Minecraft's History of Mods

- Minecraft mods in the last decade grew from basic commands to the Aether, RLCraft, Lunar Client, Badlion Client, and much more. So how did we get here? Let's look at the history of Minecraft mods.

bye love u
I remember how upsetting it was as a kid when my herobrine shrine or aether portal didn't work :(
Yeah, i remember trying to summon herobrine like it was yesterday.
I never really fell for that because I knew about mods
@Luca mayhem I did too, but I still tried anyway
@sirfarhantheone1 I was younger at the time
I always knew it was a mod.
Mind blowing how Minecraft was first a simple game and now it has endless possibilities either with mods or whatever you want
Watching UA-camrs play on pc with mods while being on ps3 was the biggest pain ever.
same with me but on xbox
Same
Fr
I still remember the moment I finally could get mods it was a great day
I really love your style of videos, it's like a minecraft infographics show and i love it. Keep doin it man!
Much obliged, I'll do my best lol
@@mcbyt I certainly appreciate the effort put in to your videos, i have watched them for a while now and wasn't subscribed!!!!
I decided to fix my horrible mistake
Haha, thanks so much
@@mcbyt I should be thanking you for making such cool content.
Lol, thanks so much for the praise, honestly
*insert mandatory Gregtech comment here*
I remember how everyone in 2015-16 everyone was dowloading modes of that type "Forest mod", "Ocean mod", "Water mod", "Desert mod", "Jungle mod", "Plants mod" and much more. All that modes was adding realistic mobs, plants and blocks. But everyone was downloading mods what was adding monster in to they world too while having that what I said before "Werewolf mod", (thar big ass crabs what was annoying), new dangeons, sea monster and etc. New worlds... Good old days...
Maybe you should do a part 2 of this video.
Ome where you talk more about influential mods like Industrialcraft, Gregtech, thaumcraft, and many many others
0:33 AH the nostalgia of little big planet 2 intro soundtrack
Man mod loader was nuts, so hard to use. You would have to manually replace huge amounts of folders, and would have to make edits, such as sometimes deleting a folder called meta-inf but not other times, and it was a complete guessing game as to what you should do. It makes it much easier for me to appreciate auto installs through curseforge launcher…
The aether mod is a certified childhood classic
I feel like we all tried to make a new “portal” in vanilla Minecraft at one point
haha, trying (and failing) to make an aether portal is basically a rite of passage
I miss the Portal Gun mod 😔
I hope iiChun comes back and updates his mods for 1.18.2 or a future version someday.
i remember i discovered minecraft through some guy's old videos. I don't remember his name, but i remember they had EE2 and set an energy condenser to make pink wool carpets at once point. I thought it was all part of the game, and was quite disappointed to not find any of it after scrolling through the item list.
after that, i found direwolf20 and got into modding the game, which i've been doing for like a decade now.
god, i feel old....
that littlebigplanet music is legit making me cry
I KNOW, like it's literally so good, not to mention nostalgia
Oh no.
The moment the LBP music started playing, I suddenly felt extremely old.
And now I want to play it again, but my copy is missing.
Pain.
Edit: I was kind of surprised that you didn’t mention the sole official mod. I can’t remember what it was actually called, but I do remember that it was mentioned on the Minecraft wiki page on mods.
The history is easy to learn when you've seen it with your eyes
I remember trying to build the aether portal in vanilla when I first started playing. I was freaking out why doesn't it work lol.
Huh amateur, i tried aether, dirt, diamond, and tried building the herobrine twice once with command block and once with steve heads and soul sand
@@kiro4279 I for some reason knew herobrine was fake since the start lol
honestly im kinda the same as you how i did not know why it didn't work.
ah memories
The algorithm gotta give this video a boost soon... Well made video!
Haha, thank you! And yeah, hoping it's just a matter of time
I found minecraft in 2009 and it was extremely simple. Played more in the earliest indev & infdev to old alpha. My favourite era was the beta tho. Especially beta 1.7.3
