As a culture we know so little about nutrition. On top of that we want cheap food, taste above nutrition. The science is in. Lots of vegetables people, more than you can imagine. What Americans are deficient in is fiber. Can't get that in a greasy burger, fries and pizza.

I did the Keto diet after being convinced by various videos on UTube...I lost 38 kg and went to my Orthopedic Surgeon for a knee replacement. He first had a comprehensive blood test done. Big shock! My cholesterol sky high, cardiologist is now doing ECG, heart sonar, etc. Blood count big problems..doctor now to test for anemia etc. I googled "the best diets in the world" and keto came last. Keto restricts food groups and the public is not told the truth about cholesterol, high saturated fat increased uric acid and too little carbs for brain to produce sufficient serotonin. Keto means lots of bad saturated fat, lots of cholestrol...I did the egg fast..up to ten eggs per day..one egg contains 140 g cholesterol..I am supposed to do only 200 g. Keto is new and no comprehensive long term research has been done to verify this theory...I wish I could discourage people not to do it..and I say shame upon those who sell books and wrong information..lots of people are going to have long term damage done to their health. My dietitian gave me an excellent fruit and vegetable based diet which compares to the Mediterranean diet....I love eating the healthy foods....Keto is a definite scam.

I watched very close family members die of diet related diseases, I was on a similar path. I watched the documentary, Forks Over Knives (on Netflix), the information clicked for me. I no longer experience the pain, inflammation or anxiety about why the heck I kept gaining weight and getting sicker. The Adkins type diets did not work for me long term, after awhile on them I did not feel well and would gain all the weight back plus more. Eating whole food with no added processed oils has been the best thing I could ever have done. Dr. Greger is one of those who have shared information and made this the easiest way to gain my health, lose 70 lbs (and keep it off) and experience freedom from anxiety over how I fuel my body and will thrive for all the remaining decades of my life. It's so simple. Eat whole food plants, no processed oil and voila! Health. Thank you, Dr. Greger!

I was on Keto diet for 6 months, never lost weight, my blood panels worsened and I ended up in the hospital for 3 days with HBP spikes of 230/100. All that fat entered my cells and made me insulin resistant. I have been vegan for 6 weeks now, lost 10 lbs, feel great, BP is 110/68 (in that ball park), my diabetes is better (not cured yet) and I'm taking 10 less units a night, hopefully hoping to cure diabetes. I weight 169 currently, 5 foot 3 woman, age 58 and have been horribly sick with diabetes for over 7 years. I excercise, to stay limber, but realize that I can NOT burn the calories of a meat eating diet (high calories) so I have gone vegan. Not everyone's metabolism or body reacts the same to diets, life style changes. My father had coronary heart disease (as all his relatives, most died early, very barrel bellied fat, diabetic people), he had 3 bipass's, pace maker, diabetic and overweight. Eventually the hospital visits killed him with Mrsa. If I could have turned him Vegan I would have tried, but he was a meat eating, high carb, x-alcoholic x-smoking fool, and he probably wouldn't have listened to me anyways. But I'm listening Dr. McDougal.

I am on a keto diet, by bloodsugar is stable ( I wasnt diabetic), but lost 15 kgs. I've followed Dr. Michael Greger's advice now for a year...I've never felt better. Everything I eat is plant-based. 90% of what I eat is organic/unprocessed. He has made me vegan without me even noticing and that's amazing. Before - I wasn't ill and had no health issues, I just wanted to lose a bit of fat around my waist. Now, I have so much more energy and feel 'lighter' inside. I started basic fitness at home because I felt I needed to get rid of the energy and now, five months later, physique looks as healthy as my diet. Don't get bogged down in all the misinformation out there. Have a good look around his site over a few weeks because the clinical studies he finds are eye opening. Finally, I have settled in a happy place where I eat as much veg, nuts, seeds and fruit thoughout my day to get me close to my daily calorific intake and have a cheeky whisky and some dark chocolate & ginger (from Aldi!) at the end of the day watching evening TV. Seriously - I've never been happier.

You didnt lose no 100lbs in 4 months. You are lying. That simply is impossible. For fat anyway. You number one would have to be extremely obese. 300lbs plus. And B. Most of that loss would have been WATER WEIGHT.
Because when you starve the body of carbs. It breaks down the glycogen stores in the muscles and organs to get that sugar the brain needs and craves for optimal function.
Ketosis is an unhealthy way to lose weight. And is not sustainable longterm. And the damage replacing the body with fat as its energy source. Over carbs its PREFERRED ENERGY. Can be seen in hospitals and grave yards all over the place.
Using just FAT as a longterm energy source often comes at a heavy price. Some may get lucky and dodge the bullet. But the vast majority are heading for a WORLD of health problems doing this.

