smoke when she ask me why I “need’ so many rods. I’ll just tell her “hey this dude is a science teacher, he ought to know!”
Thankyou for the informative video on selecting catfish rods... I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Being new to fishing for larger 10 to 70lb cats, I've ordered 4 rods; 2 for my wife (spinning), and 2 for me (casting). Each of us will have 1 MH catfish rod of each brand (Rippin Lips Super Cat & KastKing KastKat). They will be paired with KastKing Sharky Baitfeeder III 6000 Series Spinning Reels for her, and KastKing Rover 6000 Series Baitcasting Reels for me. I can't wait film the unboxing & test them on the water. Wish me luck.
@@RiverCertified I really did ! Spencer, you give out excellent information , and that is coming from a 70 year old man , who has been fishing since I was 6 years old ! Thank you !
My current setup is a 9ft Sixgill Erebus and and ambassaduer C3 7000. I also buy cheap penn pursuit combos rated for up to 3oz. Able to chuck a 8oz bullhead and a 3oz lead on them without snapping 😂
Love the video bud and your channel. Do you like the 2 piece 7 1/2 footer. I just figured it would be nice to be able to break em down when in old ladies car at times
Hey Spencer I see you like whisker seeker rods. I have several . I have one that the tip broke about 6 inches down. I was lifting a small fish up and it broke. Are they good with backing up there warranties.
That sucks man. Yeah they're pretty good. It's best to shoot them a call direct. Just tell them what happened and they should set ya straight. Thanks for watching Chad!
I was wondering if you ever switch over to a more ridged heavy pole if your fishing in a more heave current?....only because of the constant back and forth movement from the tip if your using a medium heavy.....or does that not matter that much using a medium heavy in a stronger current with the tip kind of swaying slowly a little back and forth? Lol
The Whisker Seeker FMJ Heavy is my favorite rod. However I fish the James and I have to throw up to 16 ounces of lead sometimes. For this I go to my extra heavy BCF
Both are great rods man. I've tossed 16 oz on the heavy many times. I just lob it. I'm sure the BCF XH have a little more backbone to launch em though.
I haven't checked into those. T Will they have a booth at catfish Conference? As long as you're happy with it, that's what matters😁 thanks for watching!
Hey Spencer, you forgot mention, as most people on UA-cam do, if you're just starting out in any type of fishing, buy the gear YOU can afford to pay for/lose. For a beginner, a broken $40 rod is easier to swallow than a $250 broken rod. Work your way up to the upper echelon gear. Here is an example, some idiot on YT said you have to buy this $500 combo, a friend went out and bought said combo, couldn't afford it either, first trip out they went under a low bridge in a boat and he had that rod sticking up and snapped the top 10" or so clean off. NEVER made one cast with that $500 combo.
I guess I just assumed that went without saying. I wasn't necessarily recommending any rod in particular, just stating what I look for and the rod I like the best. just hope people can find a rod they're happy with. Thanks for sharing your thoughts man!
Been using B&M sliver cat Elite off the banks it's a tough rod but I notice it's not so for giving on the tip been thinking about the slime cat rod or the whisker seeker rod but after watching this I made my mind up going to get the Whisker Seeker thanks for the vid and tips on a good rod
Thanks for posting. Hope your x-mas was good. Can you give a lesson on casting with a bait casting reel with a star drag? And, I'm going to get a backlash so how to best clear the backlash would also be helpful.
