Why Netherite Replacing Diamond is Huge

- With the Minecraft 1.16 Nether Update, diamond gear has finally been ousted as the highest tier in the game by new Netherite. This is a historic change to Minecraft's tech tree and could have huge consequences to the future roadmap.

The way Netherite is implemented was very smart, make it rare, hard to find, but you only need to find little of it and combine it with diamond materials, so you cant skip the diamond stage.
you need to find 4 for each piece of gear so if you want to do a full set (sword ,pick shovel , axe and all the pieces of armor) you'll need 32 Netherite, you'd need 33 diamond for the same set (28-32 without the shovel), so you still have to mine a lot to get it
"diamond is dead"
This process makes sure diamonds won't be obsolete, which is super important. This change is really cool, the way they implemented it is really well.
@@timewarpdrive77 you can't

Since 1.9 controversy, Mojang have never introduced any new game-changer features. They were scared getting another backlash from players. The introduction of a new ore really shows how Mojang finally decided to take a leap of faith and take a huge step in the game development. In my opinion, this means that Mojang will keep this trend and we will get to see even more unusual and interesting mechanics.
Minecraft is heading toward it's 2d cousin progression, my only question is how close will Mojang go
Even though Netherite isn't your typical mineable ore, it is indeed a leap forward. I'm honestly glad they did it.
I have to wonder if they had the foresight to do this because of Hytale? (In some capacity, not wholly) Because I could see Minecraft's zietgheist loosing some air when Hytale comes out. Given it's driven by a team that popularity alone shows they understand VERY well why Minecraft was so successful and fun.
Minecraft taking the leap to try something new, and Hytale pushing forward to not live in it's shadow. I hope we get to see the relationship between these games blossom into a healthy rivalry, for the good of everyone involved.

If you do the math, for a full set of diamond armor and tools (axe, shovel, hoe, sword, and pickaxe), it needs 35 diamonds. For a full netherite set of armor and tools, there is a need for 35 diamonds, 32 gold, and 32 netherite scrap.

I can't get over how awesome this video is.
Not just your excellent substantiated disquisition about the topic -- but especially how you used footage from the game in such subtle ways to highlight the points you're making.
I love the way Netherite has been implemented, it's not a huge mandatory expansion on top of diamond. But I find another substance arguably more revolutionary in 1.16 -- Gold. Wearing it makes Piglins friendly? You can barter gold with them? Gold was useless, but is now essential for safety in the Nether, and can be converted into all kinds of other resources. They're finding brilliant ways to break materials out of the tier system!
Which makes me think: What if they expanded more into "silly quirks". Heavy armor makes you run a bit slower. Iron gear is dangerous to wear in a thunderstorm. A leather outfit increases your horse riding speed, and bows/tridents/lances/spears do increased damage when used from a horse. Small shields allow more vision, but big shields protect more. Flails with long chains have more reach, but slower swing. Wands, carefully constructed from various wood types, infused with rare mob drops can sling spider webs into the world, heal a friend, or lift a mob into the air. I think there are so many ways to make combat more interesting using variety & archetype choices, instead of just tiering!
wands could rock
FINALLY SOMEBODY NOT MAKING A DUMB MEME AND FINALLY APRECIATING HOW PRETTY IS THIS VIDEO
I see this as the beginning of Minecraft expanding outwards, not building inwards. Instead of adding an overworld biome, or mob, or fixing up villages (all which are good), mojang is starting to delve into the fantastical, something that I've always hoped for (which is why im so hyped for Hytale). Minecraft, in my opinion, needs to expand outward, adding cool, new items that, while not changing the game's core, increase the depth and progression, and exploration part of the game.

The way how you get Netherite is great!
Imagine if they introduce "Enderite" wich is as strong as Netherite, but has other secondary effects.
Then you had to choose, which "Diamond Upgrade" you want.
We need stuff that's only in the high loot pools like nametags and saddles, except you can't fish them
That's a really good idea. Like maybe Netherite has reduced kickback and more fire resistance, but Enderite has reduced fall damage and better resistance to negative effects like levitation and poison.
Do you really have to ask why I think the Enderite thing is a good idea?
Yeah and you can only get it from killing the Ender dragon. The amount you get from it should be equal to or less then needed for one person so it gives the incentive to farm it if you are on a sever.