I just wrote underneath a video I couldn't even finish listening to by Dr. John Whitcomb "How to beat Cancer with Food' who goes on about the value of the ketogenic regime - "You scare me Dr. John. People are going to walk out of your seminar and change to a ketogenic diet. It's totally irresponsible". You know, I'm not a scientist, maybe, but I read and listen to these people, and when something is right, you just get that 'yes!' coming out. All of Dr. Greger's work does this for me, without exception (oh except for one when he said he puts a sweet potato into the microwave for a quick meal. Aaaaagh!) but his research is sooo thorough (thanks for putting the time in, Sir) and utterly convincing. Love this guy. I'm having a hard time accepting what he says. First, he claims low carb diets are a fad that keeps popping up. Then he says it's high fat, high protein diets that are really bad for you, then he points to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes being on the rise. Problem is, the countries that have the highest instance of these diseases eat tons of processed carbs and the majority of people are protein deficient.
For decades, the AMA has been recommending high carb, low fat diets with low protein. During this same period of time, carb consumption is at an all time high. Also during this time? The meteoric rise in the very diseases this doctor talks about, apparently blaming it all on the very low number of low carb dieters. Confusing, don't you think? We've been told by people just like this well meaning doctor to eat more carb, less fat, and less protein for decades and we've all gotten fatter and seen more cancer, more diabetes, and more heart disease than before they started claiming this was an ideal diet.
Go read Gary Taubes' excellent book "Why we get fat", where he uses science to explain that the science behind the high carb diet is faulty, unproven, and somehow continues to be parroted by otherwise brilliant doctors.
Or don't. Believe this guy. He's skinny.

I love how he brushed off that carbs spike insulin by saying that beef increases insulin. Beef doesn't spike insulin, it's excessive protein that spikes insulin. If you ate pure beef fat it would do absolutely nothing to your blood sugar and would not cause your pancreas to release insulin. Of the three macronutrients (carbs, protein, fat) the only one to not affect insulin is fat and the worst one is carbs. It doesn't matter if you are vegan or meat eater or omnivore as long as you eat your carbs with tons of fibre (whole fruits and vegetables), eat a moderate amount of protein (one small steak not the whole tenderloin) and eat plenty of healthy fat (nuts, avocado, coconut oil and animal fat from quality animals) and your insulin will stay low and you will be incredibly healthy. If you eat carbs that lack fibre (potatoes, bread, pasta, corn, sugar) you will be unhealthy, not necessarily overweight, but unhealthy.

joegun525 I have personally seen an 81 year old man with type I diabetes return to normal blood sugar in 2 1/2 weeks, simply by eating whole home made food (meat, fish, nuts, non starchy vegetables, occasional legumes, lemons and berries), and excluding sugar, (simple) carbs, and processed foods. After a few days his cravings for cupcakes also went away. The vegans have a similar diet that also works by eating salads and a few nuts all day. Both diets function by cutting out the carbs and sugar, which spike blood sugar and promote insulin sensitivity. My diet is, I believe, more sustainable. While eating it the man was satisfied with the food, did not feel deprived, and we did not calorie restrict. He also lost weight.

I had 100% control of my Type II for SIXTEEN YEARS IN A ROW with diet, riding, hiking and swimming. Even after 2 ankle surgeries and near fatal complications of a DVT/PE after the first one, my sugar still stayed in control with medications (I lost almost all ability to use my leg for years) and diet. However, last year The Pale Mare (Menopause) came raging into my corral and the hormone imbalances that ensued caused my sugars to skyrocket then plunge to hideously dangerous lows of 20-30. I put on 15 pounds and I was a disaster.
The ONLY thing that dropped 30 pounds and got my sugar into control was a low-carb diet. Not NO carb but around 50 carbs a day. I eat little red meat, bacon etc. my protein comes from unsweetened Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, shakes, and occasional chicken or pork.
Test sugar 4-6x daily so I know what makes my sugar spike and it isn't steak. It's CARBS. Plain and simple. A few daily servings of frozen berries is ok. Spikes and lows all but gone. A1C 6.2

neptronix The insulin index is actually a real thing. It shows that the rise in blood sugar in response to certain foods is not always proportionate to the insulin response. For example, 200 grams of pasta had an insulin index of 40, while only 60 grams of cheese had an insulin index of 45! You can check out the study here: ajcn.nutrition.org/content/66/5/1264.full.pdf+html

nadja177 I know all about the insulin index and the GI index. I read that paper. And i don't understand why actual blood glucose readings ( the real figure you should be looking at ) effectively show the opposite.
I also know several former type 2 diabetics that are eating a diet is about 80% meat-based.. and that meat is typically beef. They are regularly posting blood sugar figures that are below non-diabetic levels as a result. They have discontinued insulin, metformin, and many other drugs.. I am also involved in a large community of people who have had the same experiences, a lot of them formerly type 2 diabetics which have been effectively cured by a low carbohydrate diet.
One of them runs this site:
      diabetes-warrior.net
I just hope you understand this: what Mr. Greger is saying is effectively that the sky is red. The study says one thing, using certain parameters.. the real world says the opposite, using more commonly accepted parameters. If Mr. Greger was an honest man, he'd acknowledge the latter. :)

Dr. Gregor is proposing somewhere between 10 and 20% (man) of fat, 15-25% of fat (for woman) and around 10-25% protein... the rest of it is carbs.
The main problem is not the quantities of fat after that.. it's the quality. Plant-base fat food are way healtier than animal fat. Even keto vegan are doing better the keto meat eater. Keto vegan will never reach the same amount of fat anyway then keto meat eater (if you eat whole food of course!)

