Most of the cases I know of (mostly in the 30's and 40's but some today) are either orphans being married off at 15 or 16 to a guy who's 18-22 (which won't be as big a deal when they're 25 and 28) after the death of parents to keep them out of foster care, or girls who get pregnant (and when 13-year-olds are bragging about being knocked up...) and legally sharing their assets means that both parents can support the child they were clearly old enough to make. It protects the mom from being left holding the bag.
"legally sharing their assets means that both parents can support the child they were clearly old enough to make. It protects the mom from being left holding the bag." UHM i know you're probably not supporting child marriage at all, but if you think about what you just said, that's kind of fucked up. teenage pregnancy is an epidemic in the U.S, especially with so many states allowed to decide what to teach their students. some barely receive any information about safe sex, and end up with 3 kids by 18 even without their parents forcing them to. schools need to educate kids about how to NOT end up ruining an innocent child's life. bringing a child into the world you cant care for is extremely reckless. you can have a child as young as like, 10, 12 years old depending on the person. no, being old enough to make a child doesnt mean you're old enough to take care of one. that type of thinking is why kids like this get forced into shitty situations, because their parent's didnt know better because THEIR parents had them at 15 years old with no education, passing on decades of misinformation and biased opinions. i hate seeing things like this happen. Some people get angry and offended that teens have sex and end up pregnant, i get offended when they think they're capable enough to raise a child, when they aren't even capable enough to use a condom, birth control pill, iud, the shot, female condom, fucken pulling out, plan B...there are so many options.
Lizzy Ruiz Wood I think you missed the point of my comment I was saying that drugs and married are two different things something more accurate would be maybe house ownership maybe idk point is drugs and getting married at a young age are different things
Minnesotan Gaming in my opinion you are free to consume tobacco if it's your will but the girls are not free to refuse the wedding and moreover they are too young to understand the consequences (if they want to marry). So for me allowing girls to marry with no limit of age is a worst thing than allowing teens to buy tobacco. (And tobaco is quite expensive so it's harder to be addicted when you start)
TheMusicalKnokcers tobacco is easy to get ahold of for kids because of friends that may have people in their family that use it and then they could convince their friends to do it aswell and also I don’t see what’s so hard to understand about my comment all I was saying is tobacco and getting married at a young age aren’t really the same thing
I would rather die of lung cancer at 50 having smoked from when I was a teenager that live my life married to a pedophile, permanently in poverty, with kids I can't look after and no prospects for the future.
Almost as soon as I turned 13, my mom told me to drop out of school and get married. My mom never made it past elementary school and got married as a young teen. But even after being in one dysfunctional/abusive marriage after another, it was like she wanted me to follow in her footsteps. I was being raped already by my own dad. I eventually ran away from home, I graduated high school and became the first person in my family to get a college degree. When I finally married I was 30 and married the man I fell in love with. We've been together 15 years now. To this day I am considered an embarrassment in my family and am not welcomed to family gatherings. I was even left out by my family at funerals. This is the part of America people don't know about.
I don't get invited to funerals because I married outside my race. My maiden name is Johnson, if that doesn't tell you how white I am then I don't know what will. I was ostracized as soon as I introduced him to the family. My family is as backwards as yours though, so it is what it is.
Ashley Hernandez My daughter is a mixed race, and we've been approached by strangers who tell us how beautiful she is. One lady told me she has features most women would kill for. And it's because she's a mixed race, no other way anyone can have all those features at the same time. Irish\Scotish\Korean
I'm so sorry for what you had to go through and I'm glad you're in a better seeming place now, and honestly, it's quite good, in my opinion that you didn't go to any family events, especially considering the heineous acts that had happened. I just hope that rape, paedophilia, child/forced marriages stop happening and that that a happy ending finally happens.
@Karen Price marriage of a child is just another name for legal rape. Since underage girls are not capable of consent like an adult. Grow up Karen and put that blindfold off of your eyes.
Ivy Ruonakoski that is an argument for the courts to decide. Depending on the state the marriage of the minor may be fully legal. Even if the marriage is legal, a husband can be legally punished for raping his wife if the sex was nonconsensual. Sadly, many of these girls are young and do not know their rights nor what is really going on. Their parents "marry" them off without any care for their well-being. These girls are scared and dependent on whoever takes care of them. Remeber when you were 13-16? Even though you thought you were mature, you were still dependent on your parents to take care of food, housing, clothes, etc... that dependency is transferred to the husband. So out of fear, dependency, confusion or whatever, these girls are unsure of how to react to save themselves. Hence why their parents and husbands can take advantage of that and force them to do things that they may not want to do.
+The Kommandant PLEASE TELL ME YOU ARE A TROLL right? Every children need to live as children. Getting married can wait when both are adults. Women aren't baby machine. Women deserve a future, choice, living their life fully....And boys as well deserve to live their life well.
+The Kommandant LOOL, she was FORCED, it wasn't her choice. There is a reason why children under 18 are protected by the laws when it comes to responsability. Children are children. Being a PARENT NEED WISDOM, RESPONSABILITY and INTELECTUAL MATURITY. We aren't ANIMALS raising ANIMALS. We are HUMANs and need to be able to provide a better future for our children.
+The Kommandant THERE IS NO HAPPINESS in getting married at a young age. Even ADULT SEE MARRIAGE AS AN HARD DUTY and a BURDEN. It's the reason why so many people divorce. It's because there is SO MANY MISTAKES. And unless you are smart enough to handle things properly MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SUFFER for many mistakes. Let children BE children. At 20 they have their whole life to have babies and will be able to provide a better future for them
The Kommandant Excuse me, “doting husband”? He was raped her! Did you pay attention to the video at all?! He should be convicted and be in jail right now. Or get maul by a tiger. Also she didn’t get the choice to choose about this, she was forced to. You can’t compare about destroying that poor woman’s future with learning how to swim. Yes, I agree she was a hero, but the bottom line is, she shouldn’t have been marry at that age, and to her rapist as well. That’s just wrong, and I even think her mother have some problems and need to go and see a doctor.
@@QuantumKitty There is a difference between homeless population and poverty. The US has way more people living on the streets than most poor countries. Why? Simple, most poor countries have strong extended families and they look after one another.
The worse part is that these child bride are not co consider adults, their husband is now their legal guardian. So, let’s say an 11 year old girl is raped by a 20 yr old man and she is pregnant. He marries her and is not have the legal right to make all of her medical decisions, education decisions, ect. So, this 11 yr old can have a baby and be married, but can’t make choices about her own education, about getting birth control, or medication, ect. The rapist makes all of her choices, legally. Let that sink in. The rapist now has all of the power over her and the child and people justify it by saying, “oh, it is what is in the best interest of the baby.” Not the 11 year old, the baby, cause the baby is more important than an 11 year old being raped over and over again by her rapist.