Kerem Akyildiz diamond isn’t “the symbol” of the game. It’s an ore, plain and simple. If the progression system is changed then so what. Also netherite isn’t even required, it’s just something you CAN get. Diamond is still REALLY good and it’s not like you’re able to bypass it.

Leather armor gang unite! We are too cheap to wear iron outside of active combat and use stone tools for everything.
The thing is, although it's a tiny difference between tiers, it's treated like a massive advance. You *feel* like you've gotten further. You've upgraded from Iron to Diamond armour? Cool! Not too massive of a protection boost, but suddenly you have the confidence to go hunting in the nether. Upgrade from Iron tools to Diamond tools? Well, the difference is still marginal, but it just seems like you're stronger. The idea of fighting the Ender Dragon with iron is absurd to most people, yet fighting them with Diamond has always been a perfectly reasonable idea. It's what it *feels* like that matters, not what it *is* like.
"Feeling strong is more important than being strong." -Alexander Supertramp
This change kind of miss the point, as the game's primary progression curve still revolves around enchantment and enchantment make all the difference, not the tool material.
At maxed out player effective HP (protection 4 diamond armor) a player can practically swim in lava for 30 second and survive a player continuously attacking by eating beef. Compare that to unenchanted armor and you are looking at 10-15 second max survival time or 4-5 shot with a power 5 bow.
Not gonna lie, I rarely use diamonds whatsoever.
Like, I basically just use iron until I can throw mending on my diamond kit, and just keep it for display until then. There's one exception to this: If I decide to go the village construction route, I tend to produce so many emeralds that I never mine and instead just buy a full diamond kit.
Diamonds in Minecraft can be obtained without ever mining these days because of shipwrecks and buried chests.
I also usually go into the nether with only an iron kit because doing so with diamond is an unnecessary risk. Basically, the only times I use a full diamond kit is specifically for the end fight and/or wither fights. Else, there's not much of a reason to bother.

This is why I like Terraria more than Minecraft. You can't just be done with a world in a day with nothing left to look forward to. In Terraria I spent like 120 hours of playing before killing the final boss. During that time I had spent a huge amount of time just exploring, grinding and building too. And the mining was fun too, because you never just mine, you usually kill monsters and look for ores at the same time. Let's face it, mining in Minecraft has some occasional glimpses of interestingness in forms of caves and... gravel I guess but ultimately is just boring. Every cave even looks exactly the same with just ravines and mining complexes. There are like 4 monsters to meet....etc etc.
I could go on and on. This is why I told everyone who asked me if Terraria is just 2D Minecraft I answered that Minecraft is just very basic 3D version of Terraria. If Minecraft goes this route and adds enough interesting items, locations, colors and just overall stuff to do, it will atract a lot of new players and make the current ones cream their pants with every new update.
Really well put together video, Subscribed!
The thing is, Minecraft is considered a simple and peaceful survival game. Not a colour filled, bullet hell, fast paced RPG. Sure, the game can be improved, but in the direction of Terraria? I disagree.
@@terrylap6132 Why do you disagree? Would Minecraft necessarily loose its peacefullness if it became more Terraria like? I mean, you would still have your house, your garden and a dog you are afraid to take hunt with you because you already gave him a name and maybe grew a little attached to. But now you could leave your peacefull house and standard mines and go somewhere, where the very hard monsters and good loot are. And after that you would dare to go to an even more dangerous and rewarding location knowing that there are many more you would have to get better to visit. If you truly believe your argument, I imagine you don't like Nether and End as well. After all, both are harder dimensions, that challenge this peacefull playstyle (Even if only by just a bit, which is my complaint).
@@The0rbiter Of course it would lose it’s peacefulness, from my view point, Minecraft is a peaceful game supposedly to reflect the dullness of everyday life. It’s illogical to add crazy bosses and five hundred different hostile mobs to a game that revolves and depends on peacefulness. It’s simplicity and flexibility is what attracts many players, not the five hundred mobs and six thousand weapons if they were indeed to be added.
I think someone should just make a Minecraft-like game based on terraria's concepts. A game that takes the best of both games, and puts them together. It should also use something other than squares and cubes, because squares and cubes are boring. Maybe hexagons would be better, or a different platonic solid that can be stacked into an infinite crystal.

