Shoegaze feels like there’s an intense beauty staring you in the face but it’s either unattainable or lost. The music being the hope/conduit that keeps you connected with it.
Omg yes!!! It definitely makes me feel a hopeful hopelessness especially with feelings of love. It often makes me remember my young teenage freedom & depression, or the way I felt watching someone I loved slowly waste away from heroin while I was high on other drugs. Or the way I felt when I FINALLY met my muse & main inspiration... my musical idol who I've had the BIGGEST crush on for 21 years since I was 13... who was by then unfortunately married and more famous than before, therefore unattainable... we met on a quiet, cool breezy night after his concert. He gave me a very long, genuine hug that felt so healing and I wanted to stay there and be held forever. I looked up and realized we were standing under a church with a soft warm white glowing cross on the steeple, the stars glowing behind it... and that feeling... THAT is shoegaze. ❤
Shoegaze and dream pop are the main genres that inspired me to start learning the guitar. I wanted to make music in the range of those genres, but since I only played keyboard I found it hard to get the guitar sounds I wanted. Now I just have to get good enough to make music with it.
I love how diverse Shoegaze is. Can range from heavy riffs like Shovel by Hum, or beautiful soundscapes like Starting Over by LSD and the Search for God. Or a flawless mix like Mayonaise by Smashing Pumpkins. That euphoric feeling and the fuzzy tones in this kind of music is just like no other. Scratches my brain perfectly. Quick recommendation: Pancake by Swirlies! Shoegaze af

I dig it. As an older gent, who was in my late teens and early 20's when the genres were new: I always thought the music press got it exactly backwards. The pop music that took texture and style from the Alternative, Indie "college rock" types of the mid to early 1980's should have been called "Grunge" while the bands who took moody introspection and self-effacing passive aggressive songwriting from those same bands should have been called "shoegaze". What I am saying is that a band like Swervedriver was taking texture and style choices from bands like Dinosaur, Sonic Youth, and JAMC, while a band like Alice in Chains was taking lyrical and structural choices from those same bands- so, since "grunge" is talking about texture, "shoegaze" connotes a withdrawn introversion- hence the switch. Great work, man. Dude, excellent content. I am a massive ride fan but never looked much further. Thank you so much. Edit: thanks for the pedal partners points, I needed em
I'm from Argentina and i indirectly discovered this genre by listening to one album made by a famous local band: "Dynamo" by Soda Stereo, relased in 1992. This is one of the most celebrated bands from here and they were pretty big in the 80's for its New Wave/Post Punk style that had super poppy hooks. However in the 90's, they completely shift the style with "Cancion Animal" in 1990 and after that was a pretty big hit, they shifted into a more Shogazy/Dreampop oriented album, since his leader and main songwritter, Gustavo Cerati, was a big fan of the genre back when it was flourishing. Keep in mind nobody here knew about Shoegaze, so he basiclly could sneak up a record with those influences under the Argentinian scene without anyone noticed, making it sound fresh and unique. I've always loved that record but never could figured why until i discover the bands you mention here, that we all know and love, circa 2018 or somewere at that time. I recomend to give that album a listen, specially if you're a Ride fan (Cerati was clearly a big one) also sheck some of the Soda Stereo Live performances from the era as well!
Because of this video, I discovered so many good bands (the others you mentioned besides MBV, Slowdive and Ride). They are absolutely amazing. THANK YOU!
The scratched yet upwards tones give off an interesting air of carelessness, and stylish age. Like a rusted car decorated with spray paint, and furbished with blankets and pillows.
What I love about many of these 'Beautiful Noise' bands is similar to what I love about Abstract Expressionism. There is a lyrical mystery and magic to both art forms due to the organic way they were created. Who knows what combination of ultramarine and cobalt blue de Kooning had on his brush and who knows what Kevin Shields tuned some of those strings to prior to bending them? (Sometimes he didn't know himself.) The reason Loveless took so long to create is also why de Kooning sometimes took years to complete a painting. As a result, no amount of artificial intelligence could replicate either art form.
thanks for the video, ive gotten super interested in the genre in the past couple of days after being exposed to some japanese shoegaze particularly Kinoko Teikoku's Eureka album
Swervedriver - Last train to satansville has an incredible use of a Jazzmaster's tremelo. It's more western sounding but Adam creates a really thick wall of sound towards the end, that represents a locomotive
Coaltar of the Deepers (Japan) actually got me into this type of music ("Fault" for example is a great song from them). I only discovered My Bloody Valentine after.
I don't really know if I should or not write what I'm about to write... Anyway, I write songs as "I Am Invisble". I released a full album called Saga, which I thought it was dream pop genre, or so. Then, a magazine reviewed it and they wrote that It was good, defining it as shoegaze. So I said to myself "well, I love My Bloody Valentine, and I am not even close to their monumental sound, my songs are way straightforward, so that's a huge compliment!". Then I realized that *nerd alert* I composed everything with my gtr, a looper connected with a minilogue and a DM, running a modded ehx BIG MUFF Pi and a eqd Cloven Hoof, two overdrives, two reverbs (Polara and Afterneath) and a Flashbackx4, layering riffs over riffs... so... that's ok... shoegaze fits well and I didn't even know that. If you want to, you will find links to I Am Invisible in Info! spotify apple bandcamp... Have a nice day everyone :-)
i always equated shoegaze with My bloody valentine kind of music and bands back in the day that would literally just stare at their shoes while playing live
Great documentary. Only recently did I realise that the songs I liked all these years had a genre. I didn't know these bands, but I heard this sound in bands like Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Blur, and to an extent in ambient black metal / doom.