@@debbienpeters this happened to my sister... my parents allowed her to get married last year at the age of 16... when we tried to call the cops to bring her home (her husband was abusing her) he said "Yall signed your rights away to him. You cant force her to be home anymore". Now she is pregnant but back with us. This all could have been avoided if my parents didnt let her go.
@@debbienpeters in Poland marriage is legal when you're 18 but there is an exception where the jury can allow a girl who is at least 16 (but not 18 yet) in certain circumstances; it is not used often though but there are some cases; the difference between the US is that the moment she gets married, she is legally treated like an adult and can decide about herself (and a baby if there's one) in most legal situations, unless the legal age is literally stated as 18 (Poland is using a civil law, ius civile, where there are statutes and legislation regarding to nearly every situation, judges have to use and obey that law, they can't create a law and precedences themselves; precedences are only sometimes considered in future judgement as an example)
The parent can consent. However living in Texas I never knew this was a thing. I never met anyone like this that was from here. I had a friend from Mexico that was married at 15. Like to see this is shocking bc I thought this only happened over seas
Hollywood, CNN, the music industry, they all do this shit. As i have stated many times to countless of other people, the West, sadly, have a hidden paedophile culture that we need to destroy. After that, Western culture will be perfect.
Actually the widespread " mother's boyfriend sex-abuse of her kids", and the "perverted uncle"'s sexual abuse along with the Church Priests' child abuse is what Hollywood and Americans don't want the rest of the World to know about
sunheart123 , it could be a US thing: balme the victim, not the abuser... or it could be a global issue in patriarchal societies... you know, where men are those who make the rules...
Schlomo Shekelstien, ... right... like it's not done in the US and other western countries.. give me a break! Why do you think victims are speaking about it long after the deed? Why do you think rapists are at large? I'll give you my theory: in every society where men's opinion counts more than those of women( the whole world, with SOME isolated matriarchal villages) there's no interest in punishing ( for real ) a crime that most in the ruling class ( a.k.a. men ) feel entitled to perpetrate. They also made the fun " lock and key " analogy - do you know it? I bet you do. ( I have a fun one too: " engine and piston " ( it's more complex, and men may not be able/willing to understand it ) which I doubt will ever be accepted...
I'm not denying the fact that rape goes on in the us and western countries, but tell me when was the last time in the us or Western countries rape accusations went uninvestigated or unpunished? As far as I know in the us at least, a woman can even falsely accuse someone of rape, and even if they are exonerated in a court of law, their social status and reputation is completely f#cked because of said accusation
Schlomo Shekelstien ther were a couple of cases where I live, in Italy: girls that were gang-raped and they actually got to see them walk freely... and be mocked by at least one, If I remember well... As for the US...it's half a continent, for crying out loud!... you come to tell me there aren't many rapes? Sadly, that's very unlikely...under-reported? ...well, considering most aren't likely to get justice, they might prefer to suffer in silence than to be humiliated even further...
I knew girls at 17 with 4 children, and not being married didn't stop them. Sometimes marrying the guy after the first is the only way to keep him from skipping town and leaving her with a baby and no way to care for it.
SmartestDumbyYouWillEverMeet America needs to first solve its own problems before doing anything else. For instance, why is America donating so much money overseas when poverty is still not resolved in America?
Laughable? This in America is disgusting. Do you know what else is disgusting? The fact that for 40 years children across our country, the UK, have been raped, abused, abducted and in some cases murdered, and no one sounded the alarm. Also, Somali child marriage has risen by 100%, Somali men fly from the UK to Somalia with a Girl, to get married. Yeah, we're not in a position to laugh at America, when we are just as bad, if not worse.
@@mrbogdanoff9233 That's actually incorrect. EVERY state minimum without parental consent is 18. Many states however will allow as young as 16 WITH consent (and most of those require a maximum age gap of no more than 4 yrs).
It's simply more common. And the expectations for men and women are different. A lot of these underage girls are married off early to be housewives completely dependent on their husbands. Males are expected to take of their wives and a be provider. Most minor males can't do that. And most parents don't want their sons marrying much older women for various reasons.
@@TheRazorTongue And that is very sexist. They won't let their sons get abused or drop out of high school to get married, but they would do that to their daughters. This is proof that females in the US are still oppressed and don't have the same rights as males.
That was in the 50's. Back then single moms were treated VERY badly. Women paired up, or hid their pregnancies and gave up their babies, or faked being married just to avoid the stigma.
is a cultural thing. Basically, is this idea that a non-virgin would not be as desirable to a potential husband, because a "woman" who has "had a man" outside marriage is a slut, a temptress, evil, easy... . Therefore she would be condemned to public shame and of course blamed for being attacked in the first place ("you provoke him"," the way you talk", "you should have known better," blah blah blah). Additionally, given the year, in general a woman had less option in terms of work and education to support herself, therefore getting a husband became the crucial option to supposedly avoid hardship and ostracism.
Maybe she was religious. In the Bible the 'punishment' for rapists is a fine paid to the father and marrying your victim. Her mother was probably an extremist who thought it would be 'sinful' to let her daughter lose her virginity as an unmarried person. It's disgusting tbh
Getting married isn't really necessary for the situation. If the biological father wants to help in-person, there are ways of arranging it without legally tying the two people to each other. Let them cohabitate until they are 18, and then decide to get married. We already have laws that hold the biological father financially responsible, even if he doesn't want to remain in the company of the mother and child.
Ciara.Chaya with 13 years old , you should be with your parents . The dad , or his family if he ia also minor , can help , but she will be way better with her parents than married
so they always bark about asian countries but rarely talk about west . this not just an issue of asian countries , i think happening almost everywhere .
Jaspreet, as a native Briton. I agree. Behind the lands of milk and honey in the West, there's a hidden culture amongst the elite. This is a paedophile culture, Hollywood and the music industry specifically are big into it. Watch these videos on youtube - Sun Sea and Satan by Pie n Mash and also Jimmy Saville and the 9th circle by Redpill Phil. This goes on, because the populations of the West are so conditioned, we only listen and see what we like to listen and see. And when we see something paedophilic in 3rd world countries, we always have a "it would never happen to us" attitude. Because as nations, we've become oblivious to anything and everything that we don't want to hear, which is why there are hate speech laws in Europe. They're slowly making it all normal to society.
It isn't ok to be pregnant at 15 or 18, let alone be married at thirteen. We give more attention to 16 year old pregnancies because they occur more commonly. What's your point?