Wouldve liked more talk about iconic modpacks like mindcrack, tekkit, hexxit, yogbox, and mod launchers like curseforge ftb launcher tekkit launcher, which were essential to the upbringing of both mods and actual pvp clients as they are. But it makes sense why you didnt, its a video more focused on contextualization required to talk about pvp clients, not modding in general.
I guess I am an oldhead with modding the game since 2010 and have never even used a pvp client, times are changing for sure.
A big part of that is that I honestly didn't feel qualified to discuss them; I've used LabyMod, Lunar Client, Badlion Client, Forge, Fabric, and many of the mods I listed, but out of your list, the only one I've ever used was CurseForge. Quite honestly, I didn't even know Yogbox existed, so I didn't want to cover something with inaccurate information when I also didn't think I'd be able to well-integrate it with the video
@@mcbyt Yep, you would need to collaborate with some really old players to get a better understanding of the early-modding scene from 2010-2013, it was a bit messy but great. Trying to find sources for such foundational mods like More Creeps and Weirdos, clay soldiers and Tale of Kingdoms mightve been a bit difficult.
I can completely respect your choices in not undertaking a topic you had no knowledge of.
Also yogbox might not be that big, it was just one of the big modpacks I remember from back then, my bad.
Love the history lesson. And oh my, a man of culture I see. 1:14
Who is she?
Do you have the wallpaper?
I need it.
@@1Naif I don’t know that character
I'm a new subscriber. You have interesting content. I appreciate that you get a lot of comments and yet you still read every one of them. That's impressive!
Haha, thank you! I try my best, and I'm happy you enjoy the videos :)
i remember how dramatic a lot of the developers were. for one example certain developers who I cant remember put code that would specifically break everything if included with a certain mod.
Hello MCBYT, cool video. Brought back some memories.
Hello xinabox, thank you. Memories are cool, I watched Inside Out too
Hey, if Mojang added aether portal you'd probably have to go to hell to get to heaven.
2:37 I’m just watching the man struggling with the chicken while talking XD
dude fr alpha hitboxes are so small wth
Mcbyt new style? I fw it
Bot
super original concept and clearly a lot of research went into this. great video!
much appreciated!
I already have hearing loss do I need more?
I aint gonna lie, i miss bandage, flans and dayz mods
Aww, you should of brought up the rising to popularity MCreator, allowing anybody to make their own mods and release it to the public with ease
You could totally use multiple mods with just mod loarder it was just that not every mod was compatible with every other mods, buy you could still combine a bunch of mods as long as you were willing to manually edit config files to fix any block/item id conflicts.
The Aether mod is my favourite mod, and its actually one of tirst mods i played
finally someone made a video about it
1:31 wait wait wait wait are those BATTLETOWERS?????
When you said that Minecraft's code is jumbled around, it means that it's obfuscated. Mojang obfuscates the Minecraft game code, making it difficult to understand, to protect it from unathorized people.
Yeah, I know about obfuscation but it's an uncommon word so I simplified it a bit
Basic commands *shows a clip of Phoenix sc trying to /ban himself
I tried to play the old tech world for fun, un multiMC, not even load the Game. In my old laptop running Ubuntu, work fine, with world leaks. Sad that i can't play old modspacks.
It's kinda sad how the modding scene for bedrock (or I guess just pocket edition) was almost entirely replaced by addons, I really miss PE clients like MCPE Master and Multiplayer Master (R.I.P.) and Block Launcher, I guess ToolBox still exists.
horizon modding core still exists for bedrock
well addons are a much better solution for "modding" the game since they work on all platforms, and don't require third party mod loaders so it makes sense
@@XXLSteve And by "all platforms" you nean, PE and Win10 Edition.
@@tottallynotkong Which is based on Inner Core, which as advanced as it is, the mod loader is still extremely unstable and most mods are in russian anyways.
@@robertcioveie8113 I mean all platforms bedrock edition supports, which is: windows 10+, android, iOS, iPadOS, as well as some consoles like Xbox, PlayStation, etc...
Nice job on this one! The quality is improved, and that's awesome! Nice!
Really appreciate it, happy the extra work paid off :)
@@mcbyt Thanks!

