This video is part of a video series made for a high school gold mining and mineral prospecting course. This video shows how to make a bedrock crevice sucker, or also known as a hand dredge.
Home made hand dredges are perfect for crevicing for gold as it is one of the best crevice tools for working underwater. These tools are also known as a gold sucker, crevice sucker, suction dredge, sucker tube, or by many brand names like "Mother Sucker". This video is all about how to make a hand dredge.

For the plunger leather strips, a suggestion from an ultra nerd with math, but a new prospector.
1. Measure the diameter of the circle including the plastic.
2. Cut it in half to get the radius
3. Use a protractor with this radius to draw a perfect circle of the exact size of the pipe.
4. Cut out very slowly to create a perfect circle.

Hey Dan, I know I'm late to the show here, but I've been watching your gold course videos and building along with your instructions and I have a quick couple questions if you have a second... In case this becomes too much to read, love your channel and appreciate the time and effort you put into sharing...
First and my main reason for reaching out, in your 'how to make a snuffer bottle' video, ua-cam.com/video/k6dpo36p8dM/v-deo.html , you said to 'cut the tube straight and not at an angle' and then said you'd go over why that is when making the crevice sucker, but that little tidbit didn't make it to this video, could you please explain straight vs angled nozzles (maybe in a video short)?? I'm especially curious given I've come to trust and respect your knowledge and advice, more so after finding South Carolina gold using it, lol, yet I'm seeing a nearly $200 x-crevice sucker being sold with two angled nozzles...
Second question, is there any science, traditional or hillbilly, to the leather seal spacing?? Both the distance between the two leathers as well as the amount of overhang from the outer edge of the leather back to the outer edge of the plastic core (and/or fender washers)?? Or the thickness of the leather used?? I'm just now building several different sized crevice tools using your video as a guide, most are 16"-30" lengths of 2" PVC and I've used a scrap of composite deck board that I ripped down to 1/2" for the 'plastic wood'... I've used 1-3/4", 1-5/8" and 2-1/8" hole saws to cut the wood cores, and all of them fit and seem to work at home in a bucket... I've also built one using a 1-1/2" tube as the main body, but on that one I just put a double thick 1-1/4" fender washer between the leathers and a 1" washer under the bolt head and that seems to work the same as well...
In exchange for reading thru all that, I'll share that I found using a drywall circle cutter tool with the circular roller blade ($10 at home depot/lowes) makes marking the leather a dream... I only had 1/16" and 5/32" leather scraps and it marked both really nicely and it actually cut 3/4s of the way thru the thicker one... I found center punching the leather to snuggly fit the cutter center pin worked best, as well as either working on a piece of drywall or drilling a pilot hole in a piece of wood to correct for the offset of the pin and cutting wheel... I test cut cardboard till i was happy with the size, then used it to cut out 10 perfect seals...

The stuff you refer to as 'plastic wood", is called UHMW. Very cool and extremely versatile material...comes in sheets as well and is available at almost any wood supply place...and not very expensive either. Great video!

So for everyone that asked or wished there was a list here yah go! The only thing I didn't catch is the thickness of the plastic wood.. Looks like half inch I'm guessing?
2"-1.5" adapter
1.5"-3/4" threaded adapter
3/4" threaded riser cut in half
2" black abs tube - cut to 20" long
2" cap
3/4" pvc - cut to 22" long
3/4" pvc - cut two pieces 1.5"
3/4" t joint and three 3/4" caps
Use 1.75" hole saw for plastic wood, 1/2"?
Leather for plunger
. 25" bolt, washer, lock washer and nut

@@Danhurd I made mine last night.. What I found at the hardware store was some "plastic wood" decking. They actually had a bunch of samples and just gave it to me! My crevice sucker works great though and we're going to scout a potential claim in the morning with it! I plan on using your method for sampling to find the paystreak, it's a textbook layout so hopefully we find some color! Thanks for all your videos, I've learned a tremendous amount from them!

I used a power plunger and one inch PVC and since the plunger is so much bigger it gets maybe gets a half gallon or so at a time.... Works great for me and cost around $10 and easy to carry and only used black tape to go around the threads to make a snug fit and 1 inch PVC over the threads works fantastic.

Bought a bunch of panning equipment, watch all the Gold TV shows, watch all of Dan's videos, then I go to my state's website to learn laws and etiquette for panning in Virginia, and WOW is there a PhD course on understanding all this "crazy" stuff you need to know before you can actually prospect!?? WHEW!! Insane how hard they've made it to actually know whether or not you can pan somewhere...

I thought I would share a couple of ideas before they die of loneliness 🤣.
A pipe cutter works good on the black PVC if you have one handy.
Using a piece of threaded rod for the leather/plastic wood piece makes it a little easier to take the plunger apart without having to break a superglue joint.
Soaking the leather circles in oil overnight makes it seal a little better, I just use whatever cooking oil the wife has handy.

I don’t mean to be that guy, but there’s a reason he used a saw on the black pipe. The black pipe is called abs pipe because it’s made of abs plastic, this is much different than pvc, which is why you use the cutter on pvc, pvc and abs have different properties.