I think her point is "just because" a person is married, Americans silence their judgement about teen pregnancies. If a 15 and 17 year-old got married and had a kid, although it is wrong, most Americans would say "at least they are married." The societal conditioning that marriage and kids go together regardless of age could be why so many child marriages happen. If a 15 year old says she is married, many don't ask the age of the husband. We likely assume he's just as young as her... not that he could be 30!
I was 20 scared to tell my parents I was dating a 30 year old, I just can't imagine how as a parent this is okay to you, I'm just disgusted. At the hands of the people who are supposed to protect you is another kind of hurt
meg thor I mean I’m not gonna say we don’t have some things about us which suck, but a lot of the people I’ve seen bash on the US just seem really self superior, every country will have problems, especially with a population as large and relatively diverse as that of America, but I’m with you that we shouldn’t just blindly yell Merica and act like it’s all great.
Jane Doh Thank our orange president for doing practically nothing to help us. What could we do, all democracy does is let us vote. Also blame every reporter out there, doing their jobs as shitty as they ever could!
@@moki9079 i agree with you to some extent. But the people have more power than they believe and are equally responsible. We cant blame problems that exited prior to his presidency on him. Its the peoples fault. We chose to fall for their bullshit everyday. Its a personal choice how we spend our lives.. one can chose to be part of the problem or part of the solution. And right now most US citizens are choosing to be part of the problem.
I used to live in mid east and in a muslim country and tell you what actually girls had to grant the marriage otherwise marriage wouldn't happen though there were some marriages practised without the self consent of female spouse it was considered by some religious people as something bad
My home country Germany changed the law in 2017. People can only get married if they are 18 years or older, no exceptions. Before it was possible to marry with 16 under certain circumstances. I firmly believe that setting the age of marriage so that only legal adults can marry is the only right choice. All other options open the door to possible abuse of minors.
In China the age limit is 20 for women and 22 for men. This is why even many girls from the most impoverished areas are strongly encouraged to go to college first, then marry.
@@miarabea401 A cultural thing I guess. There's been a 2-year age gap since the Imperial dynasties (men 15, women 13). Even in regions like Hong Kong and Taiwan, it's 18 for men and 16 for women. The Chinese tend to prefer older husbands who are deemed more mature and able to financially support the wife. My parents are 8 years apart, my maternal grandparents 7 years.
If you aren’t old enough to be trusted to sign your own permission slips, you aren’t old enough to make the decision to get married. If people were allowing emancipated minors to get married, that would be one thing, but putting them in the most adult situation with the most adult responsibilities in life without giving them the legal rights of an adult is insane. It defies all logic.
Stephanie Casper And this is part of the problem, cause when that 11 year old was. Arrived to her rapist, he became her legal guardian. He decided her medical and educational choices. The irony is that these girls are married off at a young age, but can’t even file for divorce because they are not of majority age. I don’t think a lot of people realize this.
Welcome to America! Is this your first visit to the good ole US of A? Wha? You say that your an American? That's interesting. So why have you and the hundreds of millions of other Americans allowed child marriage to continue? Each and everyday you and everyone else has the opportunity to help put an end to it all. Or does it feel better sitting on ass playing the "blame/complain/shame game instead?" Either way, we're all responsible because as human beings we all represent humanity.
In america kids are apparently old enough to decide if they're a boy or girl as well and encourage by their parents to deforme their bodies.. 😕 We should be speaking up about all this..
@kimmie6209 how did you come to the conclusion that the USA, which by first world country standard has a ridiculously high crime rate, is the most civilized country in the world ?
noopur saxena still very much human. It's a trait: diversity. Some are so old-schooled that having grandchildren and grand-grandchildren and even more is bliss and honor
You belong to a backward society, in truth girls should get married as soon as they have their first period and be pregnant before their second period. Just joking.
It usually is a teen asking. The vast majority of teen marriages are teen to teen. Don't trust media when they will happily twist the truth to create a frenzy.
wolfcat87 Laws are not there to prevent the 99 times something doesn't go wrong, they are there to prevent the one time it does. The concept of underaged marriage is widely used by teens who want to get married, but it also provides a legal framework for parents to pressure their children into marriages that they shouldn't be in. This is a descision that will impact the rest of your life farther than any other descision. And thus it has to be legally impossible for anyone to make this choice for you. Not even your parents.
It doesn't matter. It shouldn't be legal in the first place, whether permission is granted or not. A person can't legally drink until they are 21 but they can marry and get married even before they've had their first period? C'mon America. You can do better.
What is wrong with you? Are you being sarcastic? You can not be seriously thinking it is a good idea to let an 11-year-old child marry her rapist. This is nuts. @Damian Furrer
We do have the law, at least. But millions of girls in rural areas are forced to marry as soon as they hit puberty. Laws alone don't help. But the government does have a child helpline on which everyday children or others call to report impending marriages, and officials are able to stop some. But parents and society are devious and they get the children married at night. And once married, the union is held legal despite the legal age for marriage being 18 for women and 21 for men.
My great grandmother got married at 17 and lived for 93 years before leaving this mortal coil 7 years ago. Even still, India at least is better at recognizing that child marriage is not okay and America is like, "If it's the law, it's the law."
@@spartangoku7610 So child marriage in India is illegal... The age was pushed around 10 years back to 21 years for both men and women. It also became legally harder and more enforced to have child marriages. This lead to a drop from 46% back in 2005 to now less than 3% in 2015-16 and that has fallen even more. However the number of people getting married between the ages of 18 to 21 is still at around 26% as of 2015-16. Also, what the last person said about the police being corrupt and letting it happen, may have been true in the early 2000s. Now not so much. The law is enforced and enforced strictly. And it has to be, because there are non governmental organizations that work in cohesion with the government to ensure rules are being followed and stuff like this doesnt happen. The beauty of living in a democracy is, press freedom and when stuff like this comes out into the open, heads roll. I would like to point out, that it also has alot to do with religion. Child marriages which were once the norm amongst Hindus back in early 20th century and even later, are now looked upon as a social taboo. Women are far more empowered in the Hindu community and even more so in the Sikh, Buddhist and Christian community. The Muslim community though, is a different beast all together. Child marriages are still prevalent amongst Muslims (not all, but a few), they are harder to detect and if prosecuted by the law, they'll complain of minority segregation and selective targeting of Muslims, which will ironically draw condemnation by Human rights groups and Amnesty International. And well, ever since Muslim migration to Europe increased, child marriages have now become the norm in places like the UK and most of Western Europe.