Also just before putting bait on hold the pole up and release the sinker/hook, you want it to fall to the ground without backlash after (but not too tight either) you can get the tensioner set perfect and you casts will backlash only if you really mess up
I go with a Ugly Stik Catfish rod and a Ancient Mariner Albatross 6000 it will slay anything from Black tip shark to falthead catfish for around 150 bucks
One more question? What is the ordering address, because we don't have access to a whisper seeker outlet where I live. Thanks for all you do for the catfish world. I enjoy all your videos. Rock on
Timely subject. Trying to decide on my first Flathead rod to pair with the Shimano Baitrunner Santa brought me. Doing the UA-cam reviews and searching the interwebs, BUT, IME there is no substitute for a hands on evaluation when it comes to fishing rods. Sucks when the shipping tube arrives, and it doesn't quite contain the action you envisioned, at least that's my excuse for having so many😂
I know exactly what you are talking about, especially from buying blanks to build rods. It's a great reason to go to catfish Conference. You can see em all. Thanks for watching sir!
Theyre great rods! I used one from the surf and was impressed how it handled big redfish. They fight kinda like a flathead. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@@kansasoutdoors5667 All the 2 piece are MH. I prefer the heavy over the MH for blues and flatheads. Would be worth checking out as well. Good luck man!
I have (4) seekers with Abu 6500c3 love them, but I think my “Tangling with Catfish” 10’ whisker stix is an excellent for nice distance,,,,,,,, my funnest rod is actually a (3) piece Akios Hellrazor that’s 14’ long paired with An Akios Shuttle conventional, that rig cast 100 plus yards easy and consistent. My local res. Has a deeper Chanel that sets in the middle .....I have to reach that zone to reach bigger fish, that setups sweet spot is 7oz.......it’s a site to behold reaching those distances
I get that. I have a diawa trybeam i use when I have to get a bait wat out there. It casts like an absolute dream. Thanks for sharing! Bombing a bait is a satisfying feeling haha
I honestly like them a lot. Great action, and catered towards handling big fish and using big baits, at least from what I remember. Haven't handled one since catfish conference last February.
I have an old ambassador 5500 baitcaster looking to pair it up with a rod. Been wanting to get a whisker seeker rod as well been eyeballing then for a few years now. Think they'd be a good match up? If so what rod for the reel do you think?
A light weight heavy action rod with a baitclicker conventional reel is ideal. Catfish can get pretty big so its good to have a reel with high torque. Spinning reels could work too but i dont like putting strain on the bail as the bail could fail.
It may be all I do is think about catfishing. I got the ws 9 and a half fmj. What a difference between the ugly stick catfish rods and I don't have one bad thing to say about the ugly stick catfish rod I still am a fan. But there is a difference. I like it. Hey the cork on my whisker seeker Handle is getting kind of beat up. Is there something you do to the cork on your ws rods. Thanks for the video as always good info Spencer hope you had a good Christmas
Ugly stick is the original catfish slayer. Tough to beat and even compete with them. They're working on a way to make the handles more durable. I haven't had problems, but I know others have. Give them a call and they might be able to help. Thanks for watching and merry late Christmas!
That kinda looks like a spinning rod is it? Good video I would like to get a hold of some of that whisker seeker gear but I'm kinda leery about buying stuff on the net is there any stores in texas I can go buy it at personally?
It's a casting rod, but they have spinning rods too. They sell them at Dicks sporting goods and scheels. You can look up dealers on their website. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about them.
I’m also from Iowa I live along the cedar river channel cats are my specialty on the river but I’ve also seen big flatheads come out of it and it kinda bugs me that I’ve never caught one this last summer I even did a lot of specific targeting for flatheads to no avail any tip or pointers from one Iowan to another? Biggest channel this year was 14.50 lbs biggest ever was in the twenty range or just under
Those are some nice fish man! I have several articles on my website that might help plus the flathead playlist on my UA-cam channel! Let me know if you have any specific questions! Thanks for watching!
Any idea when you make it out to Texoma in the spring? Trying to get it on my calendar! Ready to get on some of them big blues! Let me know when you get that nailed down! #BarFlyFishingTexas
A lot of the nicer catfish rods look really similar. I have big cat fever rods. I really like them, it the whisker seeker rods look way cooler, lol. You should do a video on reels. I’m all over the board with reels. I have abu,s, penn’s and my last one a diawa sealine.