Great video
the thumbnail tells me so much about this video. i used to try these on not modded minecraft and wondered why it did not work. but after a few years i figured out that you need to download a mod anyways 3rd person to comment and 5th comment
THUMBNAIL ISN'T DONE YET OH NO IT'S LITERALLY RIPPING OFF ANTVENOM

Lets be real here guys.. we all got baited by the aether videos 😂😂
this is a great video!
thanks so much!

i'm a bit confused by the repeated statement in the first few minutes of the video that developers would have to edit Minecraft's code itself instead of using mods... because that's, like, generally what a mod is? sure, Forge and Fabric provide assorted APIs that reduce the effort needed to develop a mod, but most mods will, at some point, have to edit or inject their own code into the vanilla game's code. i guess you're just referring to the lack of easy, standardized APIs at the time for registering custom items/blocks/etc? or i'm missing something
pretty neat video, though i also see some potential for a follow-up video covering the history of "server mods" (i.e. minigame servers like hypixel, mineplex, MCC) and maybe even bedrock edition's marketplace
I might have phrased it poorly here, but the way I interpret it, the early days were more "making modded Minecraft" than "making Minecraft mods". I think they basically copied the code of the game and edited it, instead of having any organization or way to do more than one mod at once.
Alright, that makes sense; thank you :)
@@lexikiq Haha, of course, happy to help :)
I do speak spanish; all I can say is that all those channels are aimed at children, so maybe as they are not familiar with lucky blocks, they find they interesting the same way I did watching spanish UA-cam 10 years ago, with 12 yo
Pro never mentioned crazy craft or hexxit or divine RBG
I enjoy watching your videos
Thank you for these :)
of course!!!
I think lucky blocks died with popularmmos SSundee also could have kept it alive if he hadn't died first
Burger King foot lettuce
It's sad you barely mentioned Fabric :(
True, Fabric is a very big deal nowadays but I think in terms of the history of how modding developed, it hasn't changed too much. Not to downplay its role in the current modding scene, it certainly is important, but I feel like currently it's just looked at as a less-utilized Forge alternative that only works on new versions of the game. In the future, it will be much more important.
@@mcbyt Yeah, I agree with you, Fabric doesn’t have very much of a history, but I still loved the video!
Yes sir
Did you heard of Redpower mod?
and what about LabyMod the client has been around since December 2015
Nice Video
thank you
why the antai cheat hasnt woked in 8 years good one
moding is one of the reason minecraft stayed and will stay popular
i miss cheatbreaker.
See me in history
this is so entertaining and informative!!

@@mcbyt np :)
You literally stated that history of hacks and cheating deserve its own video, yet you spent half of this video all about it.
Hacking was the smallest part of the video! It was just 2~ minutes long I believe, I'm saying a full 20-30 minute video could be spent just on hacks
@@mcbyt Okay. The mods I were referring to were the modpacks and how it kept evolving over the years with certain highlight mods such as AE2 or Tinkers Construct. There has been a lot of story of in itself. Maybe that is just my bias as that how I play Minecraft.
Regardless, encompassing the entire history of modded is better fit with series of long videos, instead of this short video you have here that has so much to cover.
I could cover it better with a long series, but then it would be rather boring, both to create and view. Compact and concise tends to be better for entertainment purposes
8:38 I remember ForgrHax
Put that to "a video i need" list please
i think this will be some good shit mcb
Very sad that there was no mention of the 1.13 forge problem that lead to the creation of rift, fabric & quilt, no mention of rift or quilt, only one passing mention for fabric, no mention of the rapidly decreasing quality of optifine in and after 1.15, and no mention of the multiple controversies regarding LexManos and forge.
Controversy was intentionally left out of the video, which I made clear with the lunar/badlion/cheatbreaker part. As for the other problems you mentioned (excluding optifine not being as good, just figured that wasn't really worth talking about), I have an entirely separate video planned to cover them in the future.
@@mcbyt Ok that's nice. About the controversies, it's just that I thought that you didn't know about them since you specifically mentioned the client controversy.
I didn't know a lot about them, but had heard of them. Just decided not to research further into it because of wanting to exclude drama
I’m a rapper and I’ve been thinking about uploading videos of myself playing Minecraft.

Lol clients fixed nothin
They actually have been a very big help for servers that adopted the anticheat. They aren't perfect, but bring cheaters WAY way down
People have found ways to turn of the client side anti cheat
Yes, like I said, it wasn't foolproof. But if you turn off the client anticheat, any server that requires it is now unplayable
@@mcbyt No you can add some dlls to make you bypass with the anti cheat on so you are right it makes it harder but still possible
Well, either way. I don't claim they're perfect, but they were very much a step in the right direction