I’m going to start lobbying to ban all marriages under 18 in the state I live in. This is unacceptable. I don’t care if someone’s pregnant or what, nobody under the age of 18 should be allowed to marry or be married off by parents with terrible judgement.
Alex Larson Idk know about all, I think that the key here is forced. I think too that anyone who is getting married earlier than 18 voluntarily and under no pressure should really consider what they are doing but I don’t know that they should necessarily be stopped. Especially with pregnancy in the mix I think if you are going to raise a child then you should probably be able to make such decisions for yourself (although at that point I think they legally are considered emancipated minors so there might be some legal distinctions there anyway)
its not gonna work dear, US officials don’t attack on the subject because of what they so called religious rights, but in reality it’s more like a privileged for pedophile rich people, government will not change this stupid policy even when they are almost going to be the only nation left doing it, cuz even more and more countries is banning this the states willing to turn a blind eye
@Kleo wrong you are god permitted sex before 18 for women bcz they are developing their organs but due to their body not fully developed i and science will call it weak for reproduction prior 18 can lead death under medical lanquage and nature or medical science bieng creatad by god
It has NEVER been illegal in the U.S., and politicians are resistant to outlawing the practice. Since most of these marriages involve pregnancy, politicians believe these shotgun marriages, as they were once called, were much better than the girl not marrying the father. Never mind that the vast majority of these marriages end in divorce.
Most states require that both members be 18 or older in order to get married with their own agency. Under 18, and a parent's consent or judge can allow it in spite of the people in the couple not being legally old enough to decide for themselves. Often times, not only is the parent consenting to the marriage, but the parent is the one demanding that the teen be married, even against the teen's own wishes, due to a teenage pregnancy and antiquated ideas of what the "right thing to do" is.
The BBC just likes to make America look bad so they can feel better about the EU. The stagnating economy and the disaster of the EURO and the FACT that America has much higher GDP/capita than any country in the EU. Its Mormons, they marry young. They still practice polygamy in secret. What do you want us to do? Kill them all?
The Mormon church's official policy is actually against polygamy, and has been since 1890. But indeed there are people who practice polygamy in secret, both Mormon and other religions.
+carultch - Yes, its their official policy. It was changed because of pressure from the United States government and many ignored it and some continue to do so to this day.
They don't obey the laws and still have rates of over 50%, and we rarely use this helpful legal loophole. The loophole is to allow teens to marry each other if one becomes pregnant and they do not want to be single parents. It's so rarely done, and it's even more rarely abused. Most Americans do not even know it is possible. Have you seen statistics for single mothers and how they and their children suffer for life? It's not religion at all in this case.
From all the listed countries that don't allow child marriage, ironically are the countries with the biggest child marriage rates in the world. Politics and laws does not equate reality.
A country is as good as you are prepared to put into it or to put up with it. Too much unrestrained power in the hands of a select few with very personal interests corrupts society. If you do not like it educate yourself and agitate for reform, but not be throwing Molotov cocktails.
People saying that they were unaware of this problem. I don't know what bubbles you're living in, but here in Kentucky this is a relatively common practice. Many pregnant girls end up married here before the age of 18 as a way to preserve the family unit, values and reputation. My great grandmother was 14, my grandmother 17, my mother 19, my best friend's mother 15 or 16. Granted we were one of the dark red states on that map, but it is a prevalent problem and one more common in religious and conservative communities.
There weren't any girls getting married when they got pregnant around me growing up, but there was a horrifying number of girls (13+) getting pregnant by older men (20+) and nothing being done about it because the girls claimed love. A close friend of mine had her first child at 14 by a 23 year old. Her mother just went with it and was pissed off when he skipped out on my friend once he found out she was pregnant. Her entire family was a long list of babies having babies. Her grandmother was only 2 years older than my mother and my friend wasn't even the oldest kid in her family. She signed my year book that year with "I'm so glad you know better".
Conservative Republican Christians pushing babies to have babies. Then pushing them on welfare to help raise all those kids when the guys leave them to go get some younger stuff. That's family values alright!
Sherry Evenhuis why is this even happening so much? Ain't parents supposed to watch after their kids and not leave them alone, espessially with any adult dudes around?? Why the hell they don't use condoms?
Jordan Napier:::; Kentucky in some places is still in the back woods, Look back way back it was necessary. Your life expectancy was at the least 45 years old and you had to sustain yourself and your family on the farm. Getting married at 10 or 12 wasn't uncommon back then. Sort of continues with the notion one needs a large family to survive. Look at Catholic families especially with Hispanics. Live long and prosper i guess? It's not a necessity anymore but it continues.
I know two girls in high school that are getting forced to marry, it’s very sad, they have talked to our schools counselor for help, and she said that she would try and help with the problem. If they get forced to marry, they have to go to their home countries and marry whoever.
Tamika Jones I’m just stating I have two girls in my school that have to get married, and yes they are American, they are legal. I only know one of the girls is legal, I’m not so sure about the other one. If shit like that didn’t happen, why would they make a documentary?

