Music video by The Who performing Substitute. (C) 1988 Polydor Ltd. (UK)
Roger Daltrey's presence is electrifying. Effortlessly cool.
I've always loved the kind of "homely" cool presences of Moon and Townsend.
I degress
Even though Moon is desperately trying to upstage him
Entwistle the coolest cat there
This is the definition of an iconic song.
Kinda racist but

Keith Moon died young of a drug overdose. One of many from the time period.
@@jadudar What?!
Never get tired of watching and hearing Keith Moon play the drums. Wow.
He's not even playing the drums here. It's the studio version, Townshend and Ox are playing their actual parts(Ox looks to be faking some of it pretty blatantly) ans Keith isn't even playing in time he's jjst messing around knowing it doesn't matter. Amd that's just who Keith was.
@@ArcticCircleBrigade You are absolutely correct. The track has acoustic guitar in it and Keith is playing an electric in this video. Of course, Keih overdubbed an electric part in the recording so there is both...
@@ultramusicman Keith? Since when does HE play the guitar?

Moony isn't even trying to mime playing the drums in this, just takin the piss. Brilliant.
Has no hi-hat either.
And Roger & John have no mics🤣🎤
Great lip synching by Daltry btw😉
of all of the great bands of the 1960s, the Who are my favourite band.... because, .. instead of songs about peace and love .. they sang about dysfunction

Good to have Peace and also reality of chaos
It's taken me 61 years to realise why people like The Who so much.
That’s okay. We knew you’d come along eventually. Have a great day.
Glad you've figured it out!
it took me less than a year but yeah this band is fucking fantastic :)
one of the best songs ever

@@helencampbell2064greed. A simple, yet brilliant song. BTW, it's Daltrey.
I agree, they're definitely my favorite band of all time.
Unbelievable that word would be so popular these days who before its time .
The Who were thoughtful, intelligent, edgy, straight ahead rockers, sometimes 'mods,' and each member was a master of his instrument. For Pete and Roger, their voices were also their instruments. Pete's songwriting often showed a superior intellect. This band was not afraid to push the boundaries of propriety. Just look at the cover of their album, Who's Next. I became a Who fan somewhat later in life, introduced to them by a dear high school friend. Getting to know the progression of the Who's music has been a great journey.
Don't miss 1970 Live At Leeds..my fave!!!
I am a german WHO-Fan since beginning. In 1965 I wrote from Germany to the Magazin NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS in Durham/GB and asked for a free copy. I got it and found an Advertisment about a Single-Record "I can't explain" by a band named THE WHO. What a funny name I thought. In a Record-Shop in my hometown I asked for this one, but without success. Some weeks later I heard at night by RADIO LUXEMBURG the Record. and THE WHO had won a Fan for ever. Radio Lux. was the only Record Staton with good Rock-Music at this time we could hear here in Germany. AFN too.

No one can be substitute for The Who!!
No one rights like that.
Peter Noone cannot be a substitute player in The Who.
I hope some of my students are watching!
There's not one band in 2021 making music as vital as this. The mid to late 1960s and 1970s will never be repeated. Unparalleled.
Yes there is. You need to listen to more bands.
@@paulcollins5586 I receive new music every day. You need to develop better critical listening skills and a higher bar. There are no bands today that are on par with the major players of the 1960s or 1970s. ZERO. There are no Led Zeppelin's, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyds, Black Sabbaths, etc. I stand by my statement. Name a new band that matches any of the above. I love some new bands, but no one will be listening to many of them 50 years from now. "Substitute you for my mom, at least I get my washing done" - priceless line
In the 60s, I was always puzzled by this line. I thought it was strange if his girlfriend did the washing better than his mum, as this line implies. Only recently did it occur to me, perhaps the writer of the song was one of the people who confuse "substitute" with "replace". "Replace you with my mum" would make much more sense - although, of course, it would not scan!

