- In the USA it is still legal in 40 states for children to get married. Between 2000 and 2018 nearly 300,000 minors were married in the USA, mostly girls, married to adult men. The trauma of forced child marriages stays with these women throughout their lives. Today, some are bravely speaking out about their experiences and trying to stop child marriages in America.

I live in Poland. If anyone here said publicly that they support child marriage, that person would have no place in politics or in any public office never ever again. And probably they would also loose all their teeth very soon

Michigan passed a law banning child marriage in September of 2023. The age of consent is now 18

parents should never be able to sign their children away to be married. It’s a red flag for grooming and will ruin they’re children’s lives forever. My heart breaks for these children that lost or lose their innocents to monsters. These women are incredibly strong and brave to confront there evil pasts. God bless you all. I know someone that this happened to. Her mom and step dad actually sold her to an older man when she was 13 or 14. It’s a very sad story. Alabama it happened there.

Getting young girls married early is about controlling them so they will be stuck in it. Notice he didn't say they are happy. I once read an article by a religious man about why child marriage should be allowed and it blatantly boiled down to "so they won't have enough time to form their sense of self or their own opinions and leave the religion or their religious husband" They want child marriage because underage girls are easier to control and it's much harder for them to leave the marriage, even once they become adults. They have never had independence. They may not even have a driver license, a bank account, credit card, never had a job, they may not have even finished high school. By the time they turn 18 they likely already have a child. If their husband is abusive, what will they do? Who will they turn to? The parents the married them off? How will they support themselves and their child? They can't, so they are stuck in that marriage. And that's the point.

I hope more people will delve into this topic so we can end legal child marriages in the US and elsewhere. I was married as a teenager and there were so many things that came with it that were traumatic and hard to go through but the thing that pissed me off so much as a married teenager that really still affects me today is that I went to try to get my ears pierced when I was 16 and they said I needed parents permission and I told them I was married and they said I needed my husbands permission and I couldn’t believe that it was ok for adults to marry me off and have me start my wifely duties yet I wasn’t allowed to get my ears pierced….. I couldn’t get over and am now 38 and still haven’t pierced my ears yet, every time I get close to doing it I just can’t. It probably sounds stupid to anyone reading this but having to be an adult and engage in being someone’s wife as a young girl who is not even allowed to pierce her ears should not be allowed and seeing this video and knowing that people out there want to stop this and see that it is wrong brought me back to that moment and how it was so much more wrong than I even realized at that time. What terrifies me the most is that young girls do not yet have control over their lives. They may not have a license or car, their birth certificate or social security number, credit cards, a bank account, etc. So if anything goes wrong they have no means by which to pick themselves up and get out of a bad situation. Unfortunately, for many adults who engage in this practice, I think that's kinda the point 😕
I know how trama can last a lifetime. The age of so called consent to have sex..is only 16 in most states. Sometimes lower.. esp in other countries. My trama was getting pregnant at 16...looking for love in the wrong places. Yes I was easy pickings...but tryed to escape the married baby daddy ..and an abusive family. I still had spirit. ..hope..but the family told the baby daddy..where I was ..and he left his wife pregnant.... again...and I became pregnant again..at the same time. .So that deceit broke my spirit..and life Has been rough. My stepsister was married off at 16 to a 27 year old man. Her mother ok'd it and her father (my stepdad) could not stop it as he did not have custody. They were deeply Pentecostal and the whole congregation was cult minded. Thankfully she got away after having a son at 17 and she is doing much better today. Although Its still legal to this day here in KY.
i grew up in the first state to outlaw marriage for any reason under 18 - in *2018*. you'd think that was an indisputable good move - but the backlash was shocking.