I'm shocked! I had no idea this could happen in a civilized western country. The law needs to change to protect children. No child can be expected to make a life decision like marriage. It takes maturity and experience to know who you want to place the rest of your life in the hands of.

Velma Velvet seeing as how you make major life choices in your teens, and being stripped of them has damaged her growing up as a normal child. Being 26 is not the same as going back to being 14 or 15 and I know that because I'm 17 and I could not act like I did at 14 and reshape my life by making those choices again at 17 because making them as a 14 year old is what shaped me. You can't rewind time. She was forced to have sex at an age where teens only begin to understand sex and their body. They were robbed of so much and it makes me sick.
Please. Its not that big of a deal. Its a few religious weirdos in the middle of nowhere in a HUGE country. What do you want us to do? Kill them? Put them in prison? Laws are not going to stop them. Its a deeply held religious belief. What would you say if we did send out the military to round them all up? I highly doubt it would be 'Hooray for America'.
The Sorrentos Moon Most of these family members of Child brides are religious nut wings in cults. The US needs to stop protecting religion at the expense of individuals' physical and mental well being.
@bhk110: The only way the US Government will be able to do anything is when your Political System separates Religion from State, and l don't think that is going to happen anytime soon. The US Constitution and the Bill of Rights actually put a full stop at the end, which gives even further protection. In Australia, trust me if this was happening, it would be found out and every adult would be arrested who is involved in it and jailed. The children would be taken from them, also any other children they have, and they would Not be seeing those children again. When the children become of age, if they wish to visit their parents, they would be adults, but, at least they would have been de-briefed out of that mentality. They would have lived normal lives, and if they did want to see their parents? They may be talking to them on a phone with glass in between while they are still rotting in jail.
What? Because they're marrying young? That is insane. Who is going to take care of those kids? Nobody in their right mind wants to take care of other people's children. They'd be better off marrying young than be taken care of by the government. People have married young for thousands of years.
@BloodRider 14 Unlike Zimbabwe I haven't heard any cases where the government has stepped in and confiscated farms from whites and handing them over to blacks who don't know anything about agriculture. That is here in the U.S. The regime of president Mugabe is a dictatorship and racist towards whites. They created their own economic hardship by stealing farms from thier rightful owners and handing them over to people who don't even know how to run them. Zimbabwe may or may not have underage marriages but I seriously doubt that this country is any example of real development. If so why is it such a pisspoor 3rd world nation? From I have read this country was actually better economically and politically when it was run by the white regime of Ian Smith. Then it was known as Rhodesia. This country has declined in quality after Mugabe took over. So it's a damn poor example of development. More a real case of degeneration.

