Final Fantasy VIII is my favorite in the series. As a kid I really related to Squall cuz I had a hard time expressing emotions and forming friendships and such due to my home life and depression. Always irritates me when people say he has no personality.
Gale Anderson I’m right there with you. I’d go so far as to say I modeled myself after him a bit. I was going through a really hard time with my parents splitting up and I didn’t know how to express myself. I acted out, got into a fight, I felt like I could only truly rely on myself. Oddly enough, as the game progressed, so did I. Squall started to open up more and rely on his friends, and I started doing the same because I saw how he benefited. I’m forever grateful for this game. Absolute favorite, and it hurts when people bash it 😥
I was surprised by how much I related with him too. I was abandoned by my parents as a baby and raised by my sister. I never really had a childhood, so I missed out on a lot. I was always treated differently so I never really formed relationships with people. In my mind I felt like I could only really rely on myself. I eventually through sheer hate and anger worked out until I was extremely physically fit and joined the Navy. I never played Final Fantasy VIII until my fifth year in. His character felt so familiar. Sorry for the long post. I think a lot of us went through some crap. It’s good to know you’re not alone out there.
I’ve missed flying Ragnarok! The sleek design, the red colour, the flexibility in flying and landing across various landscapes...It’s one and only JRPG airship that has lasting impression on me. Love it!
Thats why i quit playing the new FF series...now and days its so "linear" and does not feel soooo..."FANTASY" anymore. I remember growing up, wanting to live in the Final Fantasy world.
I remember wen I first discovered d factory in d midst of d sea with Ragnarok where u get to fight Bahamut and ultima weapon.. 😍😍😍😍 d atmosphere was just argghhhhh
Ff8 had one of the best openings and ending credit scenes ever. You don't see that anymore. Back then beating a game was a big deal, and u grabbed some popcorn and a drink bc u were in for a treat. Nowadays when u beat a game, nothing much but the credits happen, and maybe if ur lucky an in-game cutscene. I remember as a kid I would beat FF8 just to watch the amazing heartfelt ending.
Dude, when i saw the FFVIII opening for the first time back in 99, my jaw hit the ground.I actually restarted my Playstation i dont know how many times just to see that Opening yet again, thats how amazed i was at that one.................and still am. FFVIII has many elements that still are my all-time favorite ones ever in gaming and that Opening surely is one of them.
Omg... When I was nine years old, my family ordered a pizza. That Pizza Hut demo disk changed my life, lol, I'm now almost 30 and have been in love with FF since that day. Super exciting for me to see it mentioned here.
@Tanya Johnson Yooo!! Me too!! I remember when my mom came home with Pizza Hut and said "here, this disc says Playstation on it..." she didn't know how much that demo would mean to me. I still play it to this day. These were definitely the best days.
During an awful time in my life, I was 11, and my mom bribed me with this game so I would go to therapy. It didn't work too well, but I got to hide in Balamb. Squall being a protaganist emotionally shut down and distanced by all his pain, that resonated with me far more than any therapy. Fuckin stories matter, man.
I agree, but therapy is very good, too, when implemented properly. I had some good experiences with child psychiatric stuff and I had some nightmarish experiences when I was in a new city. If we hadn't moved, I might have been supported properly and been able to graduate with my friends. Who knows? I was institutionalized as a teen, with guards and prison rules, so that wasn't great. I have more issues from things introduced to me in the current city I'm in than I had from being bullied and acting like a crazy kid in the previous city. It started out good, not having anyone know me or my past, but then certain medication made me really fat, really fast, wrecking my body and spine (risperidone and I went from 35kg to 80 as a 12 year old in the space of 2 months, can't blame puberty for that because that didn't happen until I was 15) or made me act horrible to my parents which made them press charges and put me in a mental asylum for teens, but I would have been alright if I stayed with my previous city's psychiatrist who knew which medication worked. I relate more to Cloud's backstory, especially when he was a kid. Cloud has so many traumas that cause him to freak out or disassociate.
@@SlayerRunefrost ill play the devil's advocate and say the gameplay was actually pretty fun It felt like I was getting more and more powerful with each magic Draw and by the end I had full stacks of the most powerful magics on Squall Rinoa and Irvine
I've played Final Fantasy VIII at least 50 times since i was 8 years old (29 this year), there was actually so many things i missed out on! Shoutout from Malaysia, you're great man!
