      Troll harder. Storm Crow is the definition of power creep. A 1/2 for 1U with evasion in BLUE? That's absurd.

    I remember going through old spoilers because I was trying to brew in Modern. I came across this Future Sight spoiler thread. The first comment was:
    "I predict that, one day, Tarmogoyf will be a good card."
    The reply: "Yes, as soon as Squire is playable in Standard."

    I remember when Spiritmonger was printed just seeing that it was a 6/6 for 5 and it had regenerate for B and you can change its color and it gets bigger! Back then you didn't get a 6/6 for less than 6 mana without some sort of downside let alone multiple upsides. Not nearly as impressive nowadays (good old power creep) but I kind of expected it to be on this list.

    I only played Magic competitively for a short period of time, during the Invasion block. So hearing you guys talk about Lin Sivvy and Flametongue Kavu was very cool to me. I typically ran a Fires deck, which Flametongue fit perfectly in. Especially once I added Shivan Wurms and could bounce them back for a second round of damage. Rebel and Counter-Rebel were 2 of the biggest decks I went up against, but I was able to beat them most of the time thanks to the amount of burn I had in my deck (Flametongue Kavu, Thornscape Battlemage, Ghitu Fire, Urza's Rage). I was typically able to stop them from accumulating more than a couple Rebels at a time.

    No Masticore? Granted, Morphling was on top of Urza when Saga was it, but Masticore was played in every deck that existed in standard for the entire time it was legal.

      Yep Masticore was the reason that control in Urza's standard could beat aggro, which was what meant that there was some answers to the combo decks of the day. Masticore should have replaced Morphling as it took some time for Morphling to replace Palinchron in accelerated blue.

    arcbound ravager should have been on the list. It was so over powered that standard and at the time extended rules had to be change in order to stop that card. Even in modern the ravager deck has more banned cards just to keep it under control.

    As of 2019
    Tarmagoyf has died
    Bob is currently no where near the top slot though it does beat Tarmagoyf by a good margin.
    Snapcaster is only challenged by Deathrite Shaman
    Deathrite is banned in multiple formats.
    I personally believe Snapcaster deserves the slot as best creature of all time, despite the bannings of deathrite shaman.
    No one cares about Masticore at all.
    It is very interesting how Snapcaster mage and stoneforge mystic are the most iconic, powerful creatures today, but still didn't make the cut, despite being more powerful than most or all of the list.

    There's so many creatures that you could consider for this list, and it's cool that everyone has their own opinion. I myself might make an argument for Emrakul to be in here, just because the decks that have the option to sneak or accelerate him into play are nigh unstoppable when they do, and he ends games so quickly once he's out. He's a dominating force in Modern because of Tron (though he's not the only card that makes that deck good by any means), and he's arguably the card that makes Sneak and Show so good in Legacy. All these others certainly deserve consideration too.

    • @DarthMaIak
      @DarthMaIak 10 років тому +5

      Emrakul is far from format warping though- it has no place near the list.

    Arcbound Ravager should have been on the list, probably replacing Flametongue Kavu. Anyone who played in 2004-2005 remembers how unstoppable that 2-drop was. To quote Osyp Lebedowicz, "Arcbound Ravager is like a fairy godmother. It sits on your shoulder and says 'You play badly, but I don't care. I still love you.'" And you would still win.

      +Kel Tsang Hippy was a big deal, but the Serra Angel's direct competition for best creature was Sengir Vampire. You have to remember that back in the day there were a lot of weak creatures that you basically just used as blockers against your opponent's better creatures until one side got the advantage. They should have mentioned Juzam Djinn, though.

    This is an accurate retelling of popular opinion at each time period, but I've always felt that Goblin Recruiter was better than a lot of these cards. How many of these cards can you say are banned in Legacy? (One. The answer is one.)

  • @ArsenicDrone

    When they hit Psychatog, I noticed that they skipped Spiritmonger. It didn't have the same impact on tournament decks as others on the list, but I remember plenty of hype about being the best creature of all time, and that lasted for a while.

  • @SpiderWaffle
    @SpiderWaffle 10 років тому +1

    I too was waiting for stoneforge at number 1, it probably should have bumped serra, there were always other creatures on par with serra like the various djinns.
    FTK should probably be on this list, but closer to 8, during the FTK standard domination reign Brian Wong once jokingly told me "FTK is the best magic card ever printed" but he was only half joking, he gave the periphrasis that FTK had a much greater impact on standard than black lotus ever had on any format.

    I'm surprised Delver didn't make the list. It's such a widely played card in literally every format it's available in except maybe commander and vintage, and is the spearhead card of one of the most played modern, pauper and legacy (At one point standard) archetypes Grixis/Izzet/Temur Delver. I dunno, I'm not going to argue the versatility of Deathrite Shaman (Which has always felt a bit overhyped to me), but Delver also defined standard when it was released, and just seems like on of the more infamous, widely known, and format defining magic cards. Good list nonetheless.

