Awesome comparison video, Joris! The A7S III version versus the M50 version shows how well the M50, in the hands of someone like yourself, can fool most people into assuming that an expensive, pro camera camera was used, if it were an actual Coke commercial. 😅 Thanks for this, man!
Cool comparison. I was actually hard pressed to tell the difference. I definitely see the advantages of the Sony but it's still impressive how far an entry level camera can get you these days!

When viewing this video on my mobile device (Android user) the Canon M50 colors look better than the Sony for the 1080p clips. When viewing the 4k clips side by side the Sony looks better. When watching the Canon M50 1080p versus the Sony 4k clips at the end. The Canon M50 1080p colors still look better to me. Great comparisons and insight here. Thank you for this video!

I had this problem when I switched to Sony, the image quality was just too good. I found that you can smear butter on the front element of the Sony lens to make it look blurry like the Canon. I don't mean big lumps of butter, just a thin, even coating is enough.

Great comparison Joris! I just have one question, I have both cameras, but I never get my footages to look similar to yours. What settings did you use on the Canon M50? What color profile?
Interesting video, you can see the difference in the droplets of the thumbnail. The 4k 10 bit is sharper. Suppose it make sense since more color detail is captured. I would think that maybe for video it is easier to get away with as their is not enough time to pixel peep?
Good comparison. Two points I would like to make. One is of course with a super a tight shot with shallow DOF its hard to tell the different. Shoot some landscapes or introduce a lot more data to the sensor and the 4k difference will be readily apparent. Also if you are a "pro" the price of a camera you use on a weekly basis for years is a very very small amount of capital that will be spend on everything else. I enjoyed this!
Goes to show that good lighting is the absolute most important thing to a shot, especially if you’re shooting with a camera like the M50, whose footage can’t be stretched too much. That said, the a7S III did a better job of maintaining the colors of the can and rejecting the blue cast from the environment. If I were the client, I’d pick the a7S III or ask you to correct the can before delivery. But that difference means there could be shots the M50 is better suited for than the a7S III. The M50’s warmer colors also looked more pleasing to my eye, but that might just be a white balance thing.
surprisingly similar results. Take in account that this is not an exterior shooting with complex patterns and a rich palette of colors and lights. Here the light is completely controlled and the objects filmed are quite simple in colors and patterns.
I prefer the M50 shot. It looks more smooth to me, maybe "oldschool cinematic"-like? I don't know how to describe it, but it's an personal preference anyway. Great video Joris! 😊👍
Nice video! Also Going to shoot a commercial video on my Canon T3i for UA-cam purposes. I guess it also will look great even it doesn't have 1080p 60frames... Let's see :D
You will not be able to tell much difference on youtube where 90% of all watchers look at their cellphone. But try upscale the different videoes on bigger screens, I can assure you can tell a BIG difference. Since its filmed in controlled lighting you almost wont be able to tell the difference in dynamic range. But in so so so many scenarios the dynamic range on the canon would be really bad. You get what you pay for, it’s that easy.
Hands down, I honestly stopped the video even took screenshots and asked around, majority liked the 1080 canon hero shot. The sony one had that strange magenta on the can rim edge.
Wow, this was very helpful. My observation is also, that the dynamic range of the M50 is very limited. I tend to have blown out highlights quite often. The biggest difference for me was trying to color grade the M50 material. There really is not much to work with and slight changes can destroy the M50 footage. But personally, when trying out the Sony A7III, I found that the "sweet spot" of the Sony is waaay bigger. I can make the M50 work in a controlled setting, but when trying out the Sony A7III, I could just point and shoot videos and the camera was able to keep up with changing enviroments.
@@mohdelmogu4169 Yes. I only had the Sony A7III for a week. But I was able able to play around with the color grading to a much higher degree than with my Canon M50.
Bro! Thanx for this. Honestly, the Sony looks too digital in many of these shots IMO. Maybe its the color science, but I felt the Canon Was smoother in much of the close up shots. In the wider shots and the Hero Shot, the Sony looked better. But a different lens choice could likely bridge that gap. Definitely worth saving $3000 until your revenue justifies paying more. I came across this video thinking to trade my m50 for a7c or a7s3. I do only youtube videos, no pro work. I actually like the color of the m50 better. the black on the sony had some purple tint. I was shocked that I liked the m50 better. and I don't think the dynamic range of the sony was prominent in this example. I think I am going to keep my m50 now.