Same! I'll be 29 this year too. My dad worked at Pizza Hut and he got me all the pizza hut demo discs. I fell in love with FF8 immediately. It's still my favorite game of all time.
Nearly 20 years later and I'm still as in love with this game as I was the day it was released. Thanks for the video. It was lovely to learn some things I hadn't known about the game.
FFVIII is my favorite Final Fantasy, and I'm pleasantly surprised that you actually mentioned a couple things I didn't know. It also makes me very happy to see that FFVIII has been getting a lot more love lately. Now there just needs to be more love for FFV!
It's the worst in the series by far. Magic is painful and tied to your stats which is retarded. Leveling outscales bosses in contrast to you. The story is also really weak.
I remember not being a fan of this game when it first came out on PS1. Downloaded it on Steam last year to give it another go. Absolutely love it now. Younger me was an idiot.
I must have started a game on it like 18-20 years ago, and I was not able to get into it at the time. I'm definitely going to give it a shot now that they have the remaster on PS4. I've been replaying 7, and am close to the end now. Just doing my Emerald/Ruby Weapon pre-grind.
@@Arbron That was my issue. I was born at the tail end of the 80's and had heard all the rumors on FF7 growing up around the adults but I thought you had you play all the other games before you could understand the next number, lol. I later learned that wasn't true and so when I got a PSP 3000 ages later, I finally played it and understood all the fuss. Now, not only that, but I had made myself patiently wait on playing Crisis Core until after beating 7. So, not only did I come off of playing what many consider the best maim title FF game, I had also finished one of the best side games to an FF title. Going from Core to FF8, I just was not feeling it. I compared it too heavily to FF7 and didn't get very far before ditching it. It was just too hard for me to look at it as its own thing. But, I'd like to try again sometime. At the time of writing this, FF7 Remake is poised to release next month so it'll yet again have to be after I finish 7 ;)
FFVIII is my favorite game, and I’ve spent countless hundreds of hours playing, thinking, and reading about it. But I was genuinely surprised by a good deal of these. Great video!
You taught me a new word today. I had no idea that Deuteragonist was a word It refers to the second most important character in a story. As so happens, can usually be referred to as the love interest, in stories that include them.
Loved the piece about Zell and his secret loving admirer, that put a smile on my face (so sweet!). I enjoyed this video. I honestly only knew about Julia, most of the rest was discovered today right here.
That questline is one of the more obscure ones in the franchise. Even the GameFAQs board didn't really document it fully until the past couple of years. (The GF boards for these games are usually the equivalent of think-tanks.) Same goes for the Protect Ring quest in FF9, which I assume will get a mention in the FF9 video.
I just discovered another Star Wars reference! I'm playing the game as I write this (well, it's paused, but you know what I mean, lol) and I'm getting ready to fight Ultima Weapon in the Deep Sea Deposit. When you insert the final 10 steam units, Zell says, "I have a bad feeling about this" HELLO! I laughed out loud, then immediately thought of this video and had to share it with you! Thanks for all you do, FF Union, you make Final Fantasy fun again!! 🤓😋😁
I received this game for Xmas back when I was 14. The opening scene, hooked me and I spent the better part of two years trying to beat that game... This game is means a lot to me.
12:20 *FFVIII has more Star Wars references than any other Final fantasy game.* Scuse me sir, but the entire plot and premise of Final Fantasy XII would like to have a word with you: A boy dreaming of flying away from his home comes across an excommunicated old war veteran betrayed by an empire, a roguish debonair smuggler pirate that owns a ship, copiloted by his "furry" compatriot, they rescue a princess that has plans to take down an evil empire and they all go on the run from the evil empire to bring the plans to a rebellious faction in order to take down said empire... oh and Penello is there.
@@shauqiharris2772 Vaan is Luke Skywalker, Basch is Obi Wan, Ashe is Leia, Balthier is Han Solo, Even Fran is a "Furry" sidekick like Chewbacca I mean come ON. oh and Penelo is there too I guess..
Funny thing is that pizza hut demo was my very first exposure to Final Fantasy which is arguably now one of if not certainly my favorite game series of all time. Possibly even just media series. Wasn't the first full game I played in the series (9) but still I prolly wouldn't have cared to try 9 if not for it. Those demo disks were so great I loved em. They were technically ads but they were fun bite sized gameplay of all kinds of games. I actually really wish they could do something like that again. Even with digital demos I think doing it in compilatuons would actually be great marketing.
omg me too! I was like 11 and I made it my mission to beat that damn demo. Then when I went to the store to get it with my mom, it was too expensive, so I picked up FF7 instead since my ignorant self said "IS THAT ZELL WITH A SWORD! XD 7 ended up being my first full game, but 8 has always been my favorite once I finally got to play it.
