Love that you're doing more of a vlog style in your videos man. The amount of work to get shots like these is sick and both Your's and Steve's creativity is off the charts for sure! I wish i had the patience myself haha!
I agree with this, the vlog style makes me feel like I'm there watching at the location, if that makes sense! It makes it more engaging and fun to watch!
Guys. You missed a great opportunity. Should've sprayed the cans with a little water, to get that "freshness". Also I think white background would also make it better. Would make the coke stand more by itself.
The cans need a bit more weight in them so they dont "jump" while getting pulled. They "stutter" cuz each pull pulled them farther than the fishing line was pulling it so its kinda jumping
Stutter is due to friction (solved with oil/flour/graphite), lack of inertia (weight) and I am sure the elasticity of the fishing line. Just my 2 cents. :-)
Love this video - amazing how you share your process in such an entertaining and honest way. Taking notes. So engaging! On top of that - love your humble and positive attitude man. So cool how you’re appreciating the people around you.
FYI, physics major here- the stutter was due to not enough tension in the string to overcome the frictional force in the table. So extra, consistent force (like when you pushed it) overcomes it and it’s smooth. You could also have used a layer of cloth or something to reduce the coefficient of friction between the cans and the table, which would have lowered the force you need to use to overcome the force of friction. Interesting test!
@@iimmyyyy the chances of you knowing that before you read it are lower than your grades. And that’s hard to beat. He didn’t major in physics to figure that out, but he has and so he may as well share his expertise.

You can get a probe lens for $1100 used and godox lights instead of aputure lights. You could have a great lighting setup with a probe for under 2k -- that's very good when you look at the full spectrum of video and the expensive gear he was referencing that can run into the 6 figure range.
@@dna8269 Yes, especially without sound from the scene godox saves you a ton. I also got a nicefoto lightdome wich is almost as good as the lightdome 2 that every big youtuber seems to use. (i think it is only missing the gel slider). Plenty of options to get in the game with less money.
Monofilament fishing line stretches, so it can act as a shock absorber but also gives you ramp up and bounce- fluorocarbon is also transparent but has near zero stretch so the movement starts exactly with the camera rig. You got a great shot in the end.
You’re the man mr Schiffer!!! I was totally inspired by you on the latest gyoza video on my channel and literally drew out the plan in advance. Didn’t quite hit your level but really appareciate the constant sharing of your approach 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
@@ALifeofAttraction I was about to make muffins and now im tempted to make a video out of it 😂. Only problem is I'm a one man team so its gonna be hard trying to get the shots I want haha.
Awesome as always. My suggestion would be instead of using the empty cans to weigh the cans down by filling them with some sand or so. This would create some slight resistance and smooth out the movements
Awesome result! My suspicion as to why the cans were "stuttering" is that the fishing line was stretching. The lines would stretch, then once it reached the point where the stretch pulled the can's weight, the cans would move, the line would contract, and then the cycle would happen all over again. The fast motion was a good way to get around that.
Dude, you are one of the most inspiring creators on UA-cam. I truly appreciate you brother. You have already helped my video workflow so much and I am still catching up on all of your videos. You are a beast when it comes to video brother. Thank you truly my friend!
WOW!!! I am not into doing videos. I am into photography pretty heavy, however, you guys blew me away with the way you figured this out and got it all set up. Great video!!!
Хроники Лакеров ahhahaa I think the same lol! Should be better if he used that cake pan light and his phone to real be “using my creativity”. But the challenge was nice.
And he could've shot it with an underlit glass surface and fake ice, while the cans slid on a very thin layer of water...and sprayed down hero cans...next level.
Daniel, you are so amazing at creating these videos! I loved to hear your thought process and how you broke down every step of the video. Great work 🙌🏼
Amazing work. I think yours is actually better. The only 2 criticisms are the light placement for the final landing covering the lettering on the can, and secondly like a lot have said - not using condensation on the bottles. You nailed 95% of this and I couldn't have done better.
DUDE...Daniel. You nailed it! Nice work and engineering to show us how to get similar shots without super crazy equipment, goes to show a little hard work and thinking can take you further than most gear ever can! Thanks for sharing, keep it up!
I would've tried gluing a fabric like felt to the bottom of the cans to help them slide better. For the third can I would have tried your basic four screw idea for wrapping the fishing line, but try to have it also sitting top of a piece of fabric to help it spin. Maybe a nail up through the board and into the can to hold it in place? Then the can would spin on the nail as the fishing line is pulled and makes it rotate.
Really enjoyed that but would like to see the same video achieved or attempted with a standard (prob Macro) lens as opposed to an expensive probe lens. Any thoughts?
Hey Daniel, I recommend to use braided fishing line next time instead the monofilament you actually used. Monofilament stretches like rubber band, causing the "jumping" of the cans. Braided fishing line doesn't stretch and will so force a smooth gliding of the pulled objects. Anyway, thanks for the inspiring video!
You are probably one of my biggest inspirations for my videos and the reason I started shooting food stuff. I will definitely have to check that course out, thanks!
I had the pleasure of Steve taking my portrait. The pictures were great out of the camera. He is a nice and very talented man. This was a great reenactment!
As someone who fishes quite a bit, I would suggest using BRAID fishing line instead of monofilament or fluorocarbon due to the fact that braid doesn't stretch. I believe line stretch was a big factor in the jerkiness of your first few takes. It would pose more of a challenge in post to edit out, as braided fishing line is not clear, but it would've definitely yielded a smoother pull. Nice video.