Agree, when shooting in a studio with controlled light you can make the M50 look really good. The difference will be outside. In a few weeks I'll make that comparison...
When you uploaded something on youtube the resolution will automatically reduce. I think there's no way of telling it unless you have the raw file with you. Just my thought.
On small screens it’s difficult to tell the difference but on a big screen and UA-cam set to 4K, you should be able to see the difference between the 1080 and 4K version. 1080 VS 1080... not so sure 😄💥
I recognized the Sony immediately due to the red cast on everything. The 10-bit is imperceptible since everything in the chain has to be 10-bit. So even if it made it through youtube, 99% of monitors are 8-bit. The Sony 4K definitely has the advantage over the 1080p Canon, and that's clearly detectable (albeit not inherently noticeable) around the fine edges of the water droplets and script.
You're totally right! On my calibrated 4K 10-bit monitor, everybody should be able to see the difference. No doubt about it... My mission is to try and keep at least a few people from buying an expensive camera they don't need. Thanks for watching, Krane 💥👊🏻
I watched this comparison in 4K on an 82 inch 6k quantum dot calibrated Samsung tv - in South Africa the 50D retails for around Zar 12000 with the 22 & 15-45 lenses - the Sony 7siii at Zar 65000 with a kit lens - the difference in the clips you provided show a minuscule difference - the Canon 50d I reckon has the best 1080p of any camera for its price - it would be interesting to see a comparison between a Sony 6400 shot in same log profiles - I personally feel that the price of the Sony 7siii is overkill unless you are using it for special specific needs (low light) the slowmo 4K applications and getting paid for it
There may be a difference, but I don't care about it. When it comes to video, the story should be so compelling that you don't really notice the image quality. It's a bit like art: When I am at the museum, I appreciate the painting, not which type of paint the artist used.
I actually think that the canon M50 did a great job. I am thinking of getting a Sony a6100. I assume I'll get results very similar to the canon M50 with the Sony a6100? The colour science is def superior on canon cameras, and there are no picture profiles on the a6100. But, I can deal with that. I can still achieve a good colour grade by shooting in flat settings. For me, detail and quality matters. Will the Sony a6100 stack up well against the M50 in terms of detail and quality, with good lighting? 🤔 Also, I've seen countless UA-camrs compare thousand dollar cameras with 500-700$ cameras. But I wonder how much a 200-300$ camera, such as the Sony a5000, stacks up against a 500-700$ camera, such as the M50. 🤔
Ummm...like Sony would be better outside when recording in elements, at night time, slow motion, color grading... Taking a video of a rotating can inside a controlled environment then I think even a iPhone footage would be close ...
This comment is to just justify that the Sony really does have a lot of advantages to professionals. Not so much for sitting UA-cam videos and hobbyists. 💛🤗
I meant range of colors. Whether or not you like the colors is very subjective. Older Sony cameras did have a problem but on these new Sony cameras it's greatly improved and I have no issues at all with the Sony colors. Looks great to me. But like I said, I haven't used any of the older Sonys. 🤷🏻♂️😊
Actually, the Sony boost the reds in this case. So because there's so much red in the video it looks like the Sony is superior. In fact, the Canon has a more true color science. The blacks are black and whites are white. The Sony adds a red cast to both of those colors. Also, note the aluminum rim on each can.
Canon 1080P is simply sucks. I am a die hard canon shooter and I still hanging on ALL my L lenses. Few yrs ago, I went with Panasonic GH5 for video. I can't never ever going back to Canon for video. M50 for video? Are you Fking crazy? Even a Canon C200 Cine camera is no match for Gh5 (already old camera) in image quality. Let a lone M50. What a joke. Your stupid image quality comparison with A7S III is also a joke. Try to deceived people by flipping the image back and forth real fast so that people can't see the difference.
Of course... there's a difference. But is that difference worth $3000 for you? 🤷🏻♂️

I watched this comparison in 4K on an 82 inch 6k quantum dot calibrated Samsung tv - in South Africa the 50D retails for around Zar 12000 with the 22 & 15-45 lenses - the Sony 7siii at Zar 65000 with a kit lens - the difference in the clips you provided show a minuscule difference - the Canon 50d I reckon has the best 1080p of any camera for its price - it would be interesting to see a comparison between a Sony 6400 shot in same log profiles - I personally feel that the price of the Sony 7siii is overkill unless you are using it for special specific needs (low light) the slowmo 4K applications and getting paid for it
True! A7S III is definitely super expensive if you don't use its full potential!
