  • Heart of the Machine is the latest from Arcen Games, developers of AI War & The Last Federation among other titles. The publisher is Hooded Horse, known for Against the Storm, Manor Lords, Terra Invicta, etc. HotM is a unique strategy/simulation hybrid, and this demo will be part of the Steam NextFest starting June 10th.

    Who are the game-headhunters of Hooded Horse? how come every game this company snipes to take under it's wing is pure gaming revolution? terra invicta, manor lords, falling frontiers, against the storm , give these guys a raise asap.

      Based on the sales pitch on the Hooded Horse website, they don't actually control the salary or creativity of the developers. They merely exist as a publisher that helps developers sell their game (for fee, of course).
      Basically, the developers focus on developing, and the publisher focuses on publishing, and they both do great jobs. This is in contrast to the majority of recent "AAA" titles, where the publishers, stockholders, and the "experts" they hire have more control over developing the game than the actual devs.

      @@r3dp9 i know, that's why i said headhunters, the guys on the lookout for great games to publish, all the HH games i own, i knew about them before HH aquired them, seeing the impressive and unique catalogue of hooded horse, i believe there are people with very keen eyes on what strategy-folk like me want to play. they are spot on with every damn release, the manor lords tech demo alone has me for 250 hours and going.
      It's absolutely insane, not even slitherine has dreamed of releasing such innovative games. I'm ranting, sorry.

      I agree completely. They are obviously very good at what they do: the dev of HotM speaks very highly of them. They're a great counterpoint to the 'gaming sucks nowadays' crowd. Some publishers (and devs) know how to do it very well.

      @@strategicsage7694 i know brother, i think as long as they stay to niche strategy/tactical sales with these prices and dlc ethics, will never go out of business. We are few but a hungry bunch, especially with these new toys the make :D

    I've been waiting for this one for a long time. It's definitely going to be an acquired taste, and a tad niche, but I already knew that. Novel and unique perspectives are quite the treat to experience.

      Yep. The first time I tried it the first few hours were painful and I wasn't sure I was ever going to 'understand' it. Improvements have been made since then, but also there's the usual Arcen thing about having to teach your brain to forget it's pre-conceived genre definitions, since they're about to get shredded :)

    Ahhhh I heard about this one!!! I'm SO glad to see it from you!!!! it was really a fascinating idea of BEING the AI rebellion in a way that seems like it might actually be done well.

    Nice to see a new video from you Sage, and really interesting to see this game in an advanced stage. The early concept, which I think you also presented, was a fascinating one, and this looks to have gone in a new directions since. I wasn't expecting what superficially looks like squad elements.
    On a superficial level, I have to say that although the game looks relatively polished, I don't love the aesthetic: typeface, colours, balance between background and foreground elements. The bright purple opaque UI backgrounds are a bit hard on my eyes even for a taster video. But then I also didn't like the look of AI War 2 (compared to 1), even with the saturation turned right down. Maybe Arcen is just going against the dominant trends in video games.

      Thanks! Yeah basically 95% of what I said in that initial video has changed, it's not real-time anymore, tactical combat was a lot more involved and time-consuming before, research was totally different just to name a few. But the themes/setting and very much still there.
      In terms of the visuals I can't comment intelligently; if I were ever to rise to the level of having a bad sense of graphics/aesthetics, it would be a dramatic improvement :). That's just not in my skillset, and I couldn't tell you what the dominant trends are there if my life depended on it so I don't notice the variation there.

      @@strategicsage7694 Mostly from one of their other projects of similar ambitiousness ending up that way. Also, I vaguely remember hearing something about how this very project was indefinitely postponed, but either that changed or I was mistaken.

      FWIW it's gone through a lot of changes, many times; it used to be real-time at one point and that just really didn't work, the way research is done was completely different, many other examples. Took quite a while for Chris to eliminate what he now considers to be 'less fitting' ideas on how to make it work.

      It's not possible to completely avoid violence; you can minimize it in a number of ways. In particular the early tutorial sections have scripted fights to teach you how the game works