The Who, The Kinks and The Animals were the bad boys of their era, underrated groups by far.
Underrated!? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
On the contrary. They were rated very highly.
Don't forget the Small Faces
Hmmm may be no one knows them now(3 generational difference) doesn't mean they weren't popular in their primes ( they were all popular)
No. None of those bands are underrated. You people are starting to forget what word means.
The Who was so much more than a mere rock band...they were a four piece avant garde symphony orchestra whose art was best appreciated live at 150+ decibels!
It's simple, drum, bass, guitar and vocal, simple.
I was today years old when I finally caught the words "my fine lookin' suit" is really made out of sack. Thanks, Roger.😅
When we hadn't a care in the world and England was rockin.
The Who my all time favourite band.
I never saw anyone hold drumsticks like Keith does.
if you notice he turns his sticks around
It looks like he's just mucking about but that's actually how he played.
Since he isn't really playing, is he just screwing around because it's a sham?
I'm not surprised...that is terrible. He does all the work with his elbows instead of his wrists.
He was pretending. It was his version of humor. Much admired by those who don't mind cringing simultaneously.

Bought this record the day it was released. Must have played it 500 times over the following weeks. I lived for The Who in the 60's and I still do today. First saw them live in 1965 and last saw them live in 2015.

The vibe of the Who was such that it transcended generation, ideologies and boundaries. The greatest compliment that could ever have been paid to Roger, Pete, John and dear boy, Keith was that the punk movement gravitated to them.

A classic London song ! That's where I was born, saw The Who loads when I was a young man, and this song rings true now that I'm in my late 60s.
This has everything, angst, humour, passion - I defy anyone not to be energised by this.
And just a smidgen of sarcasm in the mix, hahaha
The Who, was/ is staggeringly brilliant.
Definitely my favorite song of THE WHO 🤟
John entwistle is a legend! The man that founded the Who and the greatest bass player of all time.
I dunno I'd say it's a tie between JE & the Stones Bill Wyman
As far as the British Invasion bass players go
@Knut Rosetten Jaco was technically better but not musically. Jazz solo music sucks, no matter how much of a master the player is. Its meaningless. Bass only sounds meaningful in a supporting role in a song. Same with drums. Jaco isn't well known for good reason.
@Knut Rosetten He isn't a better player musically because he didn't make better music. Using the bass guitar as a virtuoso solo instrument is in bad taste. That's not proper to bass guitars. He wouldn't have wanted to play in a rock band and he wouldn't have fit in with one. He was a jazz snob. Its much better to be a good player in a great band that plays great songs than a virtuoso who plays experimental music that has no human interest or expressive meaning.
Ever heard of a nice Jewish boy by the name of Geddy Lee?
PEOPLE DO NOT EVEN REALIZE HOW GREAT THE WHO WERE !

John Entwistle was The who, Its his band, He founded the who, And was probably the greatest bass player that ever lived, he was brilliant, He never got the credit he deserved.
Frank Jackson bass players always get the shaft. Especially when they're the strong silent type like John, real shame
John was a master. But It was Roger who started the band under a different name as lead guitarist, then later vocalist. John was recruited by him. John brought Pete to Rodgers attention. He was added. It has always been Daltrey's band. But John was so very important to their sound.

The Who were formed by John Entwistle And Roger Daltrey! They formed the band at school, Roger bumped into John after school and John had a homemade Bass, then they started the band and got Pete in, This was years before Keith moon was even on the scene.
I agree to extent, because old Pete did like most of the writing and composition of the songs .
He had a lot of medals too.
John got my heart before I was born

What an absolutely brilliant song. Well crafted, catchy, great dynamics, great harmonies ,great lyrics .I think it's Townshend's best
This song was released 4 years before I was born. I am now 52 years old and still love the Who. I grew up listening to them, and their songs never get old or out dated. I was never really a Beatles fan, but the Who, that is a whole other story. I saw a commercial when I was about 6 or 7 on TV advertising a the Who album and there was footage of Pete and Keith smashing their instruments up, and they had me hooked!
