I wonder if they were originally four regular great rockers, and then an evil wizard came and put a curse on John and Keith so that all of Johns energy and enthusiasm ended up in Keith. That's the only explanation I can come up with.
Or perhaps Keith simply liked uppers while John liked downers?

Keith Moon had this reputation for powerhouse drumming which bordered on overplaying at times but he’s playing to a sequencer here and is bang in the pocket. In fact, Moon was the first rock drummer to work with sequencers on Join Together, Baba O’Reiley & Won’t Get Fooled Again. He was a much better musician than people usually give him credit for.

Listen to an isolated bass track on "The Real Me" to get how easily he cruised up and down the fingerboard, and bent notes. He made it sound so effortless and fluid, and it wasn't showing off, it's just that with only Pete's guitar to play against, he had the leeway to fill empty space with purpose. It's only now -- and I've seen this video for years and even "The Kids are Alright" in the theater -- that I'm realizing that they filmed a performance specifically for this video. This wasn't them mimicking the words to the song, they performed this. So we got to see an actual performance of a Who song as if we're in the studio that day. And they did this back in 1978, before MTV really got going. What a wonderful gift, an original performance that will last nearly forever.

From what I’ve seen of other stuff around this time, he had lost it a bit. This particular performance is an exception, as it was probably a bit easier to manage him in a studio setting, but he definitely wasn’t the powerhouse he was in the late 60’s-early 70’s. To me he is the best and most unique drummer ever to pick up sticks, but the drugs and perhaps everyone telling him how great he was had started to diminish him as a player by this point.

It's sad to think that when Rock started in the 50's with Elvis, Chuck,Buddy Holly and so forth the 60's guys Dylan,Stones,Beatles were able to go way beyond them lyrically, and musically, and The Stones hit their pinnacle with Gimme Shelter. there's no way they could top that song like The Who did with Won't Get Fooled Again it's as powerful as it can get, and this equals that, but there is nowhere to go but down. The Stones and Who did a lot of great stuff after those, but the days of topping what came before are long gone.

What I love about The Who is that they're not a one man band. There are a lot of bands where people only know the singers where with The Who all the boys are known. Roger Daltrey - brilliant front man and singer, Pete Townshend - energetic guitarist, John Entwistle - too-cool-for-school bassist who made it look so easy and then there's Keith Moon. Don't need to say anymore, absolute madman and one of the best drummers of all time.

@@tommy2917 Yes, they did a good job. But Townshend's songs have been covered by many many people so I'm guessing that he could have found plenty of other people to perform his songs with him and still been recognizably The Who but without Pete Towshend you don't have The Who anymore. You have 3 talented musicians/performers looking for something to perform.