Still my favourite Final Fantasy game and one of my favourite games of all time! What can I say about this game, a true masterpiece! The space sequence, the ending, Fay Wong's "Eyes on me" and a myriad of other things. It still bothers me to this day (has it been 19 years already?), that I had to sacrifice my precious Laguna card in order to defeat the "strongest boss in the game" if you know what I mean! Great video mate, cheers!
I looked for a post where he did that after wondering how a part of the game that doesn't 100% have him in it can be happening in his fevered dying imagination, I seriously wonder at the logic some people have
Best limit breaks? I say worse. Rinoa and Selphie are too random, Squall has 1/4 of a chance hitting Lion Heart, Zell's take way too long and aside from Degenerator, Mighty Guard and Shockwave Pulsar, Quistis is useless
Saying this as someone who has 9 as their favorite Final Fantasy game: Tetra Master is dumb and the game does a terrible job of explaining the mechanics to you.
I didn't like 8 because of the battle system sucking, and playing card games while some serious shit is going down. Also Squalls Gunblade looks stupid and he's emo. The only cool characters is Seifer and Zell AKA White Tyson. Everyone else is forgettable. Oh and even though they are a ragtag team they all happen to be orphans at the same orphanage.
FFVIII is my second favorite in the series and the second I played after FFVII (not counting the awesome FFT). I don't think FFVIII gets enough love and is underrated.
@Spit Dragon i think it is underrated. Yes, the system definately has its flaws but the diversity of the characters, the story telling, the realistic flaws within each individual, etc is quite nice and, aside from the magic being tied to stats deal, it was a grear system overall.
Woah! Final Fantasy Tactics. Miss those times when FF games were actually good. The storyline, the gameplay, the fantasy in those games... Maybe it's just my nostalgia? :D
"In Europe, you can get a demo for purchasing a specific Sony magazine, in America, you'd get a demo for ordering from pizza hut" That about sums everything up for me.
I upvoted when you thanked us for taking the time to fully and completely watch your vid. Just like this video was fully, completely, and thoughtfully put together.
Fascinating! I HAD noticed that there were differences during certain parts of the game (the main one being that sometimes Ward was there for the Ruby Dragon fight and sometimes he wasn't.) This really puzzled me, because I was never really sure why. Thanks for solving one of life's mysteries for me! Lol! My next mission will be to get all of Library Girl's dialogue! I always used to wonder what she was saying... And I remember that music from the demo! I liked it, but never really gave much thought as to why t had been changed. Thanks for uploading this video - it was a good watch!
My personal favorite. Granted it needed another year of play testing and development because some gameplay elements aren't fully baked, but I love the game. Currently playing it on my channel.
@Spit Dragon I did not mention Final Fantasy 6 or graphics at all in my comment. Where is this rant coming from? All I said was FFVIII was my favorite. And FYI I DID play FF6 and Chrono Trigger. I love both of them.
Ever since I got my play station when I was a kid, I loved playing this game and I cried when watching the end credits.. I love ff franchise but this one is I really effing love. I HAVE A HUGGGEE CRUSH ON SQUALL💕💕 Anyways, hopefully this will get a remake with voiceover^^ Good job on posting this video^^
Great video! Always brings a smile to my face when this game gets some love :) Regarding the music in this game, there's one thing I noticed long ago: if you listen to The Man With the Machine Gun and compare it to Fire by Takayuki Miyauchi (specifically the intros of both songs), I always thought they sounded strikingly similar. Now, the latter song is REALLY old and it's probably just a coincidence or something, but give it a listen and judge for yourself.
Rushed? Lost code? are you joking. You do know that they already released the games on PS3, PSP, PS Vita and Steam. So how could they do that if they lost the code. And the game was far from rushed. A FF game around that time usual had a developement time of around 2 years, which FF8 also had. So the game was far from rushed or you could say all FF games was rushed. The problem here is that it came after FF7 which was one of the best selling FF games ever and people had so high expectations for the next one that they consumers ruined it for themselves and thus they gave FF8 a bad name (even though the game is great, but is confusing at certain points). Just like how people thought a movie they saw was awesome and couldn't wait for a sequal just to be disappointed when it comes out as it didn't live up to their expectations.
