I’ve watched many of these... your approach to the gasket/plunger seal is on point! The leather won’t break down (unless you don’t use the dredge often enough) and it also has a better chance to make a better seal as it swells! I’m glad I stumbled across your page. You have a new sub!
You have screw fittings attaching the plunger gasket assembly to the shaft. Great idea because it allows you to access the bolt to take it all apart if need be.
Nice video dude.. well done.. i still have my old ghost shrimp pump i made 15 yrs ago. It had a tennis ball..i like the thick leather! Looks like it works great!. brings back memories..
That's one of the better diy tutorials for a hand dredge. I've attempted to build the plunger out of rubber gaskets and a bunch of other material but eventually broke down and bought a set of well plungers cups. Thing is, I never got to complete the project because I lost the cups before I could install them.
@@Oidium45 that's awfully nice, thanks. I'm curious about the sand and gravels getting caught in the cupeed area of the lower end piece. Have you done any additional testing?
@@DamonFeyOutdoors I will be testing this weekend. I am curious about the longevity of the leather. I was also considering adding a second layer to the plunger using 4 pieces of leather total.
concept and parts used is brilliant , execution might be better without coffee :D only thing i see on 95% of all the hand dredge videos , is 1.5-2 " pipe. my point is if you use 3" pipe you get so much more suction . i`v made both and the suction is about double with a 3" , and you can go slower and much more controlled .
Make sure you put a bolt across the nozzle horizontally so you don’t pick up large rocks or debris and it also suggest that you maybe want to make a plunger handle with different material because that T-handle will be pinching your hand. I would suggest using a L handle so you’re fingers are split on the side. But once again the most important feature is you got a put two or 3/4 inch holes at the top of your plunger to allow air to escape when you pull up. Put them 1 inch from the top of your cap and the length of your Plunger
I tried it this weekend and found a few necessary changes. #1 drill a hole in the top cap where the plunger goes in to allow air flow. #2 add a wire or screw/bolt through the center of the sucker end to keep large rocks from clogging the pipe.
Let me give you some advice: Before queuing, check that the pieces fit together without difficulty. That will prevent you from having to hammer them so that they enter correctly. Best regards from Catalonia.
I think a lot of people’s pumps do that 😂 you always see them hauling ass to get pump over a bucket or pan so they don’t lose it all 😂 you’re not alone.
@@Oidium45 The US-made PVC Slip Cap seems to be twice length than Korean PVC products. so I have to import that PVC Slip Cap from US. Korean products have short length on Slip Cap.

I built a hand dredge and I used a side of an old car tire for a plunger.
I also used plumers putty in order to have it slide in the pvc pipe.

Something I saw on another video was to use thin-walled ABS pipe for the nozzle so you can flatten the end to get into narrow spaces.

Job well done, a great design .... and I am making one ....
Cutting the leather so that it extends 1/2 the thickness of the PVC seemed to work well.

The 2” might be a bit easier to hold onto - especially if the user has small hands, but the 3” will have more volume.

Good video bud. Some drill press advice, get a vise to hold your work piece. Holds better and much safer. You can get them at harbor frieght to!
I have one. That little drill doesnt have enough torque to cause any real issues.

sorry I used plumers greese to lube the plunger not plumers putty.
For drilling into plastic place the part in the freezer.
I'll make one out of abs a bit more durable only wider and shorter more for the pack thanks

That glue in the metal can is quick dry. When you put it together, you need to PUT it together. You won't bash it in after.

One of the best tutorial's I have seen on this. However, PLEASE use a vise when drilling, you make me nervous holding that with your bare hands!
I am used to it. That drill press doesn't really have enough torque to do any real damage.
The one I made doesn’t hold water. It sucks it up but as soon as I lift it out the water it drains from the nozzle
My first one was doing the same. I had to cut larger leather pieces for a tighter fit.
I think a lot of people’s pumps do that 😂 you always see them hauling ass to get pump over a bucket or pan so they don’t lose it all 😂 you’re not alone.
The key is to have perfectly round and snug fitting leather gaskets. I suggest sanding them to achieve perfect roundness.
The time Homer built Marge a spice rack......
It’s snug because you can’t draw air and water up the tube without the air having a way to go out
great build! awesome performance! Bro, I bought a "brand name" one and it sucked (in a bad way)
Sorry to hear! You should build one :)
