What did you learn when you were a total beginner? Shrimping and they sent you home?
I heard some academy teach only break fall, shrimping, front and back rolls then send them home.

There are many individuals out there with more knowledge than one could imagine, they will forget more than most will ever learn, but that will not always translate to being a great coach or teacher. What makes a great teacher is their ability to take a complex topic very specific in nature, yet break it down in a way where the inner workings of it become clear to the total novice. They have a way with words to almost make them visual like painting a picture and this is what Keenan is able to do. Also very important in my opinion is the "why" behind the logic of it all. I am able to understand something much more if I am not only aware of "how" to perform the move itself but have a clear grasp of "why" I am doing it this particular way.

For all y'all who think this isn't for total beginner. This was one of the first skills I learned. Very very useful especially for flow rolling. Just because you can't do it the first couple times doesn't mean it's not for beginners

Honestly best tutorial online. So many times so many different schools teach moves or techniques and don't touch on bigger concepts of control spacing or strategy. It like learning how the knight moves on the chess board but not knowing the rules of chess.

kinda true. but most of the time you get taught hoe to get in the position where you can aply the moves you want, which you then can use for other situatiuons as well, that's what the rolling is for

    • @vittocrazi
      @vittocrazi 6 років тому +28

guard is the position where you are on your back, and have your legs around your opponent (and closed because your feet are close to each other, thus closing around your opponent. the idea is that it may look like a weak position at first glance, but it comes with lots of courses of action, with a relatively high level of defense.

You've got to be at least a genuine white belt enrolled in a jiujitsu training program. It's probably too much for completely inexperienced people. Closed guard is a day 1 concept.

4 major positions are closed guard, back , cross side and mount. Knowing even what those are will give you a huge advantage, even if you don't know what to do from them. Maybe take a look at some basic control on UA-cam. Tho we would all love to see you on the mat if you're not yet.

Been doing BJJ for just 4 weeks, and been drilling this last week at my gym. I like how he breakes it down, very simple. Totally easy for a beginner to do. Just have to drill it a couple of dozen times to make sure you don't miss any of the steps. One thing I really liked was playing closed guard while partner tryed to get out, and my only job was to use this sweep while he know what I was doint. Still very effective. Nce work man.

To be honest the flower sweep as a beginner can be a difficult move same with the scissor sweep especially when there is a weight difference . I've been doing BJJ for over two years and I'm just now able to consistently flower sweep bigger people that know how to keep their balance and apply pressure . Everything takes time and you will be polishing moves that you learned in your first week for years . Gotta start somewhere though .

This is PERFECT! I'm trying to learn some practical self-defense for myself and this is great instruction.
The way it's explained is what I like. I don't train, I don't roll. My belt is leather. I understand this and i can do this.
Keenan, you f@#$ing rock! The first time I watched a BJJ event was Metamoris when you faced Vinny Magalhaes. The whole event was awesome. Ideas an instant fan.
Now I'm a fan of your teaching.
You don't just explain WHAT to do, you explain WHY as well. If I see the mechanics without understanding the progression of them, I can't remember them. I still remember all the basic principles after watching once.
If the rest of your vids are structured like this, definitely worth $25/month. Thank you for sharing!

Another criticism, sorry, as a traditionalist since 1980, I never saw a white belt allowed to wear a black gi. Any other color, but black was usually reserved for the instructors. I know I'm a dinosaur and I should put blinders on to the youngsters. After all, I still just wear white. lol

Can you do this nogi? Instead of his sleeve you take his wrist. But how can you pull him down in the beginning without collar? A grip to the neck? Any idea?

So what’s before Total Beginners? Ultimate beginners?
Cause this is a 9 part move, that includes a sweep. And I was thinking more in lines of: here’s a one-two step triangle with a shriek to distract your opponent