@@kkbbss To be fair, the PS3, PSP and PS Vita versions are just the PS1 ISO's, they could get them from anywhere. And the Steam release is just a wrapper around the original terrible PC release which again, they could get those files from anywhere. PS4 doesn't have a PS1 emulator in it which is why FF7 is the Steam version ported over. However if they ported over the Steam version of 8 it would be given a -100 out of 100 as it is an absolutely terrible port. They fixed 7, but they never fixed 8, I assume because they don't have the source to be able to fix it. Oh also Eidos did the PC ports so you can't exactly blame Square for not having the source for the PC versions
@@billytaj7708 is joking, you guys...(at least I hope). FF8 has, unfortunately, become the "bastard child" of the Golden Age of Final Fantasies, and so they try to downplay its existence whenever possible. It's kinda like...the director Robert Rodriguez, all of his films have a specific format/set of extras when released on DVD: he has a bit called "10-minute film school", obviously a commentary track, footage from the set, deleted scenes. The ONLY film he didn't do this for was "The Faculty", which was received lukewarmly, and so he did everything he could to let it get buried as the past. That's what Square does with VIII, which is sandwiched between landmark VII and the "Pleasing Old School Fans" IX,,,
Don't know why UA-cam recommended me this video 2 years later, even though i love Final Fantasy and FF8 is no different. And i like to give a thumbs up to the creator of this video. Usually, those "X facts you (probably)didn't know about Y" are clickbait AF, but this one is actually pretty good! Thanks for the video!
I feel like Final Fantasy VIII is finally being shown some love. It makes me happy! I used to spend hours on that Rebelling Princess website back in the day
Those were some noteworthy facts. I particularly liked the Dollet demo music, Timber Maniac and its influence on the Dream Laguna, Rinoa inspiration and the Star Wars ones. Thank you for sharing.
Great video! I found out about the magazines through messing around. For quite awhile was so confused during those scenes during some playthroughs, like wait? Wasn't this different? I remember it being different! Just like depending on what music you chose to play in FH determines whether or not Rinoa finishes the conversation, or runs off. It took me a long time to find out about Zell's love quest, and so the last few playthroughs have been trying to figured out why sometimes I can get all of the scenes flawlessly, and other times I have a hard time triggering one. I didn't know that you had to visit the library 50 times for some things, so that might have been it. Thanks for the great content, it's always interesting to see. :D
@@Morbid_Max Sorry that is what I meant when I said early games. I got the same exact opinion as you man, ff4 and ff8 all the way. Of course almost all FF games are good games for their time. The only ones I kinda think are meh are ff5, 11 and everything after. Ff1 was revolutionary so it at least gets default greatness because of that. 2 and 3 improved on ff1 so I kinda give them a pass too. FF5 though, idk man. It was fun but that's all it was. I remember thinking "what the fuck it feels like everyone pitched ideas for scenarios and they just said ok to all of them." Kinda felt like it sacrificed plot, which ff4 did fantastically, to be crazy. I don't at all hate it but imo it was disappointing playing it after the masterpiece that was ff4. Ff11 and onwards to me kinda have the same feeling of them as I do about ff2 and 3 in the sense that they improved the gameplay but 11 and onwards don't have the excuse that 2 and 3 had which is that square wasn't super focused on story in those games. The stories in those games were bland compared to 7-10 imo. They're still fun to play don't get me wrong but I think there are clearly and empirically "better" FFs especially when you take the times they were released into consideration. I'll shut up now.
The Final Fantasy tactics reference in the Triple Triad trivia blew my mind. Two of my favorite Final Fantasy games of all time linked all this time, and I never knew.
I’ve probably played and beaten FFVIII five times over and I never knew about the library girl with a pigtail dialogue! 😳 Didn’t know that stuff about Raijin, Fujin, and Edea either! lol
I was the 8th like on your comment.. it must be a sign. Seriously, FF8 is the best in my opinion. So glad the remaster is happening, and hoping so much for the remake!
I didn't know they were doing a remaster. I happen to spot it at the PlayStation store. $31NZD as opposed to $125NZD when it first came out on PS1... Bargain... 😆
"The Landing" info was amazing!!! When I was a kid, I downloaded a midi pack of FF8 music, and that track was among them. Years later I saw The Rock, recognized it, and was baffled, wondering if they put the wrong midi in the pack. The explanation that it was an early version makes so much more sense. Now, I need to figure out why I heard "Song of Nephilim" from Xenosaga played a few times in Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Gave me the shivers because it was so unexpected, but there'd be a lot of episodes to go through to find it...
