      I've seen the same narrative countless times. Since the 90s. Something, something in particular in the creative field hasn't been seen often before, and someone does it, then a few others pick up on it. Then it look advanced and impressive, and signals the person is professional because they know this technique. So then people pile on until it becomes done to death, and eventually, it's a symbol of exactly the opposite of the original intention. It almost becomes a sign of the copying amateur. It's like Stars for Sneetches. And then it dies out because no one wants to be that unoriginal. Then something else comes along. And the whole thing repeats.

    In terms of image quality, it's sometimes difficult to see the difference on a phone or small laptop screen. But project it on to a massive movie screen and you can instantly see the difference. Arri shoots 16 bit linear converted to 12 bit log and has insane data rates (something like 1.60 to 2.20 Gbit/s in 24p). These new hybrid mirrorless cameras are fantastic but they're made for youtube/vimeo or at the most a nice television screen, not the cinema.

    • @pin65371

    Hollywood is like broadcast television, it's a group effort not a "one man band". Arri is a modular system that is expensive to the consumer electronics buyer, but to the industrial buyer it's a capital expense that is amortized over a long period of time. For the corporate user it's not a problem having a full inventory of accessories to make the system complete, just as broadcast video cameras become complete with all of the accessories that individuals might be tempted not to get in order to save money. And yes, the image quality is worth it. Some things are worth doing as a team in order to do better.

    I don't think the difference in image quality between the Alexa and a Canon C300, a Blackmagic URSA, or even a Panasonic GH5 is substantial enough to justify such a gigantic difference in price. I mean, it's $45 thousand for one or two extra stops of dynamic range, and a difference in skin tones that I can guarantee 99% of your audience won't even notice or appreciate while they're watching your movie on consumer-level television, probably not even in 4K.

    Another major argument is Arris reliability and Optimization for Hollywood workflow. A true professional tool that performs as expected and needed every time. From what I keep hearing about RED, they have still some distance to go in that regard. Reminds me a bit of Tesla. New and awesome cutting edge technology, but not the the reliability and all-round maturity of older established companies.

    I was on set as an extra for a TV series a few weeks ago and everything was shot on an ARRI Alexa Mini. When our scene was finished the DP and the Director were reviewing the footage and I managed to get a look at the image, and I was blown away by how incredible it looked - so simple, but just gorgeous. I had no idea they weren't good at low light until you mentioned it because this scene was shot in a nightclub! Gahh I love these cameras!

    • @AronBagel
      @AronBagel 5 років тому +1

      @twinklenutzzz Interesting points. I guess nowadays we tend to associate good low light performance with being able to pull as much details out of the shadows as possible, whereas in film, they rarely do that - they just make the darkness look very, very good.

    • @Swansniff2
      @Swansniff2 5 років тому +2

      @@AronBagel I actually bought the Sony A7sii for that exact reason. I shot a lot of events and nightclub promos back then and figured it would be perfect for that. But in the end I just pointed the camera at well lit parts of the club anyways and didn't need the extra ISO performance. When I did shoot dark areas, it did look better than my previously used cameras, but it still looked bad and I never used the footage anyway... It was really just drawn out shadows without much contrast. Hated the camera for all its other flaws and just now bought a BMCC4k for the cinematic look and ease of use instead...

  • @yummmmy
    @yummmmy 5 років тому +282

    This video is full of misinformation. Dynamic range is a metric science CAN measure and compare. In fact, with a little DIY, you could measure the dynamic range of your own cameras. All these "film like" look qualities you speak of are highly dependent on your lens, and your colorist. The REAL reason hollywood uses arri is because of pro features like SDI and timecodes, codecs, modularity. They are also reliable, and have great support. You're doing your viewers a disservice by mystifying what cinematic look is with all this bs conjecture.

    • @yummmmy
      @yummmmy 5 років тому +49

      @@FutureChaosTV But manufacturers DR rating is actually quite accurate as this is a trivial thing to test. For an example, take a look at Filmmaker IQ's video on dual iso.
      The bigger issue is them mystifying what "cinematic look" is. It's much easier for someone to accept that their footage doesn't look cinematic because they don't have a $20k camera. It's not MY fault, its the cameras. But you're not improving as a filmmaker if you think the missing ingredient is an arri. There was a shot with the truck flipping in the dark knight that was taken from a b roll camera. A canon 5d forgot which version. There is no point in that movie where you went "oh thats not cinematic, must be because they didn't use an arri." If you want a cinematic look, choose good lenses, get more experience color grading, move your camera with purpose, and most importantly, learn how to light your scene.
      As for which camera is recommended. It depends. Cameras/lenses are nothing more than tools to achieve a look you desire. If you're shooting a travel vlog, then compactness is probably something you value. If you shoot a lot of low light, you may want to consider a bigger sensor like full frame. If you're a professional, you're most likely going to rent anyways. If you are a hobbyist and want to practice, then the current crop of dslr/mirrorless are already fantastic and affordable.

      @@michaelxz1305 The James Webb telescope is an IR telescope made for observing long wave visible light up to mid-infra-red. The Hubble telescope views UV, visible, and near IR.
      In order to view these longer wavelengths (lower frequencies) of light, the James Webb telescope has to be kept colder than the Hubble, which requires it to be moved MUCH farther away from the earth (1.5 million km) than the Hubble (550 km). This makes servicing it once it's in location virtually impossible.
      Since IR radiation is basically heat radiation, the Hubble itself has enough warmth to radiate heat in the very wavelengths that the James Webb telescope is made to detect. That makes it impossible for the Hubble to accurately measure these wavelengths since it's emitting these wavelengths itself.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Webb_Space_Telescope
      Also, I'm not sure what the original life expectancy of the Hubble was. Now they expect it to last another 10 years. Thirty years ago, maybe they thought it would last 20 years. I don't know. It might be like the Mars Rover that lasted much longer than expected.

    Great video @Matti. When you mentioned that this camera is not about budget and convenience, and how comfortable it is to use for a long time, but about the quality of the image, it made totally sense to me.
    You know, when you're vlogging, you hold your camera with your hand for long periods of time, and usually you do long shots, while in great budget movies, the cameras are held on cranes or tripods, and even though the shooting lasts all day, the scenes are not. Most of the scenes are seconds long, repeated many times, so the camera person only has to held the camera for short periods of time.
    I enjoy your channel content buddy, thanks for sharing !

      Because this is click-baity garbage. No mention of lens selection, LUT capabilities, grading capabilities etc. Just bashing a serious high-end digital cinema camera that doesn't fit his "style" or needs means it's not overpriced. Arri's are leased or rented, the studios own the cameras for pool use by various directors.

  • @JDTechTV
    @JDTechTV 5 років тому

    That Arri 709 LUT is amazing. You can get the color right in camera, especially utilizing false color tools, so you barely have to color grade. We use one daily and makes using a RED or any other camera feel weird. Actually, only other cameras I found that I can get close to the Arri Alexa Mini look is the Sony a7iii and the BMPCC4K, BlackMagic being the closest.