Is it only me but I like the Canon colors better. Anyways! Super cool comparison man!
I have to be honest, both videos are color graded so neither one shows colors straight out of camera.
@@JorisHermans True. Then maybe to my taste, the little m50 color grade works better.
you are not alone canon is always better in colours...expectable from a printing company, can never go wrong
There may be a difference, but I don't care about it. When it comes to video, the story should be so compelling that you don't really notice the image quality. It's a bit like art: When I am at the museum, I appreciate the painting, not which type of paint the artist used.
I agree 100% 🙏🏻
really cool comparison👌🏻its also interesting that you use canon & sony😅
Had a Canon R5 and M50 but I’m moving everything to Sony. Just not all at once 😉 But it’s interesting indeed to use both for now...
Which lense did you use in M50??
Canon EF-M 22mm f2.0
@@JorisHermans I didn’t expect such quick reply.
Thanks man.
I seriously couldn’t tell a difference…. I asked my son to pick which one looks better… he said they are the same lol
On the Phone is not a big diference, also is only full HD on youtube app 😞
Simply new to UA-cam gor for m50
the only evident difference was 1080 vs 4k, at least on my iphone 7plus
The M50 looks better to me
They look identical
next shoot with a a6000 vs an R3/r5
or a5000
I actually think that the canon M50 did a great job.
Also, I've seen countless UA-camrs compare thousand dollar cameras with 500-700$ cameras.
But I wonder how much a 200-300$ camera, such as the Sony a5000, stacks up against a 500-700$ camera, such as the M50. 🤔
Totally! In a controlled environment, the a5000 would give you similar results!
There is a difference but nothing mind bending
Ummm...like Sony would be better outside when recording in elements, at night time, slow motion, color grading...
Taking a video of a rotating can inside a controlled environment then I think even a iPhone footage would be close ...
This comment is to just justify that the Sony really does have a lot of advantages to professionals. Not so much for sitting UA-cam videos and hobbyists. 💛🤗
0:56 better colors??? Sony colors improved but canon colors are wayyyyyy better. Sony has a green bluish tint and ugly skin tones
I meant range of colors. Whether or not you like the colors is very subjective. Older Sony cameras did have a problem but on these new Sony cameras it's greatly improved and I have no issues at all with the Sony colors. Looks great to me. But like I said, I haven't used any of the older Sonys. 🤷🏻♂️😊
@@JorisHermans ok, I can understand that. Although the newer sonys have better colors, they are not as good as Canon's.
Actually, the Sony boost the reds in this case. So because there's so much red in the video it looks like the Sony is superior. In fact, the Canon has a more true color science. The blacks are black and whites are white. The Sony adds a red cast to both of those colors. Also, note the aluminum rim on each can.
@@krane15 yeah
I have a 1080p cheap monitor and can see the difference clearly
Who also thought the M50 footage looked better? 🙈😅
Exactly 😂❤️
Yep better colors
me !
nahhh the sony colour on the top of the can, silver lining is magenta..while canon is silver...silver stays silver
Im afraid to say I thought the right one was the Sony :S and I like more the canon colors :S :S :S o.O
Edit: Only in the first hero shot, then the sony got it
The 4K Sony version may look a little better, but it still didn’t make me like Coke Zero! 😬😉
😅👊🏻💥
People hunting phones with 30 mpix or more then uppload them in FB and showing the pictures in 3mpix. 99% doing that.
I was thinking exactly the same while watching a commercial for the new Samsung Galaxy that has 8K... better than cinema quality they claim 🤷🏻♂️😅
❤❤❤❤❤
They look 100% the same to me.
Test outside
I will 🙏🏻
I hope coke at least sent you some money :-P
Not one cent! And I lost 3 teeth from drinking 20 cans of coke that day... 🤯
Watching on my £48 phablet can't tell the difference. And I prefer Pepsi.
fps russia of the camera world
At least I can't get arrested for a basement full of cameras, right? 🤔😄
M50 colors looked better tan the Sony
on my screen the M 50 looks better
Barely....
