    Result is great. Less great is that you use dirty polishing pads when buffing, at least it seems so. What about holograms after polishing. 95% you have to finish with a DA polisher to remove these fine scratches (they leave some clouds on the paint).

    Good vid but there are a few problems with this method and a few misinformations. First and foremost orange peel like that is caused by poor gun setup, not the right materials for the temperature or user error. If undergoing this procedure use at least 3 coats of clear or you will rub too much off and loose protection on your basecoat.
    Secondly by doing this you will have glass like finish that doesnt match the strucrure of the rest of the paint and mostly looks awfull and repaired to everyone that knows anything about paintwork.
    Thirdly as stated before this method usualy isnt used in bodyshops. The only thing we polish are local dirt nibs, the off the gun finish should look as good as the factory paint. We only do this on more expensive cars (bentleys, lamborghinis, etc - cars which are wetsended and polished from factory)
    I understand this is diy, but probably better to perfect the painting strategy to only sand out dust nibs (yes it is possible at home). Thats why good bodywork is expensive it takes time to learn.
    Anyways dont take this as me being a wiseguy just correcting some points you made in the video, and to tell you practice makes perfect.
    Besides that very good content guys! Keep up the good work

      @@calebforester418 not being a smart a** but you're spending way too much time & effort & that sounds like a lot of unnecessary clear is being removed. With the right compounds & buffers I never sand above 3000, a lot of times I dont even go that high. I use a 15mm throw DA with 5in disc. For heavy cut I would use 3M Perfect It #1 but it dusts way too much so I switched to V32 from Chemical Guys IF I need a super agressive cut. Just changing from heavy pad to orange or lighter will adjust to a med cut. Then I follow with "3D- ONE" on my Griots polisher (8mm throw) . The 3D-ONE is a hybrid compound that you can orange (or yellow) pad first then, use same compound on white or black pad & it finishes as a polish with a very nice shine. Most times the 3D-ONE with a yellow pad is more than enough for heavy/moderate correcting so I'll just go orange then white (All Hex Logic pads). U will save a lot of time & end up with the same quality finish . Hope that helps

U can cut orange peel with a Da, a yellow pad + V32 from chemical guys but a wet sand would be faster then buff with a medium compound and an orange pad. Slippery slope. If you don't have a paint depth gauge done even try this, if it's repainted then your rolling the dice, if you done keep at least 2 mills of clear your paint will fade over time.

    • @nathancarruthers254
      @nathancarruthers254 3 роки тому +1

      A paint depth gauge does not tell any body how much clearcoat is left on that panel, it tells you how much paint is on the whole panel from the clearcoat all the way to the substrate. So unless you know how much film build you have on your clearcoat, then a paint depth gauge is irrelevant.

    • @dustin3700
      @dustin3700 3 роки тому

      @@nathancarruthers254 it's not irrelevant, it gives you an idea, typically on vehicles from the last 20 years you should never go below 3.8-5 depending on the starting number. For example my scion had an average of 4.2 starting and I know from experience that Toyota and most Japanese vehicles have thin layers I would never go below 3.8. It's a tool you use in conjunction with knowledge and experience. If a customer tells me I want every scratch out I explain to them basically your paint will fade much faster and I won't be liable for and damage.

    • @nathancarruthers254
      @nathancarruthers254 3 роки тому

      @@dustin3700 yeah OK so youre right that it will tell you if a panel has had previous repair work, as long as you have the knowledge like you say. But when I say irrelevant I mean that because you literally only have the film build of the clearcoat to polish which should usually be around 30 to 40 microns depending on the type of clearcoat used the other 150 microns that the micrometer is reading doesn't mean a thing. I've seen so many people (especially traders) that come with a scratch that has clearly broken the clearcoat down to the base coat and say I've checked it there's 200 microns on there so it'll polish out. Well these guys need to throw their paint depth gauges in the bin because all we have to polish out before paint work is potentially 30 microns upwards. Even then it's a risk because if its anything over 90-110 microns it's probably been painted and then if that's the case, we don't know how much clearcoat has been applied previously and is it UHS, HS or MS. Has it been put on with a 1.2 1.3 or something else. Has the previous repair flatted it loads prior to polishing, did he get a run in that area and has already flatted it out so that area is already very thin. So many unknown variables when it comes to polishing factory or aftermarket paintwork that people don't consider and think because they own a micrometer, they can fix anything!

    • @nathancarruthers254
      @nathancarruthers254 3 роки тому

      @@dustin3700 also you do right not taking any liability for faded or damaged paintwork

    • @dustin3700
      @dustin3700 3 роки тому +1

      @@nathancarruthers254 True, paint correction is just a risky business in general especially on newer vehicles where you don't even have enough clear on most vehicles do even do a "heavy cut" those days are pretty much gone. The clear is just to thin and soft. I wonder how the new cars will look in 20 years. I think ceramic all in one polishes are the best route for the daily driver, takes almost nothing off, fills well and can last 6-12 months with maintenance.

    First off all , you have to tape the edges and around the lights ,second of all , 1500 is way too rough to use on clear coat , you should start with 2000 , then , 3000 , finally 5000 then buff it.
