Archie treated Lionel the way he did out of ignorance and being slow to accept that the world was changing. But he didn't hate Lionel, in his mind he was being respectful and cared for him, but just thought there were still supposed to be boundaries that white and black people just weren't supposed to cross. If he really hated Lionel he wouldn't even let him inside the house, not even to work for him.
Greatest sitcom ever. 50+ years later and you still find yourself laughing out loud. Norman Lear was so gutsy for not shying away from any subject matter at the time. Edith’s deadpan delivery of “I didn’t know you was Jewish” was hilarious too .
Greatest comedy show ever! As a young black kid my grandparents loved this show. I was so young and couldn’t understand why, they were ahead of their time! Master piece!
I really miss real Tv. We only had 7 channels back in the 70's and they were the best times in my life being able to watch some of the greatest series ever made. Now we have hundreds of channels and none, nor all combined can stand up to those wonderful simple 7 channels I grew up with. Only set back, had to go outside to turn the dam antenna.
"Edith, you of all people should know I'm not Jewish!" In other words "You have seen me in my birthday suit. You have seen that I'm not one of the chosen people because I'm not circumcised! And you are the only one who has seen me that way so you of all people should know I'm not Jewish!"
@@szzk7937 Not all Americans were circumcised. My dad wasn't and he was born around the time Archie was. My 2 brothers (born in the 50's) were. But babies can't be automatically circumcised, the parents will decide this for them. My mother worked in the maternity ward at the hospital and once mistakenly wrote down that a baby boy was to be circumcised but the parents were still undecided. He was circumcised and my mother could've gotten into trouble for her mistake. Luckily she didn't.
Carol O'Connor was a dyed-in-the-wool Liberal who didn't have a racist bone in his body, but he certainly knew how those guys acted, and did a great job depicting their ignorance. As for Mike Evans, his breaking the third wall and giving a side glance at the audience whenever Archie said something bigoted was great to watch. Two fantastic actors in their primes.
🎉 Rest in peace and birthday wishes to Mike Evans. 11 3. Who would have thought a writing class with Eric Monte would lead to television immortality We are forever proud of their talent Rest in Respect
The thing I didn't like about the Honeymooners was they weren't very well off and the trip to the moon threat. I notice Fred never said that to Wilma. I gotta give it to Carrol. Both were great and timeless.
When Archie said to edith You among all people should know I ain't a Jew, He was pointing to something intimate only a Wife would know "circumcision" But they did in such a classy way in those days
Question. Sarah was Abraham's wife. They existed 800 years before Moses and the Jewish faith. So how can she be Jewish or her name be Jewish? Just wondering.
I'm trying to post some of these pages with segments of All in the Family on Facebook, and they've been pulling them down. I think some right wing people know we're laughing at them.
Edith, Mike, and even Archie are noticeably different people in the first season. The producers of the show decided to change them in the second season. I like these first season characters better. Edith is much less docile in the first season and sometimes makes wisecracks to Archie. Mike is far less sarcastic towards Archie than he became in the second season, and Archie is much more of a "hard hat" type than the oftentimes whiny character he became in the second season. The ratings skyrocketed in the second season so apparently the public liked the changes that were made to the characters in the second season.
Mike: Look at that, look at that! See the way he uses his hands when he argues? 😂 Edith: I didn’t know you was Jewish Archie: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!
Lionel and Archie have one of the best relationships in the show.
True and Archie really does care about Lionel, and Lionel is good with dealing with Archie lol
That's what makes the show in the early years special.
All Meathead wanted to do with Lionel is virtue signal.
lionel is making fun of archie and archie doesn't realize it; I guess you could call that a relationship...

Jean was awesome as Edith.
After all these years, this scene is still just as funny.
Perfect scene. Would have been awesome if Lionel exited with "shalom"
I heard it wrong. I fought he said Shalom.
I rewound it it back and he says so long. lol. I really thought at first he did say Shalom.
sounded like he said "So long" no shalom ..
Good call!
I was thinking that!!!!! But, it turned out pretty good anyway... eh.
Love Lionel's sense of humor.
How these people performed like this without losing it is beyond talent.
Discipline 🙂
@jerryabrowne Yes,When Archie was introducing Sammy to Lionel Mike & Gloria. Rob is grinning trying to hold it in.
What's wrong with it??
@@Tommy-bj7wn: Nothing, why do you ask?
@@jerryabrowne What do you mean by "those people" 😆
Lionel is hilarious ! Edith as well. 😂
I love all in the family my favorite TV show ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤📺📺📺📺📺📺📺📺📺📺
I love Lionel, he's great at getting to Archie, using the best psychology. 😅👍
and Archie had no clue that it was happening.
@@jimklipper6022 Great scene & great acting

Lionel is hysterical-“Ya know for when I’m with “my people.” Followed by the eye roll. I’m dead.
I grew up watching this show with my mother. It was funny then, and I still watch it to this day and still laughing.
Lionel sure knew had to get to Archie ... and Archie was clueless about what Lionel was talking about

IZZZZ GONNA BE LECTRICAL ENGINEER
😂
I'll never forget that.
"I'm gonna be a electical engineer."

uh no, all americans were circumsized as well at the time, Just not in Europe.