In India, it's a shameful for a family to get their kids married before the legal age. Normally people are married here at 24 years of age. A few get married before legal age , but we consider it shameful act and crime.

@@saloni379 It depends on where you live in India, your social class, and all that. If you are a middle class urban dweller, marriage before 25 (and preferably a post graduate degree) is almost unimaginable. If you're an illiterate rural day laborer, marriage after 15 is equally unimaginable. There are many subsections of Indian society where teen marriage is normal and staying unmarried in your twenties is what would be considered shameful. India is a very diverse society.
How sick it makes me to hear that.😡 An eleven year old kid with a 20 year old man? The USA are the least developed country in the world it seems. I hope he got his punishment.
Petr is misinformed. That age difference is not allowed to marry in most states unless the female is already pregnant. The loophole is to allow teens to marry each other if one becomes pregnant and they do not want to be single parents. It's so rarely done, and it's even more rarely abused. Most Americans do not even know it is possible. Have you seen statistics for single mothers and how they and their children suffer for life?
The law for sex is >18 (16 at the lowest), or no more than 4 years age difference. Even then I'm pretty sure that's just to protect kids who started dating as teens, so that it doesn't become a felony when one turns 18 and the other is still 17
What is the point in this?! It ruins your child childhood! If my parents tried to make me do that I would straight up run away. And why is this legal?! I swear this makes “mother knows best!” Look like bullshi*!
Pink Diamond often I have heard that in the issue of the 11 yr old being raped and them married to her rapist is because it is in the best interest of the baby to have two parents. Seriously, put the kid up for adoption, abuse an 11 yr old mother and a predator rapist father really can’t be a good home environment for any baby.
All of these stories are sad, but especially the one where she got married at 11 and had 6 kids by the time she was 16. Back when I was 11, I was playing with beanie babies.
This is heartbreaking, but I want Anglet to know that in relation to what you can do with your life with jobs, age is just a number. An achievement at age 18 is the exact same as one at age 28. When you're old and grey no one will care what age you graduated uni or became a doctor or whatever. You still have time to do all those things girl.
This is so sad. I'm 16 and I can't even begin to imagine having five children at this age :( I'm so sorry that so many girls and women in the US and all over the world have to live like this.
Uhhh, no one in the U.S. has to live like this. The lady at the end was an exception due to the time period she was in. These days you have to consent every day to staying there for this to happen. lol
I never realized how much of a problem child marriage was in this country. My mother was married to an older man when she was 16. My grandmother didn't force her but she was highly pressured to marry him. I thought this was a rare case, and I'm shocked to see it's still happening in the US today.
Im American and had NO idea this happened in the U.S. outside of Mormons doing this shit, which everyone is against outside of their hermit world, so please don't make it seem like we accept this and are okay with this.
Actually, mainstream Mormons don't even do this. The FLDS, a broken off branch of the mainstream Mormon church, does still practice this. In fact, the average age of a member of the FLDS is 19, and most girls get married at 12. Though, there's only around seven thousand of them and they isolate themselves.
Wow I’m stunned. As an American I never even knew this was such a problem. To think in this day and age, and in a first world country at that, this is still a thing disgusts me😢