As a journalist who has written on this subject, I have one problem with this otherwise fine little doc.
As journalists, we are bending over so far backward not to stigmatize entire groups, we are in effect colluding in this shame. How?
We do not name those groups, those ethnic groups, such as South Asian and African communities, as well as ultra-orthodox Mormon and evangelical Christian sects and ultra-orthidox Jewish communities, whose lobbying and occasional voting blocs are keeping these medieval child marriage laws on the books in states like California.
Yes, I have voted as a progressive all my life, and have, I believe, done a good job keeping my "wokeness" out of my journalism.
However, this is a case, as we journalists learned with Donald Trump's persistent lying, where our old rules for journalism that gives equal weight to both sides of an issue, allows falsehoods to be treated with equal weight as the truth.
By allowing certain groups to hide behind our reluctance to call them out, we are helping to prolong this despicable practice.

Holy crap!!! I grew up involved in the church they showed at Murrieta Hot Springs. I’ve only begun deconstructing that experience in the last couple years. I’ve never heard anyone else call it a cult. It’s always been an “non-denominational evangelical church.” That small section just validated me in such a huge way.

England just moved from age 16 with parents;' consent to 18 (Scotland is 16).As age for consent generally is 16 I think 16 was okay as some cultures which do not allow s ex outside marriage should be on a par with the age for consent to s ex. however no minimum is very disturbing. Ut was 12 in the UK in about 1900 and 12 under Roman law and indeed the Catholic code of canon law for the girl IF the law of the state where she lives has that age.
Just...wow. I had no idea this was a thing in the US, and even less of an idea that there are states where it's legal...worse yet that there are actually Americans who support child marriage. WTAF? And did I hear it right at the end where they said Michigan is one of the states that still has no bans or age limits on child marriage? I'm not originally from MI, but I live here now, and I'm shocked, as well as ashamed of MI for this...especially since MI has a female governor who claims to be progressive.
It's a lot easier to live in England when a single parent than in USA.

ok so I had a google of the age of consent in the USA and minimum age for marriage for eg the age of consent in Arizona is 18 but you can get married at 16 it does say this A person can marry at 16, as long as one party isn't more than three years older than the minor, and 1) their parent consents, or 2) they are emancipated. in NZ the age of consent is 16.....at 18 you can get married without your parents consent. I dont understand having an age of consent older then the minimum age of marriage.so doe this mean if say 2 17 year olds if they are not married cannot consent to sex but if they got consent from their parents they can?

As an American all I have to say is WTF?! I refuse to believe this like I refuse to believe we ever had an orange Florida man for President.
It is horrible, but no girl at 16 says she is still a little girl. She is a teenager, not an adult yet, but not a little girl either. All sexual activity before 19 and outside marriage for males and females should be illegal because both are bad. Girls before the age of 19 are at higher risk of pregnancy complications and consequent health issues. The babies of teenage mothers too are at higher risk of being born premature.
Please realize that marriage and sexual activity are different topics.
As an asexual, I ask: who tf do you think you are to outright forbid allosexuals of any orientation to have sex? Do you want to ban 35+ yearolds from having sex because of very likely pregnancy complicatiins?

This has nothing to do with "other cultures." It is in the USA, among normal culturally American people.
Is there a difference between forced child marriages and consensual marriages? What is the difference between underage, 15,16, 17, and child marriages? The 18 age of consent is an adult decision that started hundreds of years ago, as a means of adults controlling children's money. Many countries consider fourteen as adulthood. The Muslims consider7,8,9 as proper. Just like the profet Mohammad.
When these laws are overwhelmingly used to marry underage girls to adult men, even men who raped them before marriage and would normally go to jail, yes... there is a big difference. The laws do not stipulate that these children can only marry other children. Even if the adult commit a crime by having sex with a child they can avoid going to prison by marrying that child. This leads to the child being pressured to marry their abuser so they won't go to jail. And if it's rape to sleep with a child how it is not rape to sleep with them after they were married to someone by their parents? It's just legalizing raping children if you marry them first.
Oh boy, please educate yourself a little bit. This is not a random adult decision, adulthood is a biological fact. 18 is the age where your body stops growing and is fully developed.