I feel like netherite doesn't really disrupt the independence of the player in the way you're talking about. Diamond is still very strong. That, in combination with the difficulty in attaining netherite, will make netherite a much more optional and late-game part the the tech tree.
I don’t see it as an issue within the game. I am quite in favor of changing up the late game.
As mentioned in the video, diamond is the brand of Minecraft. That I think is the biggest issue with the update.
Thank you, I was wondering how to implement my multi-branched tech tree into my mod for the ideal minecraft.
I like the shot you used for 1:46-2:33, very interesting, exciting, almost cinematic and yet very simple
Diamond still has use due to a few reasons.
1. You need diamond to make netherite tools
2. Because crafting netherite remove enchantments some player may keep their good set of diamond armour which can be used when flying over the void in the end.
3. I believe diamond can and will still be used for server currency due to netherites rarity.
X Knight I support your comment, Up with Diamonds, down with Netherite
Netherite could be a sort of blackmarket currency, while emerald's for special sales and diamond for high tier sales in servers
@@ItsChevnotJeff I do like that idea though

I really don't feel like Netherite is "replacing" diamond. Your goal when you start is still "Getting diamonds", not "Getting netherite". The latter is more of a bonus that you can try in late game.
but its not replacing, its more like enhanching diamond because you still need diamond in order to mine ancient debris and you need 4 of the smelted one to make an ingot, and remember that its deep on lava lake so is very risky for new player. Considering all of this diamond will still be useful for newbie

I really like how they made gold useful in the nether, I mean it makes sense it would have a purpose, and the nether uses the same items as the overworld to stay protected in 1.15, so using a bad item for the role of protection in the harsh nether was the right choice for this role

This video makes me think: what's gonna happen to the end city loot? It's supposed to be the best you can get, so then you'd expect Netherrite tools (as it's in all aspects better). However, finding Nether-related items in the End feels a little weird for me. My prediction: Mojang plans to add something similar for the End: a rare material that buffs a diamond tool in a different way. And make the two mutually exclusive, so you'll have to choose between Nether and End tools. This could be interesting.
I can see it. Branch in the tree.

Would be interesting to something like tools/equipment that "warp" back to you upon your death (since End related stuff is usually about teleportation) with some other kind of special bonus. Not sure how one would implement that into the game, but it is sort of a concept that plays well off of netherite's whole floating in lava thing.

you talk about modded mc like you took one look at the ftb homepage and went: "aight mate its just questing then"
yeah i felt the same it depends what mods you install not all mods are the same.
He makes some good points though, most of the popular modpacks on UA-cam have been purely questing, but thankfully I do see a lot of that starting to change. Quests have started to become optional and more to serve as a guide for mods you’re not familiar with in packs like MC Eternal or as a guide to custom tweaked progression systems in packs like FTB Interactions, which is a great way to go.
To be fair, this mentality has been present in some of the modded community during this time as well, as seen in the popular magic mods, which have branching progressions of their own, and are purely designed to give you fun new toys to play with, especially Witchery and to a lesser extent Thaumcraft and Astral

