Not checking my phone at least one hour after getting up has been a game changer for me. Now I determine how my day goes, not messages from people, news or social media.
I think Stoics don’t talk about joy because it just was and happened but didn’t need to be broadcast. I find so much joy as a Stoic everyday but no one would know. It’s personal.
This is really interesting. I was thinking about this a lot recently. And I, for my self, am missing the joy in the stoic literature as well. But they sure must have had their reason for saying that passion is not meant to be "lived out to the outside" - at least thats what Marc Aurel wrote in his journal. When I think about a day at a time that really requires me to put it into perspective, I think of the following ― Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant. This video's fantastic. Thanks for putting a practical lens on modern day stoicism. I recently analysed stoicism through the lens of Bruce Wayne / Batman, as I thought it would be an entertaining yet educational way to bring stoicism to life.

Your videos have confirmed and enhanced lessons I learned when sepsis could have ended everthing for me. Whether they take on its philosophy is up to them.
Nice! I got rid of all social media , which I have loved! These videos are all I fill my empty spots with. It’s enriching and fulfilling while learning .
Many years ago I wrote down what I thought a perfect day would look like. Today, I am living days like that almost every day and they are very similar to yours. Great video.
There an element of the samurai to the stoic thinking, that fatalistic thinking where the Hagakure says your first morning thought should be you could die today, and your last thought at night should be you could die tomorrow. Appreciate what you have now. Do your utmost now, whatever that looks like (for the samurai it was service to their master). I know I am guilty of forgetting this, letting life just float past sometimes, and videos like this remind me I ought to be better at paying close attention. Especially to the kids, they're already growing so fast and soon will be gone off to their own lives. For me, it'll take discipline, and the removal of many distractions. But every day can be a bit better and creating the small things to appreciate is a start. I am going to go back through this video and make notes of all the points. Thanks for this, and thanks for all you do, Ryan.
Yes..I had wondered about joy...in the life of a Stoic....I have moments of joy that I'm grateful for. I've been big on disciplining myself with exercise etc.
Oh god, THANK YOU for using "humbling" correctly. Also, this is wonderful. It isn't about how much you get done, or how long you work, or how much money you make if you don't remember WHY you are doing it. I know that I can be called out for not being dedicated to the mission statement, but MY mission is to have a good life with my family. THAT'S why I work. Thank you thank you for putting this out into the obsessed-with-productivity world.
I'm surprised you don't go back and reread your journals. I've found that going back and re-reading them helps me see what patterns I've grown out of and what I still need to work on. Was I focused on the right things? Were my anxieties justified? What did I intend to work on? Did it matter? I do this every year now, and its been immensely helpful.
My grandparents lived through very tough times financially and the work they did was demanding and brought little reward, so when I’d ask them the question, “What were the best years of your life do you think?” they’d reply, “some best days here and there, and they added up to best weeks, months, and years - the rain the beans need doesn’t get dropped on them in one day”
For young men to learn what a good man is through their father; you've given a priceless gift. As a prison worker I see the loss of that example in many of these men. Frederick Douglass said "It is easier to raise strong children that to fix broken men."
This is great and helpful for someone who could use some more structure and planning in their day. But what about unloading and loading the dishwasher? Picking up your kids' toys and messes? All the little things that take up time. Planning dinner, going grocery shopping, making dinner, feeding the kids, cleaning the kitchen before and after people eat, which includes snack time? Driving your kids to activities? Picking them up from school? That's a much more realistic day for most people, especially if you are a woman and a mom. I wonder if your wife is behind the scenes doing all of that. If I didn't have to do all of those chores that I just listed, I'd totally be writing books, reading and frolicking in the ocean waves!

A few points/counter-arguments: Why should one base one's life on good days? Do the bad days teach us nothing? "I don't want random social media alerts to determine whether I'm going to be happy, or upset, or angry or distracted." - Is it the event or circumstance that determines our emotions, or how we choose to react to the event or circumstance? Regardless, I feel that these two questions are worth contemplating. You are clearly, at this present moment, much further along the path of life than I am. Thus, I believe I have a lot to learn from a person like you. But one must not forget that no man is omniscient. We always learn. Please keep these two questions in your mind until you can, with certainty, provide yourself with an accurate answer. It could be beneficial.

