I'm impressed with the way the designers have made it appear smaller than it really is, and the clean lines give it a bit of class. Seeing as I'm only ever going to appreciate such a vehicle when it drives past me, it's the most important aspect.

"Seeing as I'm only ever going to appreciate such a vehicle when it drives past me, it's the most important aspect."
There's your first problem... you're already putting limits on yourself!
I'm an average person, lived in Cornwall (Newquay) most of my life. I'm not particularly academically inclined. One day I watched BBC Million Dollar Trader series with Anton Kreil (the series is on UA-cam) then I watched his video; *10 secrets to achieve financial success* which I think is THE most important financial video of a generation. Also watched the follow-up video: *The 5 Principles Behind the 10 Secrets* ... and now I'm looking into a fractional ownership of a private jet!
*As for the Rangy ...* I'm a Lexus owner through and through, but unfortunately the Lexus models I want aren't available in the UK (IS350 sport or IS500 and LX600) and so I'm now looking to one of the least reliable brands. I have friends that own various Rangy's and my brother-in-law and uncle are hardened Jaguar owners ... so I know that they put up with problems that I never have to with my Lexus. But again, Lexus seems to be on the decline in the UK, forcing me to look at brands I'd never even consider let alone be stupid enough to buy - German/German brands parading as British.

I was worried that JLR might react to the shock tactics adopted by BMW and Merc and go all ugly or glitzy to get attention. Amazingly they have actually gone for a cleaner, more elegant design over the previous gen car. Only time will tell if this strategy works in key markets, but for me its a winner - beautiful car and all respect to JLR for a top job.

Harry, your perspective on any car is incredibly valuable. However, I feel that rings true for no car more than the Range Rover. Great review and so insightful for those of us not personally familiar with the brand via ownership.
Side note: this is the first generation where I’d readily choose the regular RR over the Sport. They absolutely nailed this design. It’s incredible. The sport still looks great, but something about this execution looks so special and timeless.

Don't buy another Ranger Rover until Jaguar/Land Rover fix or recall a well-known and common exhaust manifold issue they don't want to take responsible for. This issue affects at least 4 models; LR2, EVOQUE, DISCOVERY, FREELANDER. They're having owners pay $7300 repair cost for a poor/defective system they are aware of. If "they" don't know, the entire QC team at JLR should be fired for hiding this fact. The exhaust manifold is a three-piece system; the flange(bolted to the engine head), exhaust pipes welded to the flange and the turbo. The problem is with the design of the exhaust pipes bent too close to the flange where there is no possible way to complete a full-circle weld around the exhaust pipes. This leaves an open space where vibration can start a crack separating the flange and exhaust pipes. At 48K, it can start to develop a small crack and when the crack is big enough where the flange and pipes are separated, you can smell exhaust leak/gas in the engine bay. There is a greater risk here where some owners faced dangerous situation when the engine lost power because the turbo finally seized up. I'm afraid to drive my car long distance until the entire exhaust manifold system is replaced. ATM, I can't afford $7300 repair cost so I'm only traveling short distance. JLR love to market shiny, curvy, and technology-advanced vehicles but won't talk much about reliability - they'll leave that up to be discovered by the owners. Would love to see JLR prove me wrong.

As a serial Range Rover owner, you must have put up with quality control ups and downs over the years Harry.
I worry that this car has too much tech on it, when it really needs about 25% of this equipment. Really, as you say, it is a wafter, that's what you want from a Range Rover....not the ability to drive the wheels off it on twisty roads.
For me its way too big for the Hampshire lanes, and tight car parks...its the size of an aircraft carrier! I prefer your L322 which I believe you still have. I also cant bear these nailed on I pads on the dashboard (which have way too many distractions from watching where you are going) or the cheap looking switchgear.
The price is madness too....the waiting list just shows how much spare cash people have these days - Land Rover relieving the gullible of their cash.
Having said all that Harry, I am sure you will be updating your car to one of these.

You’re absolutely right, it looks fabulous, and instantly recognisable as a Range Rover. Disappointing that it’s gained width, I know many successive models do this, but it will upset those who complain/moan/dislike what are classed as SUV’s. Also I know it’s not really what we watch the videos for but the scenery/countryside is beautiful, (I live in central London).

Thanks for another great review Harry. So much more relevant as you have the older version as your daily for direct comparison and the noise tests are again a very useful indicator rather than many reviewers saying its quiet. Handy when you have a farm to test out the off road capabilities on hills and grass with the all season tyres; probably as far as I would take my discovery 5.