Never marry any girl to someone until she wants because one day, she will find someone who will be a good husband to her. Girls and women should always get respect as every religion says that whenever a girl is born in a family she is a blessing given by God to the whole family. Don't ever consider her a burden as she might become better than a son one day.
Funnily enough most people who win the Victoria Cross all usually took care of their parents, family, or siblings from a very young age, so it's clearly more than possible that it happens. That is all.
Arranged marriages, closed community's, young people forced into a religious lifestyle with no chance to get out Yes that's all in the US just one example is the Hassidic Jews in Brooklyn, but there is many more society's that take away human rights from their youths and the government is well aware of their existence, sometimes even protects them
having 6 KIDS within a 5 year period is a lot for any woman, but for a girl to have 6 kids from the time she's 11 to 16??? it shouldn't be allowed, i feel a deep sorrow for her and i'm glad she's making an effort to change what she went through.
Yet some people say that this only happens in South Asian and Middle Eastern communities, while there are a few countries in either of these regions that even banned it.
To all those defending this by saying "Oh but this doesn't happen everyday. Its worse in the middle east (or any other country for that matter)." Its not about how prevalaint child marriages are over there. Its about how America still doesnt have a set minimum age for marriage (something even 3rd world countries have). This just goes to show the arrogance and hypocrissy of the Americans. Americans need to learn to practice what they preach. Cuz boy how they LOVE to preach!
Have you done research? America does in fact have set minimum ages for marriage. In order for you to be married without parents permission, you MUST be at least 18. I've heard of some states having it 21, but point stands is you're a legal adult. Then if you want younger, the most states (only state that doesn't is I believe California) have 16/17 as their minimum with parental permission. Then California is a mess on that, but I believe you have to go through a judge. So for most states, under sixteen you must either find a loophole or convince the judge. "Americans need to learn to practice what they preach. Cuz boy how they LOVE to preach!" You also seem to love to preach your opinion. Next time I recommend doing some research before spewing out nonsense.
PB Peaches "Unlike most Western countries, half of the US states do not have a legal minimum age of marriage." A simple wikipedia search will let you know this. I think what you're taking about is the Age of Consent. But there is no set age of marriage..and parental consent or judicial approval or any other legal loopholes doesn't undo the fact that its still child marriage. Isn't it what the vidwo is about? Exploitations of such loopholes.
Paula: I think you have it backward. I think that in California it is 16 with parental consent. In many states, it is younger. Kentucky is known for letting girls and occasionally boys get married very young, for example.

I’m gen z so I’ve only experienced America from the 2000’s to now, if this child bride shit was tried today, the media would have definitely caught on and the perpetrator would be cancelled in a heartbeat and posted on social media. My parents and people of my age would never let this slide, my mom even forbid me from being with a guy 3 years older than me. Moral of the story: times are a-changing, boomers. I don’t think there’s no hiding or scheming or secretive or selective cognitive going on, it’s just the fact that the topic is from back then and the victims aren’t coming out until now.
Bunny I’ve actually seen documentaries on it like bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan and I was talking about how I’ve been born and raised in the US meaning I have never heard of this happening recently IN THE US. but that doesn’t mean that I don’t know about this happening in OTHER countries, because I do. But it’s been outlawed here for decades, which is why I haven’t heard of it IN THE US. but again I’m not saying this is a topic I am completely unfamiliar to, because I’m not.
As a person from an upper middle class Indian family, I can say that we're far more sophisticated. Even though child marriage still prevails in some rural areas, it's on a decline.
Devastating! I don't understand how anyone, especially a mother, could force this on a child.

LaReyna DeBachata dumb moms and insane moms would do it
It's the old crappy way for thinking. "My mother did it to me, it didn't do me any harm"...
WTF, so you can't buy tobacco, BUT you can get married?
Tbh tobacco is a drug and it can kill you married and drugs are kinda ya know different

The important statement is she was FORCED into it.
if they has an age restriction in that state she wouldnt be forced into it
Indeed. Now, tell me again how this is different than sexual abuse of a minor?
It's not.
Trouble is in the communities these atrocities happen there's no one to turn to for help.
They have a whole beauty show for toddlers, and your surprised about child brides

Schlomo Shekelstien ther were a couple of cases where I live, in Italy: girls that were gang-raped and they actually got to see them walk freely... and be mocked by at least one, If I remember well...

The fact that for 40 years children across our country, the UK, have been raped, abused, abducted and in some cases murdered, and no one sounded the alarm. It's simply more common. And the expectations for men and women are different. A lot of these underage girls are married off early to be housewives completely dependent on their husbands.