One thing of note - if you want to cut out perfect circles you can get a piece of flexible band saw blade and tape it around the rim of the exact piece of PVC you plan on using, keep two ends handy one with the blade on the outside diameter and one with it on the inside diameter depending on where you want to make the cut. That way you can cut your plunger cores out with the inside blade, then cut your rubber (or leather idk why he'd use leather instead of rubber) with the head with the outside blade. I do stand by my earlier comment that a bait pump will crap all over these, but I can see the benefit of getting kids into prospecting through crafting.
i was thinking the same thing. but pvc is lighter then metal, the reduced weight is for hiking into gold bearing rivers. less you have to carry the better your experience…
leather swells and seals well but is kinda slippery. its also how old hand well pumps were sealed. personally id use neoprene or conveyor belt rubber myself. u can also use a rag in a pinch. found that one out the hard way....

Good thing teaching the young'uns. I've learned some stuff from you maybe I can return the favor a little. If you do this class again, you might try a key hole saw for the hole in the cap. you wont have to drill both sides, also be careful putting the cap in the vice you could egg shape it. It may not hurt anything on this, you can put a scrap piece of pipe for support, just not so far you can't get it out.

for a better plunger instead of cutting up leather. use a rubber super ball. buy a stainless steel bolt, buy # 2 stainless steel washer, 1 stainless steel nut with a plastic liner in it to lock it down. the rubber ball you can buy at any toy store or a rote aid drug store. it will not rot out after a while and the seal you can adjust with a turn of the bolt to fit in the tube and make a super tight seal.

When making the crevice sucker, can you use rubber cut outs instead of leather?
Is there a reason that you use schedule 80 for some parts and schedule 40 for other parts? Could I use only schedule 40 for the entire thing?

Hey Dan, how would you modify/adapt your hand pump if you wanted to add a couple of interchangeable one way valves to pump directly into a bucket?
How would you make an interchangeable nozzle from the one shown down to say a pex tube for really small cracks? You could then carry a small set of nozzles to fit whatever situation you find at the creek. Multifunctional.
I'd love to see an answer to your questions also.

Much easier to place the 2”. Pipe on top of a tennis ball and mark all the way around the tennis ball. Then cut with a sharp box cutter. Drill hole in center. Drill hole in cap. I then glued a1/4 x 20 lick nut inside with with two part epoxy.
I drill a hole through the the side of the caps and put a short screw into it so it can’t pop off. When attaching the tennis ball I use a washer behind the head of the bolt.

Hey Dan, I have a question with regards to the crevice sucker, what thickness of leather are you using because I can not find anything here on the island. I have got some from a upholstery place but it just does not seal. Any thoughts as to what i might be doing wrong. cheers
A fairly thick leather is required. I got mine through Tandy leather

At about the 30 second mark, you mention a 1.5" to .75" piece... what is its technical name? I looked at Home Depot online and couldn't find anything like it. Thanks!

1 1/2 ABS to 3/4 NPT reducer I think. Might need the go to a plumbing supply store depending on how well stocked your HD is. My HD probably would not have that.

Dan HELP!! I have a very good problem!! I have come across a bedrock crack about 5ft long & 4.5 inches wide. I have sucked materiel out of it using my Gold N Sand suction hand dredge which I modified by sticking a section of automotive rubber hose where the tips normally go. I can't go any longer than the plunger will allow. With the length I have already, I can't get to the bottom of this crevice!! I pulled some mad gold out of it so far. One piece was 0.14 gram, NICE!! HELP!! What can I do to go deeper??? I can stick a 5' pry bar down inside this crevice all the way up to the top of the bar!!

I'm thinking not on this one. The back wall starts above water. It's a sheer solid face that goes down 4'+. The front wall is down at the 4' underwater level and what I stand on, also very solid. Maybe build a longer crevice sucker? I have footage of it but, I'm not ready to post it on my channel. I want to finish first. Thank you so much for your reply Dan.

Dan ,, Ive heard of you . people say you were born with a ounce of gold in each nostril now here is my question .. that crack sucker you make . do you know of a flapper or a one way that can be set up in their where you can run a catch off to the side where a hose can be attached and ran to a catch bucket ? I believe a collapsible hose would work for this , I have a feeling I may be spending a lot of time up in that area . after I get out of this hell hole they call Texas , after 4 years here I am ready for a bone chilling winter ..
+Lucky B I have tried one way flapper valves, but they keep getting rocks stuck in the seal and therefore not sealing and completely destroying the suction.

Did anyone else think "Oreo!" at 10.35?
No one has tried dredging the GG. The bedrock riffles are exposed by the currents sluicing through at three plus knots when the tide is running. There is about a one to two hour window when the current slows down enough to work.
The second challenge is that the depth is over 300ft. Diver tending is impossible.
The third is that this is right smack dab in the middle of a busy shipping channel: you need a vessel even the ships would go around as a matter of course. Something so iconic that it wouldn't be examined. I've an old wooden Monterey-style salmon boat. I have the davits and lead and retriever cable already rigged with hydraulics. I can tie a compressor into my diesel for an air riser system. I don't have a salmon season for two years.
