Grunge was so damn unique it seems like the mainstream made it almost conclusive to Seattle, there were so many good bands with that style
The pipeline from Traditional Metal to Post-Grunge is pretty funny once you analyze it.
Haha yes, but just wait till you see the next iteration...

As far as i remember from philosophy classes in my freshman years, achieving nirvana in buddism virtually means becoming disconnected from desires, needs, fears - from life itself and thus breaking out of the circle of rebirth (sansara).
I think, in this sense "Nirvana" really suits the band's apathetic attitude.
Instead of a subgenre, it kind of seems like grunge was just an era
This is the second time today the AI gods let me see a video the second it comes out. May it continue to happen! Just saw the nightmare video and I can't wait. Such a good album
Nice, and yes it is!
you could also trace grunge back to Pixies as they were one of Kurt's main influences. When they wrote "Smells like teen spirits" Kurt said that they wanted to sound like Pixies
7:20 aaaah! Someone fixed the notes Wayne played in guitar store stairway to heaven scene. Nice.
Your videos are incredibly well put together!
For me I describe actual grunge as a mix of alt rock and punk but soundgarden are mainly a metal band and so are alice in chains. Sludge metal came first and was invented by the Melvin’s and then they invented grunge too
i’m a simple person, i hear Acid Bath used in a youtube video i’m immediately going to subscribe
I wouldn't say the lack of grunge today is for the best. If anything, I'm more curious to what would have happened if the scene didn't sell itself towards what it was originally apathetic towards. Since punk and metal(for the vast majority save for a few recent bands) are the opposite of mainstream openly rejecting norms and praising individuality, I am curious what would have happened if they waited about a decade for the internet to really get its foot in the door properly. Since it was much harder to find more underground material back in the early 2000s as stuff got passed around physically instead of digitally. Even in the 90s, major players could tell the movement was losing steam by about 94 as Cobain planned for In Utero to be their last album in the direction of grunge and it wasn't too long till soundgarden split for a long while due to creative differences on which direction to go. Plus, honestly, after Layne Stanely passed away, Alice in Chains was never the same in quality and even struggled before then because of Layne Stanely and Jerry Cantrells addictions and opposite personalities clashing making production a mess. Maybe it was the apathy that led to fewer risks being taken as time went on, almost like we filled the qouta, so we're done kind of mentality meanwhile it probably didn't help that seeing the backlash stars like Marilyn Manson got for pushing the edge was never seen before as he became a literal scapegoat in the media from 1996 to about 2003 for everything "wrong" even though those wrongs have been in society for much longer than anyone cares to admit.
Stay tuned for the next episode. I do believe the Gen Z have created their equivalent to Grunge. I am gonna cover it, though I am making another video first. Also I was being a bit tongue and cheek with that ending. Grunge and Nu Metal got me into heavier music to begin with, so it'll always have a place in my heart. You are on point though.
Layne and Cantrell didn’t have opposing personalities, when Layne was sober they creatively meshed perfectly and brung out each others’ best. But Layne went off the deep end. Have you ever tried to do anything with an addict that deep into the hole?
So doom is the main guy sludge is the brother and grunge is the sister?
I'm by no means an expert or ear-trained, but I feel like by the mid 2000s a lot of the genres and derivatives just started to blend together into a combination of (post-)grunge, alternative metal/rock, hard rock and even punk in some cases
I agree. Then, after the 2000s, rock and metal just started to fall off the map.
@@fadedjate7230no, the mainstream just don't bring it back to the people
Something I don’t think you touched on that I’d say is an important thing to note, is the punk influence in nirvana.
Melvins does sound like it would’ve been the beginning of grunge but you let grunge fans tell you it’s Green River, Minute Men, Skin Yard etc.
Grunge is authentic and original in its own right and there are quite a few grunge revival bands around too. For me it's the perfect blend of punk band metal influences and to be honest, actually does have a heavier and more masculine sound then any of that glam metal stuff.
I feel that the Big 4 of grunge actually weeded out most of the substanceless metal such as glam and why we're only left with metal bands and styles that express themselves authentically and not solely to make money. The popularity of pre-grunge thrash (e.g., Metallica, Slayer) continued after grunge; so too did other authentic bands like Pantera and SOAD
When Grunge rolled around, American Metal was stagnant, and the heavier stuff from Europe seemed like a piss take, both musically and aesthetically...Metallica releasing their abysmal eponymous album in 1991 just made Seattle bands appear even better and more sincere about what they were performing...