I always gravitate to XHeavy or XXHeavy rods, they're not real fun with lighter fish. My two favorite rods are an pro cat 7ft solid fiberglass snagging rod from academy ( way to stiff really) and my 7ft XHeavy shark rod. I think I'm subconsciously afraid a monster is going to break my rod if I don't use these types 🤷🏻♂️

Love the video. I have this rod/reel with your favorite float bobber setup tied on. Can't wait for this flathead season. What spinning reel is that in the background, on your Chad Ferguson model whisker seeker?
I was told I have a more softer for giving tip section😬💯🥃🎣 love the videos bro all of them🍺👌🏾
No comment😆😆 really glad you enjoy the videos!
What specific kind of reel did you have on this rod ?
Good run-down. Gotta have the wife watch this so she knows I’m not blowin smoke when she ask me why I “need’ so many rods. I’ll just tell her “hey this dude is a science teacher, he ought to know!”
Haha I'm not sure that qualifies me as an expert, but if it helps I say run with it😆 you're the man Robert! Thanks for watching!
Hahaha never thought of that. But I think I'll use the term "scientific expert".
Mr Spencer i would like to purchase some of your bank rod holders if you would tell me how to purchase them please
Great video and super helpful, thank you!
Sounds like you're sitting good. Glad ya enjoy the videos!
Loved the video, Spencer ! Great information , you are the man !
Glad you enjoyed it sir!
Those sixgills look sweet man! Thanks for watching Jacob!
Very educational and useful. Thanx!!
Glad you found it helpful man!
Lol
Thanks for the advice and tips! 👍🏽
I hope it helps! Thanks for watching!
I started using hefty cat rods. I got way from braid for cats. Lost a big one on braid. Switched to big game line.
I haven't checked into those. T
Will they have a booth at catfish Conference? As long as you're happy with it, that's what matters😁 thanks for watching!
Your rigs are great. Keep making great videos.
Is that one a medium heavy or heavy action?
Heavy sir
River Certified Sweet thank you
Hey Spencer, you forgot mention, as most people on UA-cam do, if you're just starting out in any type of fishing, buy the gear YOU can afford to pay for/lose.
@@RiverCertified wisher seeker rods are gunetin
Do you use medium heavy WS rods for the 70-80 pounders?
They will work, but I prefer the heavies for the bigger cats
@@RiverCertified where do you find them at? Been looking heavily into them for a while but their website doesn’t have them.
Very informative thank you for the video..I hope to catch a monster this summer
Hope you do too! Glad you got something out of the video!
I can. In the meantime, keep your thumb in the side of the spool and not the middle. Gives you more control. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
Also just before putting bait on hold the pole up and release the sinker/hook, you want it to fall to the ground without backlash after (but not too tight either) you can get the tensioner set perfect and you casts will backlash only if you really mess up
Thank u for your advice.
Rock on
What is the best length for a rod
From a boat I like a 7-8 footer. From the bank I like 9-10 footers, but the shorter ones will still work. Thanks for watching Brad!
what kind of fishing line do you use mono or braid?
I'm a braid fan. 85 lb braid with a 50 lb leader fir flatheads and 30 lb for channels. Thanks for watching!
Timely subject. Trying to decide on my first Flathead rod to pair with the Shimano Baitrunner Santa brought me. Doing the UA-cam reviews and searching the interwebs, BUT,
IME there is no substitute for a hands on evaluation when it comes to fishing rods.
I love an ugly stick tiger lite heavy action, penn reel or a nice abu.
I got 2 of them and there not bad at all. Its now Dec in my ky state and it's 65 outside and I'm ready to rip some lips lol
Theyre great rods! I used one from the surf and was impressed how it handled big redfish. They fight kinda like a flathead. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@@RiverCertified i did get a chance to use a 2 piece whisker seeker it was a solid rod, really looking into b&m silver cats as well.