      It's been a while, was Goblin Lackey on this list? I know the cards very good, but Delver has just been used in so many more decks, and is a very iconic magic card, probably more so than Dark Confident, which we really only see played it modern, and to a small extent, Vintage

    • @robertjamesmcleod
      @robertjamesmcleod 7 років тому

      To sort of quote LSV: "There was a time in which if your deck couldn't answer turn one lackey it wasn't competitive in legacy." Not his exact words but you get the gist, plus Deathrite Shaman sees play in almost 1/3 of legacy decks, if you can run it you do not the same with delver

    I think very few creatures actually deserve the title. They have to be powerful for an extended period, they have to define multiple formats.
    In that sense i would nominate:
    Serra angel
    Morphling (Masticore comes close too!)
    Psychatog
    ....and maybe tarmogoyf
    Delver and Deathrite shaman have not had enough time to prove themselves. Although i think they are probably the two best current creatures.

      It wasnt the best creature of the era, though. Confidant is a better card overall, i think.
      I believe its important to note, Mystic didnt get banned because its broken, it got banned because the things it could do were broken. If batterskull and the swords didnt exist, mystic wouldnt have been good.

    I like how they agreed that the new Legend rule, which allows something to exist at multiple points in the multiphase, possibly even close enough to fight itself, makes more sense than the old THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE rule. If anything, the newest rule makes the least sense in all aspects other than people whining about having to waste their card as a kill spell, or just being on the draw. A rule that just says fuck all past science fiction and paradoxes makes so much sense

      It's true that Sengir didn't see much play, but it is a flying 4/4 for 5. The vigilance ability makes the Serra a lot better, but Sengir was a solid creature back in the day. Also Shivan Dragon was good too back then.

    With the hindsight I have now, I'm surprised Delver isn't included. It's probably the most played creature of all times, being a force in pretty much any format it showed up (vintage included ffs!) and basically warping an entire deck archetype - tempo - around it.
    I'd say it rivals with Deathrite for number one.

      Sorry, but 100% incorrect, as it targets and can thereby be responded to, whcih mana abilities may not. It's why you can exile the land with another Deathrite in response, or remove the target from the grave in another way, such as Scavenging Ooze. All three of Deathrite's abilities can be responded to.

      recapdrake Ill accept that living end is still a deck, but youre absolutely full of shit if you think youve found a list that is objectively better without the elf. If they unbanned it tomorrow, every deck that could play it, would. It got the ban for a reason.

    Why are all the good creatures so old? Aren't there any amazing ones that can be used in Vintage that was printed in the last couple of years? And not Deathrite Shaman who can be killed by a Flametongue Kavu.

    • @JessicaZane4realz
      @JessicaZane4realz 9 років тому

      Will of Yawgmoth I need Vintage worthy cards. Legacy and Modern aren't as skill oriented imo. But I guess for a sleigh deck that'd be ok. The last creature worthy of Vintage was Griselbrand for Griselbrand/Oath.

    • @nobonaga22
      @nobonaga22 9 років тому +1

      If you're looking for recently-printed vintage-worthy creatures that can't get axed by an FTK, you're pretty much stuck with True-Name Nemesis. Honestly, almost all of the recent creatures which have entered vintage are value-generating one and two drops like Snapcaster Mage, Young Pyromancer and Deathrite Shaman. One of the only other new creatures I've seen recently in vintage was Notion Thief in a BUG Fish sideboard. I dunno, there may be more, but I'm more of a legacy player and don't really pay too much attention to vintage in general. I'm not a fan of playing in a format with Time Vault. :P

    • @JessicaZane4realz
      @JessicaZane4realz 9 років тому

      nobonaga22 Trust me, playing against Time Vault isn't a problem at all when you're both playing Vintage. The matches are always fair. I guess the only new card I found was Griselbrand to replace my Emrakul in my Oath deck.

      Jessica Zane Blightsteel Colossus and Master of the Pearl Trident are pretty strong in Vintage, as far as I can remember. I wouldn't be too knowledgeable, though, since I mostly play EDH.

    SFM and Arcbound Ravager seem like controversial omissions (“I'm going to write a book on how to win a Pro Tour for Dummies. The first page is buy Arcbound Ravager!"), but I think the recent card that seems to get overlooked in these discussions is my favorite creature of all time, Restoration Angel.
    Extremely strong in multiple format-leading Standard decks (Delver and Pod, and then both Junk Rites and UWx control), also essentially the reason that Naya Pod is a playable deck in modern, as well as being played in UWR and other fringe decks. Not played in Legacy, sure, but for me secretly the strongest creature of the last two years.

      You are completely missing the point of the video. These are the most influential creatures in magics history and you want to compare them to Vexing Devil, which is barely modern playable and did practically nothing in standard. I hope you're trolling.