Hipsters: Gwent best card game ever! FF VIII's Triple Triad: Hold my beer... Still remember getting the 42 Malboro cards required for Quistis Blue Magic + Doomtrain Summon before going to Ifrit's cave... only to realize that TT players ALSO LEVELLED UP THEIR CARDS if you played too many matches... Or that you could randomly erase tricky rules (such as Random on the Moon) or spreading beneficial ones (such as Open) by playing several hands and soft-resetting until you got the right one without paying a dime to the Queen of Cards. Yeah; nearly 50% of FF playtime was Triple Triad.
Just wanted to say thanks for the facts. Honestly was unaware of most of it. I knew the timber magazines affected the flashbacks, but had no clue which ones did. And it also gives evidence of my sanity, because I ALWAYS KNEW THERE WAS SOOOOME REASON WHY WARD DIDN'T HAVE MY BACK AGAINST THAT RUBY DRAGON!!! But all's well that ends well =] Great video.
i don't know where did you get this information, but, someone give him a medal, he deserves it. This kind of information needs a lot of time and research.
I did some looking and it seems that the issues is one of two things. Either they lost the code to the sands of time(which does actually happen from games of this era) or a rights dispute with the music. Either one is stupid.
It's not stupid, it's old video games we're talking about, do you still have your homework from school at home ? Or any project you were trying to do as a kid, no. So they did indeed lost the source code, the remaster is being what we call "reverse engineered" where they're actually taking the whole crating process reverse mode in order to complete and refine it. I hope it will look great and have no bugs or problems at launch it's hard to tell how much time they've been working on. I also hope the rumors about a demo from the horrible Final fantasy 10%7 remake will be in the package and the remaster game being voice in japanese. Cause seeing the prices leaked makes me mad.
Didn't know most of these, and I was particularly intrigued that Laguna flashbacks can be changed depending on when you find the Timber Maniacs magazines. Like many other commenters, I do hope they do a PS4 re-release as they've done with VII and IX. I think the biggest problem is the battle and progression systems. It just hasn't aged as well as many of the other games. So the tough question is do you keep the battle system in place and leave it as is, do you make slight alterations, or do you overhaul it completely? Also, VII and IX were more broadly well received, while VIII has more of a niche audience. They would want to release it in a way that would appeal to a broader audience, which means having to make some game design decisions they didn't have to make with VII and IX.
For a very long time I thought that I was crazy, remembering clearly Laguna talking to Julia until he said something like "I talk too much", but now I have proof that IT REALLY EXIST! As a young gamer of the '90 era, I played rather poorly, and never knew there was a Timber Maniacs in Balamb Hotel (didn'have friends or internet at that time). But re-playing FF8 many times every now and then, I always did everything I could to complete it at 100% (it's my favourite to play), even get that TM in Balamb. And, of course, always seeing the "I can't stand alcohol" Laguna. I really thought I was crazy, remembering something that would never happen. Thank you very, very much for proving me right, after all this years I finally know how to see that version of the flashback.
FF8 and The Legend of Dragoon, my top 2 games EVER. Nothing even comes close to them for me. Played them both like 10+ times when I was younger. Good times
3:17 I was in 4th grade sick as hell on a rainy Thursday night when mom's ordered pizza and i was gifted this gem. My friend came over every day just to play tony hawks pro skater. Damn..
FF8 will always have a special place in my heart. It was my first Final Fantasy game. I played it on PC on the family computer. I come from a small Eastern European country and we didn’t have a lot. Video games in general are special to me, but this game I’ll hold closely forever. It would be amazing if they remade it with today’s graphics, but in a world of remakes lately, with how things have gone, I’m not so sure it’s a good idea. The original is great. I gotta replay through it again sometime soon. This game came out in a tough time right after the massive success of VII but it really is so unique and great. I love the style of this game
I KNEW something was up with the Laguna flashbacks, I remember getting the wine scene ONCE and never getting it again and having no idea if I imagined it or not. Thank you!
Bought FFVI/III on the day of release in USA. after the masterpiece that was FFIV/II, it was one of the easiest and best gaming purchases I ever made. Weird to hear it didn't do well..
give her 255 magic then auto-haste, clear all of her magic bar 1 meteor spell and watch angelwing kick ass for 75,000 each time and she cuts it instantly to do it again!!!!!