The plastics with the smooth glass like finish are actually high quality injection moulds. Talked with an injection moulder years ago and to get these where they're perfectly flat, with sharp edges, is difficult to do. And with the smooth finish you need someone to polish the moulds by hand. It's a lot higher quality than the rough finished ones, which is a result of the spark erosion when making the moulds. Land Rover aren't cutting corners but giving you the very best.
As for the engine, I drove a Defender D300 with a similar engine. It's one of the best engines I've ever driven, and hard to believe it was a diesel. Those engines are the very best you'll find.

Do you live in Africa? If so, buy Toyota all day long. This car serves a completely different market and that level of reliability is not required (although yes it would be nice to have). To get something to be that reliable you have to make design compromises (i.e. simplify) - and the RR target market is not interested in those.

Thanks for the great review! Fully agree, it is a fantastic car. I was lucky to get a P530 delivered already and I simply love it. Unbeatable mixture of great design, comfort/luxury and up-to-date technology. It feels like a modern but very comfy home and in dynamic with the grumbling V8 it is even fun to drive on a sporty note. Thought I would miss the sound of an louder V8 like the RR Sport SVR, but inside it sounds very nice and refined and it suits the car very well. I really like it. Before I had an Audi SQ7, but the P530 is simply another level. Well done Land Rover.

Did you opt for 22" or 23" wheels? I heard from some reviewers that the 23" make it a bit of a bumpy ride.
Also, are you happy with the V8? I'm debating between that one and the 6-cylinder. Once again some reviewers said the V8 makes it a less smooth ride with little benefit over the 6-cyl.

Another excellent review by Harry. There is something very positive about this vehicle that until this review, I couldn't quite put my finger on. Amongst the four nations of the UK, there is something that the English were particularly good at, but had for a long time, had seemed to have been lost. That is luxury coupled with class and refinement. Coach-building was one of those areas. Take a look at the old traction engines, steam engines and early lorries. Almost all had intricate detail, polished brass and copper and go back to actual carriages pulled by horses which formed the basis for that detail and it is very apparent. This new Range Rover espouses those qualities in a very modern way. Even as a staunch Welshman, it is good to see that the English are finally showing their talents again. Whilst actually English, the original Defender had a very much Welsh character and its relationship with Wales was quite a romantic one. Perhaps because of its conception in Wales. This latest Range Rover however, really is very English - in a good way. It was the very last scene of the video that really brought it home for me.

I was lucky enough to be in one last week, the spool time of those turbos is just amazing. The interior felt smaller, like a Sport but in reality just as big as the L405. The ride was so composed, I do wonder though is it has lost the Grandeur and Stately fell of the L405. Saying that, it was just sublime.

Gorgeous car as all Range/Land Rovers are. I live in the Middle East (and have done for 15 years) and own a 2008 LR3 4.4 V8 HSE and 2013 Range Rover Sport 5.0 V8 Supercharged (also own a 2010 Ford Expedition 5.4 V8). Bought all second hand at 2-3 years old for 10-15 cents in the dollar. All great but the LR3 and RRS are both amazing!! The LR and RR need cared for like an expensive mistress but if you do look after them, like an expensive mistress, you will be rewarded with something beyond a mere driving experience. BUT a new RR is now over QR 600k (!50k sterling) here and simply out of contention even for an ex-pat. I will wait for 3 years and maybe buy one at 30 cents in the dollar.

A few days ago, I was driving down the highway in light rain when I noticed a blacked-out model was driving alongside me. I must say, it looked like absolutely amazing. It looked like it was a beautiful piece of black granite: strong, sleek, and imperial. JLR went the opposite way of other luxury manufacturers by choosing a more elegant and tasteful design that fits the idea of a luxury vehicle.

Great review as usual Harry. I would be interested to know how the L460 compares to the L322 in everyday and farm duties. I assume you still have your L322 for good reason? There seems to be a massive L322 following and many see it as the last 'proper' Range Rover while the L405 and L460 seem more car like. I get the L322 is a couple of generations old but I would value seeing a comparison video of it with the L405 and the L460. Many thanks.

This RR and even the RR Sport are now competing directly as alternatives to the Mercedes S Class and other luxury saloons and SUV’s such as the Bentayga. The Discovery 5 has all the ability, luxury and performance that 90% of drivers of such vehicles could ever really need. If only its back end was more classy.

No the average person cannot afford one that's for sure.