@I'm Mr Anonymous what a madlad i tell ya
I mean, depending on the overall response the public has to this new tier, we could be looking at much more freedom in what Mojang does in the future, adding more powerful items and bosses could be coming our way. Though you could always say that this sort of thing would ruin what makes Minecraft Minecraft. Minecraft is very sandbox oriented, it has some progression and goal systems, but as SimplySarc said, this game is about making your own goals. Adding more tiers of bosses and weapons could force people down a more directed route, which not everyone will love. It's a very hard balance between these two situations, freedom for the player and giving them goals to strive for so they don't feel lost. Though this small addition to the game is sure to have either large repercussions, or to disappear into unuse.
Yeah but rideable Ender Dragon though... That dragon egg has been a tease for too fuckin' long I'll tell ya that.
Terraria os a perfect example of wjy that *wont* happen. It has a very detailed and complex conquest system and tech tree yet the building and wiring communities are amazing and the long list of bosses and ores have only added more creativity as it also adds in more blocks etc.
@@SinVex-wi1eo have you ever seen stampylongheads playthrough as he shows how the conquest and building/intrinsic nature of the game dont hurt eachother.
But do you get the dia tools, slay the end dragoon and enter the end cities because of the "goal" of doing it, or because you just want the shulker boxes and the better tools so that you can build more amazing things? How are even better tools and cool but harder to obtain blocks going to change that? You're still going to want to obtain them for the same reason, aren't you? You're still going to get all those difficult blocks because they would make an amazing floor in your new base. The tools are just a bonus, at least you wont loose them in lava any more (I hate having to get new armor and tools) :P
Yes but the thing is it is quite easy to run out of goals in minecraft. I mean most of my worlds ended after I got an elytra and built what I wanted to. I don't like using redstone personally. I think you're wrong on the point of End Cities already "maxing out" the loot tables. End City loot, aside from shulker boxes and the Elytra, is generally pretty bad. I don't feel 3 diamonds and a diamond pickaxe with Efficiency 2 is max-tier loot. They're already pretty stingy with loot, Mojang has so many items to play with yet they're giving away bad enchants. Where's mending? Max enchant diamond tools? Even a nice bow would be a good addition. I personally feel all loot in the game is bad, from early game to end game.
I think it works well because it’s only a modification to your diamond armour...you still have to get the diamond armor but you can also take diamond one step further and improve it just a little more for added durability and other buffs in exchange for lots of labour.
When I saw the netherite sword I immediately thought of your statement saying “diamonds have to be the best and rarest ore” when talking about Minecraft’s updates
Youll still need Diamond to craft the Netherite
Netherite is really just gilded diamond
Technically emeralds were the rarest at that point, and nether quartz the best. Today, in 1.15, all ores have become obsolete, since there are wither skeleton farms for coal, iron golem farms for iron, zombie pigman farms for gold, witch farms for redstone and glowstone, villagers for lapis, quartz and diamond tools, and pillager farms for emeralds. You only need diamond ore for jukeboxes and enchantment tables, the latter of which you need precisely one of.
Edit: quartz is still not obsolete, as you can only buy quartz blocks, but quartz itself is still needed for comparators, observers and daylight sensors.
Felipe Vasconcelos Except you need all of those ores to even begin farms.
@@felipevasconcelos6736 ..the latter of which you need precisely none of because in every (tech-oriented) survival world, there should be at least 1 villager trading hall to get infinite enchanted books.

The best part of the way netherite was added it it let's Mojang add other armors in the same fashion adding to the pool of opertunities. Sounds like Sarc had a bad experience with modpacks. You know they're not all rigid progression systems, right?
@GreenYT those are great modpacks, but look at old packs like FTB and tekkit, they felt more like expansions of the game and didn't really force you to go in a certain direction
Well most of the modded ones are, the reason i prefer vanilla over modded is because all the elements seem to fit the theme of minecraft, its simple when it needs to be bur still can be complex, ex: redstone, spawning mechanics and farms. These automations need your own creativity, and setting your own goals seems to give you much more freedom and control than modded. Plus there is a lot more attention to detail and the features are generally more polished than a lot of mods, where it focuses on content rather than quality and detailed interactions between things, although there are mods out there that are really well made and polished
@GreenYT I would say the most popular tend to have a strict progression system for sure, but the majority that I play are not so. Though that's probably me selecting mostly open ended modpacks honestly
@@llGuydll You ever seen Rebirth of the Night? If you want a more vanilla experience, that ones sure to do it. I do agree it seems more modpacks are leaning that direction

I wonder what Sarc has against modpacks. I feel like he only saw the beginnings of a skyblock pack or something.
@@Smubear Probably that. I like having the same freedom in my modpack as I do in Vanilla, except this time I can nuke people and industrially destroy the environment
I only play modded and when I make a crafting table in vanilla I always try to make it a crafting bench and I just get confused.
Yeah... Some modpacks (especially early questing packs) were built precisely like he described; uninspired, mindless, and boring. Recent packs (and mods) have gotten a lot better about it, though; they’ve moved away a bit from single-block solutions to everything, but only if you right click them for an hour, to more complex industry that works as a puzzle to set up and optimize. It’s great! (Also, if anyone here is looking for a modpack, I recommend The Ancient Cake on curseforge; it’s excellent and the questbook is entirely optional (I played before the questbook was added and I’m starting into lategame).