@@kansasoutdoors5667 All the 2 piece are MH. I prefer the heavy over the MH for blues and flatheads. Would be worth checking out as well. Good luck man!
You should do a video like this on flat head reels etc
That's a great idea! Illnadd it to the list. Thanks for watching!
River Certified yes it is brother......enjoy your vids, get em coming
How many whisker seeker rods in that room?
Gotta be around a dozen. I might have a problem Haha. Thanks for watching!
It seems like most catfish rods are heavy. Do you by the way know how heavy this rod is in ounces?
13.6 ounces for the one with the metal reel seat. The ones with the graphite reel seat weigh 12.6 ounces.
@@RiverCertified thanks
What do you think about the Tangle With Cats Monster Rod Series rods I just got a medium heavy rod
I honestly like them a lot. Great action, and catered towards handling big fish and using big baits, at least from what I remember. Haven't handled one since catfish conference last February.
I bought 2 of the ws rods the 7'6 mh spinning what would be a good spinning reel to pair with these rods thx
Id recommend an okuma avenger abf 5000. Great reels for the money.
Nice video!. what kind of reel is that?
Thanks dude! It's an abu 7000
Great video thanks for the information
Glad you enjoyed it Emalii. Hope it helps!
Do you use the medium heavy or heavy rods?
Heavy for flatheads usually
I have an old ambassador 5500 baitcaster looking to pair it up with a rod. Been wanting to get a whisker seeker rod as well been eyeballing then for a few years now. Think they'd be a good match up? If so what rod for the reel do you think?
That was a really good informative video and I even agree with most of it
A light weight heavy action rod with a baitclicker conventional reel is ideal.
Did your whisker seeker come with the reel and if not what reel do you recomendm
Thanks for watching!
looking for good affordable bait caster for flats, best advice?
The Okuma Classic is cheap and good. So are Penn 209s.
Man it's 2019 December 28th and it's also 66 outside which is insane weather for kentucky. Its got me all pumped up for ripping lips lol
Better get after them!
Big water 7 foot medium heavy with a ats 30 is an amazing combo and cheap
Great video man. You forgot to mention the sexy orange color always helps lol
Aesthetics usually slips my mind, because I think all rods look best dirty haha. Thanks for watching!
Are you going to catfish conference in February??
Yessir! Say hi if you see me. Thanks for watching!
What have you caught with that penn senator in the end table? Looks like a 10/0 or 12/0. Love your vids!
I used to live for shark fishing! It's a 16/0. Got it so I could be like Captain Quint haha. Thanks for watching!
Where do you look for one of those rods
Should be linked in the description, or go to www.whiskerseeker.com
Lance Hargis,
Want to know your thoughts on two piece rods. Thought I saw one on one of your videos.
By the way ,keep the up
Love'em....
I don't think it matters in the grand scheme. Use what works best for ya.
Any idea when you make it out to Texoma in the spring? Trying to get it on my calendar! Ready to get on some of them big blues! Let me know when you get that nailed down! #BarFlyFishingTexas
I'll message ya. Not sure what days I'll be kayak fishing and what days I'll be fishing with another buddy yet. Thanks for watching!
Yes I got 2 love them wish I could afford 2 more. Thanks for sharing the vidoe. God bless
Glad you like them Danny! Hope you can get those 2 others someday. Thanks for watching!
A lot of the nicer catfish rods look really similar. I have big cat fever rods. I really like them, it the whisker seeker rods look way cooler, lol. You should do a video on reels. I’m all over the board with reels. I have abu,s, penn’s and my last one a diawa sealine.
Big cat fever makes an absolutely awesome rod! I will definitely do a reel video this winter man!
Got the merch for Christmas
Thanks a ton! I really hope you enjoy it!
I can tell from ur video use Whitaker seeker much 😂😂!! Lol. Ordered today cause of this video lol thanks
They make it easy to be a fan. They make good stuff!
Yes they do I'll hopefully like as much as you do buddy. You helped