Ps vita has it too. Also don't get steam version it sucks the side bosses like omega weapon and ultimas weapon scale with your level on steam even tho it doesn't on the original version
Final Fantasy VIII is my favorite game of all time. I finished it a dozen of times and In thought I saw everything it has, but this video showed me I was wrong. I already knew that the Laguna scenes could have differences and I already saw some, like the one Laguna gets drunk and sleeps in Julia's bed, but I didn't know it had to do with the timber maniacs magazines. And about that Zell sidequest, DAMN, I never thought that this sidequest could have a different dialog. Thanks for the video.
It’s my first time playing final fantasy 8 and I’m in love with the game and the story, and I’d say the cinematic aspect of it is still good at least imo. I would love to see a remaster of this.
Am I the only one who geeked out when you gained access to Triple Triad in FFXIV, and the original PS1 version of "Shuffle or Boogie" started playing? It brought back SO many good memories of playing Triple Triad in FFVIII. Well played, Square Enix. Well played indeed.
I know it’s not true, but I like too believe that Rinoa is Ultimecia in an alternate timeline where Squall is dead, and rinoa allows possession so she can achieve time compression. All too bring squall back or go too a time where he’s alive.
The problem with that is Ultimecia did nothing to show any interest in Squall at all. If she was obsessed with him or shown anything, in action or in words, to show she was in love with him then maybe I would agree with you. Honestly they should have done that in the story bc at least it gives more purpose to Ultimecia other than just wants to compress time just for the hell of it lol.
@@smeefporkgood7790 True but that's not enough bc he is the strongest GF so it'd make sense Ultimecia would want him. It's not like only Squall knew about him either.
A little suggestion for a future video - given the recent announcement for FF XIV, maybe you could take a look at the history of Blue Mages throughout FF. The typical skills, some of the more obscure hoops you have to jump through for some of them, the different ways you learn the skills. Just a thought. :)
Tifa was split into 2 characters in Final Fantasy 8: Zell Dincht: Sidekick type character, boxer, similar abilities Rinoa Heartilly: Brunette light skin girl, name has heart in it, love interest to main character
Didnt know the last one, the laguna journal and the 50 times go in library bit. Awesome video as always! FFVIII may not be my favorite (3rd in fact) but it has my all time favorite cast ^^
Well… i knew all the facts but that’s probably because i LOVE FF8 ! Great video! And like the comment below i keep going back to replay ff8 even i completed it 100%. I replay ff7,ff9, and ffx aswell but there is something about ff8. Oof and the music SO GOOD. Loved the video, good information for those who like obscure facts :D
Thanx for this. Really interesting watch after 20+ years I played it for the first time. My favorite game (not just FF) by far. What really surprised me is the Edea fact. I mean, she's not just a character in FF8, the whole plot revolves around her! It's more like: "Hey, remember that witch character we couldn't use but she's awesome? Let's start the next game from there."
Love that bit about triple triad, that card game REALLY had me hooked. Wish i could have gotten a real life equivalent of it, but that probably wouldnt ve possible at this point
Absolute favorite, and it hurts when people bash it 😥
True here that's why I spent 10000s of hours of FF 6,7,8,9
I just thought he was very cool....don’t need nobody and I can take care of myself (squall leonhart)
Ff9 is my fav, as i got it on release and loved it, ff8 was first one i completed and the one i played the most out of all ff games, i love it.

This game was the game of my life. A powerful heartfelt story and a masterpiece of a soundtrack in memory I will never forget.

I still think Cid looks like Robin Williams.
RABtoons did a FF8 in a nut shell video. They made Cid look and act like Robin Williams throughout the whole video
I hear Cid was physically modeled after him so it's no coincidence
So does everyone else.

I tried to film it cuz youtube wasn't a thing back then lol
He was dead the whole time!
Exactly!
Exact same story here. The pizza that changed my life.
Lol hell yeah man, that and metal gear solid, I loved them demos, makes me wonder if they are worth a lot of money or not
I don't care what anyone says, I think FF8 is great.
botanbutton its a great game! Defo needs to be remade!
VII, VIII and IX, are the best out of all of them, but Final Fantasy VIII is my all time favorite
Big facts
I like it too.
It's the "i level, everything else levels" scaling that killed it. I like the game, but it was SO much better if you blitzed through it, sadly.
