    I was 215 pounds (140 pounds in high school). I had Arthritis, Asthma, hay fever, diverticulitis, internal and external hemorrhoids, borderline high blood pressure, everything hurt and I just felt terrible. I went on the McDougall diet and lost 49 pounds. At 166 pounds my weight stabilized. All my health issues are gone. God bless John and Mary McDougall you saved my life. (Asthma sent me to the emergency room. )

    Thank you very. I am 67 and lost 40 lbs on the Starch Solution. During my lifetime I’ve been on every diet. Lost weight, but eventually it crept back. I hated the keto plan the most. I would always joke that I never met a carb I didn’t like so when I read that potatoes, rice etc would help me lose weight without counting calories. I was thrilled. It worked! I feel great and I am happy!

    This is the difference between knowledge and wisdom.
    Table sugar and salt may not be healthy, that is knowledge.
    But if adding them makes you eat the veggies, then do so. That's wisdom.

    I followed low carb diet for diabetes for 25 years even though I don’t like meat. A burger once a month maybe. Ate greens , salads, cheese, dairy. Lately I can’t keep my blood sugar in the good range , high blood pressure too. I don’t want to add medication either.
    Love hearing you talk about low fat, no fat. I’m on my 3rd day of rice diet. Blood sugar 101, blood pressure is down too. 5 lbs gone. Feel good on third day. I’m hoping I can be taking less meds soon, instead of more.
    I’ve never done low fat/no fat. I never understood how much it interferes with blood sugar.
    I can certainly do this diet, I’ve done 1 week fasts before. Good luck to me.

    In the American diet sugar is quite rare. It's much more likely to be high fructose corn syrup as the US itself produces very little sugar cane and has import tariffs. I love how Coke says "zero sugar" on their low calorie drink, but their normal drink doesn't have sugar anyways, it's all HFC. Other products like baked goods, candy bars, ice cream, etc. are very high in fat. I remember when I was in Southern Vietnam and sugar cane juice is the national drink there, they have a glass a fresh sugar cane juice with just about every meal and a sugar cane juicer vendor can be found on every street corner. Cambodia was similar. Obesity is unheard of in those countries.

    What Dr. McDougall says makes sense. But there are many doctors and cardiologists here on UA-cam that say the opposite, that meats and fats are good, and they back up their claims with studies just like McDougall does. They say that it's sugars and carbs that cause inflammation of the arteries, not fat. It's so confusing, who's right and who's wrong? I tend to lean towards McDougall though.

    • @g.e.boroush5176

      I understand why you are confused. But here is another way to think about it. Our next of kin, the chimpanzees, eat a McDougall diet. So do the majority of all of the grazing animals on earth: elephants, giraffe's, deer, elk, hippopotamus, cows (even cows don't drink cow milk after infancy :-), horses, antelope, buffalo, silverback gorillas, etc. Our genetic next of kin are the chimpanzees. There are some animals like cats that are obligate carnivores - but their intestinal structure is completely different than human beings. Their intestines are very short and straight and their physiology allows them to eat an animal-based diet. Their teeth are like alligators, made for tearing flesh. Animals that chew plants have flat molars like horses . . . and us. This is how I look at the information. And I believe Mcdougall is correct.

    • @leftyfourguns
      @leftyfourguns Рік тому +8

      The "carnivore diet" people cherrypick studies. What you'll see in the studies of sugar and inflammation is that it's the animal proteins and animal fats that exacerbate inflammation and high spikes in blood sugar from glucose. In a diet devoid of animal products, the effect of glucose on inflammation and blood sugar levels is not nearly as dramatic. Like Dr. McDougal says, it's FAT that is killing us. It's fat that is causing chronic inflammation and insulin resistance that in turn cause dozens of different deadly chronic diseases

    I've heard this a million times, and always love the light in your eyes as you try to impart the simplicity of the starch based eating plan to us stubborn people. Interesting, that all you want is our health, and we are so resistant. Last night I was on the phone with my son while preparing my meal. It was mixed rices, and French lentil cooking together, while I prepared my broccolini in some chopped onion sautéed in veg broth. My son talked about eating broccolini many times, but still eats his meat... Makes me sad that I can't get through to him on the plants only plan, but I have some weight to take off, and need to take care of myself. He lost a lot of weight eating meat, so it makes it hard for me to impart the wisdom of the McDougall plan. I trust that the info will come from someone else. Thank you for helping me since the early 80s.