Who deserves more subs? This guy right here
ah thank you dude :)
@@pedalpartners seriously though your production value does not reflect the amount of subs you have this is fantastic
Dude, excellent content. I am a massive ride fan but never looked much further. Thank you so much.
Edit: thanks for the pedal partners points, I needed em
hey! thanks so much for watching :) ride are from my hometown!
Thanks for your channel!
Exclusive material ❤️
thanks!
Because of this video, I discovered so many good bands (the others you mentioned besides MBV, Slowdive and Ride).
They are absolutely amazing.
THANK YOU!
that's awesome to hear, thanks for watching!
Absolutely beautiful once again. This is growing to be one of my favorite channels on the UA-cam.
thanks my dude i try ;)
The scratched yet upwards tones give off an interesting air of carelessness, and stylish age. Like a rusted car decorated with spray paint, and furbished with blankets and pillows.
I think only "refurbish" is in the dictionary, but I'll take "furbish" here. It fits
I've been really into the band Daughter, which I think their music is Indie and Shoegaze.
i need to check out more of their music, they seem good!
Great video, now I know more about this genre
This is great Luca! Your voice is very pleasant. Great video good sir.
thanks my dude appreciate it
this video it's self was an experience
thanks so much :)
Ride’s “Leave Them All Behind” is the Stairway To Heaven of shoegaze.
An amazing shoegaze band is 'Daughter'
my favourite album is 'Not To Disappear'
a truly magical experience, really recommend

Shoegaze for life
What I love about many of these 'Beautiful Noise' bands is similar to what I love about Abstract Expressionism.
The Catherine Wheel ~ Ferment is a great album.
thanks for the video, ive gotten super interested in the genre in the past couple of days after being exposed to some japanese shoegaze particularly Kinoko Teikoku's Eureka album
thanks for watching! have fun out there :)
amazing video production
thanks so much, definitely sub for more like this :)
Your voice is so relaxing too!
haha sweet
The guitars and the ambience thoughhhh :3
thank you :)))
This is an amazing video, thank you so much for the background and the knowledge!

thanks so much, means a lot. just checked out your channel {subbed}, some real nice sounds you're making with those tape loops!
great visuals, great genre, great video
thank you chief :)
i always equated shoegaze with My bloody valentine kind of music and bands back in the day that would literally just stare at their shoes while playing live
Great documentary. Only recently did I realise that the songs I liked all these years had a genre. I didn't know these bands, but I heard this sound in bands like Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, Blur, and to an extent in ambient black metal / doom.
thanks for watching, it's my goal to share the love of shoegaze!
Deftones