Edith trying to give Archie a heart attack: I didn't know you was Jewish🤣🤣🤣
I love when Edith chimes in and says I didn't know you were Jewish. The way Archie flies off the handle is hilarious.
Gloria laughing behind the napkin. Carroll played the part awesome
Look at his hands 😂
The Lionel that's on this. I think there was another, but this one is my favorite.
LOVE Edith's response!
"I didn't know you were Jewish."🤣🤣
Lol you can't help but love the way Lionel lead's him on.
Awesome scene 😂
Lionel was a great actor, loved the guy.
Sally Struthers is trying hard not to crack up
One 😂 of my favorite episodes....
Pioneer show.different times.😊

If he wasn't racist then he certainly wasn't a liberal.
Archie broke the 3rd wall all the time. RIP Carroll Mike & Jean.
"David and Sarah, two Jewish names" "David and Sarah two names right out of the bible which was nothing to do with the Jews" I love Lionel's suit.
Yeah but he should have worn the striped one
Or the checkered one. Wow that line killed me. Lionel’s fast eye rolls kill me.
“Archie asks Lionel his opinion on woerk”
LOL, that NY accent.
Jean Stapleton hadn't found her character voice yet
Until season 2
oh to have comedy like that again.
I love Lionel. A "lechical engineer" 😂
Lionel was something loved him
That was awfully nice of Archie to give that boy that extra change to help him out.
You can tell Archie loved Lionel lol
Classic TV
All in the Family is on every Sunday for 2 hours on Me TV .
Funny how we are still dealing with the same issues in 2024.
Skinny Rob Reiner before he liberated his massive appetite! LOL!
Love it! ❤ 😂
The Honeymooners and all in the family 2 of the best
Archie was one of a kind
This needs to be on tv 📺 today
I'm honestly surprised UA-cam doesn't block some of these clips
Please don’t give them any ideas. I enjoy these clips.
it's an iconic tv show. Actually making fun of Archie in a loveable way.
All in the Family taught the absurdity of prejudice, stereotyping, etc.
PooTube has been changing over the last several months. Only time will tell if it's political or not.
I just watch a vasectomy here on youtube. This ain't nothing to cry about.
Archie being ignorant and harmles and Lionel being intelligent and placating is so well written, then archie using Yiddish, its unifying.
Archie was just pure gold.
I liked Mike Evans and he was taken way too young.
Agree 100% . Damon Evans who replaced him on the Jeffersons was no where near as good…
@@davidarmitage289 Well he did come back to the Jeffersons.
Edith Bunker before she became a cartoon character with the high screeching voice.
"Bunker" ain't exactly (Irish) Ya' know!! 😆
Lionel's father has a lot of the same beliefs as Archie.
love this show to funny...archie is funny😅😅😅😅😅😅 lol
I love their chemistry ngl
This might have been the only time where Archie's parents were still living before being retconned... 2:50
Moral of the story don't talk religion or politics with people you don't want to argue with

Watched as a kid with my family in 70’s ,we loved All in the Family, we aren’t white.
Lionel: Are you Jewish.
Archie: Oy gavalt.
I am in a dilemma here, I swear, I don't know who makes me laugh more, Carrol O Connor in All in the family, or Jackie Gleason in the Honeymooners.
Both Carroll, Jackie.
The thing I didn't like about the Honeymooners was they weren't very well off and the trip to the moon threat. I notice Fred never said that to Wilma. I gotta give it to Carrol. Both were great and timeless.
😂 HILARIOUS!

yeah they hadn't found their groove yet.
It couldn't be the first episode because the Jeffersons didn't join the cast until the second season.

I didn’t like Edith in these early episodes. She didn’t seem as friendly or warm as in later seasons/episodes.

Rewrite the title. Archie wanted to know if Lionel thought him prejudiced, against non-whites.
This was a great show its a shame in today's society This show will be BAND
Lionel was really sexy and cool.❤
God I miss those days.
Odd timing for this clip.
Why?
Will you keep your draws on.
It's drawers, not draws.
"Black 'lectrical engineers"
Well...how many?
Hilarious

Mike: Look at that, look at that! See the way he uses his hands when he argues? 😂
Edith: I didn’t know you was Jewish
Archie: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!
What happen to show's like this look what we have today
But Alf Garnett was Jewish
That really is a nice suit that Lionel is wearing.
Lear always liked to inject something about the Jews in All in the Family and especially more Archie Bunkers Place, which i thought was tacky.
Seriously? Archie had awful opinions on every race and religion but you found the jewish remarks tacky? Jesus f#ckin wept!
Why?

This is how I never became a racsist, by watching how stupid Anchie was.... Go luck with Trump, concern from Canada.