    I love Dr McDougall and have lost a ton of weight following his way of eating however I have a question. If sugar doesn’t readily turn to fat (which i absolutely believe to be true) then how is it fattening at all? Is it a case of it doesn’t turn to fat but if you eat sugar then go to the gym you end up burning the calories from the sugar rather than burning fat already stored in your body? Think I might’ve just answered my own question? Ps. What about the sugar in dates? Pps. the McDougall diet normalised my super high blood pressure and diabetes type 2 in just a few weeks 🙏

    • @InnerRevolutionProject
      @InnerRevolutionProject 2 роки тому +23

      I am not Dr. McDougall but I think I can answer that.
      The mechanism of the human body for turning sugar into fat is very inefficient and 70% or so of the calories get lost in the process as body-heat. So in theory it is possible to gain weight with sugar but in practice you probably won't unless you eat like crazy amounts of pure sugar.
      But what happens when you eat sugar + a more high fat diet is what you said: The body will use all the energy from the sugar for the day and store all the consumed fat into the fat cells. So sugar is indirectly supporting weight gain, but only when consumed with higher amounts of fat together. When you eat a low fat vegan diet (like the starch solution) you won't run into this problem and lose weight, without having to restrict calories (:

    I have been plant only for a couple weeks now, and I think I am mature enough to stick to it. I feel amazing. I am scared to have my tea, because I love my Yorkshire tea with milk and sugar. Sadly I put around 1.5 TBSP of sugar in it. I know, but it's amazing.

    • @MaryDavidson911
      @MaryDavidson911 2 роки тому +2

      @Alberto Martínez Let me expand on what he is saying. First off, he said in an extreme case, where individuals are needing to gain weight, presumably as a dire situation. Perhaps you have a severely malnourished and underweight individual and they need to gain weight as quickly as possible. Your body looks at three macronutrients for its energy source to live on… Protein, fat, and sugar (sugar is also known as carbohydrates, it’s just that people use these terms interchangeably at times. Also starch can be used as well for this term). In regards to starch you have the subset where you have easy to digest starches (aka “simple sugar”, like white sugar or honey) or more-difficult to digest starches (aka “complex carbohydrates”, stuff with ridged fiber like grains or veggies/fruits) and so table sugar falls under the easiest to digest. Being incredibly easy to digest will come in handy for quickest turnaround of being malnourished or underweight.
      So of these three macronutrients, protein, fat, and sugar, sugar is the easiest to digest which would result in extrapolating the energy needed for the body to carry-on in the most efficient way. Also the least damaging to the body. Proteins would put excess stress on the body from processing it, and fat can frequently block nutrient absorption. If an individual is severely underweight the last thing they need is added stress on the body and the blockage of nutrient and/or energy absorption. Table sugar, quite literally, will allow the energy needed to feed the body and mind, in the least restrictive way. Least restrictive = less calories burned, which would equate in quicker recovery of severe underweight status. Dr. McDougall is not indicating (in my opinion) that eating 2000 calories of white granulated sugar (aka sucrose), is an optimal way to live your daily life and consume calories. Again, he did say in the case of an individual needing to gain weight, presumably because it is a dire situation of sorts. I hope this helps.

      That's why people should take matter into their hands and study hard science themselves: statistics, antropology and biochemistry.
      1. Statistics is going to help understand if numbers provided by studies make sense or are they worthless. That's why I didn't say anything about "nutrition" science. There are no nutrition studies available that have reasonable statistical quality. So based on available nutrition studies we cannot say anything about vegan, low-fat, keto or carnivore diets.
      2. Antropology, especially those chapters that work with isotope analysis. These studies help identify what people ate and what they evolved to eat during millions and hundreds of thousands of years (not just recent 10000 years history). And these studies show 70-80% meat in the diet.
      3. Biochemistry helps to understand how different substances work with each other in a living organism. In the contex of diet the most important buzzwords are probably: Warburg effect (glucose metabolism of cancer cells), Randle Cycle (utilization of fat and sugar for energy and their competition with each other), glycation (damage made by glucose to molecules of the human body).

    Sugar is the most important nutrient to give our bodies. Every system in our body relies on sugar. Our muscles are fueled by it, our brains are fueled by it, our blood is fueled by it. Sugar is simply just pure energy. We just need to make sure we're delivering it in the proper packaging.