I've been on a recommended diet for diabetics for the last 4 years since I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic and I have had not much success at all. In fact I've developed more digestive problems than before. The only reason I have pre-diabetes is because I have PCOS which is caused by a pituitary tumor (benign) which we discovered when I was 6 years old, its not likely that my insulin resistance was caused by what this man is talking about, I have hormone imbalances within my whole body not just insulin. To be honest I've had to cut out lactose and gluten because I physically cannot digest it, I feel worse after I have eaten those things. I have felt so much better after not eating bread and even pasta and high carbohydrate foods, it's only been just under a week since I started a LCHF diet which I am not following any sort of Atkins diet or something like that I am simply giving myself what I need for energy and vitamins and minerals. I do not feel like I need carbohydrates in my diet especially if my pancreas is trying very hard to cope with it, my body just cannot deal with carbs, so why should I be eating them? If people are lactose intolerant, they are advised to avoid lactose products, same goes for gluten intolerant. Therefore why is it any different with products that induce the release of high amounts of insulin in the body which people like me cannot use properly, which we then have to take medication to fix that exact problem? It just doesn't make sense to me, everyone is different and i think we all have different nutritional needs to keep our bodies functioning correctly. I certainly don't think that any diet plan can cure diabetes, I simply think that its a way of coping with a metabolic condition that certain people have. I have many things that I have to do for my health as I have many issues with hormones, they are out of whack and there isn't any 'cure' but just to mold my lifestyle into a way that works for me. I've tried the simply healthy eating lifestyle for many years and I have had no actual success not only that but like I said I have developed problems digesting certain foods, once I cut out breads and things like that I was a little better but not a whole lot.

Thanks, yeah I agree we are all different and require different amounts of energy etc. I had a break from my lchf diet mainly because on holiday there wasn't a lot of choice being on a cruise ship with my diet, I had to chose high carb foods. I still didn't eat things like breads and starchy vegetables (mostly potatoes things like that) but I had to snack on fruit and whatever veg I was given I basically ate other than potatoes. I was eating very healthy foods, I didn't eat burgers and chips like everyone else or cakes and sweets but even with snacking on fruit and things like that still put me back to old problems with not digesting food properly. I am now completely convinced that I just cannot eat a diet of more than 40g carbs per day, it just made me feel very lethargic and had very little energy. Not to mention headaches because I didn't think to bring my metformin, just in case, to keep BGL's maintained. I actually didn't enjoy the food one bit, since getting home I was sick for a week with a virus and couldn't physically eat anything liquid or hard so it was jelly and ice cream everyday, now I am finally getting back into my lchf diet and have missed it so much, I just feel like I am sleeping better, things aren't hurting as much and I don't have any dreaded heartburn like before, still the occasional hiccup but nothing unusual like before I started lchf!

People who have lived as long and as healthy as any vegetarian have lived eating both eggs and meat their whole lives ... so you are just pushing your opinion on people with scanty, misinterpreted and over-weighted proof.
I'd say, if you have certain health problems you can reverse them better, faster and more completely with a vegan diet ... but you seem to want to collect statements like this and them twist them to say things that the stats really do not support.
There is a lot to this subject, and the people who are the most fanatic really do not aid rational discussion.

The insulin spikes being higher with beef and fish was very interesting. People need to relearn what causes diabetes as they still think it's carbs.

As with so many Gurus there's not much mention of physiological variation. Many do not do well on low fat high carb, but the people that do really well on high carb seem to think the ones who don't are just undisciplined or somehow mis/uninformed. Plus atkins was into highly over cooked fats from questionable animals, that makes all the difference in whether fat is beneficial or not. People like to generalize but one has to look at all the factors as well as listening to their bodies individual requirements. So many seem obsessive in their limited viewpoints, but viewpoints aren't limited(except by the limiter) there are many MANY different valid ways to see each person and what they are doing and how it affects them personally, so many factors.

What is a "questionable animal" ? It's just a simple question. I'm learning.

There is no doubt that a keto diet with very low carbs will drop my dependance on insulin. Thats a lifesaver for me and many other type 2 diabetes sufferers. All you have to do is cut carbs and enjoy more fats.