Great video Ryan. Contrasting how you structure your day against how I structure (or don't structure) mine gives so much insight into where I can improve. I spend so many of my days investing or preparing for some future day that never comes. This mindset shift that your life is made up of days well lived is very insightful. I actually got emotional towards the end of the video when I realized how much I'm letting my kid's lifes slip by without really taking time with them and appreciating each day with them.
I'm so happy to have found your channel. I didn't know this was you and your channel. I've been wanting to buy the daily Stoic, stillness is the key, Lives of the Stoics, ego is my enemy. All of them are in my cart, just waiting for a good sale on Amazon. And this book "Lives of the Stoics: The Art of Living from Zeno to Marcus Aurelius", it simply resonated with me, I even saw the book in bookshop, I stood there in the aisle reading for about good 10 minutes, it just kept me hooked, I randomly read, what really caught my interest was the lines where you explained about how the stoics used to walk for miles or something, I vaguely recall this. I wanted to buy but left it only for the sake of price. But I'm definitely going to buy them this time. Your videos carry such strong vibes that it immediately freshens up our minds! Thank you, Sir! Love and regards from India. Happy New Year to you and your beautiful family. Stay blessed! 💐
I see how you live your principles Ryan, so very well done. I have read your books ego is the enemy, the obstacle is the way, stillness is the key, and am currently on the lives of the stoics. For the wisdom in these books you have made engaging and relatable, very well done.

I saw you on impact theory and now I love your content
Thank you for sharing and improving the quality of my life/day.
I learn so much from you, yours videos are really good.
A meaningful life can be extremely satisfying even in the midst of hardship whereas a meaningless life is a terrible ordeal no matter how satisfying it is.

One of your best videos Ryan, thanks for sharing!
You are my hero Ryan❤️❤️❤️ lots of respect from MULTAN Pakistan.
Mental preparedness and Reflection are key tasks for me - important on the daily commute to/from work, running through the mental checklists on morning readiness and then to reflect back on what happened to better prepare for another day, if allowed that bonus. Never take your day for granted, Momento Mori
Thank you Ryan. It’s good to be reminded
One personal note which might be of value is to enjoy breaking the patterns as much as setting them. There is great joy in spontaneity on top of foundations of discipline. Not having two kids helps I'm sure, just felt it necessary to connect the dots for more creative spirits. Great video and thank you for the content and colors.
Thank you! Love this! I am sharing it with all the people I love!🌻😎
One of your best videos
Brilliant. Thanks for this.
This was both sobering and beautiful, thanks Ryan!
Ryan you make me 😊 6:00-7:00 a.m man lol I've already been up by 4:00-4:30 and punched into work by 5:55 for my 6:00 o'clock shift because if your early your on time and if your on time your late. 😊
Incredible day and video @Ryan. You inspire me. Thank you
I went through almost 2 years of long Covid before finding this channel 🤦♂️💫

The moment I stopped thinking anything you had to say of your own thoughts was worth listening to.. keep the good stoic quotes coming tho 🙏🏻
Been obsessed with your page and stoicism the last week, thank you for your contributions. You don't know how much I could use this info and flame. Shout out to the Adrian Berenguer "art of loneliness" he's the best🔥. Stay blessed, continue to react properly. 🙏 I am cursed with an illness that doesnt promise a day tomorrow, it killed the confidence in every action I did, and even before. I lost so much because of it as well. This philosophy is one that has been helping mentally, and soon overall.
Wake up at 6
walk 3 miles with kids
journal
then to the office for deep work (2-3 hrs of work until 10 or 11)
[so in theory he gets up at 6 and gets to the office by 8]
reads books
goes home around 3 or 4PM (works a 7 hour day)
Wow this is probably my very favorite video I have seen of yours ( love all your stuff) but this one really moved me !! ❤️ .. love how You see things , love seeing how you spend your day! Also love that you workout in the evenings 💪🏻
Are those books stacked like Jenga behind you?
Looks awesome doesn’t it
Amazing Bro
“Early” is 6 or 7 am?! My day is a quarter done by then. It’s the best part of the day.
Thanks a lot. Amazing video, amazing editing. Huge love to your family.
I started waiting 3 morning pages. I really look forward to writing my pages. But I also know it can easily slouch.
I was quite trilled to learn about your daily morning routine. It is great that you are only accountable to your self as a writer. Some of us don't have the luxury of going for walks before the start of the day as we have to get ready and drive to our respective work places. How do you advice or what does Stoics say for people who dont have the opportunity to do morning walks before the start of the day?
Shorten the walk and wake up bit earlier
So inspiring. Thank you.
Wow after I show your videos I use stoics in my life
I'm really enjoying your videos. I find I am very attracted to the stoic philosophies, and I will explore more of it.
Very inspiring truly. Thank you for showing us the way Ryan!
An excellent video that makes philosophy so practical! Could you create a step-by-step guide on how to build a Stoic morning routine?
I completely agree, this video really brings Stoicism to life! A Stoic morning routine can set the tone for the whole day. I think it starts with practicing gratitude and setting intentions, but I’d love to know-how do you think we can best deal with distractions during the morning routine? What’s your approach to staying focused?
This was such a great video. Thank you.
Love this!
Wow!! Just getting in to this stuff. What a revelation!!!
Golden advice! Which idiots would thumbs down this??!
That sounds like an awesome life/routine! Very cool. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent ❤️
Loved this video!
This comment will be lost among the others, but I had to at least say it. Thanks for making this video, I learned a lot from it and it came at an important time in my life.