I love the Black Album but I see why people hate it. More of a Hard Rock record. Way different from RTL and AJFA.
@@whatsinameme5258 Exactly...plus, I was a snooty 17 year old who wanted "HIS" Metallica when that came out hahahaaaa...youth can be silly...
Focused way too much on Nirvana, if you're talking about the metal side of grunge Soundgarden, AIC, Melvins, TAD, Skin Yard etc. Are much better and more representative examplrs
Love the video dude, Keep up the great work, I am so glad that I get to venture into metal with you. Could you make a video or something where you place Bands like Dance Gavin Dance, or Circa survive in the web of Metal, or What about Ice Nine Kills, I still don't really know if they're A joke band or not, Also what about Sleep Token, I think they're (kind of) alternative Metal, But what about their new songs, Like the Summoning, or Chokehold. But anyway, Thanks for the great videos, Very informative, Keep it up.
One more thing, My cousin and I are in an argument I think you could settle, Is the Band "Fox Lake" Nu metal or not, He claims that they'er not, But i think that they are.
Silverchair super slept on
Tbh nowadays I see grunge as sludge metal for people who couldn’t play sludge metal right. Alice in chain and soundgarden are favorites cause their the most metal. never cared for Pearl Jam and stone temple pilots. Nirvana still gets some spins for me but I’m not much of a fan as I once was due to me listening to more heavier and experimental music and not to mention the fanbase and hipsters killed the enjoyment for me.
There was a peak inn90’s.
What genre would you consider Nine Inch Nails?
Admittedly I have not listened to a lot of them but my guess would be Industrial Rock/Metal.
@@whatsinameme5258 You should listen to The Downward Spiral, it's really good.
To me grunge should fit
I love the YT Button censoring Spencer, lol
Also what’s hilarious is that you mentioned Tenacious D’s song. So like this video is about grunge. Nirvanas drummer is Dave Grohl. The Tenacious D song you showed literally has Dave Grohl drumming on it 😂 irony
It's not like I don't like Grunge songs. But I just never got into it
Occulteration guy: What is that fish cartoon used? It looks funny! I would like to watch it. Great video! I never really thought of grunge as absurdist before, but it makes sense. Grunge does seem to fit with absurdist ideas and meaninglessness.
The fish scene is a cutaway gag from an episode of Spongebob Squarepants.
@@whatsinameme5258 O.k., thanks!
@2:06 he killed it tho 😂
“They were jaded by what was sold to them compared to how things really were“
Dude, you just described Gen X to a T
Melvins were actually heavy as fuck.
Have you heard of skratch acid? I think i saw in an interview kurt saying that on bleach they were riping off that band. I relate the bleach sound more to a dark weird punk. Which is what skratch acid was.
Just gave them a listen. Interesting, I do hear some resemblance.
it's funny cuz I absolutely love Nirvana but I pretty much hate every other grunge band. Bands like Alice and Chains just sound like slowed+reverb hair metal.
Nu-metal was the best thing that came out of grunge
Yeah Nu-Metal Is basically just Jungle Grunge
Mother. Love. Bone? Maybe they were Glam. Or Alt Metal?
No more MOG?
This is still part of MOG. I just don't know if I'm gonna put it in every video title.
@@whatsinameme5258 you thanking for our attention without mentioning next time's genre felt as If it was MOG's last entry
I left it out intentionally, because it's all the comment section would be talking about. You'll understand when you see the next one. It'll probably seem out of left field. I'll probably go back to saying it in the next ones.
Grunge is more metal than ACDC

whatever..
Alice in Chains rules. Or at least the first two albums 🙂
Their first two albums sound the most hardcore but u could argue their last album (and songs) with Layne takes the cake
2nd
smashing pumpkins 100%, its not supposed to be metal or the gaylords will be offended
I didn’t even know sludge metal was a thing, and I always called AiC Sludge not grunge. And yes glam metal absolutely played a big part in AiC, their proto-bands Sleaze and Alice N’ Chains, were glam metal bands.
Edit: Also really fucking good job on this video, really love it.