Gameplay is paramount but story is definitely more important than most other aspects. Especially in the case of turn based RPGs.
@@SlayerRunefrost ill play the devil's advocate and say the gameplay was actually pretty fun
It felt like I was getting more and more powerful with each magic Draw and by the end I had full stacks of the most powerful magics on Squall Rinoa and Irvine
My favorite Final Fantasy in this franchise & i make it a priority to play it at least once every few years. Great video guys!
Thank you Isaac! Do you 100% it every time, or is it all about the story? ~Darryl
Final Fantasy Union Mostly the story however with this new information i'm going to play it by finding all these new secrets i didn't know about ;)
Lol I do the same thing! LOVE this game. I do it all btw, 100%!😋
Zell was once in a Mentos commercial.
It's definitely a black sheep if you just came out of FF6 and FF7.
Kieran Sampson I had the same kind of experience with 7. After 10 I went back and retried the PS 1 games but 7 was the one I tried and didn't like.
I have the same story for Dragon Quest 8. What the hell was my young self thinking. Lol
In greek it is Δευτεραγωνιστης.
And then Τριταγωνιστης like Thirdagonist
Loved the piece about Zell and his secret loving admirer, that put a smile on my face (so sweet!). I enjoyed this video. I honestly only knew about Julia, most of the rest was discovered today right here.
That questline is one of the more obscure ones in the franchise. Even the GameFAQs board didn't really document it fully until the past couple of years. (The GF boards for these games are usually the equivalent of think-tanks.)
Same goes for the Protect Ring quest in FF9, which I assume will get a mention in the FF9 video.
Yeah I never knew about the Zell one either.
Has always been and always will be my all time favorite Final Fantasy. The music, the story, the junction system, everything.
My first Final Fantasy love, and the one I always come back to. Such a great game, vastly underrated.
12:20 *FFVIII has more Star Wars references than any other Final fantasy game.*
Scuse me sir, but the entire plot and premise of Final Fantasy XII would like to have a word with you:
A boy dreaming of flying away from his home comes across an excommunicated old war veteran betrayed by an empire, a roguish debonair smuggler pirate that owns a ship, copiloted by his "furry" compatriot, they rescue a princess that has plans to take down an evil empire and they all go on the run from the evil empire to bring the plans to a rebellious faction in order to take down said empire...
oh and Penello is there.
The entire plot to 2 as well..
XII, yes. 😂
It's basically fantasy Star Wars!
So Vaan is Luke Skywalker?
Mine as well, I played it over and over again. Also the Tony Hawk Pro Skater demo.
Don't forget that Kitase debunked the Squall Is Dead fan theory. With laughter, at that.
Most people don't know that.

Unlike so many of these types of videos, this one actually contained some facts I wasn't aware of! Well done.
8th fact: Triple Triad shall forever topple Tetra Master. This is a fact.
Tetra Master was stupid.
Tetra Master, Blitzball... There's no minigame like Triple Triad. Fact.

Saying this as someone who has 9 as their favorite Final Fantasy game: Tetra Master is dumb and the game does a terrible job of explaining the mechanics to you.

I know it is borderline controversial to say it, but this is my favorite FF of the franchise.

Low key one of my favourites of the series!
My issue with 8 is the magic system. You were better off hoarding spells and playing the game pure physical.
You do not stand alone there.
I didn't care for FF8. People accuse Cloud of being emo, but he isn't. Squall is but not Cloud. And Zidane is a pervert giggity
Cipher Strife a man who's attracted to women in a normal way is considered perverted now?? U buggin. Come off it.

No need really. Aside from the overworld graphics, I think the game still holds up quite well today. It has aged quite beautifully IMO.

Also gotta say I didn't know the Final Fantasy Tactics reference with Orran being the creator of Triple Triad.

Interesting that this video would be the first thing i see when i opened youtube after playing final fantasy 8 on my vita lol.
Great video! Always brings a smile to my face when this game gets some love :)
Regarding the music in this game, there's one thing I noticed long ago: if you listen to The Man With the Machine Gun and compare it to Fire by Takayuki Miyauchi (specifically the intros of both songs), I always thought they sounded strikingly similar. Now, the latter song is REALLY old and it's probably just a coincidence or something, but give it a listen and judge for yourself.
Why isn’t this game on PS4 already!!?
Apparently they lost all the code.
Yeah they did.
