I really wish the clueless producers who fund most d-d/fantasy genre movies had as much respect for the material as these modest but delightful productions.
I was not prepared for the reveal that the entire time Max was picturing his two admired companions as his parents. That is just really good storytelling right there.
This is one of the most beautiful things I have 'Ever' seen. This could be blockbusting with just what they have right now OMG. LOVE the honesty and humbleness in this. It's AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! Acting first class; effects just enough. Story, power emotion! yeah, these guys got it all. JOB WELL DONE!
This is actually so good, deserves way more views. The reveal of what his parents looked like at the end was so deep! It's a fantastic depiction of how a simple game of d&d with friends can be so much more than just a game.
I'm scrolling through the comments looking for words like these. I've watched a handful of fantasy shorts and fan fiction, and this one is one of the best I've seen. Smooth transition between scenes. Comfortable natural dialog. A dash of CGI. Just amazing. Well done.
I agree. Sending it to my family so they can understand why this hobby means so much to me. It got me through bullying in middle school in the mid 70’s and later in my life. I am retiring soon and home to have time to DM my world, again.
In the end, this is what D&D is all about. Not the quest, the characters, the fantasy world, but getting together with friends and connecting to real people while using your imagination. And let's remember to give proper credit to J.R.R. Tolkien, who created the high fantasy genre, the quest, the team, the characters, etc., that inspired so much of the D&D world. Let me close by saying that I rarely am moved by a film, but I was moved by this one, by it's very real human drama that is at the core of the D&D experience. Thank you so much for touching my heart today.
I'm at half way, and I'm already tearing up. This is what d&d is all about. The escape from this world that can be harsh and one sided. A world where the imagination rules. Also, fantastic acting. Even the rogue, reflecting the nuances of his players shyness and unfamiliarity. The girl whose acting shows how her players takes the game seriously, and the fighter(?) and his players total comfort in the game world. Amazing work. If only this was a longer production, then we wouldn't have needed to rush that end encounter.
Thank you so much, very happy you enjoyed it and took away what we had intended, it would be a dream to make more and turn this into a series eventually!
@@crimsonarmadillo7531 you’re very welcome!!! D&D is the best game in my opinion. I’ve tried to get my friends and family to play. My wife and I play solo (changes some rules around) she plays two characters and has to follow each of their flaws to help make her decisions. I know D&D is a group game but I’m older now and don’t have too much time, but her and I have fun playing. This video had us both in tears it was so moving and cute and meaningful. This is why I love this game. It’s a chance to be who you want and sit around a table and have an awesome time and have lasting memories. That’s what life is about making memories with friends and loved ones. Thanks again for your video I liked subscribed and shared it with my twin hoping he will get the itch to play lol
This was amazing! But you really got me when you showed the boy in a wheelchair. My daughter's been in a wheelchair for 8 years, and I introduced her to D&D shortly after she got sick. She loves playing D&D as a Elf fighter! My heart swelled with emotions for the rest of this video. So great!
This was just so incredibly charming, I found myself smiling at every part. Im not really the review type so I'm struggling to find the words to describe this, but I wish the best luck to the director in all of their future projects.
Been up almost a year and just now comes up on my recommended?..I'll pass this on to my group of old timers, there are 5 of us and we all started in the early 80s...Thanks!.
And me as well, James - we're getting too experienced (e.g., old) to have to wait a whole year for such quality entertainment. I will like, subscribe and share with my group of fogies: this is what the game is all about, and having the two story lines makes this video so much more enjoyable, and brilliant, and amazing. Hats off to all involved - if we can crowd fund the next chapter, please advise an old goat how to do such a thing. Again, thank you for this brilliant piece of film making.
This is so wholesome! A fellow player showed this to our groups and I agree with the people here, this needs more views. It made me smile to see that moment the new player does something epic to impress the veterans that have seen it all, and that little high five gave me flashbacks. Those kids are adorable and inclusive and really made me miss the days when Gate Keepers and other elitists weren't such a problem. The Game Master was a pretty good story teller for so young (handing out props!). Just imagine the epic things that character could come up with when she's older. Showing the parents as the avatars of the other characters was an excellent way of showing how a child's imagination and a game with friends can be healing.
So many of these DnD fan films are bent around sending up or over-emphasizing the tropes of the game not the stories. This was quite lovely and refreshing. Captures the spirit of the game yet still being a film. Well done.
What a feat! I'm beyond words! You guys managed to conceptualize the very essence of D&D. A gate between Reality and Fantasy which you enter by carrying with you everything you are. No matter which side of the gate you enter or leave, you will always carry something from the other side with you, while leaving something else behind. Amazing!
Holeeeee CRAP! I teared up at the end of this. It’s awesome. I think I would watch far more of these than any Hollywood produced movie. This film is VERY well made. I think the kids acted pretty well for this. And I got a huge kick out of the off-screen battle with the one guy running for the hills (or the ruined walls, as the case may be). I would love to see more of this in a series.
This is incredibly awesome! You really got to the essence of DnD and tabletop RPGs in general. The bonds, the shared memories and the lifelong friendships it forges. I am not ashamed to admit that this brought me to tears. Thank you for doing this!
This reminded me so much of the first time I played D&D... And it happen under very similar circumstances. Really hit home for me. I'm still friends with them to this day and it's been almost thirty years.
This hit me in the feels! It is such a wonderful expression of what it means to play D&D, and how it can help you cope with the struggles of day to day life. I will definitely share this with my friends.
What a great story! Really struck a chord with me. My best friends that I played in two different groups with all had some home troubles. The game helped us bond as friends and put all of that away from us. Our characters were stronger than their problems and it helped us to become stronger than ours. Such a fond memory of my early teen years playing D&D with some great people. The greatest role playing game on Earth helped me make some of my greatest friends on Earth and have the best fun on Earth. Lovely short film.
As an indie filmmaker of about 10 years and a D&D player of over 40 years, I can easily say this is the best D&D movie I've ever seen. The way you were able to flip between the players and their characters was perfect. This story definitely needs to be continued.
This short captured everything about why I play this game - well done! Thank you for making this and putting so much effort and love into this project.
There is a sweetness to this video that rings true. Life can be such a trying place and having played D&D for, wow...over 40 years now, I can attest to the fact that it offers a much needed escape and teaches valuable lessons. Bravo! Well done :)
Good performances! Usually independent short films like this are let down by wooden/amateurish performances, but that's not the case here at all. You can tell a lot of time and effort went into this production. Probably more expensive to make than most people would realize too.
Friends for life thrown together by accident - both in realm of fantasy and real world. Vastness of many domains at their feet - oh lucky traveller, there is your path ahead, clear and bright cause there will always be a hand to guide you and help if needed. You can battle every peril cause you just opened the gate to the mightiest force in our universe - imagination! Welcome, welcome:)
This just made me feel good all around and the angst of the parents having problems and Max being able to immerse himself into a fantasy world to get away from it. Making new friends and his parents worked things out. All in all a wonderful fan film. I hope to see more of the kids adventures! :) Well done!
I really wish the clueless producers who fund most d-d/fantasy genre movies had as much respect for the material as these modest but delightful productions.
Hopefully one day, a producer sees this and can open doors for us to make more the way they should be made! Thank you for a lovely comment
but I want a jarjar binks like bard!

I like the way you did this, with the interwove stories of the players and characters. This is what a movie based on an RPG should be like.

The characters they played were the ones they looked up too, just so happened to be their parents.
Brought a tear to my eye. Beautiful and charming story capturing the essence of DND. Amazing job by everyone.

The care that went into this film was amazing. The real life touch made it so much more emotional, and the end with the parents was perfect.