That was in the 50's. Back then single moms were treated VERY badly. Women paired up, or hid their pregnancies and gave up their babies, or faked being married just to avoid the stigma.
wolfcat87 Actually, I saw her date of birth, she’s my age. Her mother forced her into marriage at age 11 in 1970, not the 1950s. (Just saying.)
is a cultural thing.
You should be at least 18 to get married. Enough said.
No, there are many instances of teen pregnancies where forcing a mom to be a single mom is far more barbaric for herself and her child.
What if you're under 18 and pregnant? I knew a 13-year-old who straight-up bragged about getting knocked up
Getting married isn't really necessary for the situation. If the biological father wants to help in-person, there are ways of arranging it without legally tying the two people to each other. Let them cohabitate until they are 18, and then decide to get married. We already have laws that hold the biological father financially responsible, even if he doesn't want to remain in the company of the mother and child.
+Rickrollingman But most teens don't want to go through the trauma. Also, it is pretty expensive to have an abortion.

This goes on, because the populations of the West are so conditioned, we only listen and see what we like to listen and see. no...how does this video say that it’s ok?
I think her point is "just because" a person is married, Americans silence their judgement about teen pregnancies. If a 15 and 17 year-old got married and had a kid, although it is wrong, most Americans would say "at least they are married." The societal conditioning that marriage and kids go together regardless of age could be why so many child marriages happen. If a 15 year old says she is married, many don't ask the age of the husband. We likely assume he's just as young as her... not that he could be 30!

@@zhuangjoy2645 interesting! Why is it different for men and women?
@@miarabea401 A cultural thing I guess. There's been a 2-year age gap since the Imperial dynasties (men 15, women 13). Even in regions like Hong Kong and Taiwan, it's 18 for men and 16 for women. Laws are not there to prevent the 99 times something doesn't go wrong, they are there to prevent the one time it does.
The concept of underaged marriage is widely used by teens who want to get married, but it also provides a legal framework for parents to pressure their children into marriages that they shouldn't be in.

I come from India which is a less developed country than America and even we hv a minimum age for marriage for women ie eighteen yrs .
Thank you for telling us this about India!
My opinion of India is now positive.
It was neutral before.
Julia A ok, back to neutral.

I thought it was illegal in the us?

Hypocrisy is the word you'e looking for. USA, as known for a long time, are experts in this area. They KNOW this is wrong, no need to question that when they will go the extra mile to point out relativaly mild flaws in the laws of other countries, but they're to stubborn to change themselves, the world has to follow them and not the other way around. @wildturkey3776 and @Emily Bandicoot Real feminism is supposed to focus on important issues like this, and its sad that some ppl take the word feminism and contort it to fit their ideals, giving feminism a bad name. Real feminism should, and does focus on stuff like this. There are many things wrong with society, and I think we should focus on the more pressing matters concerning sexism, and gender roles/discrimination both inside and outside of America. Now, culturally and morally many people don't support child marriage, but some uneducated (or illiterate) morons support child marriages.
Soon, with the growth of literacy (education standards), India will be free from these evil issues.
By the way: Parents, aren't you supposed to protect your children?
waaait so is it actually legal for them to have sex at lets say 13 and 20 years out but outside of marriage that's child abuse?!
Yep, even 15 years old brides - 30,31,43 years old groom seen in statistic of just 1 state (many states don't keep statistics on groom/bride age.)
Even then I'm pretty sure that's just to protect kids who started dating as teens, so that it doesn't become a felony when one turns 18 and the other is still 17
Lainlein Wait what, from where did you get it is legal for 13 and 20 to have sex? Where did it say that?
My husband was 25 and I was 17. I got pregnant at 17, married at 18. He is abusive now, but wasnt for the first three years.
Oh and many times judges will sign off on the marriage, like, oh he raped you, well okay her is your marriage certificate.
"Mother knows best!" is bullshi*, unfortunately. Sharing a sex doesn't automatically create empathy between people.
Kill the rapist.
These days you have to consent every day to staying there for this to happen. lol
Less than 14% of people who marry before 18 finish high school and of those only 4% finish college.

Watching this as an American is apalling. This is never discussed, I didn't even know this was still legal. I'm horrified.
I never realized how much of a problem child marriage was in this country. My mother was married to an older man when she was 16. My grandmother didn't force her but she was highly pressured to marry him. I thought this was a rare case, and I'm shocked to see it's still happening in the US today.
Indian's watching this: Let's pretend that doesn't happen here -_-
Im American and had NO idea this happened in the U.S. outside of Mormons doing this shit, which everyone is against outside of their hermit world, so please don't make it seem like we accept this and are okay with this.

Never marry any girl to someone until she wants because one day, she will find someone who will be a good husband to her. Girls and women should always get respect as every religion says that whenever a girl is born in a family she is a blessing given by God to the whole family. Don't ever consider her a burden as she might become better than a son one day.
I can’t believe a mother forced her 11yr old child to marry her rapist.
California passed laws in 2018 to combat this issue.

Yet some people say that this only happens in South Asian and Middle Eastern communities, while there are a few countries in either of these regions that even banned it.
Horrific.
To all those defending this by saying
"Oh but this doesn't happen everyday. Its worse in the middle east (or any other country for that matter)."
Its not about how prevalaint child marriages are over there.

"Unlike most Western countries, half of the US states do not have a legal minimum age of marriage."
A simple wikipedia search will let you know this.