Rushed? Lost code? are you joking.

Those were some noteworthy facts. I particularly liked the Dollet demo music, Timber Maniac and its influence on the Dream Laguna, Rinoa inspiration and the Star Wars ones.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for posting about my favorite iteration in the series
The best Final Fantasy game in my opinion, great vid!
It's a fact, not an opinion. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
@Decadent Descent Ha, that's rich considering how FF7 fanboys will praise the game based on nostalgia alone. But no, FF4 was my first in the series.
@@Demokaze Low key I like FF4 way more than FF7. I love FF7 but FF4 imo is the true FF of the early games.
I would put 1-6 as early games, and would then agree that 4 is the best of that group. 7+ though, I'd put 8 as best.
😳 Didn’t know that stuff about Raijin, Fujin, and Edea either! lol
Thank you for actually talking about things that are actually obscure knowledge. It's nice to actually learn something from videos like these.
Who’s here after FF8 remastered was announced ?
FF8 is my favorite game, period, but it's been a while since I've played it all the way through. I didn't know a few of these.

But all's well that ends well =]

“The eighth game in a series arrived hot on the heels of the previous game in a series. It was called the seventh game in a series.”
i don't know where did you get this information, but, someone give him a medal, he deserves it. This kind of information needs a lot of time and research.
Yes. More FF8 love! Since Square Enix won't give it any....
I did some looking and it seems that the issues is one of two things. Either they lost the code to the sands of time(which does actually happen from games of this era) or a rights dispute with the music. Either one is stupid.
guess you were wrong about that :P
Starting the video talking about the ost is dangerous, i had to pause and go listen to it and couldn't stop.
With it being my favourite Final Fantasy game, I thought I knew a lot about VIII - however I learned a lot from this video. Great job!

Rinoa has the highest stats because she's a sorceress, you know, the most powerful beings in the game?
give her 255 magic then auto-haste, clear all of her magic bar 1 meteor spell and watch angelwing kick ass for 75,000 each time and she cuts it instantly to do it again!!!!!
Except she wasn't always a sorceress. She gained that after being possessed
I'm so happy you talked about the Pizza Hut demo! I still haven't fully played 8, but I sure did play that demo a million times as a kid
Curse you, I dunno about that Laguna and Zell.. so now I need to play again :( but I have the disc no more :/
Rinoa remains my 1st game love.
you can buy it on steam
Or use emulator hahaahha
Final Fantasy VIII it lives on in my heart
It’s my first time playing final fantasy 8 and I’m in love with the game and the story, and I’d say the cinematic aspect of it is still good at least imo. I would love to see a remaster of this.
The story line of FF8 will be on another level if the Rinoa = Ultimecia hypothesis is real.
Am I the only one who geeked out when you gained access to Triple Triad in FFXIV, and the original PS1 version of "Shuffle or Boogie" started playing?
It brought back SO many good memories of playing Triple Triad in FFVIII. Well played, Square Enix. Well played indeed.
It was a great bit of nostalgia but nothing beats going to a space station and playing by some crazy backwards rules to get one specific card.
Movie Man Reviews the only connection that I would believe they had is griever.
@@smeefporkgood7790 True but that's not enough bc he is the strongest GF so it'd make sense Ultimecia would want him. It's not like only Squall knew about him either.
i remember getting this demo and being SO excited about it. played it so many times whilst waiting for the game!
Did anyone else get recommended this video after the Remaster announcement?
Game Time with NateWolf yup lol
Accurate. Not complaining though XD
A little suggestion for a future video - given the recent announcement for FF XIV, maybe you could take a look at the history of Blue Mages throughout FF. The typical skills, some of the more obscure hoops you have to jump through for some of them, the different ways you learn the skills. Just a thought. :)
Tifa was split into 2 characters in Final Fantasy 8:
Zell Dincht: Sidekick type character, boxer, similar abilities
Rinoa Heartilly: Brunette light skin girl, name has heart in it, love interest to main character
I didn't know about the timber lunatics and Laguna thing so that's new to me, and I've played this game a lot, so thank you.
@John Smith yeah it autocorrect to lunatics didn't notice haha thanks for the reply though.
FF8 is a work of art ❤️
That dance was from Thriller.?? How have I never noticed that o0
Same here
Love that bit about triple triad, that card game REALLY had me hooked. Wish i could have gotten a real life equivalent of it, but that probably wouldnt ve possible at this point
